Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Gleaming Greenery
I rode back to the manor in one of the family cars.

The moment I stepped onto the terrace, a glass of ice water came flying straight at me.

“Ah! I’m sorry, Evelyn! I didn’t know you’d come back so suddenly!”

Sophia held the empty glass. Only after she saw my hair and clothes completely soaked did she slowly lower it.

I wiped the water from my face. I did not bother responding. Instead, I merely looked up at the familiar backyard.

The white gardenia tree I had planted with my own hands was gone.

The shooting range that had once belonged to me had been transformed into Sophia’s private garden. In the center sat a white lounge chair, engraved with her name.

The cold wind swept through my soaked clothes. A tightness seized my chest, and I could not stop myself from coughing.

Lorenzo and Dario sat nearby, watching me with nothing but cold indifference.

It was as though they believed I had already started pretending to be sick again the moment I returned to the manor just to win their sympathy.

“Finally decided to come back? I thought you were planning to hide in the hospital forever and wait for everyone to come running after you.”

There was unmistakable mockery in Lorenzo’s voice.

Dario let out a laugh. “Of course she had to come back. Without the De Luca family protecting her, where else could she possibly go?”

His words stabbed straight through me.

Back then, my father had just died in a brutal family purge. To protect what remained of the Serra family, my mother sent me here for refuge.

I was so young that I was afraid to sleep at night, terrified that my father’s enemies would find me here.

Dario used to stand guard outside my bedroom door, entertaining me with an old unloaded pistol just to make me smile.

“Don’t be scared. If anyone dares come in, I’ll be the first one to protect you.”

Lorenzo had personally arranged for my room to be in the innermost part of the main house. He even had the family guards take turns standing watch outside my door.

Later, after he became the godfather, he announced publicly at a family meeting, “Evelyn is the most honored young lady of our family. Her orders are my orders!”

Back then, I truly believed that no matter what happened, they would always stand behind me.

That was, until Sophia’s father died taking a bullet meant for Lorenzo. As his orphaned daughter, she was brought into the manor.

Everything slowly began to change.

The brothers felt guilty over her father’s death, so they went out of their way to take care of her.

Sophia took advantage of that guilt to grow closer to them, constantly ‘accidentally’ damaging my things in the process.

She could wear my jewelry whenever she pleased. At family banquets, she even took seats that had originally been reserved for me.

At first, I let it go because of her circumstances. That was, until the day she took apart the pocket watch my father had left me, scattering its tiny pieces across the table.

I finally lost my patience and confronted her.

However, Lorenzo stepped in front of her first. “She was only trying to fix it for you. Why do you have to twist her good intentions into something so ugly?”

Dario frowned at me as well. “Sophia doesn’t have a single family member left. Unlike you, who’s had us protecting you all these years. Can’t you show her a little more understanding?”

I held the pocket watch that would never tick again. For the first time, the two men I had once known so well felt like complete strangers.

From that day on, Sophia slowly took my place in their hearts. Now, even the place where I rested had become hers.

If that was the case, then there was no reason for me to stay.

I walked into the main house, intending only to change out of my wet clothes and pack my things as quickly as possible. However, when I reached the second floor, I found all of my belongings piled in the hallway.

A new nameplate hung on the door to what had once been my bedroom.

It read: [Sophia]

Lorenzo approached from behind with his arm around Sophia, looking down at me as though I were beneath him.

“Sophia will be staying in your room from now on. You’ll move to one of the guest rooms downstairs. And you’re done handling the casino accounts. Sophia will take over. For the time being, stay at the manor quietly and stop causing trouble for the family.”

“Why are you doing this to me? Did I do something wrong?” I asked.

His expression hardened, leaving no room for negotiation.

“You keep targeting Sophia, so we’re going to teach you to understand your place in this family.”

I replied in a calm voice, “I’ll clear out the room. As for the suite downstairs, you can keep it for yourselves.

“And you don’t need to find another position for me either. I quit.”

Lorenzo gave a cold laugh. “Do you think threatening me with your resignation will make me give in?”

He looked down at me arrogantly. “For the sake of the twenty years you’ve spent in this family, I’ll let it go this time. But from now on, behave yourself. Stop making everyone indulge your tantrums.”

I listened quietly, offering no argument, and simply walked past him.

As our shoulders brushed, I spoke in a soft voice, “Don’t worry. I won’t cause you any more trouble.”

Then I walked away without looking back. This time, I had truly made up my mind to leave.

