Chapter 3

Auteur: Gleaming Greenery
I thought I would be taking a lot with me, but when I finished packing, everything that truly belonged to me could not even fill a single suitcase.

Several jewelry boxes lay scattered nearby, filled with the pieces Lorenzo had given me over the years.

After he became Godfather, he often took me to family banquets. Before every event, he would personally put my jewelry on for me, then take my hand and lead me into the ballroom.

Back then, he would always lean down and whisper, “Stay by my side, Evelyn. No one will ever dare look down on you.”

Now, those expensive pieces were stuffed into a cardboard box. The necklaces and earrings tangled together, and a few of the gemstones still had stains that would not come off no matter how much I wiped them.

I looked at them and suddenly found it amusing.

Back then, he had personally chosen the most expensive jewelry for me, afraid that someone might look down on me if I wore anything less. Now, I did not even have the right to keep them.

I moved the jewelry boxes aside and found several access cards to private clubs underneath.

Whenever Dario took me to clubs owned by the family, he always complained that the guards took too long checking people at the entrance.

Once, I had not even been waiting for a full minute when he simply shoved his access card into my hand.

He instructed the guards right in front of everyone, “Remember her face. From now on, she doesn’t need a reservation when she comes here.

“And she never waits outside!”

Back then, they could not even bear to let a single door stand between me and whatever I wanted.

Now, every card had a note from the butler stuck to it.

[Access revoked. Please return immediately.]

I placed the cards in the box with the jewelry, intending to return everything to the butler.

When Lorenzo came downstairs with Sophia, he happened to see me putting the last jewelry box inside.

He came to a stop. A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.

Previously, whenever I finished wearing those pieces, I would carefully wipe each one clean and put it back exactly where it belonged.

I had also kept those access cards safely in my wallet at all times. Now, every one of them was sitting in a cardboard box.

Lorenzo’s expression quickly turned cold. “You’re already rushing to return everything I gave you just because I asked you to move rooms? Evelyn, besides throwing tantrums, what else can you do?”

Back then, he could have an entire collection brought to the manor just so he could personally pick out the piece that suited me best.

Now, with Sophia standing beside him, even my returning those things was treated as another one of my tantrums.

I closed the box.

“Tell the butler to send me the bill for whatever I owe you. I’ll pay you back in full at the original price.”

“No one asked you to pay me back.”

He glanced at me, his voice turning colder. “Put everything back. And from now on, stop bothering Sophia over such trivial things.”

Sophia slipped her arm through his and gave it a gentle tug. “Lorenzo, the captain is still waiting for us at the dock.”

She smiled sweetly. “You promised you’d teach me how to pilot the yacht today. You can’t change your mind now!”

My hands stilled for a moment.

That yacht had been Lorenzo’s eighteenth-birthday gift to me. My name was engraved across the stern, and everything inside had been designed around my tastes.

When I first came to Sicily, I was terrified that my father’s enemies would find me. I barely dared leave the manor for a long time. The only place where I could truly relax was by the sea.

When Lorenzo noticed, he started taking me to the private marina and personally taught me how to pilot a yacht.

On my eighteenth birthday, he placed the keys in my hand.

“It’s yours. From now on, once we’re out at sea, even I have to take orders from you.”

For years afterward, we traveled to countless places along the Sicilian coast.

Little by little, the cabin filled with my favorite records, bottles of wine, and a long sofa where I could lie back and watch the sea.

Even after becoming Godfather, there were times when he would shut off his work phone and spend an entire day there with me.

It was because of those memories that, little by little, my heart began to lean toward Lorenzo.

However, every time I was close to making a choice, Dario would suddenly appear in front of me.

“If you choose him, does that mean you don’t want me anymore?”

Just that one sentence was enough to make me hesitate all over again.

I could not bear to hurt Dario, and Lorenzo always told me there was no need to rush.

Now, he was taking Sophia aboard the yacht that had been named after me.

He was going to personally teach her everything he had once taught only me, and he never even asked whether I was okay with it. It was as though whose name was carved into the stern had never mattered at all.

Sophia looked back at me, a victorious smile playing on her lips.

“Evelyn, you don’t mind, do you?”

I set down the cardboard box and wrapped my hand around the handle of my suitcase again.

“Of course not. I hope you two have fun.”

Then I walked past them without another word.

