Chapter 8

Author: Maroon Cypress
Before I could get a word out, my daughter suddenly ran toward the entrance. She threw herself into Grace’s arms the moment she walked through the door, pouting as she pointed at Cara.

“Mom, you’re finally here! That lady said Dad doesn’t love me. She said he only loves her!”

Everyone scrambled to greet Grace with overly polite smiles.

She nodded faintly in acknowledgment, then held our daughter’s hand and walked straight up to me. Her tone was calm but carried the unmistakable authority of someone who was in control.

“You don’t like the child I gave birth to, but you like her?” Grace glanced sideways at Cara, whose makeup was already smeared with tears, then asked again. “This is the ex you mentioned?”

Worried she’d be upset, I hurried to explain. “That’s all in the past. Right now, there’s no room in my heart for anyone but you and our daughter.”

Cara’s eyes widened in disbelief, her eyes brimming with tears. “George, what did you just say?”

Grace still looked unconvinced, so

I let out a bitter laugh. In my last life, I gave her everything, but because I couldn’t give her the kind of passionate, fiery love she craved, she abandoned me.“It’s too late now, Cara,” I said. “No one waits forever. If you come closer again, I’ll call security.”Without looking back, I turned and walked through the doors of Lowe Corporation’s headquarters. … I didn’t see her again after that. The next time I heard her name was three years later.Cara, the award-winning actress at the peak of her fame, had jumped from the nineteenth floor of a hotel due to severe depression. She was found dead in a white dress with lace trim, something far too youthful for her age. That dress was the very first gift I ever gave her when she became an adult. After her death, everyone assumed Luthen, her long-time partner, would inherit her estate. However, online sleuths quickly uncovered the truth. As it turned out, they were never legally married, and the public image of Cara as a glam

In the corner of the ballroom, Cara sat silently, her eyes dim as she stared blankly at my back. There was a lingering sadness in her gaze. The charity gala went smoothly. Over the years, we’d donated a fair amount, both through the company and personally, to different causes. However, by chance, we found out that not all of the funds had been used the way they were supposed to. Therefore, I suggested, why not start our own charity foundation? I could help manage the funds, and if we did things right, we might help the people who truly needed it. She agreed immediately and even offered up a billion-dollar collection to support the idea. The funds we raised were carefully allocated to disaster relief zones. I personally ensured that every donated item was marked with the label “Donation, Not For Sale”.That night, back home, I tucked my daughter into bed before logging onto my computer to respond to some work messages. That was when I saw a friend request pop up from Cara. I didn’t

“I helped you prep for exams, stayed up late tutoring you, worked part-time jobs to save up for your tuition, not because I loved you, but because my mom made me promise on her deathbed to take care of you. I always saw you as a little sister.“You were the one who asked to start a relationship and the one who ended it. Maybe I wasn’t sure of my feelings back then, but after meeting Grace, I finally realized what real love is. Love isn’t one person giving everything while the other takes. It’s two people working together, protecting something they both treasure.“She’s the one who showed me love could be sweet—that marriage could be fulfilling and that having a child is something to be hoped for, not feared.”I returned her own words to her, word for word.“The only person I love is Grace. This obsession you’re holding onto is exhausting. I’ve started a new life. I hope you can do the same and let go of your feelings for me.”Cara covered her face and broke down in tears.I didn’

I gently patted my daughter’s head, comforting her with a soft voice. “It’s okay. I’ll change out of it in a bit. But you weren’t being very good, huh? Didn’t we agree no sweets?”She stuck out her tongue and lowered her head without saying a word.Just then, a sharp voice cut in. “And what she wants to eat is any of your business? George, don’t you think you’re being a little too controlling?”I took my daughter’s hand and turned to face Luthen’s hostile glare.“She’s my daughter. Since when do you get a say in how I raise her?”That was when it finally clicked for Luthen. His face froze in shock as he stared at me.“Did I hear that right? That little girl called you ‘Dad’ earlier?”A wave of murmurs swept through the crowd.“Oh my god! Could he be Ms. Grace Lowe’s husband?”Cara’s gaze darted between me and my daughter. A sudden realization seemed to strike her, and she said, voice cold and certain, “George, what trick did you pull to get that child to call you ‘Dad’? I’m

Luthen’s eyes lit up with curiosity. He leaned in and asked eagerly, “You don’t mean Grace Lowe, do you? I’ve heard she’s insanely accomplished. She speaks sixteen languages, offloaded all her real estate assets right before the housing market crashed, and reinvested it all into the hottest AI projects. People call her a genius in the investment world.”Cara replied, “That’s right. If I can leverage my connection with the Lowes, the major film I’ve been planning will have no trouble securing funding.”Just the mention of Grace Lowe sent a buzz through the room.“She’s always so low-key. If it weren’t for this charity auction, I doubt we’d even get the chance to see her in person.”“Exactly! I heard she’s putting ten billion’s worth of collectibles up for auction herself. She’s so humble and still devoted to charity. She’s the model for our generation.”“I heard she’s already married, and her daughter’s a genius too. The kid is only seven, but she’s already accepted into a junior a