Matteo ignored the ugly expressions on Lorenzo and Dario’s faces. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a black diamond wedding band.I moved the ruby ring to my right hand, and he dropped to one knee and slipped the wedding band onto my finger.Dario’s eyes reddened. “Evelyn, are you really going to throw away twenty years of history with us for the power of the Romano family? I never knew you were this hungry for power.”I smiled. “If I really wanted the Romano family’s power, I would have married Matteo seven years ago. Then you wouldn’t even have the chance to stand here and judge me like you are now.”I raised my hand, revealing the wound on my palm. The mark from Lorenzo’s slap had still not faded from my cheek.“This is what the De Luca family left me with in the end.”The lawyer handed over the transfer documents.“On the day Miss Evelyn completed her marriage registration, Mrs. Serra transferred twenty years’ worth of living and medical expenses, plus interest, to t

Back then, I rejected the marriage for Lorenzo and Dario’s sake, yet Matteo had kept the authorization in place all these years, turning down lucrative marriage alliances with other families.Dario scoffed, “So in the end, this is still about Sophia. You married Matteo just to force us to take the rings back, didn’t you? Sophia is just a girl who lost her father. We gave her those rings so the other families would know she was under the De Luca family's protection. She could never replace you.”He stepped closer.“Just come back with us. We’ll give you your own room at the manor again. The De Luca family will cover all your expenses, and we’ll assign guards to you again.”Lorenzo suddenly grabbed my injured palm. Pain shot through my hand and all the way up my arm.“Come back to Sicily with me. I’ll personally tear up the Romano marriage contract. Whatever consequences there are between the two families, I’ll take full responsibility.”He said it as though it were the most natura

Before the call even ended, gunshots rang out downstairs. It was Lorenzo and Dario.By the time I reached the first floor, both of them had already been disarmed and stopped by the Romano guards.Lorenzo stared at me. “Tell me it’s not your name on the marriage registration with the Romano family.”When he first became Godfather, he announced to the entire family that my orders were his orders.Dario let out a cold laugh beside him. “Stop pretending. That marriage registration is nothing but a fake story your mother and the Romano matriarch cooked up together. The Serra family has nothing but a small fraction of its old business in New York left.“And you’re a sickly woman who could have an asthma attack at any moment. Why would the Romano family make you their future mistress?”I lowered my head and calmly smoothed the skirt of my dress, ignoring them.“Take your men and get out of here. This street belongs to the Romano family. It’s not somewhere you can just barge into when

“I can’t accept this. The meaning behind this ring is too significant.”Old Madam Romano gently pressed my hand down.“Then take your time getting used to what it means. And from now on, just call me Grandma.”She explained that Matteo had already given his authorization, then summoned the butler.“From today onward, Evelyn has full authority to use the family’s cars and security personnel. All family gatherings will be arranged as she wishes. No one is permitted to make decisions without consulting her. She is the mistress of the Romano family!”I was startled for a moment. Lorenzo said something similar to me back then.“Evelyn is the most honored young lady of the De Luca family. Her orders are my orders.”However, everything that had once belonged to me was later taken away. Sophia even broke my father’s pocket watch into pieces, and they still chose to protect her.My eyes stung with tears. Old Madam Romano tightened her grip on my hand.“There will always be a place for

The car pulled into the hospital, and the doctor bandaged my wounds.“It’s nothing serious, but you’ll need to keep your palm dry for now.”I held out my scorched passport for the driver to see.“Can we still leave as planned?”“I’ll contact the consulate and arrange an emergency travel document for you. The Romano family has arrived as well. They’ll wait for you and leave with you.”…Two days later.“Ms. Evelyn, the plane is ready.”I boarded the jet. The moment I landed in New York, I signed the marriage contract. By that evening, word of my marriage had spread throughout the entire Mafia underworld.Lorenzo messaged me.Lorenzo: [So this is another one of your little runaway acts to threaten me? Evelyn, when you’re done throwing a tantrum, come back. I’ll do you a favor and pretend none of this ever happened.]Dario sent me a screenshot with a caption too. Dario: [Why does the heir to the Serra family have the same name as you? You really went to New York?]I blocked

Victoria De Luca lived in a villa by the sea.The moment I stepped through the door, she heard my footsteps. When she turned around, the smile vanished from her face. Her eyes immediately fell on my swollen, reddened cheek.“Oh my! What happened? “Come here. Let me see how bad it is.”She reached out to touch me, but I instinctively turned my face away.“It doesn’t hurt anymore.”Victoria did not press me for an explanation. She simply had a maid bring out the first-aid kit and personally treated the swelling on my cheek.Only after she put down the cotton swab did I remove the De Luca family crest from my coat and place it in front of her.“I’m going back to New York. It’s time I returned this to you.”Victoria stared at the crest for a long moment without reaching for it.“Maybe it would be good for you to spend some time in New York.” She spoke cautiously. “You can come back after you’ve had time to cool off.”“I’m not staying there temporarily.” I gently cut her off.