Matteo ignored the ugly expressions on Lorenzo and Dario’s faces. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a black diamond wedding band.I moved the ruby ring to my right hand, and he dropped to one knee and slipped the wedding band onto my finger.Dario’s eyes reddened. “Evelyn, are you really going to throw away twenty years of history with us for the power of the Romano family? I never knew you were this hungry for power.”I smiled. “If I really wanted the Romano family’s power, I would have married Matteo seven years ago. Then you wouldn’t even have the chance to stand here and judge me like you are now.”I raised my hand, revealing the wound on my palm. The mark from Lorenzo’s slap had still not faded from my cheek.“This is what the De Luca family left me with in the end.”The lawyer handed over the transfer documents.“On the day Miss Evelyn completed her marriage registration, Mrs. Serra transferred twenty years’ worth of living and medical expenses, plus interest, to t

Back then, I rejected the marriage for Lorenzo and Dario’s sake, yet Matteo had kept the authorization in place all these years, turning down lucrative marriage alliances with other families.Dario scoffed, “So in the end, this is still about Sophia. You married Matteo just to force us to take the rings back, didn’t you? Sophia is just a girl who lost her father. We gave her those rings so the other families would know she was under the De Luca family's protection. She could never replace you.”He stepped closer.“Just come back with us. We’ll give you your own room at the manor again. The De Luca family will cover all your expenses, and we’ll assign guards to you again.”Lorenzo suddenly grabbed my injured palm. Pain shot through my hand and all the way up my arm.“Come back to Sicily with me. I’ll personally tear up the Romano marriage contract. Whatever consequences there are between the two families, I’ll take full responsibility.”He said it as though it were the most natura

Before the call even ended, gunshots rang out downstairs. It was Lorenzo and Dario.By the time I reached the first floor, both of them had already been disarmed and stopped by the Romano guards.Lorenzo stared at me. “Tell me it’s not your name on the marriage registration with the Romano family.”When he first became Godfather, he announced to the entire family that my orders were his orders.Dario let out a cold laugh beside him. “Stop pretending. That marriage registration is nothing but a fake story your mother and the Romano matriarch cooked up together. The Serra family has nothing but a small fraction of its old business in New York left.“And you’re a sickly woman who could have an asthma attack at any moment. Why would the Romano family make you their future mistress?”I lowered my head and calmly smoothed the skirt of my dress, ignoring them.“Take your men and get out of here. This street belongs to the Romano family. It’s not somewhere you can just barge into when

“I can’t accept this. The meaning behind this ring is too significant.”Old Madam Romano gently pressed my hand down.“Then take your time getting used to what it means. And from now on, just call me Grandma.”She explained that Matteo had already given his authorization, then summoned the butler.“From today onward, Evelyn has full authority to use the family’s cars and security personnel. All family gatherings will be arranged as she wishes. No one is permitted to make decisions without consulting her. She is the mistress of the Romano family!”I was startled for a moment. Lorenzo said something similar to me back then.“Evelyn is the most honored young lady of the De Luca family. Her orders are my orders.”However, everything that had once belonged to me was later taken away. Sophia even broke my father’s pocket watch into pieces, and they still chose to protect her.My eyes stung with tears. Old Madam Romano tightened her grip on my hand.“There will always be a place for

The car pulled into the hospital, and the doctor bandaged my wounds.“It’s nothing serious, but you’ll need to keep your palm dry for now.”I held out my scorched passport for the driver to see.“Can we still leave as planned?”“I’ll contact the consulate and arrange an emergency travel document for you. The Romano family has arrived as well. They’ll wait for you and leave with you.”…Two days later.“Ms. Evelyn, the plane is ready.”I boarded the jet. The moment I landed in New York, I signed the marriage contract. By that evening, word of my marriage had spread throughout the entire Mafia underworld.Lorenzo messaged me.Lorenzo: [So this is another one of your little runaway acts to threaten me? Evelyn, when you’re done throwing a tantrum, come back. I’ll do you a favor and pretend none of this ever happened.]Dario sent me a screenshot with a caption too. Dario: [Why does the heir to the Serra family have the same name as you? You really went to New York?]I blocked

Victoria De Luca lived in a villa by the sea.The moment I stepped through the door, she heard my footsteps. When she turned around, the smile vanished from her face. Her eyes immediately fell on my swollen, reddened cheek.“Oh my! What happened? “Come here. Let me see how bad it is.”She reached out to touch me, but I instinctively turned my face away.“It doesn’t hurt anymore.”Victoria did not press me for an explanation. She simply had a maid bring out the first-aid kit and personally treated the swelling on my cheek.Only after she put down the cotton swab did I remove the De Luca family crest from my coat and place it in front of her.“I’m going back to New York. It’s time I returned this to you.”Victoria stared at the crest for a long moment without reaching for it.“Maybe it would be good for you to spend some time in New York.” She spoke cautiously. “You can come back after you’ve had time to cool off.”“I’m not staying there temporarily.” I gently cut her off.
