Elira Ashwyn catches the faint glint of silver runes on the heavy steel cuff around Kaedrin Thornvale's wrist. The massive warrior leans down, his scent of bitter cedar and blood hitting her nostrils, and speaks in a low growl.

"This is just a stolen trophy from a rival rogue I slaughtered on the border," Kaedrin whispers, his hot breath brushing against the shell of her ear. "I wear it to look dangerous, but I didn't think a little female like you would spot it so quickly."

He unclasps the rune-cuff and shoves it into his leather belt pocket.

"It looked authentic," Elira mutters, stepping back as her ears burn with sudden heat.

Having this broad-shouldered warrior towering over her four-foot-five frame makes her heart thud against her ribs. She shakes her head to clear her mind. It makes sense that an outcast bloodline rogue would carry stolen gear from northern battles.

"The ceremony is over," Cerys Ashwyn sneers, strutting forward with her hands wrapped around Torric Blackthorn's thick arm. "Since you actually claimed this stray, let me formally introduce my mate. This is Torric Blackthorn, future Alpha heir of the Blackthorn pack. If your rogue needs work, Torric can offer him a spot cleaning out the war-hound kennels."

Torric keeps his head down, refusing to meet Elira's dark eyes as his jaw clenches in lingering regret.

"I appreciate your generous offer, sister," Elira replies, her voice dripping with venom. "Though I doubt Torric has time to manage kennels when he's busy switching females every full moon."

Cerys’s face turns pale with rage, her claws digging into Torric’s arm. "You insolent stray! He chose my high-blood womb over your worthless body!"

"I like my freedom outside the pack walls," Kaedrin cuts in, his voice calm and dismissive as he places a large hand on the small of Elira's back. "I have no desire to serve a weak Alpha."

Before Cerys can scream at them, Kaedrin guides Elira out of the pack sanctuary and down the icy mountain trail toward the outer territory borders.

They reach a small, weathered stone cabin tucked against the edge of the dark forest. It is cold, bare, and holds only the essential survival gear of a border scout.

"This is my lair," Kaedrin says, tossing his heavy fur cloak onto a wooden bench. "It's small, but it keeps the winter wind out."

"It's clean," Elira says, her voice steady as she looks around the sparse room. "It's enough for us."

She watches as Kaedrin unbuckles his leather chest armor. The thick muscles of his shoulders bulge under his dark tunic, scars crisscrossing his brown skin from years of feral combat.

Kaedrin turns, catching her staring. He takes three long strides across the stone floor, trapping her tiny body between his massive frame and the wooden doorframe.

"You've been trembling since we left the altar," Kaedrin growls softly, his grey eyes darkening as he stares down at her lush, full lips. "Are you afraid of sharing a bed with a rogue?"

"I don't know you," Elira says, her palms pressing against his hard chest to keep a fraction of space between them. "This mating was forced on both of us for pack debts."

Kaedrin lets out a low, rumbling chuckle that vibrates through her fingertips. "Don't worry, little stray. I'm not going to force my mark onto your neck. We can keep this union strictly business."

"What kind of business?" Elira asks, her breath catching as his scent suffocates her senses.

"You need protection and the silver for your nurse's healing," Kaedrin says, his eyes dropping to her chest before rising back to her face. "I need an Ashwyn female on paper to satisfy the Frostclaw elders so they leave me alone. We live our own lives. I hunt on the borders; you do whatever you want in the territory."

He leans closer, his broad hand coming up to gently cup her jaw, his thumb brushing over her dark, velvet skin.

"Though if your wolf ever gets lonely during the full moon," Kaedrin purrs, his voice dropping an octave into pure, possessive dirty talk, "I'd be more than happy to show you what a real Alpha knot feels like."

Elira's core twitches with a sharp, involuntary pulse of heat, her wetness immediately betraying her instincts. She grits her teeth against the surge of arousal.

"I don't need your knot," Elira snaps, her voice tight. "Just stick to the agreement."

Kaedrin's playful smirk fades, his expression turning deadly serious as his gaze drops to her flat stomach.

"One strict rule, Elira," he warns, his voice cold as steel. "We may be mates in name only, but if I ever find out you let another male lay his hands on you or carry his pup, I will slaughter him where he stands."

"I honor my blood vows," Elira answers firmly. "I am not like Cerys."

Kaedrin tilts his head, his sharp eyes searching her stoic face. "You're not Cerys Ashwyn, are you?"

