Oliver POV

“Sir? Mr. Manns?”

In my slumber, I heard someone calling and nudging me awake.

Blearily, I forced my eyes open and looked at that someone, feeling disoriented.

When recognition set in, I realized he was the house security.

Disappointment washed over that very instant when everything came into focus and realized where I was.

“What?” I asked tiredly.

I did not know how long I stayed slumped on the floor with my back against Veronica’s door.

I don't care either.

“You will get a kink in your neck, sir. Are you drunk?” The security looked quizzically at me, forcing me to stand up to look around me.

Except for the two of us, the hallway is deserted.

Then, I checked my wristwatch and grimaced when I noticed the time.

“Has Ms. Miller arrived?” I asked, my voice sounded hoarse to my ears.

The security shook his head.

I sighed and sat down again, occupying the same position I had from earlier.

It felt as if my strength had left me.

  • Goodbye Jerk, Hello Mr. Perfect?   Chapter 169. Clear Things Up

Oliver POVI wanted to shout at her to get some sense into her head, but I can’t seem to penetrate Veronica now. She looked so far away. I don’t know what happened overnight that she was able to build her guards up - the same guards that I labored to tear down one by one in the past days. “Can grief really make a person stone-hearted?” I asked Lucas when I came to his office the next day. Veronica and I did not settle anything because right after telling me about that man, she requested me to leave. I didn’t want to, but I felt that her reaction was part of her grieving process, so I maintained my distance. I left her house and met the man she got home with, who I later learned was Alfred Mitchell. We shook hands, but right after that, I went back to my apartment, banging the door shut in my frustration. I figured I needed to give Veronica time, so I made myself busy until I found myself slumped on my sofa. I did not realize I had slept, but the kink on my neck was a clear ind

Veronica POVI winced as the excitement slowly faded from Oliver’s eyes when he saw me with Red.He looked at us in his usual deep, penetrating gaze. Longing filled me.Until he pierced it with a cutting tone, full of distaste. “Where have you been?”The sharpness of his tone and the accusatory way he greeted me made my temper boil. Oliver’s eyes never veered away from Red’s figure standing beside me. Then, he shifted his eyes, and our gazes locked. I could see jealousy written all over his face. Still, I shoved it aside thinking it was just a figment of my hyperactive imagination. Jealousy is for someone who feels something for you. And based on what I had seen last night, Oliver does not feel anything for me. Maybe he did for a while. Perhaps he thought that since the love of his life, I could be her substitute, but last night ended all that. She was back. The thought magnified the pain I was feeling when I shot back. “That is none of your business,” I told him in an equa

Veronica POVRed looked embarrassed when I whipped my head around to stare at him sharply. He rubbed the back of his head. His expression was apologetic. I nearly reproached him if I did not realize that it was an offhand remark. “I am sorry. That was uncalled for. We contracted an agency to tail you for a long time, and I always get the first copy of their report. I saw clips and printouts of your face all the time. I don’t mean bad about the comment, and don’t you be awkward around me if you ever agree to your father’s request.” The lengthy explanation was unnecessary, but maybe he needed to say that to clear the unease that would arise in the future. I let it slide and continued exploring the office. Then, he brought me to the other office. “This will be our office.” I saw four cubicles and a large table at the back. “Presently, I have three assistants working for your father. If you will take the job he was offering, you will be the fourth assistant to form part of our

Veronica POVAfter my father and I talked, he invited me to his building. It was the first time I stepped foot on his property, which according to him, will be part of my inheritance. “I am hoping that you consider working here from now on.” My father said. I took in the entire executive floor where my father is currently holding office before I turned my head back to face him. “Doing what?”“I wanted to prepare you for the position of CEO. You can start by working for Greg. He is my chief executive assistant. You can be his assistant.” “But, but, but ..” I stuttered. “I don’t know anything about being an assistant,” I said.My voice hinted at a protest.I had no foreknowledge of an executive job. I primarily work for the marketing department of SF conglomerates. What do I know about running a business? My father smiled. It was like he could see through my uncertainty.“I am sure Red will help you learn the ropes. You can learn a lot from him.”I sighed. I wanted to know my

Oliver POVWith no options left, I began to trace my way back to our apartment with the hope that Veronica was already there and that there was an explanation for her absence.I kept hoping that she was stalled elsewhere.I don’t want to overthink or worry excessively about things that I have no control over. All I am praying for is for Veronica to be safe and sound. While driving, I kept looking at sidewalks, eager for a glimpse of her. Every time I caught a woman with even a modicum of similarity to her frame or appearance or her hair, I would stare at it for seconds, but who am I kidding?Even without staring hard, I knew Veronica.
