Chapter 1

The ever chatty System went quiet for once.

It then stammered to explain, “W-What do you mean? Your assigned target is the male lead, so you’ll have a happy ending with Patrick Suede.”

I let out a mocking smile.

For five years since I arrived at the Suede household, the System had only ever given me empty promises.

According to the System, Patrick’s snub and my suffering were just part of the trials of true love.

Patrick and I were bound to have our happily-ever-after.

It was a pity that it wasn’t the ending I was looking for.

Paying the System no mind, I rose to my feet and opened the door.

Patrick’s annoyed face stared back at me.

He glanced at me indifferently.

“Even if I forgot our appointment, you didn’t have to go this far and use Arabella to make me come to you. Skye, I had never known you to be so manipulative.”

I was taken aback.

To get him to celebrate this birthday with me, I had gone practically without sleep for three months.

At last, I made a breakthrough in Suede Corporation’s chip research and development.

Ecstatic, Patrick asked about what I wanted as a reward.

I cautiously asked if he could set aside some time for me.

The moment he readily said yes, I was overjoyed.

Here I thought we were getting closer.

To my dismay, it was all for nothing.

He dismissed me just by saying that he forgot.

The clicking of heels approached from behind.

Out of breath, Arabella climbed up to the sixth floor with a huge cake box in hand.

She pulled a funny look while standing between Patrick and me.

“So you didn’t stand her up to spend the day with me. You just didn’t remember Skye’s birthday?”

Furrowing his brows, Patrick answered matter-of-factly, “Why should I remember her birthday anyway?”

Arabella turned to me, her expression a mix of emotions.

An awkward silence hung heavily in the air.

Patrick loomed over me and acted like he was throwing me a bone.

“Since you’ve been committed to the company, go ahead and name your wish.”

I met his gaze.

“Can I ask for anything at all?”

Patrick paused for a bit before rubbing his nose. He shied away from my gaze.

“Of course.”

The System started shrieking in my mind.

“Aahh! Did you see that’ He’s shy. Hurry up and tell him that you want nothing more than to spend a day with him. You can go to the amusement park. Think about the fireworks! His love meter is going to go up like crazy.”

I quietly stared at Patrick for a couple of seconds and took a deep breath.

“Just pay me.”

Patrick’s smile went stiff. “What?”

I looked up callously. “Give me some money. My rent is due.”

With a grimace, Patrick hissed through his clenched teeth, “Your true colors are finally showing. Yet, you said it was never about the money.

Patrick scoffed, his knuckles cracking.

“Too late, Skye. Didn’t you want to be Mrs. Suede? Well, you can be at peace with working your bottom off for Suede Corporation for the rest of your life.”

Patrick stormed off.

Looking conflicted, Arabella handed me the cake.

“Uh… Happy birthday.”

I squeezed a smile. “I know you’re only here for the drama, but thank you.”

Once the door slid shut, the System started howling like mad.

“Jesus. What did you do? He was already feeling bad about forgetting your birthday. Why did you have to ruin the moment by saying that?”

I looked down at the rent reminder from my landlady.

“What else was I supposed to do? I still need to survive, you know.”

As Patrick couldn’t stand me over the years, I was paid less than the cleaning lady in the building, as the chief engineer at Suede Corporation.

The System froze.

“But that’s just the male lead being difficult. He doesn’t realize his feelings for you yet. Once you tie the knot with him, everything of his will belong to you.”

The doorbell rang, and the delivery guy popped his head in while holding a cake box. “This is from Mr. Suede.”

The System turned smug. “I told you that he cares about you. Look, he got you a cake, but you pushed him away. Get in touch with him right now and get him back.’

I stared silently at the chunks of mango spread across the top of the cake.

Out of nowhere, I turned to the System.

“Do you recall the day I arrived five years ago?”

