Greyfen was the type of town you could drive through without slowing down if you didn’t already live there.

It had one main road that ran straight through the heart of everything, a diner that still used the same coffee pots from the nineties and never seemed to replace the cracked vinyl on the booths, a hardware store that smelled like sawdust and old rubber passed down generation to generation, and then the woods that took over on every side, thick and older than any of the people who lived among them.

The population sat just under eight hundred and had for as long as anyone could remember.

People were born here, got married here, buried their parents here, and rarely left for good. The ones who did leave almost always came back eventually, pulled by something inevitable in their lives.

Everyone knew the sound of everyone else’s engine. They knew who was behind on their bills, whose kid was failing math, whose marriages were falling apart and only survived by sheer tolerance, whose son had left the town and never called again.

They knew which houses left their porch lights on all night and which ones went dark early. In a place this small, there were very few true strangers.

Every Sunday the same faces filled the pews at St. Brigid’s. The church was plain white wood with a steeple that leaned a little, like it had grown tired of standing straight against the wind. The floorboards creaked in the same places they always had. The stained glass threw soft colored light across the same worn seats.

Father Marcus had only been the priest for six months, but he already knew every name in the parish. He used them on purpose while softly greeting his congregation at the door, and offering a personal word after Mass that made people feel noticed.

He remembered what was going on in everyone’s lives. who was sick, whose birthday was coming up, whose child’s birthday was coming up, who was getting married, who was getting divorced, who had just arrived into town, who had just died.

He always tried to ask and keep up with the town, listening and remembering, until it finally decided he was one of theirs.

They all sat under the same roof every week, passing the same collection basket, shaking each other’s hands as a sign of peace, and yet none of them had any idea what the others were doing once the church doors closed.

Behind closed doors, Greyfen was a different place entirely.

Desire lived in the silent spaces of people’s hearts they often neglected, until they couldn’t anymore. It waited in the lonely hours after dark, in the moments when the rest of the town was asleep or looking the other way.

People who smiled at each other over coffee on Monday morning carried secrets that would have torn the town apart if they ever saw daylight.

Some were taking what they needed because the alternative was too lonely to bear. Others were falling into something deeper and messier, far more dangerous than they had planned.

The same faces that filled the pews on Sunday were living entirely different lives the rest of the week. Lives full of heat and hunger and choices that could never be taken back.

They asked about work and weather and kids. But actually had no clue about each other.

In Greyfen, knowing someone and truly knowing them were two very different things.

And no one knew that better than the man who stood at the front of the church every Sunday, looking out at his congregation that trusted him completely, while the weight of his own secrets pressed harder against his ribs with every passing week.

Mara was alone in the house that weekend. Ben had left early for a plumbing job on the far side of town. The kids had vanished into the neighborhood almost the moment breakfast ended to hang out with their friends. She was sitting lazily on the couch watching TV and snacking on a bowl of chips in an old soft T-shirt and leggings when she heard the low rumble of an unfamiliar truck on the gravel of her driveway. She looked out the front window and felt her stomach drop.Julian’s truck. He parked at the curb as if he always belonged there and casually walked up to her front door, his stride confident.Mara’s mind fractured into three simultaneous reactions.Panic first: she didn’t feel sexy enough for this gorgeous, fine man to be looking at her right now. She looked like a… like a mom with her hair bundled into a very messy knot on top of her head. Then fury, sharp and immediate: What the fuck was he doing here in the middle of the day, in full view of every neighbor who might glance o

Julian and Mara had agreed, in the sticky aftermath of that first desperate afternoon, that they would do this only on Tuesdays, the day she came to clean. This boundary was set so that it wouldn’t bleed into the rest of their lives and ruin everything. They both knew it was a lie the moment the words left their mouths. That first Tuesday after they crossed the line, Mara left her house while the sky was still the deep blue of almost dawn. She’d left the kids sleeping. Ben was still snoring too.Her body had been restless all night, her cunt aching with the memory of how he’d filled her. She couldn’t wait another hour. She walked hurriedly up the trail, and when she reached the cabin, she unlocked it to find him exactly as she had so many mornings before. He was sprawled across the bed on his stomach, one arm flung out, the sheet tangled low around his hips. His cock lay soft against his thigh, thick even at rest, the dark head just visible. She stood there for a long minute as her br

The whole town knew about Lily by then. She was a waitress at the diner, barely an adult, evidently so by the way her body hadn’t yet settled into the soft edges of womanhood.Ben’s latest. The town whispered. Mara, as the wife of the serial town adulterer, was used by now to the pitiful glances she got over coffee cups, those snippy little muttered comments between the hardware store shelves about self respect or whatever. If she could, she would have left Ben long ago. But she couldn’t afford to take care of their kids and pay the mortgage on her own.She had grown teeth eventually. Along the way, so had her children.Cassie had come home one afternoon white faced, stood in the kitchen doorway, voice tight, and told Mara what had happened. She and her friends had been at the diner after school. They’d been collectively teasing Lily as she wiped down tables. It was just small, harmless banter meant to be funny. But she had snapped.

Julian Kane—now Wilson—had once been so famous that people flocked to him in the street just for a photo. He starred in leading roles, was on almost every magazine cover, and it was known that if he was on a show, it was bound to be a success. His PR team often paired him with rising female stars so that by association to him, they too would become famous. He was used to this. Until Nikki Chan. When they paired him with her for the public-stunt staged romance, he had accepted it with the same business mind he had the actresses before. The cameras loved them. The public ate it up. It was a success. But somewhere along the way, it stopped being pretend for him. He started to enjoy her as a human being. Then he fell hard. But she never did. When the arrangement ended she moved on to the next useful connection without loo

Mara Galton stood at the kitchen counter, spreading butter across a slice of toast, the knife scraping softly against the bread. The TV murmured low from the living room. Her children moved around her in the familiar morning chaos. Sixteen year old Cassie was already dressed, phone in hand, scrolling with the focused intensity of teenagers. Twelve year old Ethan still looked half asleep, rubbing his eyes with the heel of one hand and dragging his feet across the linoleum.“Shoes, Eth. The bus will be here in twenty minutes.”Ben, her husband, sat at the table over a bowl of cereal, shoulders hunched forward like he was trying to disappear into the wood grain. He didn’t look up when she set a plate of scrambled eggs beside him.“You heading to the Wilson place again?” he asked, voice flat, the words more a statement than a question.“Yep. It’s Tuesday.”“Waste of time. Man’s a goddamn ghost.”Mara kept her expression neutral. She poured coffee into Ben’s travel mug. “He pays the best

The side door opened as Lola slipped into the church that evening. She moved down the side aisle, eyes scanning the empty pews and the shadowed corners for anything out of place. The supervisor priest was only a couple of hours from arriving. She had come to make sure Marcus had everything ready. She found him near the altar, standing in the half dark with his hands resting on the marble edge. The moment he turned, she began signing.Everything in order? You ready?Marcus watched her hands. He signed back once, short and rough.Yes. All done. She signed again, slower this time, eyes searching his face.Is everything okay? Is there anything I can do to help?He shook his head. His own hands moved. No need. It’s finished. She started to sign something else, but the words never fully formed because Marcus closed the distance in three long strides, caught her by the waist, and pulled her hard against him. His mouth found hers at once open and hungry, tongue pushing in as if he had been
