Chapter 7

Author: Summer Watermelon
Lex was left gaping at Tony in panic and disbelief. "Your man…?"

The Carters were one of Riverton's three giants and held a significant position in the east coast, and they stood among the top five in the nation's pharmaceutical business!

The Fishers were no more than insects before them.

On the other hand, Kate was staring at Ingrid as she hugged Tony's arm, feeling a sense of deja vu.

After all, she used to do the same with Tony, and she felt a pang of jealousy in turn.

"Tony… You're with her…?" Kate asked before she knew it.

Ingrid giggled and leaned her cheek against Tony's shoulder. "I'm Tony's girlfriend now… Why, I should thank you, Ms. Willow."

"Thank me?" Kate asked, at a loss.

"Yes!" Ingrid winked at her. "Thank you for dumping such a fine man and giving me a chance."

"I…" Kate flushed.

Truly, all it took was just a spark to send jealousy flaring!

"So you were cheating on me all along, Tony!"

Kate huffed as she came to her senses and hugged Lex's arm in turn, both to brag and to provoke. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder—if you think Tony's good, then think whatever you like! It's just like how I believe Lex is the best!"

"Really? Guess you're quite the poor judge of character, Ms. Willow!"

As she finished, Ingrid turned toward Lex with a threatening glare. "So, you're threatening my boy? Were you going to hurt him with that bat?"

Thud!

Lex flinched and dropped the baseball bat audibly, while Ingrid walked up and picked it up. "And did you think that I'll just let it slide?"

"N-No, please… It's just a misunderstanding…" Lex stammered, shaking his head repeatedly.

"You people say that everytime!" Ingrid bellowed.

Bang!

With one almighty swing, Ingrid left a deep dent on the hood of the Range Rover.

Still, it did not seem to hurt Lex—he was more worried that Ingrid would swing it on his head instead.

Smiling apologetically, he kept explaining, "Please calm down, Ms. Carter—I wouldn't have been rude to Tony if I'd known he's your boyfriend, don't you think? Can't you look the other way?"

Ingrid simply laughed at his face. "Who do you think you are, asking me to look the other way? Either Tony gets his satisfaction, or the Fishers can pack up and leave Riverton tomorrow!"

"Wait, what?"

Lex was left gaping, as it was really that easy for the Carters to destroy his family. "Please, Ms. Carter! Be the bigger person here… I've even sent the Venerable Healer Roch Jarek to treat your grandfather… Tony, I've made a mistake… Please don't take it to heart…"

Ingrid snorted coolly. "Actually, thank you for reminding me. That quack doctor you sent almost murdered my grandfather, and I still haven't punished you for that. And now, you tried to run your car into Tony and assault him? What, did you think my family is scared of yours?"

"My bad… My bad…" Lex dropped to his knees right then, bowing repeatedly in apology.

Still, just seeing Lex bending himself backward left Kate infuriated.

Stepping in front of him, she held Ingrid's gaze as she spoke evenly, "Please don't go too far, Ms. Carter. We respect you, and even tolerate you to partner with Carterbond Inc. However, you don't get to abuse that fact over personal reasons! We're partners, not beggars!"

"Oh, so you have a spine!"

Ingrid held a thumbs-up at Kate, but her tone soon changed sharply. "That said, I'm not sure if Mr. Fisher shares your audacity. Is he willing to bet his family's future on this?"

Just hearing that sent Lex jumping to his feet, pulling Kate behind himself and immediately lecturing her, "Shut up! How could you talk to Ms. Carter like that?"

When he turned back to Ingrid, he was at once fawning, bowing and apologizing. "Haha… It's a misunderstanding, an honest mistake! Please, just calm down…"

While Kate was left feeling completely disenchanted by Lex's behavior, Tony suddenly spoke, "That's far enough, Ms. Carter."

Then, giving Kate a long look, he turned to leave.

Ingrid snorted in turn. "Hmph. You're lucky Tony's too magnanimous to be petty with the likes of you. But this isn't over yet—remember, your father Andrew Fisher must attend the medical forum tomorrow and apologize to me as well as Tony, or I'll destroy your entire family!"

Tony paused when heard the name Andrew Fisher, while Ingrid pressed sternly, "You hear me?!"

Lex was nodding repeatedly as he answered, "Yes, yes, I'll definitely make sure to pass your message…"

-

Later, after Ingrid and Tony got into her Porsche, she asked, "How did I do?"

"How did you do?" Tony chuckled. "If by that, you mean putting up an act to help me get one back, I thank you for your kindness."

"Now, now. I might really fall for you in the process." Ingrid smiled at him, not hiding her interest.

Still, she was really not Tony's priority.

Instead, he asked, "By the way, the mayor must have told you that I'm looking into Andrew Fisher. Did you ask to see him to create an opening for me?"

"Not exactly," Ingrid replied, shrugging. "The man is actually tight-lipped, and I just chanced upon the information. Still, it's only natural that I want to help you since I owe you one."

"Does that mean you really consider yourself mine too?" Tony joked.

Ingrid simply nodded. "I'm serious about liking you. You have the looks, you're a great healer, and you're smart. A man like you is the best partner a woman like me can ask for."

Tony pursed his lips, not quite used to Ingrid's charms.

However, there was no question that the medical forum tomorrow was the perfect opportunity to investigate Andrew.

"Well, I'll be at the forum on time. Thanks for the help!" he told Ingrid.