Kaedrin stepped back, his massive chest heaving as my words hit him like a physical blow. His grey eyes burned with a dark, dangerous fury, his claws digging so hard into his palms that dark blood welled over his knuckles. I had personally ordered Dacian Wolfhart to handle the high-court ethics violation, pulling strings behind the scenes from my hidden throne in the central spire just to clear my mate’s name. Yet here she stood, believing that weak, low-ranking Garrison male was her savior."The Garrison bloodline is a minor clan with zero authority in the Ravenshade Moon Dominion," Kaedrin sneered, his low growl sending a vibration through the narrow stone walls of the alley. "Director Garrison does not have the power to influence executive council decisions. What makes you think the high courts reinstated your estate management license because of a weakling like him?"I tilted my head, looking up at his towering frame, my four-foot-five plush body feeling small yet defiant against

"Open this door, Elira!" Torric Blackthorn shouts again, his fist pounding against the thin wooden planks until the frame shakes. "I know you are in there with that dirty rogue! The pack elders sent me to bring you back to the Ashwyn clan!"My heart slams against my ribs, my dark skin growing cold as my wolf cowers inside me. I am a four-foot-five, plus-size outcast female, and the memory of Torric's cruel words at the pack boundary still burns my soul. He rejected my bloodline, called me an unmateable waste, and tried to force me into servitude for his high-ranking court allies."Stay behind me, little female," Kaedrin rumbles, his broad six-foot-four body shifting in front of mine like an impenetrable wall of raw muscle and dark territorial energy. His grey eyes glow a lethal, demonic gold in the dim hearth light, his claws extending with a terrifying click. "If he steps one foot across my threshold, I will rip his throat out and feed his heart to the border beasts.""No, Kaedrin, w

Vespera’s claws twitched as she shrank back, her yellow wolf eyes darting toward the executive council in pure terror."You made a subjective conjecture based on academy gossip," Dacian Wolfhart growled, his voice vibrating with lethal Beta authority across the oval table. "Because of your petty jealousy, you slandered an elite estate manager and almost cost the Ravenshade Moon Dominion a vital asset. You are completely unfit for the council. Vespera Hollowmere, your title is stripped, and you are banished from the dominion."The room fell into an icy, suffocating silence. All the color drained from Vespera's face as she dropped to her knees. "I am so sorry, Lord Wolfhart!" she whimpered, her hands trembling against the polished stone floor. "I know I was wrong! I have served the high courts for years. Please, I beg you, do not cast me into the outer borders! My wolf cannot survive without the pack bond!"Desperation choked her voice, but Dacian did not even blink behind his silver-ri

Elira Ashwyn pushes into the small kitchen, her small plush body tensing as she sees Kaedrin Thornvale standing awkwardly amidst shards of shattered clay pots.He raises his sharp grey eyes to her, looking lost and helpless. "I was scrubbing the grease when they... slipped right out of my hands."Well, a rough border male like him had not touched kitchen items in years, so a mess was inevitable.Elira crouches down, her short fingers carefully gathering the shattered pieces from the floor. She isn't sure whether to laugh or cry. "I am guessing you did not rinse them first. Clay pots need warm water and gentle soap.""I see. I will remember that next time," Kaedrin growls softly, ripping off a piece of dry linen to hand to her. "Move out of the way, little female. I'll pick up the rest so you don't cut your skin."He doesn't want her getting hurt because of his clumsy hands. It doesn't take long for Kaedrin to finish clearing the broken clay. When he steps out of the alcove wiping his

Elira Ashwyn shifts her weight on the hard wooden stool, her dark skin flushing with heat as the interview panel murmurs."Why would you hand her an exam meant for high-ranking estate managers with a decade of territory experience?" the second female interviewer asks, glaring at Vespera Hollowmere. She snatches up Elira's file from the desk, scanning her achievements. "Elira Ashwyn has top marks from the academy. She managed four border keeps before her graduation. We need someone who actually understands high-court logistics, Vespera. Do you have a personal vendetta against her?"Vespera bites her red-painted lip, her yellow eyes flashing with hidden malice. "Why would I care about a low-ranking stray?" She shrugs, pretending to look bored. "There were plenty of rumors about her back at the academy. She is not as pure as she acts. She spent her first year trying to lure high-beta males away from their mated pairs. I know her scent better than you do. She has a trash reputation, and o

Elira Ashwyn stands rigid on the snow-covered threshold of the Ashwyn pack lodge as cold wind bites at her dark skin. Lady Morwen steps out into the courtyard, her silver robes sweeping over the frost as she forces a sweet, frantic smile onto her face."Kaedrin, you must have misunderstood things in there," Lady Morwen says, her voice trembling slightly under his heavy shadow-aura. "I only scolded the girl out of motherly discipline. It meant nothing at all.""I am not interested in your pathetic lies," Kaedrin Thornvale says flatly, his grey eyes locked on the trembling older female. "Save your tongue for someone who cares."Fenros Greymane steps forward instantly, picking up the four heavy iron chests of rare crystals and runic gems without a word. He locks each steel latch with a heavy click, turning his back on the lodge."Take every token back to the carriage, Fenros," Kaedrin commands, his voice rumbling like deep thunder through the courtyard. "The Ashwyn clan does not deserve
