Chapter 4 Excuses

Author: Tessa Bellamy
I was determined to uncover the truth and give Bruce justice. There was surveillance in the hospital room, but Leon had deliberately positioned himself so that he blocked most of the camera's view. All that could be seen was his back as he leaned in and said something.

Bruce flew into a rage right after that and coughed up blood.

Leon immediately defended himself, "I only told him to take care of his health. Who would've thought the old man would hit me? I'm the real victim here."

It was such a lame, flimsy excuse; I didn't believe a word of it.

My grandfather would never act so rashly.

Leon must have said something to him. I grabbed him by the neck as I roared, "What exactly did you say? Who allowed you to visit my grandfather? Who do you think you are?"

He put on a pitiful expression, but there was clear provocation hidden in his eyes.

My grandfather was my only kin. I lost it and slapped him right then and there.

Leon clearly didn't expect it and screamed in shock.

We ended up fighting in a corner of the hospital, but he couldn't beat me. Blood even spilled from the corner of his mouth.

The noise attracted a crowd, and Jolene finally pulled me away from Leon.

She actually slapped me in a fit of rage and impulse. "Look at yourself. What are you even doing? You're acting like a madman."

Tears still fell uncontrollably.

I had spent my entire life maintaining the image of a composed, elite heir. I didn't want to lose control like this. Still, that was my grandfather fighting for his life in there. I simply couldn't stay rational. It was the first time Jolene had ever seen me like this.

She tried to act magnanimously and end the situation. "Let's end this here. No more arguing."

I looked at her in disbelief, my voice turning sharp as I spat, "Jolene, don't forget. My grandfather once saved your life."

Leon, who was still gasping for breath, was also dissatisfied with her words. "He beat me up so badly. This isn't over."

Jolene handed him a black card as compensation.

When she turned back to me, there was finally a hint of guilt in her eyes.

"Yes. Leon's visit was inappropriate, but he didn't have bad intentions. You already beat him up. I'll make it up to Bruce later," she said. "However, I won't allow you to question Leon like this. You have no proof he did anything wrong."

I staggered away from her, my face flushed with anger. "Jolene, I regret ever meeting you in this life."

I swore I'd find the evidence if it were the last thing I did.

This was all my fault—I had let my guard down. I never thought Leon would be shameless enough to target my grandfather.

Jolene frowned, but I slapped that right off her face the very next second. No one could ever slap me and get away with it, especially not her.

Just then, a nurse rushed over. "Who is Bruce's grandson? The patient wants to talk to you. Please come with me."

I sat in the plaintiff's seat early on the day of the trial. I didn't bring Bruce along. After all, I didn't want to trigger him and send him to an early grave. Instead, I planned to sit here and return with the good news.Leon was brought into the courtroom. He looked noticeably older, drained of all energy until he saw me. He nearly lunged forward. "Jordan, can you withdraw the case? Let's settle this privately."He was finally afraid. Jolene hadn't come to see him at all over the past few days. He had spent the entire time drowning in anxiety. Fortunately, the bailiffs stopped him before he could get close to me.Jolene was also present.Leon was ultimately found guilty. The recorded audio was played in court and confirmed to be authentic after technical examination. So, the court permitted it as valid evidence. Leon had no strength left to argue. All he could do was beg. He turned toward Jolene. "Jolene, help me."Alas, there was only a scowl on her face. She heard the ver

Jolene stopped bothering me, so I focused on taking care of Bruce while preparing for the trial.Bruce looked guilty. "Jordan, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have stopped you from divorcing her. I never thought she'd turn into this… this monster. She used to be such a nice girl, yet she's now a shell of her former self."I couldn't help but laugh at his description. "A shell of her former self, eh? That's spot on, Grandpa. Let's just focus on ourselves from now on. They're nothing to us."He nodded in agreement. "I won't get worked up because of her anymore. We'll live well together."Jolene dropped by not long after. She came bearing gifts for Bruce, but didn't plead for Leon. "Bruce, I'll get to the end of this. I'm just glad you're alright."Bruce didn't give her a warm response. She felt guilty and left on her own. However, she felt an odd sense of emptiness growing inside her as she walked away, leaving her increasingly uneasy. She lit a cigarette—something she hadn't touch

Oh, Jolene didn't stop there. She even brought Leon home for the first time and kissed him passionately right in front of me.She thought that would make me lose my temper, but the doorbell rang the next second. She assumed it was the cake she ordered. Instead, a group of police officers entered. "Hello. Who is Leon Holmes? He is suspected of assault. Please come with us."Leon froze instantly. Even Jolene looked at them in disbelief. "Did you get the wrong person? That's impossible. Leon would never do something like that."Then, it hit her. She slowly turned her gaze toward me. "Jordan, did you call the police?"I stepped forward and admitted it, pointing him out to the officers. "Yes. I filed the report. Officers, it's him. I have evidence. All documentation is complete. I refuse any settlement. I only want him in jail."Leon's eyes turned red instantly as he grabbed Jolene. "Jolene, he still tried to frame me after beating me up last time! I didn't do anything. I only went

I was a grown man, but my legs still gave out slightly when the nurse came for me out of reflex. The fear I felt nearly sent me sprawling to the ground.I was afraid it would be bad news. Why did the nurse say my grandfather wanted to talk to me instead of telling me his condition first?I didn't dare ask. I was genuinely terrified. Jolene finally caught on as well. She stayed behind me, no matter how much Leon shouted at her to leave me to my own devices. It almost looked like she had finally remembered my grandfather's kindness.I had no energy to deal with her and just walked numbly. We both tried to enter the emergency room, but the nurse stopped her. "Only family may enter."Jolene immediately retorted, "I am family. You can't stop me."Fortunately, the nurse didn't budge. "The patient said it himself.. He has nothing to say to you. Only his grandson may enter."I followed the nurse inside and finally saw my grandfather, covered in tubes. I broke down crying without rest