Ingrid smiled wryly. "Please don't be so formal with me…"

-

Meanwhile, Lex and Kate were still scowling as they stood outside the hospital, with Lex ranting, "That prick! I didn't expect him to suck up to Ingrid Carter this soon… And that bitch is way out of line! If I wasn't being cautious about the big picture, I wouldn't have let her walk all over me!"

Kate was almost rolling her eyes—Lex's spineless reaction earlier had already left her thoroughly disappointed. "Tony isn't like that…"

Beneath the street lights outside the exhibition hall, Tony and Ingrid's shadows were especially elongated, even as Ingrid kept complaining, "Are you crazy?! I told you not to help her, even if she did collapse! What if she dies and her family blames us?""I'm a healer," Tony replied flatly. "Oh, a healer!" Ingrid pouted, jealousy swelling inside. "Suddenly the Hippocratic Oath makes sense to you, huh? Or weren't you the one who negotiated a deal with me just to save my grandfather's life?"Tony was left embarrassed—he had pretty much just shot himself in the foot.Still, he shrugged and said, "I'll demand payment from the woman's son once she's better. My consultation fees are especially expensive, after all."Ingrid snorted and rolled her eyes at him, not bothered to expose the bare-faced lie—how would he go looking for them when he did not even know their names? After a simple dinner at the first restaurant they found, Tony escorted her back to the exhibition hall since the m

The middle-aged man kept bellowing, "Just shut up already! Even if my mother is sick, who does that brat think he is, applying acupuncture on my mom?! Mark my words—if anything bad happens to my mom, you'll both die with her!"That was when Tony finally looked up and bellowed, "Shut up, unless you really want your own mother dead!"The middle-aged flinched in surprise, but his pudgy wife shoved Ingrid away with her weight while pointing a pudgy finger at Tony. "Shut up, quack doctor! Don't think you get to run away just because you can put up a show—if anything happens to my mother-in-law, you're fucked!"Hell, you're still fucked even if you save her! There's no way you'd be a good doctor for no reason—you must've knocked her down in the first place!"She and her husband had always believed the elderly woman to be healthy despite being eighty, even bringing her over to celebrate her grandson's birthday with them.Ingrid finally had enough and snapped, "You stop hollering your cr

Tony's punch had not even reached Andrew's face when he screamed, "No!!! Help!!!"He fell backward along with his chair, almost wetting himself as he lay on the floor. His lips were trembling and his face pale even as he stared at Tony, traumatized and silent.Hearing the racket, Lex rushed inside to find Tony standing on the top of the table, while his father was gone!"What did you do?!" he bellowed right then.Andrew quickly gasped, "Lex, I'm right here…""Dad!" Lex's heart skipped a beat, and he glared furiously at Tony as he bellowed, "I'll kill you!"However, Tony did not waste time and leaped, kicking Lex squarely in the chest and launching him into the wall.He was left hacking violently and gasping for air while clutching his chest, struggling to catch his breath while fear showed in his eyes.Tony then turned back to Andrew and growled threateningly, "You have three days. Think about who you were when you came for my family."With that, he leaped off the table and tu

Andrew did a double take.He had caught wind of the ginseng incident earlier but had not been present to see how Tony identified it to be a fake, or when Leon personally greeted Tony. Moreover, while there was no doubt that Andrew had been doing well thanks to the Carters' grace, rumor had it that Gavin Carter was terminally ill, while Ingrid had been making enemies everywhere, even removing the Willows from their list of partners. He was not one who would stay on a hill and die there—not when he still had a master plan in mind.As such, while the Carters were putting out flames everywhere, he approached the Boltons in secret…"Tony Quill, was it?" Andrew snorted, reclining against his chair and suddenly not fawning all over his guests.Ingrid frowned in displeasure right then, but Tony did not take offense as he had been watching the man much earlier. If Ingrid had not brought him along for this meeting, he would be visiting Andrew very late at his place instead…He then asked

Later, Warren found himself sitting alone in the second-floor VIP room of the exhibit hall, his hands shaking. Eventually, he sprang to his feet and launched a champagne against the wall, shattering it into pieces."Tony Quill!!! Argh!!!" he bellowed, his expression contorted in fury.He had not just been thoroughly humiliated—he had lost over a hundred million too. In fact, that was only thanks to Claude reasoning with Tony for leniency, so that he just had to pay him twice the ginseng's actual value. But he was supposed to make a fortune from auctioning the thousand-year-old ginseng in the first place! He had definitely lost more than what he bargained for!"Forrest!" he yelled at the door.Soon, a man with a cold visage entered. "Sir.""I want Tony Quill dead! I don't care how much it costs—I want him dead!"-Meanwhile, the auction proceeded as planned.Eventually, it proved to be a successful charity event and another feather in the cap for the medical association—that

However, both Paul and Claude were shocked. The Apocryphal Herbal Anthology was not a famous work, nor was it some ancient text. However, it had since been banned, and only the more learned healers would know of its existence. It did not stop Mr. Stevenson from laughing out loud, however. "So it's a banned book. What's the big deal?""And do you know why it was banned?" Tony shot back.Mr. Stevenson was left stumped as he honestly did not know.Flushed, he turned toward Claude, who rolled his eyes.It was Paul who smiled and answered, "I have heard of the book myself but never had the pleasure of actually reading it. But my predecessors had mentioned something about exploiting the contents—""Precisely." Tony nodded. "Everything on how ginsengs are appraised is written in there."Warren snorted in disdain. "Talk all you want—it's been banned, and no one's even read it! What excuse are you even trying to come up with here?""Exactly. It's not an excuse at all!" someone in the