Patrick stood at the doorway of my office, looking more haggard than he did at the press conference. His suit was wrinkled, his tie hung crookedly to the side, and his eyes were bloodshot. Peeking from behind me, Arabella scoffed. “I believe you are lost, Mr. Suede.” Not giving her the time of day, Patrick stared right into my eyes. “I need a word with you, Skye.” He took a step forward, only for Arabella to shield me behind her. I gave Arabella a pat on the shoulder. “It’s okay. Let him speak.” Arabella shot him an angry look before reluctantly giving way. Still, she stuck around. Putting her weight on the desk, she didn’t take her eyes away from him. Patrick inhaled deeply. “It’s over for Suede Corporation.” I said nothing. “I know I deserve it. I tried to salvage your business proposal, the one I dumped in the trash can, but it’s too late.” His voice trembled. “Skye, I’m not asking for your forgiveness. I just… I just want to let you know that you’re the most i

In the following six months, Brimble Network’s AI chip project made rapid progress.Fueled by an adrenaline rush, Arabella took me around the world. Our destinations included Silicon Valley, London, Tokyo, Singapore…. We made our presence known in every leading tech hub, securing one major partnership after another. “Skye, don’t you think we are born to be business partners?” Arabella slumped against the hotel sofa, clutching a wine bottle with a silly grin. “Why didn’t I notice sooner that working with you would be an absolute blast?” I stared at the computer screen, not even looking up. “You were too busy fighting with me over a guy.” Arabella choked before roaring with laughter. “Right, right. I’m the big dummy passing up on an amazing partner just to obsess over some toxic guy.”She scrambled up and got close to me, the alcohol in her breath brushing against my face. “Seriously, though. Do you still hate me?” I looked up, meeting her sparkling eyes. Hate? Five

Since the day the mission was declared a success, the System vanished.Three months later, the System reemerged as I was stepping out of Brimble Network after picking up a late shift. “It’s been a while, Player. Have you been well?” I grinned. “Pretty good. Things have been a whole lot better than before.” The System fell silent for a bit. “I’ve passed along your feedback to headquarters. You’re the first player to pull off a successful quest after switching assigned targets. We might be expecting a huge change in our upcoming conquest.” I stopped in my tracks and uttered, “To be fair, I’m not putting the blame on you. I was too attached to the fleeting kindness five years ago, and I ended up making the same mistake. Still, I want to say that the relationships between women shouldn’t be limited to the heroine and villainess fighting over some man. We are all human beings with our own feelings and minds.” The System sighed. “You have a point. We’ll make improvements. Pe

Silence settled over the room until notification pings began spilling in from every direction.Standing on stage, I noticed color draining from Patrick’s face. I grabbed my phone, and the push notification from a financial news outlet came up. “Brimble Network Secures over 1 Billion in Investment from the UK’s Rothschild Fund, Doubling AI Chip Project Valuation.” Gasps filled the air as all eyes turned to the entrance. Arabella, dressed in a burgundy evening gown, strutted into the hall in her heels with a smirk. Behind her was a group of foreign executives in suits. The man at the front was none other than the managing director for the Rothschild Fund of the region. “I’m sorry for the fashionably late entrance.” She gave me a wink. “My flight was delayed, almost running our pitch presentation.” I stood in daze as Arabella came on stage and took over the microphone. “The technology that Ms. Simms just presented will be the Brimble Network’s strategic direction for

In my next three months with Brimble Network, Patrick never reached out to me. Arabella paired me with the best team and granted me the highest level of clearance. I threw myself into work to the point of forgetting sleep and food. Occasionally, I would get updates on Patrick through the social media of others. I simply smiled when someone brought him up in conversation on purpose. With time, even the System gave up and left me alone. I ran into Patrick at an industry summit once. At the time, I was on stage presenting our core technology, my confidence overflowing. Patrick stared at me among the audience, his mind blank. When we brushed past one another after the event, he called out to me. “If you choose to come back, I can forget the whole thing even happen.” My eyes ran through his familiar facial features, yet his face looked so strange. Taking a step back, I kept myself distant and aloof. Patrick, his smile disappearing, pulled a long face. “Very well.

First thing on Monday, I showed up outside Brimble Network. The System wouldn’t stop yapping in my head. “Are you sure about this, Player? We are in Arabella’s territory now. According to the plot, she’ll…” While walking into the office building, I asked, “She’ll what?” “She’ll have a complete set of office supplies and a work station ready for you. The office assistant will get you breakfast, too. Huh? That’s not quite the villainess I expect…” I burst into laughter. Even five years back, I knew that Arabella wasn’t some spoiled, willful heiress. If the System hadn’t cast us as rivals, things between us might not have ended up this way.The elevator door slid open, but before I could walk out, Arabella was right outside, waiting for me. She checked me out, her brows furrowed. “Didn’t I get you a new wardrobe? What’s with the outfit choice?” I looked down at my white blouse. “Those clothes were too expensive. I just—” She cut me off. “Just wear what I gave you. Quit
