Chapter 3

作者: Rudy
Hailey was up early the next morning.

Spencer slept until 10:00 am. When he finally emerged from the bedroom, he found Hailey sitting at the table, writing. Rubbing his eyes, he wandered over.

Her notebook was filled with writing. As he read, he realized she'd made a list of things she wanted to do.

First, visit her childhood home and catch up with old friends.

Second, feed the pigeons by the lake.

Third, go to a bar, get drunk, and wake up with a hangover.

"Hailey, what's all this?"

Hailey paused, pen in hand, and glanced up at him. "It's a wish list."

Spencer seemed to remember something, and a smile crossed his face. "You made a wish list when you were 17, too..."

He stopped himself, looking as though he regretted bringing it up.

Hailey knew why. He was afraid that talking about the past would upset her.

But she'd long since come to terms with what had happened. Those memories no longer hurt the way they used to, so she picked up where he'd left off.

"Yeah. I made a list of 100 things I wanted to do before I turned 18. Bungee jumping, skiing, whitewater rafting, surfing... Some of them were pretty crazy. But you were even crazier.

"You documented every adventure and did every single one of them with me."

Hearing her talk about those days brought back a flood of memories for Spencer, and he smiled.

"What can I say? I was crazy about you. Whatever you wanted to do, I wanted to do with you. As long as we were together, I wasn't afraid of anything. I even jumped from hundreds of feet up with my eyes closed."

Hailey watched him quietly, his face lighting up as he reminisced.

When he finally looked down at her, she said, "I haven't seen you smile like that in a long time."

Spencer's smile faltered. After a few awkward seconds, he changed the subject.

"Why don't I do everything on this list with you, too?"

Hailey shook her head, unwilling to budge. "It's my wish list, not yours. Besides, you're always so busy with work. You don't have to come with me."

There was something about Hailey's calm expression that unsettled Spencer, though he couldn't quite put his finger on why.

He was about to try persuading her again when his phone rang. One look at the screen, and his face lit up.

"It's work," he said, turning to leave without even waiting for her response.

Hailey watched him go, taken aback.

In the past, whenever she'd wanted to try something on her own, Spencer had refused to be left behind. He'd begged and pestered her, then stubbornly tagged along anyway.

But things were different now.

He hadn't even tried to change her mind. He hadn't so much as said he'd be worried about her.

People said marriage killed love. Hailey had never believed it.

Now she did.

They hadn't even had the chance to grow old together. Somewhere along the way, the love they'd once shared had slowly worn away, leaving nothing but exhaustion.

Hailey finished her list in silence.

Then, in the blank space at the top of the page, she carefully wrote My Final Wishes.

Just as she finished, her phone lit up beside her.

It was another message from Candace. This time, she'd sent a photo of herself sitting in the passenger seat of Spencer's car.

At first, Candace's messages had hurt so badly Hailey could barely stand it. But after so many, she'd gone numb.

Without a word, she opened her laptop, transferred the latest message to it, and printed it out. Then she tucked the printout into a drawer alongside her wish list.

The drawer was already filled with messages she'd saved over the past few days, each one another attempt by Candace to get a rise out of her.

To Hailey, death would mean an end to her suffering. But that didn't mean she was going to quietly step aside and let Spencer and Candace have their happy ending.

If Spencer didn't love her anymore, he should've been honest with her instead of falling for another woman behind her back. And Candace had no right to keep rubbing it in her face.

The woman who'd sent those cruel messages was nothing like the wonderful woman Spencer had described in his diary.

Hailey would be more than happy to show him who Candace really was.

The other side of Candace's face began to swell almost immediately. She knew there was no reasoning with Spencer now. As far as she was concerned, there was nothing human left in him.But she wasn't about to die here. Not for a woman she'd only met a handful of times.Fear for her life gave Candace a sudden burst of strength. She wrenched herself free of his grip and fought back, sinking her teeth into him and tearing at his flesh. She screamed, "Hailey killed herself! Why the hell should I have to die for her? Why? She's the one who gave up. She's the one who chose to end her life. What's that got to do with me?"All I did was tell her the truth. If I hadn't, you'd have kept her in the dark for the rest of her life! She couldn't walk, her future was ruined, and she'd have spent the rest of her life with a cheating husband who lied to her face!"Can you imagine anything more pathetic? I saved her from that! Can't you see? Without me, she'd still be suffering, believing every disg

For a long while, neither of them spoke.Spencer watched as Candace hurriedly zipped the briefcase shut and tossed it into the back seat as if it had burned her. Then he locked the doors and hit the window-lock switch."Look familiar?"His voice was perfectly casual, as though he'd merely asked where she wanted to go next.Candace heard the soft chime as the car doors locked. Her blood ran cold. A chill sharper than the winter wind outside crept up her spine to the base of her skull. She pulled her hand back, tucked her feet in, and pressed herself against the passenger door. She forced a smile."Spencer, what's wrong? Didn't you say your eyes were bothering you?"Spencer smiled as Candace continued to play innocent. He even adopted her usual sweet, cheerful tone."Yeah, those messages were pretty painful to read. What about you? Now that you've seen them, is anything bothering you? Your eyes? Your heart? Anything else?"The way he mimicked her, all while wearing that stiff, h

Candace came downstairs, dragging a large suitcase behind her. The moment she saw Spencer waiting, she hurried over and threw herself into his arms."Spencer, I thought you were still angry with me. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said those things. Thank you for giving me another chance."The strong fragrance wafting from her hair made Spencer's stomach turn again. He fought back the urge to vomit and said nothing. He took her suitcase in one hand and slipped his other arm around her waist, guiding her slowly toward the car.Candace glanced down at his arm, her heart fluttering with excitement. A blush crept into her cheeks. In the five months they'd known each other, Spencer had rarely initiated physical affection. She took it as a sign that he'd finally put his grief behind him and was ready to be with her.Unable to contain her excitement, she spoke up. "Have you been eating properly? You've lost so much weight I barely recognize you. It breaks my heart to see you like this."Sp

On the morning of the dedication of Hailey’s memorial, Spencer left the apartment. He'd shaved, cut his hair short, and showered before dressing in black.Downstairs, he threw away the trash he'd gathered. Then he looked up at the seventh-floor window, where the blue curtains still hung.He stood there for a long time, unable to tear his eyes away.As the first rays of sunlight broke through, he finally turned away. He pulled his keys from his pocket and carefully removed the little doll charm from the key ring. Then he dropped the keys into a storm drain. He went to the garage, got into his car, and drove straight to Elaren Hill.He had no idea where Hailey was buried. Starting at the foot of the hill, he worked his way up, checking each headstone as he went.Halfway up, he spotted Nadine standing in front of a grave. The tension finally left his body. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and walked toward her."Mom," he called softly.Nadine ignored him. She crouched in fron

There were 26 pages in all, each filled with printed text messages. Black-and-white photos appeared among the messages, stirring memories of the past few months. He examined the pages one by one, his eyes drawn to the photos first. He recognized every single one. Many of the originals were still on his phone, which he'd left switched off since shutting himself away after the funeral.By the time he reached the last photograph, a strange tingling had spread through his temples. It wasn't painful, but somehow, the sensation snapped him out of his daze.Spencer gathered up the scattered pages and struggled to his feet. He stumbled back to the bedroom, turned on the light, and found the phone he'd tossed into a corner. He plugged it in and held down the power button. Hailey's photo was still on his lock screen, and her birthday was still his passcode. But when he opened his photo gallery, he found barely a dozen pictures of them together, all taken before September. There wasn't a sin
