Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Gleaming Greenery
I had just reached the staircase when Sophia suddenly cried out behind me.

“Wait! The ring Dario gave me is missing!”

She frantically searched through her handbag, then rushed back to the table and looked around again.

Finally, her eyes landed on my suitcase. The panic on her face slowly gave way to hesitation.

“I clearly remember leaving the ring on the table, but it was gone after Evelyn finished packing.”

Lorenzo’s expression darkened instantly. His eyes fell on my suitcase.

“Open it.”

I stopped and turned to him, almost unable to believe what I had just heard.

“Why do you suspect me? Is it just because of one accusation from her?”

Lorenzo did not answer. He simply held out his hand and replied in a cold voice, “Take everything out. I’m going to search for it.”

From the day I came to the De Luca family, they had never treated me with suspicion. I had unrestricted access to every door, every safe, and even the family’s most confidential financial records.

Now, simply because Sophia had accused me without a shred of evidence, they treated me like a criminal who needed to be searched.

“What if I refuse?”

I looked at Lorenzo. My voice had gone cold.

Dario had already lost his patience. He snatched my suitcase away and dumped everything onto the floor.

Clothes spilled everywhere. Several books hit the corner of the wall. Everything I had just carefully packed was thrown into complete disarray.

Then a diamond ring rolled out.

Sophia covered her mouth, her eyes instantly filling with tears.

“Evelyn, if you didn’t like seeing me wear it, you could have just told me. Why did you have to secretly take it?”

“I didn’t take the ring!” My mind went completely blank.

“It fell out of your suitcase, yet you’re still trying to deny it?”

Lorenzo stepped in front of Sophia protectively. The next second, the sharp crack of a slap rang through the hall.

My face snapped to the side from the impact, and my body slammed hard against the wall. A high-pitched ringing filled my ears.

There was a metallic taste in my mouth. I touched the corner of my lips, and my fingertips came away stained with blood.

Every maid nearby lowered their heads. Not one of them dared to speak.

I could only stare at Lorenzo in stunned silence, forgetting the pain in my face entirely.

That was the first time he had ever hit me.

Lorenzo seemed to be stunned by his own actions, too. His eyes fell on the blood at the corner of my mouth, and his expression shifted. He instinctively reached toward me.

“Evelyn, I—”

“It’s fine.”

I wiped away the blood and stepped out of his hand’s reach.

I would consider that slap payment for the debt I owed the De Luca family for saving me all those years ago.

From this moment on, neither of us owed the other anything.

However, Dario stepped in front of me, blocking my way. “If you don’t apologize to Sophia in front of everyone today, you’re not leaving this house!”

His expression brought back the memory of a family banquet years ago.

At the time, the Serra family had been going through a difficult period, and a representative from another family deliberately humiliated me in front of everyone.

He poured an entire glass of wine over my dress, then laughed and told me to pour him another drink myself as an apology.

Dario had been the first to step forward. He pressed a gun to the man’s forehead and forced him to kneel and apologize to me.

Lorenzo went even further. He canceled every business deal between our families on the spot and never allowed that man to set foot in any Serra family property again.

That night, they stood on either side of me and said, “With us here, no one can ever force you to bow your head.”

Now, they would not even listen to a single word of my explanation.

I glanced at Sophia, hiding in Lorenzo’s arms.

“I never touched that ring. I refuse to accept this accusation!”

Dario’s face darkened completely.

“Evelyn, don’t make me get rough with you.”

I did not look at him again. I simply dragged my suitcase past him.

The main doors slowly closed behind me. This time, I did not look back.

Once I was in the car, I gave the driver a single instruction.

“Take me to Victoria’s.”

Matteo ignored the ugly expressions on Lorenzo and Dario’s faces. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a black diamond wedding band.I moved the ruby ring to my right hand, and he dropped to one knee and slipped the wedding band onto my finger.Dario’s eyes reddened. “Evelyn, are you really going to throw away twenty years of history with us for the power of the Romano family? I never knew you were this hungry for power.”I smiled. “If I really wanted the Romano family’s power, I would have married Matteo seven years ago. Then you wouldn’t even have the chance to stand here and judge me like you are now.”I raised my hand, revealing the wound on my palm. The mark from Lorenzo’s slap had still not faded from my cheek.“This is what the De Luca family left me with in the end.”The lawyer handed over the transfer documents.“On the day Miss Evelyn completed her marriage registration, Mrs. Serra transferred twenty years’ worth of living and medical expenses, plus interest, to t

