Chapter 3

Author: Faye Murrow
Selena had heard stories before that the men in this circle had no limits and did all sorts of disgusting things when it came to women. Back then, she had been grateful that Jonathan wasn't like that. Those sleazy men had nothing to do with her, and she hadn't cared.

But now, seeing them standing right in front of her and watching their faces, Selena felt a wave of nausea rise in her.

She had no intention of speaking to any of them.

Selena turned to leave, but two burly men blocked her path before she could reach the door.

Laughter echoed from behind her.

Ronald stepped closer, closing the distance with a predatory smile that left no room for doubt.

"Selena, back when Jonathan was around, I held back for his sake. But now? No one can stop me from having you. You know me. Once I set my mind on something, I never give up."

Selena's delicate face drained of color.

She remembered Ronald's obsessive behavior before Jonathan came into her life. It had terrified her, and even calling the police hadn't helped. Had Jonathan not appeared, she might have been forced into Ronald's possession.

Now that they were divorced, even Jonathan's protection wouldn't last long.

Selena's slender fingers curled tightly into fists. She forced herself to speak with a calm, detached tone.

"Mr. Lewis, you're already married. I know Mrs. Lewis as well."

Ronald sneered. "So what? I've got plenty of women. When has she ever mattered? Selena, stop resisting. If it's not me, it'll be someone else. Do you really think you can lead a quiet life in Harbor City with a face like that?"

Ronald's threat did make Selena flinch, just a little. But right now, she didn't want to think.

She just wanted to get out.

In front of her were the blocking bodyguards. Behind her, these disgusting men were circling, their eyes gleaming like predators taunting their prey. It felt like escape was impossible.

And they were laughing, taunting her even further.

"I can see that we can't beat Mr. Lewis. He's a damn freak. When he goes crazy, he's not even human."

Someone laughed. "Ronald, remember not to get carried away back there. We don't want things to get messy before it's fun for us."

Ronald chuckled and leered at Selena. "Don't worry. I'll be gentle...for now."

"Look at his face. He must be holding back real hard, huh?"

Selena couldn't stand it any longer, and snapped at the men guarding the door. "Move! This is illegal detention! I'm calling the police!"

The two men didn't budge. Ronald dragged over a chair and plopped down, crossing his legs, his gaze burning into Selena's back.

Selena gritted her teeth and called the police, but they didn't even flinch. She knew they were arrogant, brazen, and completely unafraid. Maybe they wouldn't do anything today, but what about tomorrow? The thought made her stomach churn.

Just then, the elevator doors slid open, and several sharply dressed men stepped out.

Selena's eyes immediately brightened.

"Mr. Foster!"

Her voice carried a spark of excitement, almost like the flutter of seeing someone she secretly adored.

Zachary Foster looked up. His deep, dark eyes were unreadable, revealing nothing, and beneath his stern expression, there wasn't a ripple of emotion to be seen.

Selena was flustered and desperate, and she let a hint of playfulness slip into her voice.

"Did you come for me, Mr. Foster? It's these people's fault. They've been deliberately blocking me, making it impossible to leave. You have to tell them to let me go!"

Zachary studied the woman in front of him. Her features were exquisitely sculpted, striking from every angle. Even in a simple white blouse and black skirt, she carried herself with a straight posture and graceful curves that drew the eye.

But her bright, expressive eyes now held a trace of pleading, shimmering with a touch of vulnerability that made her look both pitiful and endearing.

Ronald rose and moved toward the door, finally noticing Zachary. His eyes flicked over Selena and Zachary with a mix of curiosity and suspicion. Darkness clouded his gaze, but he dared not be reckless.

When he spoke to Zachary, his tone was restrained, though tinged with a hint of probing.

"Mr. Foster, do you know Ms. Jones?"

Selena's fingers trembled slightly, and she pressed her perfectly red lips together.

Then Zachary's deep, clear voice cut through the tension.

"Selena, come here."

Selena seemed to come alive all at once. She stepped forward with courage, every move confident and proud, and the two bodyguards at the door didn't stop her.

Her steps were quick, urgent, until she reached Zachary's side. Her posture relaxed a little, and her bright eyes softened, her lips curving into a faint, reserved smile.

"We can go now, Mr. Foster."

The tall, handsome man glanced down at Selena before turning and stepping back into the elevator. Selena hurried to follow him, while the two others trailing Zachary stayed silent, wordlessly descending with them.

As the elevator doors closed, the atmosphere became awkward. Selena hesitated, unsure what to say, but the ride to the first floor passed quickly.

As they stepped out together, Selena felt a little embarrassed and quickly spoke up.

"Mr. Foster, thank you so much just now. I really had no choice and needed your help, but I promise I won't cause you trouble. I'll remember this today. If there's ever a chance, I'll repay your kindness."

Selena had met Zachary because of a visit to Juliet's school, where she got to know Juliet's close friend, Leona Foster, who happened to be Zachary's niece. They had only crossed paths once before, when Zachary picked up Leona from school.

It had been a brief encounter; they hadn't even exchanged greetings, just a quick glance from afar.

In the rush of the moment just now, Selena had been holding her breath and not daring to hope. To her surprise, Zachary remembered her and even knew her name.

Zachary's expression remained unreadable, his deep eyes betraying nothing. He replied evenly, "You're welcome, Ms. Jones."

Then he addressed the man beside him. "William, take Ms. Jones home."

William Lowell nodded, but Selena said, "No, Mr. Foster, I can…"

"The people upstairs are still watching," Zachary interrupted.

