Chapter 1

Adira’s POV

“ADIRA!”

Ace threw the gun towards me as the chaos began at the funeral of my mother. Since all the visitors are assassins and part of the Mafia world, I didn't hear any of them scream because of fear from all the gunshot that began to fill the entire place.

I saw people leaving—those are the clans who didn't want to be involved. But then, it doesn't mean that I can trust them. I know why they came here. It is not to mourn with us, that would be hypocritical. They are here to watch and observe me, studying how I move so they could attack me soon.

I shot all the gangsters and assassins right in front of the altar. I didn't bother to move anymore because I could simply kill them without doing much effort.

I watched the dagger pass in front of my face, before I shifted my eyes to my left and saw a woman who threw that to me.

Vanessa Delfin, the heiress of their clan.

I saw how annoyance ran through her round eyes. This woman has been eyeing me and I knew that well. I was expecting them to attack us today.

“You're always reckless, Vanessa. How can an heiress be so brainless?” I shook my head disappointedly.

“You'll die today along with your mother, bi—”

Before she could even continue her useless words, I grabbed the dagger on my pocket and threw it in her direction, aiming for her neck.

Her lips parted, unable to speak, as the red fluid began to drip from her neck.

“Bull’s eye,” I mumbled.

“VANESSA!”

I pointed the gun at her brother’s head before he could even go near his sister.

“Aren't you happy that you will be the heir of Delfin now?” I wore my annoying smirk.

He was fuming mad. If I am not holding a gun right now, he would definitely kill me. But I will not let that happen. Death is not for me. Not until our clan comes back on top again. I would never leave my brother, Ace, with our clan in its weak condition.

“You’ll pay for this, Adira.” He said firmly as if he swore that to the moon.

At least we're both mourning now, right?

“You were the one who attacked us,” I reminded him.

“You didn't even respect the death of my mother,” rage could be felt from my voice.

These heartless monsters don't really choose a day to kill.

“Leave,” I ordered dominantly.

“We might be weak right now, Delfin. But you wouldn't want to see your blood invading this place,”

I saw how he gulped. He didn't step back immediately and I knew that he was thinking.

My people along with my brother stood beside me and pointed their guns at them. We totally outnumbered them.

“Get Vanessa’s body,” he commanded. Some of his men went to carry her body before they all turned his back to us, leaving the place that was already ruined.

“You got wounded,” Ace said.

My eyes landed on my arm and I saw it bleeding. I let out a chuckle because I didn't even notice it.

“I guess I'm numb,” I simply shook my head and ignored it.

“Buried her, then we go home.”

We took some time to give our mother a proper funeral regardless of what just happened. After that, we headed back to our home where I made sure that no intruders could even get in.

“Adira, we caught spies,” Louis, one of us, said.

I glanced at the three men who were already tortured with how they look right now.

“You know what to do,” I uttered. “Kill them.”

Once a traitor will always be a traitor. This is a Mafia world. There is no place for mercy in this kind of life.

My mother died because of an illness. I think that is better than being killed by the monsters in this world. Ever since that my parents passed down everything to me and let me lead the Sanchez, I made sure that no one could ever erase us. Well, we are one of the target clans as they know that we become weak because of my parents.

My father messed up in trusting people. In the end, they betrayed him and viola, we almost fell.

I knew that it would be hard to restore our clan. We were once on top and it vanished in one snap. But then, I refused to be deleted from this world where we grew up. With all the attacks, the only thing we can do now is to defend ourselves. We still need to muster strength in order for us to establish a resilient clan again.

“Treat your wound, Dawn. I'm gonna wash up,” Ace tapped my wound as he left me behind.

“I told you not to call me Dawn!” I exclaimed but he only waved his hand, ignoring me.

He probably did that to annoy me. Ace Dylan always knows how to upset me.

“Where's Dad?” I asked the maid as I came inside the mansion.

“I'm here, Adira.”

I threw my gaze to my father in a wheelchair. His nurse was behind him, guiding him.

This is the reason why I had to take over our clan. My father was not just betrayed, he also became unable to walk. Everytime I see his situation, it reminds me not to trust anybody in this world we have.

Ace is still young. Although he knows how to fight very well and he knows how things work in the Mafia world, he's still not prepared for this. Instead of him, I decided to step up.

Perhaps, when our clan is stable again and back on its feet, then I could go down and let him lead.

“What happened?” He asked, looking at my bleeding arm.

“We were attacked by the Delfin,” I heaved a heavy sigh.

“What did you do?” Until now, he's anxious. He's scared of us being erased with all the attacks and threats that we are receiving.

