Katherine POV
“Please, Greg. Don’t do this. Erin needs you.” I begged, but it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. Greg brushed past me to pick their scattered clothes on the floor. He gently pushed Noreen toward his private room before following her, shutting it firmly and leaving me outside feeling like a fool. “Where is Greg?” A voice called my attention. In my absorption of my pain, I did not realize that someone had barged in on the office. Startled, I quickly wiped my tears away and turned my head toward the direction of the door. I was surprised to see Lucas Sanders, Greg’s new boss coming in, playing with a key in his hand and realized it was a duplicate key to this office. Lucas strode toward me, his eyes narrowing as he studied my face. I stepped back, cringing inside, hating the inspection because it made me feel exposed. “What happened?” He asked curiously, staring at me as if he could see through my soul. I don’t know if it was just me, but since the conference meeting a few months back where SF Conglomerates, the company that this man owns expressed interest to buy Freeway Robotics, Greg’s company, I had this impression that the man disliked me. He was not rude or impolite, I just sensed that there was something about me that he did not like, so I always stayed clear of him. I don’t know if he noticed, but if he’s coming the other way, I would turn around and go the opposite direction to avoid him. I was about to respond when the door to Greg’s private room reopened and he got out holding Noreen’s hand. Greg’s eyes were fixed on me. His jaw hardened and he demanded. “I thought I already made myself clear. What are you still doing here?” This time, his voice sounded harsh not like earlier when he still sounded guilty. I opened my mouth but no words came out. It was as if something was stuck in my throat. I feel self-conscious. Lucas Sanders is an intelligent man and any moment now, he would be able to put the pieces together to conclude the failure of my marriage. While I stood there in a pool of embarrassment, hoping that the ground would open to swallow me, Lucas Sanders butted in. “Is that the way to talk to your wife, Greg?” The censure in his tone confused me. I thought, like any other man, he would take Greg’s side, but he didn’t. Greg’s eyes widened in shock and startlement when it sank in that his boss was outside his private office. “What are you doing here, Lucas?” Greg asked, trying to sound casual and acting like it was no big deal that he had been caught red-handed.. “I asked you first. Why are you talking to your wife like that?” Again, the stern tone surprised me. It did not add up to my initial impression of the man. Greg’s expression soured when he realized that Lucas Sanders is not going to let the matter go. When Greg failed to respond, Lucas continued. “Did you let your wife wait here while you have s*x with your mistress?” Lucas Sanders hissed. The certainty in his tone made it appear that he knew all along about Greg and Noreen’s affair. Noreen gasped, and Greg immediately worked on stroking her arm as if to soothe her. The action did not escape my eyes. The blatant display of affection made me bite my lip hard. “You don’t know our issues, Lucas. It was best for you to back off.” My husband bit out in a barely restrained voice, probably in deference to Mr. Sanders’ stature. Despite that, Lucas Sander’s jaw twitched. He slowly shook his head. “You made it my business when you did your dirty deed in my company, Greg. I don’t care what your issues are with your wife, but this office is my property.” He countered. “Stop meddling. This is between Katherine and me.” Greg hissed with a hint of impatience in his voice. “Then, you better explain to HR why I wouldn’t fire you immediately for using my company’s time and money for your dalliances. If that is how you do business, then, I don’t think we can do business together, Greg.” Lucas said before he stormed off the office, leaving me, Greg and his mistress. Tension filled the room after Mr. Sanders left. Then, Greg pierced me with his accusing glare. He was downright livid. “See the trouble you caused me?” Greg burst out. Then, he angrily went to his desk drawer and pulled out a folder. “Sign this.” He said, thrusting the folder in my direction. I took it and had a sinking feeling when I opened the flap. “Divorce? You want to divorce me so you can marry her?” I accused. My voice filled with bitterness. Greg met my accusing gaze with unflinching ones. “And why not? I love Noreen.” The declaration of love was like a knife Greg thrust mercilessly to my chest. “Sign it, Katherine. It would be best for everyone around.”Greg POVNoreen’s car was hot in pursuit as my car dashed down the highway. At a stoplight, I heaved a sigh. The traffic light indicates a yellow light. I stepped on the accelerator. Once I got past it, the light turned to red, stalling Noreen’s car.The reprieve allowed me an uninterrupted ride until we reached the emergency of St. Martin Hospital. The doctors immediately attended to Erin. They pulled out their records, and within minutes, a group of doctors came running to attend to her.I stepped away, feeling out of sorts.
