Chapter 1

Penulis: HF Era
In the mirror, the words "Used Stud" were plastered across my face in bold letters.

The crowd around me jeered.

"Look at that, a used stud. Fits him perfectly."

"I heard he's a 30-year-old virgin. Total freak."

"Seriously, the nerve of this guy to even throw a wedding. Talk about shamelessness."

Just then, the door swung open, and my fiancee, Ariel Booker, walked in in her wedding dress.

My friend, Patrick Morris, sauntered over with a smirk. "Ms. Booker, your dress is a bit messed up."

With that, he reached out under the guise of fixing her tube top and slid his hand inside for a quick grope.

In my last life, seeing this had made my blood boil. I had rushed over and punched him in the face.

But Ariel had immediately grabbed a bottle of red wine from the table, smashed it over my head, and screamed at me, "Caleb Newman! Mr. Morris came all this way to do your makeup for free! He was just trying to break the ice. How could you be so petty and just hit him? Apologize to Mr. Morris on your knees right now, or the wedding is off!"

Back then, I remembered how she had stayed by my hospital bed for three days and nights when my stomach bled.

I remembered how she had done everything in her power to help treat Mom, who was in a vegetative state from a stroke.

Not wanting to ruin our wedding day, I had apologized to Patrick on the spot and begged Ariel to go through with the ceremony.

But this time around, I saw everything with perfect clarity.

When Patrick's hand slipped into her dress, she didn't flinch. Instead, she flushed as she looked at him.

Noticing my lack of reaction, Ariel suddenly looked guilty and pushed Patrick away. "Apologize to Caleb right now! Wipe that stamp off his face and redo his makeup!"

I grabbed a makeup wipe, cleaned the words off my face, and said quietly, "Don't bother. The wedding is off."

Ariel stared at me in disbelief.

I stripped off the custom suit she had ordered for me and headed for the door.

That seemed to snap her out of it. She grabbed my wrist, looking aggrieved. "Caleb! Stop throwing a fit! We've been planning this for so long! All our friends and family are out there. How can you call off the wedding over a harmless joke?"

I shook her hand off, ignoring the stares of the crowd, and looked at her with a mocking smile. "Ariel, you know exactly why we shouldn't get married. I'm not stopping you. Go be with the one you actually love. Isn't that what you want?"

I thought she would panic.

Instead, her expression didn't even waver. She just looked hurt. "Caleb, what are you talking about? Everyone knows you're the only one I love!"

She pointed at Patrick. "Is it because of him? I swear I didn't know he was going to pull a stunt like that. Besides, I made him apologize, didn't I? If you're still mad, I'll fire him. Will that make you happy?"

Patrick immediately teared up in a panic. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! Should I get down on my knees? Will that make it right?"

I just watched them, offering no reaction whatsoever.

Ariel's parents, Arthur Booker and Isabel West, walked over. Their voices were laced with disapproval.

"Ariel is already swallowing her pride for you. What more do you want?"

"Caleb, you should know how well Ariel treats you. She performed your mother's surgery and arranged her aftercare. Don't bite the hand that feeds you."

A sharp ache pierced my chest.

Three months later, the case went to trial.Patrick was convicted on multiple counts, including fraud, sexual assault, intentional injury, and forgery. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.Ariel was sentenced to eight years for intentional injury and false imprisonment. On the day of the sentencing, I sat in the gallery, watching the two of them being led out of the courtroom. As Ariel passed by my row, she suddenly stopped."Caleb."Her voice was barely a whisper, stripped of the biting malice she used to carry."Are you really the one who pulled me out of that fire?"I looked at her and gave a single nod.Tears immediately flooded her eyes."I am so sorry!" she choked out. "I was blinded by a lie for three years. I genuinely thought he was my savior. I thought he was the good guy and you were the monster. I did so many horrible things. I'm sorry. I failed you and your mother."I remained silent for a beat."Eight years," I said quietly. "Serve your time well. Start ove

