Leon’s POV.

My day blurred into a string of much-needed distractions. Contracts. Reports. Stacks of paperwork Ezra had organized neatly across my desk. I should have gone through them with my usual effort, but my eyes slid across the words without taking them in. My focus wasn’t here, no matter how much I forced it.

The phone call earlier had shaken something loose inside me. Franchesca.

Even the thought of her name pressed against my chest like a weight I’d buried years ago. I hadn’t expected to hear from her ever again.

Nor had I wanted to.

I told myself that chapter was closed, yet the sound of her voice had been enough to rip open a scar I’d worked hard to keep sealed.

I didn’t tell Scarlett. I wouldn’t. It wasn’t her burden to carry, and it sure as hell wasn’t her problem. She had enough to worry about without my ghosts.

I picked up a pen, signed my name to a document without even reading it, then tossed the folder aside. My hand tightened around the pen until it cracked. The sil

Scarlett’s POV.The garden was silent except for the faint rustle of leaves in the breeze. Franchesca stood a few steps ahead of me, her posture rigid but her head tilted downward as if she were lost in some private misery. A soft, pitiful whimper escaped her lips. Her fingers toyed with the edge of her dress, and she sniffled as though she were overcome by emotion.I stopped on the stone path, unimpressed. “You dragged me out here to cry at the bushes?” My voice was sharper than I intended, but I had little patience left for her games. Her shoulders shook delicately, a show for my benefit. She didn’t even bother wiping her eyes until I cleared my throat. Then she dabbed at the corner of her lashes with her finger, too slow and deliberate to be natural.“You don’t understand,” she spoke in a trembling tone.“No,” I shot back, arms crossing over my chest. “What I don’t understand is why you keep cornering me like this. Do you get some kind of thrill out of it? You said you wanted to ta

Scarlett’s POV.The call came mid-morning, catching me off guard before the day had even settled. Helena’s voice came across the line, brisk and a little tight, as if she had rehearsed what to say.“Scarlett,” she said, “it’s Helena. Do you remember me? We had dinner a few months ago, after you… handled Caden at the office.”I remembered her well. Calm, efficient, polite. A woman who had spent years watching Caden from close proximity, who knew exactly what kind of man he was.“Yes,” I answered. “Of course I remember you.”“I need to see you,” Helena pressed. “It’s urgent. Could you come for coffee? Cake, if you’d like. There’s a place in the city. Today, if possible.”The urgency in her tone tugged at me. “Today?”“Yes. It’s important.”Something inside me stirred uneasily. Still, I said, “Alright. I’ll make the time.”By the time I hung up, my pulse was unsteady. Helena had been loyal to Caden for years, but she hadn’t struck me as malicious. If she wanted to speak to me urgently, I

Leon’s POV.I closed the door behind me after leaving Scarlett’s room, the feeling of the folder still heavy in my hand even though I had already handed it to her.The decision had been made hours ago, long before I knocked on her door, yet my chest still carried an unsteady weight. The contract hadn’t been drafted lightly. I’d gone over it line by line with my lawyers, not because I doubted its legality, but because every clause carried a part of me I wasn’t used to offering.I wanted her to have two of my properties, fifty million in liquid assets—with several other benefits and protections most women would fight for. I had laid it out as plainly as I could, ensuring Scarlett would never have to worry about anything ever again. What she did with it was her choice. Whether she wanted to keep it, sell it, hand it down to our children… I didn’t care.I wanted her to have something that was hers to do with what she wished.Still, leaving her room, my heart had raced harder than it shoul

Scarlett’s POV.I stirred awake to the faint clink of china. For a moment, I thought I was still dreaming. The soft scent of buttered toast, warm eggs, and something sweet drifted toward me, making my stomach growl before my eyes were even open. When I blinked the sleep away, the sight made me freeze.A tray sat across my lap, perfectly arranged with breakfast. A cup of tea released a gentle stream of steam, a glass of fresh juice glowed orange in the early morning light, and beside it all was Leon.He stood there in his usual composed way, hands tucked behind his back, as if this wasn’t strange at all.“Leon?” I sat up quickly, my hair falling across my face. “What is this? Did I oversleep? I—”“No, you didn’t,” there was a slight upward quirk to his lips as he said it. The added, “Just thought to bring you breakfast.” Despite the obvious slight twinkle in his eyes, he kept his tone even, almost detached, as if he was keeping a secret and didn’t want to tell me about it.I blinked a

Leon’s POV.The paramedics finally backed away, declaring Scarlett stable and unharmed—minus a few scratches here and there. I stayed where I was, close enough that I could catch her if she might not be as fine as they claimed and possibly lose her footing, keeping a close eye on every movement she made.Their words did nothing to ease the knot in my chest. She sat on the edge of the stretcher, pale under the flashing lights, her voice steady but too soft. They ticked boxes on a clipboard, assuring me she was fine.I didn’t believe them. When the last EMT began packing his bag, Scarlett tugged on my sleeve. Her voice was quiet, meant for me alone. “I saw someone,” she said, her eyes sharp with unease. “There was a man in a hoodie. He ran from the car right before we left the mall.”My gaze hardened, not liking one bit what I was hearing. “You’re certain?”Her nod was firm. “I’m sure.”The driver moved closer, his expression grim. “I noticed him too, Mr. Rosenthal. He went straight fro

Scarlett’s POV.That morning, the atmosphere in the mansion had shifted. The staff went about their duties as usual, but their behavior toward me wasn’t the same. Whispers cut off the second I stepped into a room. Averted gazes replaced the usual nods and polite smiles. Where I had once felt acknowledged, I now felt deliberately ignored. At first, I told myself it was my imagination. But when even the maid who usually left fresh flowers in the dining room hurried past me without so much as a glance, the truth pressed down harder. I wasn’t imagining it. Something had shifted. In the hallway, I finally pulled aside one of the few I trusted, the maid who had once dared to slip prune juice into Franchesca’s tea and laugh about it with me. Her face paled when I asked her why everyone was acting strange. She hesitated at first, then whispered, “It’s Franchesca, Miss Scarlett. She’s been threatening the others. She told them that if they don’t keep their distance from you, she’ll have them f