Greg POV"What did you do?" I looked askance at Noreen's smug face when she presented her “little surprise” to me.I was not expecting this. In fact, I decided not to do anything with her.But she kept coming to my house like she owned it. It irritated the h*ll out of me that she kept pestering me when I didn’t want anything to do with her.The last time she came here, I changed all the locks, so now she is resorting to creating noises that attract my neighbors. The homeowners association already issued a warning. Their next stop is to call the police.I don’t want any disturbance. All I want is my peace. I ne
Lucas POVI watched Oliver slouching on my office couch. His legs dangled on the couch’s armrest while his head was on the opposite armrest. In his stomach was his half-eaten sandwich. “Oliver, you are not listening.” I frustratedly called out his name when I thought that he was already sleeping. I nearly marched up to him to pull him up and throw him out of my office, but I couldn’t do that. I needed to talk to someone. Since this morning, when she learned that we were leaving for Disney after Erin’s school ended, she was not too happy with me. When we left the hotel and up until the ride to Erin’s school, she acted okay, but when Erin disappeared into her building, that’s when the cold treatment started. “Are you mad at me?” I asked when we stopped at a red light.I can’t stand her silence anymore. Katherine snorted. “What do you think?” She asked frostily. I sighed when the traffic light turned green, and I had to concentrate on driving, but from time to time, I would steal
Lucas POVThe day started bright and sunny when I opened my eyes to the realization that I was lying in bed, flanked on each side by my two favorite girls. I smiled when I remembered my argument with our daughter last night. After we got inside our hotel room, Erin was surprisingly awake and excitedly wanted to be put down. When her feet landed on the carpeted floor, she began to explore every corner of the room. She was like a ball of energy, unlike earlier when drowsiness had overtaken her completely. Erin dashed from one corner of the room to the other until the view outside caught her attention. She stood in front of the half-silvered glass windows, mouth agape as she stared at the city lights from neighboring high-rise buildings and other establishments below that formed the nighttime cityscape.“It’s like the view in our apartment!” She exclaimed in undisguised awe. Katherine persuaded her to sit down on the bed, but she was so hyper. I stood next to her, allowing myself t
Lucas POVThe merriment continued. My friends were having a good time. I watched Duke when he borrowed the microphone from the head singer before talking to the band to play his favorite rock song. Then, the four of them sang and jammed to the delight of my PR crew. Duke relished in the response he got, and he requested another song to be played. “Stop! You are taking the singer’s job!” Jacob commented. Duke snorted, and the microphone picked it up.“You are just jealous because you don’t know anything about singing.” Duke’s retort and the way he made a jab at Jacob’s atrocious singing turned all of us laughing our hearts out. Tears pooled in Katherine’s eyes, which made Erin worry.“Mommy, why are you crying? Does it hurt anymore?” She asked. Concern and alarm mingled in Erin's eyes. A distinct feeling of tenderness assailed me, seeing how our daughter reacted when she thought her mom was hurting. Their mother-and-daughter bond was amazing to watch. Erin jumped from my l
Lucas POVThe remaining part of the interview was such a huge success that I decided to celebrate with the whole team after we wrapped up.We went to the Smith Hotel for the celebration. Coincidentally, my friends were also there. I invited them, too. The tables were filled with good food and wine. There was a smile on everyone’s faces.Erin sat on the table with us, looking prim and proper like her mother. The impish child earlier was a mere fraction of the refined girl she was now, dressed in a pink princess dress. She looked at us, mimicking the way her mother and I interacted with our guests. Then, her eyes lit up when she saw her third favorite person on the planet. “Uncle Ollie!” The refined act was abandoned, replaced by an excited child who pushed herself up to her seat and raised her arms to give her Uncle Oliver a hug. Oliver’s eyes lit up when he saw. He bent down to scoop her up in his arms and whirled her around.Erin’s giggles shattered the chatter mingled with t