Three days later, Mom woke up from her coma. The moment she opened her eyes and saw Grandpa, I expected her to coldly turn her head away like she used to.But she didn't.She just looked at him silently, tears streaming down her face. Her lips trembled as she choked out a single word, "Dad."Grandpa held her hand and wept like a child. As I watched them from the doorway of the ward, my nose stung with emotion.Mom's recovery was remarkably fast. The specialists called it a medical miracle.Perhaps it was because the medical care Grandpa provided was lightyears ahead of what she had before, or perhaps it was because her long-held resentment had finally dissolved.A week later, she was already well enough to sit up and talk. That afternoon, the sunlight streamed in warmly. Leaning against the headboard, she slowly began telling me stories she had never told me before."Your grandpa didn't object to my marriage because he was a snob," she said softly. "It was because he had run

"But he shouldn't have touched Mom," I said.Grandpa looked at me, a flicker of approval crossing his face."You're right," he said. "He shouldn't have. There's one more thing."Grandpa pulled out another document. "It's about Ariel."I looked up."Three years ago, Ariel was finishing her PhD at Seabrook Medical College. One night, while she was working late in the lab, a fire broke out. She was trapped on the fourth floor. A man rushed into the burning building and carried her out on his back."I blinked, stunned. "That man was Patrick?""No." Grandpa shook his head. "It was you."I was completely dumbfounded."You were at the medical college that night to pick up Rosie's prescription. When you saw the smoke, you ran straight into the fire. You managed to drag her out, but then you collapsed."By the time you both arrived at the hospital, severe smoke inhalation had caused you to suffer temporary amnesia. And Patrick happened to be on the scene."Grandpa's gaze turned frigi

The lights inside the military garrison's interrogation room were blindingly white.Ariel was handcuffed to a metal chair. Her hair was a disheveled mess, and her wedding dress was still damp with the pungent chemical stench of the decontamination room. Her lips were completely bloodless, and she shook uncontrollably. In the neighboring room, Patrick was so paralyzed with fear that he had already wet himself.Grandpa sat behind the one-way mirror with a thick stack of manila folders laid out on the table before him."Caleb, take a look at this."I took the file from him. The first page contained basic personal information.Patrick Morris. Male. 29 years old. Born in Seabrook. It was all very ordinary information, and I couldn't see anything out of place."Flip to the second page."I did, and my entire body froze. It was a DNA test report. Patrick and I shared the same biological father."How is this even possible?" My voice was cracked and raspy, and my hands began to tremb

I opened my eyes to see a face that was both familiar and unfamiliar. The man was in his late 60s, standing tall in a crisp military uniform. The sight of the general stars on his shoulders made my eyes sting. He stood in front of the meat grinder. With one hand, he slammed the power switch off. With the other, he grabbed the guard by the throat and tossed him ten feet away like a ragdoll.Ariel turned deathly pale. "Who the hell are you?"Ignoring her completely, the old man turned to look at me as I lay broken on the floor. His gaze, which was hardened and stern, instantly welled with tears the moment it landed on me."Caleb."He crouched beside me and cupped my face in his rough, calloused hands. His voice trembled as he said, "You look so much like your mother."My mind went completely blank. In my entire life, I never knew I had a grandfather.Mom never spoke about her side of the family. Whenever I asked, she would either fall completely silent or tell me they were all

Ariel looked at me, her eyes pooling with tears. "Caleb, the wedding is still on. We'll just tell everyone I was treating Patrick for a medical emergency. That way, our family's reputation will remain intact."I caught Patrick flashing me a smug grin. Then, I looked back at the glaring smear of red on Ariel's wedding dress, and my eyes stung with tears."And what if I refuse?"Fury instantly flashed across Ariel's face. "If you refuse, don't blame me for being heartless when I throw your mom out of the hospital!"Looking at this woman who now felt like a complete stranger, I couldn't help but ask, "I have never done anything to hurt you. Why are you doing this to me?"Ariel's voice turned ice-cold. "You haven't done anything to hurt me, but you ruined Patrick."I froze. She let out a sneer. "You pretended to be his best friend while systematically stealing 99 of his girlfriends. You even coached them on bedroom positions and filmed them. Don't you find yourself absolutely disgus