Selena froze, her eyes flicking up to the third-floor picture window. There really was someone standing there. The figure was blurry, but she knew Ronald well enough to be certain he wouldn't just let this go.

Her chest tightened with unease, and she didn't resist anymore. Under Zachary's watchful eyes, she followed William to the car.

Before the car started moving, Selena rolled down the window, leaning out just enough to show her bright, cheerful face. She smiled warmly at Zachary.

"Goodbye, Mr. Foster."

Jonathan looked at Isabella."You can help me? You're Selena's best friend. What's in it for you?"Why would she turn on her friend to take his side? It didn't make sense to Jonathan. Unless… Isabella wanted something from him.Seeing the suspicion in his eyes, Isabella slowly leaned closer and brushed her fingertips against the back of his hand. Her voice trembled slightly with a hint of nervousness, and her eyes glimmered with soft charm."Actually, I've had feelings for you for a long time."Jonathan raised an eyebrow, but didn't move."It started even before Selena came into the picture."A faint, knowing smile tugged at Jonathan's lips."Really? Then why didn't you say something back then? If you had told me before Selena showed up, maybe things would've turned out differently."A blush spread across Isabella's cheeks. She looked shy, like a girl confessing her first crush."You were way out of my league back then, so I didn't have the confidence. Soon after, you star

Jonathan sat alone at the bar, drinking one glass after another. A few women came over trying to flirt, but he shooed them away.Normally, if he were in the mood, he might have taken one of them upstairs to blow off some steam. But tonight, he wasn't in the mood for anything. The anger from being played by Selena still burned in his chest, refusing to fade.In Jonathan's mind, Selena had always been a pretty but stupid woman. For years, he had kept her at home like a pampered pet, thinking she would just cook a little, shop for fun, and go to the spa. He never thought she had any real thoughts of her own.He figured her demand for a divorce was nothing more than a burst of emotion, some desperate measure driven by love and disappointment. But what he didn't expect was that Selena would actually go behind his back and take half of his assets.Sure, it was all under Juliet's name now, but it still felt like a huge loss to him."Mr. Campbell."A woman's voice came from behind him,

Jonathan's expression faltered for a moment, guilt flashing briefly in his eyes. But just as quickly, his anger returned, sharper and hotter."So you really still want a divorce?""I've wanted it all along."Selena met his gaze head-on, calm and unwavering. That flawless face of hers, which had seemed so gentle and tender just hours ago, now looked hateful to Jonathan. She was so sweet and soft during the day when she coaxed him into signing away nearly half his assets, but she was now cold and distant.Jonathan realized he had really underestimated her. He clenched his jaw, his anger spilling out. "Hah, well-played! You're really something else."Without another word, he got into his car in a huff and drove off.Selena's eyes lowered slightly. The night air was cool, the streetlights casting a shadow of her thin figure across the pavement. She looked lonely, yet somehow radiant. When Selena got home, her phone lit up with a video call from Juliet. She answered right away, w

Selena didn't respond to Jonathan. She turned her eyes toward the school gate and quickly spotted Juliet. A genuine smile warmed her face.Juliet instantly noticed her mother standing there, looking tall, graceful, and effortlessly beautiful. Even her gentle smile seemed to make everything around her feel lighter."Mom!"Juliet hurried over, her ponytail bouncing with every step. Her face glowed with joy as she threw herself into Selena's soft, familiar embrace.Selena looked at her daughter with affection, took the backpack from Juliet's hand, and passed it to Jonathan. "Is there anything you want to eat? Your dad and I are taking you out for dinner tonight."That was when Juliet finally noticed Jonathan. Her face instantly gave her away. After all, she was never one to hide how she felt. Her smile faded, and she puffed her cheeks slightly."I thought you were too busy."Her tone carried a touch of sarcasm.Selena shot Jonathan a sharp look, kind of like a silent warning. He

After wrapping things up at Campbell Enterprise, Harley returned to his law firm and gave Zachary a call."It's all taken care of. Everything went smoothly. Ms. Jones got exactly what she deserved.""Thanks."Harley raised a brow. "Funny, you're the one thanking me. Shouldn't Ms. Jones be the one saying that? Also, who's covering my legal fees, you or her?""I'll have William handle it.""So you're paying, huh? What are you to Ms. Jones, exactly?"Zachary stayed silent. Harley smirked, but didn't push it. Then, his tone turned playful."You know why things went so smoothly? Guess I underestimated Ms. Jones yesterday. She's not naive at all. Beauty can be a dangerous weapon, and she sure knows how to use it. The way she sweet-talked Jonathan into signing that deal was impressive, to say the least. Let me give you a friendly warning: watch yourself. That sweet smile of hers might end up turning on you next."He laughed. "Actually, judging by how eager you were to help her and

After Harley left, Selena glanced at Jonathan."You should get back to work. I'll wait for you outside Juliet's school this afternoon. Maybe we can take her out for dinner?"A flicker of joy crossed Jonathan's eyes. Seeing Selena speak so calmly and warmly, which was so different from her usual cold distance, he immediately thought she had finally softened."Alright," he said with a smile.Jonathan returned to his office, leaving only Selena and Isabella in the lounge.Selena's slender fingers wrapped around the cup on the table. She took a quiet sip before setting it down, her clear, calm eyes landing on Isabella."Isabella, do you remember how we first became friends?"Isabella's lips twitched slightly, but Selena continued before she could answer."We used to live in the same dorm. Everyone there was from different majors. I studied literature, and you were in law. At first, you weren't very friendly to me. Honestly, I even felt like you didn't like me. Later, things changed