Back then, I rejected the marriage for Lorenzo and Dario’s sake, yet Matteo had kept the authorization in place all these years, turning down lucrative marriage alliances with other families.Dario scoffed, “So in the end, this is still about Sophia. You married Matteo just to force us to take the rings back, didn’t you? Sophia is just a girl who lost her father. We gave her those rings so the other families would know she was under the De Luca family's protection. She could never replace you.”He stepped closer.“Just come back with us. We’ll give you your own room at the manor again. The De Luca family will cover all your expenses, and we’ll assign guards to you again.”Lorenzo suddenly grabbed my injured palm. Pain shot through my hand and all the way up my arm.“Come back to Sicily with me. I’ll personally tear up the Romano marriage contract. Whatever consequences there are between the two families, I’ll take full responsibility.”He said it as though it were the most natura

Before the call even ended, gunshots rang out downstairs. It was Lorenzo and Dario.By the time I reached the first floor, both of them had already been disarmed and stopped by the Romano guards.Lorenzo stared at me. “Tell me it’s not your name on the marriage registration with the Romano family.”When he first became Godfather, he announced to the entire family that my orders were his orders.Dario let out a cold laugh beside him. “Stop pretending. That marriage registration is nothing but a fake story your mother and the Romano matriarch cooked up together. The Serra family has nothing but a small fraction of its old business in New York left.“And you’re a sickly woman who could have an asthma attack at any moment. Why would the Romano family make you their future mistress?”I lowered my head and calmly smoothed the skirt of my dress, ignoring them.“Take your men and get out of here. This street belongs to the Romano family. It’s not somewhere you can just barge into when

“I can’t accept this. The meaning behind this ring is too significant.”Old Madam Romano gently pressed my hand down.“Then take your time getting used to what it means. And from now on, just call me Grandma.”She explained that Matteo had already given his authorization, then summoned the butler.“From today onward, Evelyn has full authority to use the family’s cars and security personnel. All family gatherings will be arranged as she wishes. No one is permitted to make decisions without consulting her. She is the mistress of the Romano family!”I was startled for a moment. Lorenzo said something similar to me back then.“Evelyn is the most honored young lady of the De Luca family. Her orders are my orders.”However, everything that had once belonged to me was later taken away. Sophia even broke my father’s pocket watch into pieces, and they still chose to protect her.My eyes stung with tears. Old Madam Romano tightened her grip on my hand.“There will always be a place for

The car pulled into the hospital, and the doctor bandaged my wounds.“It’s nothing serious, but you’ll need to keep your palm dry for now.”I held out my scorched passport for the driver to see.“Can we still leave as planned?”“I’ll contact the consulate and arrange an emergency travel document for you. The Romano family has arrived as well. They’ll wait for you and leave with you.”…Two days later.“Ms. Evelyn, the plane is ready.”I boarded the jet. The moment I landed in New York, I signed the marriage contract. By that evening, word of my marriage had spread throughout the entire Mafia underworld.Lorenzo messaged me.Lorenzo: [So this is another one of your little runaway acts to threaten me? Evelyn, when you’re done throwing a tantrum, come back. I’ll do you a favor and pretend none of this ever happened.]Dario sent me a screenshot with a caption too. Dario: [Why does the heir to the Serra family have the same name as you? You really went to New York?]I blocked

Victoria De Luca lived in a villa by the sea.The moment I stepped through the door, she heard my footsteps. When she turned around, the smile vanished from her face. Her eyes immediately fell on my swollen, reddened cheek.“Oh my! What happened? “Come here. Let me see how bad it is.”She reached out to touch me, but I instinctively turned my face away.“It doesn’t hurt anymore.”Victoria did not press me for an explanation. She simply had a maid bring out the first-aid kit and personally treated the swelling on my cheek.Only after she put down the cotton swab did I remove the De Luca family crest from my coat and place it in front of her.“I’m going back to New York. It’s time I returned this to you.”Victoria stared at the crest for a long moment without reaching for it.“Maybe it would be good for you to spend some time in New York.” She spoke cautiously. “You can come back after you’ve had time to cool off.”“I’m not staying there temporarily.” I gently cut her off.