“I killed Vanessa,” I replied. “What did I tell you, Dad? I will not let anyone sue us,”

He blew a light sigh, still looking worried. I cannot blame him even though he made a huge mistake, the reason why we are in this situation. They were the ones who built everything we had and everything we have in this clan.

“I gave Mom a proper funeral,” I mentioned and drew a small smile on my lips.

“Is that the reason why you didn't want me to come?” My brows arched when he finally figured it out.

I nodded. “I knew that Vanessa would attack. They have been watching us, Dad. That's why I refrained you from coming,” I wouldn't want to bury both of my parents. I did that to protect him.

“You need a bodyguard, Adira, a private bodyguard. Why don't you hire one?”

I rolled my eyes when he brought up that topic again. He had been convincing me to hire one.

“Dad, I can protect myself. No need for that,”

“Adira, this is a dangerous world. You're not a god. You cannot be safe all the time regardless of how good you are,” I massaged my forehead while we are discussing that again. My ears are bleeding already.

“I'm still your father, Adira. Listen to me,” our eyes locked together and I know that I cannot disobey him anymore.

Besides, I'm so sick of arguing about this with him.

“Fine,” I finally agreed.

“Louis!” I yelled out loud.

“Yes?” He came in immediately.

“Hire me a private bodyguard. You know my standards,” he whistled before nodding.

He knows that I hated to have one and now, he's annoying me with his victorious smile after my father finally convinced me to hire one.

“I got you,” he replied and winked at me. I only glared at him.

“Happy?” I glanced back at my Dad.

Now, he's wearing that smirk.

“Relieved,” he replied.

Damn. I don't even need someone to protect me.

Whoever Louis will hire, he must pass my standards. He better brace himself.

Chapter 30“I'm not marrying you,” I didn't know how I managed to look at him when I said those hurtful words. While staring at him, watching how he reacts, my heart was breaking into pieces. “I'm sorry, Otis.” That's all I could say. I don't want to break his heart, but I don't want to marry him, start a family with him, only to be lonely and lie to myself about what I really feel. “I don't want to live in regrets, Otis.” I looked away. “If I marry you, I'm sure that you will be a good husband. I already pictured you, treating me very well. But I also realized, what would I feel when that happens? Would I be happy in one roof with you? Perhaps, not… Because I do not feel anything for you, Otis. I love you, but as a friend.” “You'll learn to love me,” he said with strong desperation and determination. I could see pain running from his eyes but I can also see that he doesn't want to let me go that easily. “And if I don't?” I was killing myself every time I turned him down. “I don

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 29

Chapter 29It was our last day in Pangasinan. As we spent our last night in the hotel, we decided to watch a movie together with lots of food. This time, I didn't let him cook. Instead, we just ordered. “I have a favor to ask you,” I uttered in the middle of the movie. His brows raised but his eyes remained on the television in front of us. He was indeed having fun with the movie that we are watching. “What is it?” He asked, while eating the chips. “Can we keep this a secret?” The moment I mentioned that, I captured his eyes immediately. His eyes turned at me and I saw questions that filled his eyes. Perhaps, he was confused why I wanted to hide our relationship. “Why? Do you plan to marry Otis?” He chuckled, still taking everything as a joke. “Of course not,” I heaved a sigh. “I just want to hide this from them first. You know, I haven't had a boyfriend before and I don't want to shock them. Besides, I have to talk to Otis first and clarify all the things,” I explained. I bit m

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 28

Chapter 28I kissed him without any hesitation. It might be reckless of me, but I didn't care anymore. The moment I reached his lips beyond his tall height, I didn't think of anything. I disregard everything that matters. I disregard all my responsibilities in my hands. I only allowed myself to feel that moment—to enjoy that moment as we both shared another passionate kiss. I could not hear anything. I feel like we were deaf and we vanished from our worlds. I can't hear anything except from the loud beating of my chest. It happened so fast. I just found myself drowning from that kiss. My hands were wrapped on his nape and his hands were exploring my body simultaneously. “C-Chase,” I moaned. In a blink of an eye, I felt how he removed my bra as if it was just a piece of cake to him. I could say that he was an expert on these things. “Ohhh…” I kept moaning like an idiot. My eyes were closed with the sensation that was filling my system. I felt the cold wall as Chase pinned me there

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 27

Chapter 27Dawn. What is special with my second name? People usually hate their second names because it's ugly. As for me, I hate it for a reason. I despise it for a reason. I was born at dawn, and my mother died at dawn. After her death, it's like the world took me the beauty of dawn to the point that I don't wanna see it anymore. “Dawn,” but what is this that I am feeling everytime Chase calls me by that name? Why is my chest pounding as if he erased the cruel history I had? It was like music to my ears. Everytime he utters it, it makes me forget everything—the pain. “Stop it,” I muttered and smirked. I came back staring at the sea as I heaved a heavy sigh. “What? It's a beautiful name, just like you.” My cheeks burned when he said that naturally as if there was nothing wrong to say it in front of me. “What is it that you like about me, Chase?” I suddenly got curious about that. I don't see anything special to me for him to fall for me. I'm just the heiress of the Sanchez, tryi

