Katherine POV

“Mommy.” I woke up to a faint voice and a nudge on my arm.

“Erin.” My hands went to my face to rub it before standing up to lean over my daughter.

Erin tried to sit up, but I was quick to assist her.

“Careful, honey. The doctor said not to overexert yourself.” I reminded her, smoothing the top of her head before tucking the loose strands of her long, glossy black hair to the back of her ear.

Erin’s small hands stalled my movement when her fingers glided to my face and under my eyes, where I was sure bags could be seen.

“The nurse broke her promise. I told her to hold your hand so you wouldn’t be sad.”

I bit my lip because a sob threatened to slip past them.

“Hush, honey.  She was there.”

“You still cried.” Erin looked sad, making me quickly shake my head in response.

“I am not. I just did not have enough sleep.  Doctors and nurses kept coming and going through the night to check on you.”

It was the truth.

During the operation, Erin’s heart stopped beating for a while. The medical team thought that they lost her, but my daughter was a fighter. And now, she was here, awake and worried about me.

“Stop worrying about mommy, okay, and concentrate on yourself.” I was telling her when the door burst open in time for Erin’s eyes to instantly light up when her gaze shifted to the direction of the door.

“Aunt Noreen!” She cried excitedly.

My body stiffened at the mention of the traitor.

Slowly, I pulled my gaze from my daughter to watch Noreen glide through the floor, arms laden with decorative balloons and a teddy bear for my little girl.

Erin happily received the gifts, and while she was busy, I took the time to confront Noreen.

“What are you doing here?”

Noreen’s expression shifted.

“Greg’s outside. He wanted to talk to you.” My heart started to beat fast at the mention of my ex-husband.

I knew what this was all about. Greg wanted the repayment for his money since I failed to deliver on our agreement.  Lucas Sanders fired him.

My lips pursed.

The s*umbag did not even bother to see his daughter. Even if he was not Erin’s biological father, he was still the only father she had known.

I grabbed my bag, pulled out the check Oliver Mans gave me yesterday, and marched out of Erin’s room.

I had already prepared for this eventuality, but the indifference in his expression still rankled - not for me, but for our daughter.

“Where’s my money?” He asked the moment he saw me.

He did not even ask about Erin. “Our daughter almost died yesterday, and all you care about is your money?” I asked bitterly.

For a split second, Greg looked startled before his expression became cruel.

“Stop saying that she was my daughter when we both know she was not.  Now, where’s my money?” He bit out harshly.

Angrily, I shoved the rectangular paper in the middle of his chest.  Greg stepped back at the unexpected attack. His hand held to the wall for balance while the other pressed on the check to secure it to his chest.

He peeled the check off his chest to inspect, and after a while, he looked at me with malice in his eyes.

“I see that you did not waste time.”

My eyes narrowed at the implied insult.

“And what do you mean?”

Greg glared at me.  “Stop acting, Katherine. We both know you are a con artist - pretending to  be innocent and pitiable so men would scramble to give you their money.” The tone of his voice suggests his distaste.

“Don’t twist what happened five years ago to make you look like the aggrieved party in our situation, Greg.  You asked me to marry you. I did not force you, Greg.”

Greg’s mouth thinned.  “Yes, and I regretted everything.  Who did you scam this time? I bet he was a wealthy man.” He commented.  His voice was filled with contempt.

My eyes narrowed into slits when confronted by Greg’s insults, and the last iota of my restraint snapped.

“Get lost, Greg. I don’t need your insults here.”

Greg looked stunned before his face tightened in anger. He roughly grabbed my arm to grip it tight.

“Not before you tell me who gave you the money!” He hissed.

I was about to shout it to his face when someone butted in.

“I did. I gave Katherine the money.”

Greg and I both turned our heads in the direction of the speaker and saw Lucas Sanders striding toward us in anger.

I gasped at his unexpected appearance, but couldn't seem to pull my eyes away from him.

He stopped beside me and pulled me toward him.  “Now, does that satisfy your curiosity, Mr. Combs?” Lucas Sanders asked in a challenge.

Greg, on the other hand, looked like he could not believe what Lucas said. His eyes went back and forth between Lucas and me, eyes burning in rage as if he realized something.

