I sat on the edge of the bed, watching as the healer. A strange old woman with bizarre clothes and an even stranger smell approached. The scent was unmistakable, something like burnt carrots, lingering in the air.

I forced a smile, practicing a courtesy I’d only just learned, as she moved closer, the aroma nearly overwhelming my senses. Her hands were surprisingly firm as she poked and prodded at various parts of me, clearly baffled by whatever she was finding.