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 26

Chapter 26I set up the table in silence. Chase was not talking as well after he told me not to marry Otis. I can feel the awkwardness that was invading the two of us. He served the food he cooked at the table and we started to eat together without saying a single word. We were crossing each other and looking away so fast. “Is it bad?” I was stunned when he finally broke the ice. I thought he's not gonna talk to me anymore. “Did I say that it's bad?” I sounded grumpy with that. I avoided his eyes to get rid of my conscience. “Look, I don't want you to feel like I am obliging you to like me, okay? I don't need you to give me an answer, too. If you will marry Otis, then I will accept it with all my hea—”“Shit, your saying a lot.” I complaint as I stood up since I'm done eating already. “I'm not marrying him,” I left him that answer before I started to clean some of the dishes. I couldn't help but to flash a huge smile when I saw how he was glued on his seat there as if he was still

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 25

Chapter 25It was a very passionate kiss. I never flew over the moon, but I felt like I was flying around the world when I felt Chase invading my lips. “C-Chase,” I moaned when he sucked my lips and I felt his hands travelling around my body while I was pinned on the wall. I could not tell him to stop, because I know that if I do that, I will kill myself. My eyes remained closed and I felt like I lost all my strength with my legs trembling already. Beyond the air conditioner installed in the entire hotel room, I suddenly felt so hot. In every touch of his body and skin on my body, I am losing my mind; and in every movement of his tongue and lips, I am losing my soul. “W-What… are we doing?” I managed to utter despite the feeling of losing myself already. I felt so lost in the woods but wanting to be lost at the same time. He stopped, and that was when I opened my eyes. Our eyes met immediately, and I knew that those seducing stares were melting me away. His forehead landed on mine

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 24

Chapter 24“I'm kidnapping you!” My jaw dropped when he said that and drove the car so fast. He's what?“Stop this now, Chase! You don't know what you're doing! Otis is waiting for me!” I keep shouting at him but no matter what I say and do, Chase has made his decision and it cannot be shaken. He didn't listen to me until I lost my hope and chose to be silent in the backseat. “They will look for me,” I uttered behind him. I don't know if I want this to happen or not. For some reason, I felt like staying there and being kidnapped by him is the good option to escape all of this. “Where are we going? Answer me, Chase!” I hit the back of his seat again but he remained unbothered. He really treated me like a damn wind until we arrived at our destination that I don't know. I fell asleep on the way. When I woke up, I heard the roaring of the sea. My lips immediately parted when I saw the sea outside. I found Chase sitting in front of the car while watching the water. “Chase!” I exclaim

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 23

Chapter 23I had already accepted my fate. Every night, I am trying to picture myself marrying Otis and starting a family with him. I know to myself that my heart is against it, but I have left with no choice. “You're meeting his family tonight?” Louis asked while we were in the middle of eating our breakfast.“Tell me if you need anything,” Ace said beside me, still worried about me. Weeks have passed and he's finally here with us. Dad didn't notice any bruises or wounds from him. He didn't know anything about what really happened. “I'm sure they will like you. Besides, you and Otis have been hanging out. Do you have feelings for him now?” I hate to ruin that huge smile from my father's smile. He looks so happy just by hearing about my upcoming wedding with Otis. How can I mess it up when he is this happy? “Not yet,” I moved my eyes away. I don't want him to see how much I am forced to do this. “Well, when you are married, you will learn to love each other.” I hope that is how i

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 22

Chapter 22Chase’s POV “Oliver, calm down! You can't just come here like this!” Jaylor kept calling me while I was taking huge steps, entering the building of Otis’ condominium.“Open the goddamn door, Otis!” I growled like a beast while I was slamming the door really hard. If he doesn't open this yet, I will probably break this. “You're making a scene, Oliver!” Jaylor exclaimed, but I was too deaf to hear him out. “OTIS!” The door opened and I finally saw my damn twin brother. His brows met when he saw me outside.“What do you need?” He asked coldly. “You,” “OLIVER!”I quickly threw a punch at him as I barged inside his condo. His eyes became sharp after what I did. “What the fuck is your problem?!” Before he could even punch me back, I punched him again, making his lips drip red fluid even more.I grabbed his collar as I pinned him on the wall. “Why did you ask her to marry you, huh?! What the fuck are you thinking?!” I was fuming mad. I could not even tame the beast inside