  • Goodbye Jerk, Hello Mr. Perfect?   Chapter 212. Epilogue

Katherine POV"How do I love thee?" I said quoting from the famous poem of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It was high school literature when I was first introduced to the poem, but it was only now that I fully comprehended its meaning.I can enumerate the many ways I love Lucas Sanders. But that would take us to a lifetime and beyond and would be unfitting for this setting. Besides, Lucas is already crying buckets. He'll be dehydrated if I prolong this moment, I thought cheekily to myself. I looked at the priest solemnizing our vows. He gave a slight nod in my direction, prompting me to continue."I was sixteen when I first met you. I thought at that age, I don't know anything about love and sacrifices but you proved me wrong.""Too many people conspired to break us apart. But time and again, we proved them wrong. We even defied circumstances and emerged victorious in our love.”Tears began to stream down my cheeks. I wouldn't have noticed my tears if Lucas had not stepped forward to

Katherine POVWhen we got out of the police station with our clasped hands, Lucas stopped and stared at the clouds above. He was breathing fast, but after a few moments, his breathing became regular. “Let’s go home.” He told me, squeezing my hand. I nodded. “Yes.”At last, we are free. The following days were blurry. The media had a field day when they learned about Janine and Agatha’s plans. How they had plotted to destroy Lucas and me. An arraignment for Janine and Agatha was set. When the day came, Janine entered a not-guilty plea. Until now, she did not own up to her mistakes and was not remorseful. Our lives went on. Because it was a controversial case involving not only Lucas but a top-notch model like Agatha Richards, it caused bedlam in our lives for months.Lucas’s friends became our source of strength. Each one helped Lucas in his bid to achieve justice for our family, and in the end, the court ruled in our favor. Janine and Agatha will serve time in jail. The eviden

  • Goodbye Jerk, Hello Mr. Perfect?   Chapter 210. Hold Accountable

Katherine POVThe traffic was surprisingly light and we arrived at the police station within thirty minutes. I figured it would not take us long to confront Janine Sanders for weaving a fantastical tale about Lucas and me, and we would be back after Erin’s nap. When Lucas took my hand after we alighted from the car, his hand shook. I knew the toll this was taking him and squeezed his hand. Lucas's lawyer friend, Duke, was already waiting for us when we arrived.“You are in for a surprise.” He told us enigmatically, shaking his head. I did not bother making heads and tails of his statement because I was busy following him navigate his way inside the police station. He escorted us to a maze of narrow hallways until we arrived at a receiving area reserved for visitors. My eyes widened in shock when I saw that Janine had another visitor. She came in earlier than us. “Agatha.” Duke snickered when I uttered her name. When she heard her name called, Agatha whipped her head around. Ins

  • Goodbye Jerk, Hello Mr. Perfect?   Chapter 209. Call Her Out for Her Lies

Katherine POVI felt Lucas heaved a huge sigh before his body wracked with tremors. His shoulders were shaking, and I felt hot tears fall, scalding my skin. Compassion for this man filled me.He was now at his lowest, and as his wife, I needed to be there for him - be the source of quiet strength. “Lucas, get a grip of yourself. Erin is watching.” I reminded him because I did not want our daughter to be scared at seeing him on his weakened state. He seemed to collect himself after that. He took deep, successive breaths, and when he pulled back, he looked better than the wreck of the man who held me like he did not want to let me go.“That’s better.” I murmured for his benefit, eyes shining because he was trying or me and our family.I lifted my hand to brush a wayward hair off his forehead and smiled wanly at him. The heaviness of Janine’s disclosure was a shadow that weighed heavily on our shoulders.I, on the other hand, refused to be beaten by it. This is just another challeng

  • Goodbye Jerk, Hello Mr. Perfect?   Chapter 208. I Will Always be Here

Katherine POVI saw the devastation in Lucas’ eyes and thought. How can a mother think about destroying her son’s mental health just to spite him?I know that whatever comes to her mouth is a lie.My father was an honorable man. He wouldn’t betray us like that.He loves me and my mother so much to betray our trust. Sadly, he can't deny Janine's claim because a dead man cannot talk to defend himself.Janine Sanders is a sick person. Even when we were young, I saw her need to control Lucas. That was why she was mean to me.She hated me for her son.Now came this last straw. I saw how the news broke my husband’s heart, but I wouldn’t let anything or anyone come between us. Not now.Automatically, my hand stroked my still-flat belly as thoughts raged in my head.Lucas moved heaven and earth just to have it. It was time for me to return the favor.
