Chapter 7

作者: Rudy
Back home, Spencer carefully cleaned and bandaged Hailey's injuries, overcome with guilt and worry.

He spent the next few days at home, never straying far from her side.

Hailey seemed unmoved by his remorse.

Late one night, after the house had gone quiet, she wheeled herself into the study and found the diary Spencer thought he'd hidden so well.

She opened it and found an entire page filled with the same sentence, written over and over.

"Spencer, you're such a bastard."

Hailey closed the diary.

She'd barely left the study when the bedroom door flew open. Spencer rushed out barefoot, his clothes in disarray. The moment he saw she was safe, he let out a long sigh of relief.

"Hailey, what are you doing out here by yourself so late?"

Hailey looked away and lied without batting an eye. "I was thirsty. I just wanted some water."

Spencer immediately went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of water. He still sounded shaken as he handed it to her.

"Next time, just call me if you need anything. I don't think I could take another scare like that."

Hailey looked up and met his eyes. "Spencer, is there something you've been keeping from me?"

The question caught Spencer off guard, but he shook his head. "No."

If he'd only told her the truth, she would've let him go.

But even now, he refused to be honest with her.

Hailey closed her eyes, then forced a smile to hide her disappointment.

The next day, Hailey took out her photo album and began cutting every picture to pieces, making no effort to hide what she was doing.

Spencer stared at the pieces of photos scattered across the floor. "Why would you cut them all up?"

Hailey couldn't be bothered to come up with a convincing excuse. She simply said the humidity had ruined the photos, so there was no point keeping them. They could always take new ones later.

The way she brushed it off unsettled Spencer. He couldn't tell whether to believe her.

The following day, Hailey asked the housekeeper to clear out all the matching mugs, scarves, outfits, and keychains she'd kept in a cabinet. She had everything taken downstairs and thrown away.

When Spencer noticed, he asked her why. Hailey brushed him off, claiming the things had gone moldy.

Soon afterward, she donated every gift he'd ever given her to charity. She told him they were out of style anyway, and he could always buy her new ones.

Day after day, Hailey got rid of more of her belongings. Her things had once filled the room, but little by little, they disappeared until there was nothing of hers left.

Yet Spencer seemed to have no idea what it all meant.

On the anniversary of her parents' deaths, Spencer accompanied Hailey to the cemetery. But as she spoke to her parents, something she said unsettled him.

"Mom, Dad, I hope you're both doing okay up there. Don't worry about me. I'll see you soon..."

On previous visits, Hailey had always told her parents how much she missed them.

This time, though, her words left Spencer increasingly uneasy. He was just about to ask what she meant when a familiar voice spoke from behind them.

"Spencer, Hailey. What a coincidence."

Spencer turned in surprise, forgetting what he'd been about to ask Hailey.

Candace stood a few steps away, looking as though she were in pain.

Spencer noticed she was barely putting any weight on her left foot, and concern immediately crossed his face.

"What are you doing here? Did you hurt yourself?"

"I came to visit my grandma's grave. The ground was slippery from the rain, and I twisted my ankle."

She sounded helpless, and Spencer instinctively stepped forward to steady her.

Candace looked up at him, her eyes glistening with tears. "Spencer, could you take me to the hospital?"

Spencer felt even worse for Candace and agreed without a second thought.

He turned to Hailey just long enough to say, "Hailey, why don't you stay and spend a little more time with your parents? I'll take Candace to the hospital and be right back."

Neither of them bothered to ask Hailey what she wanted. They simply left her behind at the cemetery.

The other side of Candace's face began to swell almost immediately. She knew there was no reasoning with Spencer now. As far as she was concerned, there was nothing human left in him.But she wasn't about to die here. Not for a woman she'd only met a handful of times.Fear for her life gave Candace a sudden burst of strength. She wrenched herself free of his grip and fought back, sinking her teeth into him and tearing at his flesh. She screamed, "Hailey killed herself! Why the hell should I have to die for her? Why? She's the one who gave up. She's the one who chose to end her life. What's that got to do with me?"All I did was tell her the truth. If I hadn't, you'd have kept her in the dark for the rest of her life! She couldn't walk, her future was ruined, and she'd have spent the rest of her life with a cheating husband who lied to her face!"Can you imagine anything more pathetic? I saved her from that! Can't you see? Without me, she'd still be suffering, believing every disg

For a long while, neither of them spoke.Spencer watched as Candace hurriedly zipped the briefcase shut and tossed it into the back seat as if it had burned her. Then he locked the doors and hit the window-lock switch."Look familiar?"His voice was perfectly casual, as though he'd merely asked where she wanted to go next.Candace heard the soft chime as the car doors locked. Her blood ran cold. A chill sharper than the winter wind outside crept up her spine to the base of her skull. She pulled her hand back, tucked her feet in, and pressed herself against the passenger door. She forced a smile."Spencer, what's wrong? Didn't you say your eyes were bothering you?"Spencer smiled as Candace continued to play innocent. He even adopted her usual sweet, cheerful tone."Yeah, those messages were pretty painful to read. What about you? Now that you've seen them, is anything bothering you? Your eyes? Your heart? Anything else?"The way he mimicked her, all while wearing that stiff, h

Candace came downstairs, dragging a large suitcase behind her. The moment she saw Spencer waiting, she hurried over and threw herself into his arms."Spencer, I thought you were still angry with me. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said those things. Thank you for giving me another chance."The strong fragrance wafting from her hair made Spencer's stomach turn again. He fought back the urge to vomit and said nothing. He took her suitcase in one hand and slipped his other arm around her waist, guiding her slowly toward the car.Candace glanced down at his arm, her heart fluttering with excitement. A blush crept into her cheeks. In the five months they'd known each other, Spencer had rarely initiated physical affection. She took it as a sign that he'd finally put his grief behind him and was ready to be with her.Unable to contain her excitement, she spoke up. "Have you been eating properly? You've lost so much weight I barely recognize you. It breaks my heart to see you like this."Sp

On the morning of the dedication of Hailey’s memorial, Spencer left the apartment. He'd shaved, cut his hair short, and showered before dressing in black.Downstairs, he threw away the trash he'd gathered. Then he looked up at the seventh-floor window, where the blue curtains still hung.He stood there for a long time, unable to tear his eyes away.As the first rays of sunlight broke through, he finally turned away. He pulled his keys from his pocket and carefully removed the little doll charm from the key ring. Then he dropped the keys into a storm drain. He went to the garage, got into his car, and drove straight to Elaren Hill.He had no idea where Hailey was buried. Starting at the foot of the hill, he worked his way up, checking each headstone as he went.Halfway up, he spotted Nadine standing in front of a grave. The tension finally left his body. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and walked toward her."Mom," he called softly.Nadine ignored him. She crouched in fron

There were 26 pages in all, each filled with printed text messages. Black-and-white photos appeared among the messages, stirring memories of the past few months. He examined the pages one by one, his eyes drawn to the photos first. He recognized every single one. Many of the originals were still on his phone, which he'd left switched off since shutting himself away after the funeral.By the time he reached the last photograph, a strange tingling had spread through his temples. It wasn't painful, but somehow, the sensation snapped him out of his daze.Spencer gathered up the scattered pages and struggled to his feet. He stumbled back to the bedroom, turned on the light, and found the phone he'd tossed into a corner. He plugged it in and held down the power button. Hailey's photo was still on his lock screen, and her birthday was still his passcode. But when he opened his photo gallery, he found barely a dozen pictures of them together, all taken before September. There wasn't a sin
