Chapter 4

I was taking huge steps as I marched out of there. I headed to the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of water and drank it at once as if I hadn't drunk water for a week.

“Woah, are you upset?” Ace asked when I crumpled the bottle while chasing my breathing.

“How can't she? That guy defeated her. Take note, he's an ordinary guy and yet she lose ove hi—”

“I can also cut your tongue, Louis.” He lost all his words when I threw my gaze at him, giving him my deadly eyes.

“Chill. Maybe he's just really good. Besides, that's a good thing. You want a stronger bodyguard, right?” Whatever Ace tells me to make me feel better, I just can't accept the fact that I lost over that guy. My pride is fucking shrinking!

“Tell me about him,” now, he captured my interest towards him.

“Well, his name is Chase Montereal. He's the same age as you and he worked as a Manager of a restaurant before. That's all I gathered,” Louis said as he simply shrugged.

“What? He doesn't have any background in fighting?” I couldn't believe that. How can a man who has no experience and background in things like this win over me?

I have faced lots of demons in this world and none of them defeated me.

“Nothing,” Ace confirmed, reviewing the information they have about Chase.

“That's crazy,” Louis added.

“Something's off,” I muttered, which drew their eyes back at me.

“What do you mean?” Ace.

I simply tilted my head. “I don't know yet. It doesn't feel right… I feel like something's missing with that information he gave us,” I bit my lower lip.

“You wouldn't deny that he looks trustworthy, right? I mean, with that look? He has the face, the appearance!” Louis breathed heavily, greeting his teeth as if he admired that man so much.

“You're such a gay,” Ace commented and shook his head.

“He is,” I uttered.

“Anyway, does that mean that he's gonna work for you starting tomorrow?” Louis now asked.

“Guys, he's still in the garden, don't forget. You hired him, you have to explain everything to him.” Ace reminded me.

“Serve him something to eat,” I said. “I have to calm myself first.”

I threw the crumpled bottle on the trash can before I headed to my room. I had to take a shower to ease my mind, especially my pride that was destroyed because of that man.

“Yeah, I'm fine here. Don't worry about me,” I stopped at the door of the garden as I saw Chase talking over the phone. I glanced at the food that the maids served and it seems like he already took a bite.

“Gotta go, bye.”

He paused when our eyes met as he saw me standing there already. I kept my blank stares at him.

“You got a girlfriend?” I didn't know why I asked that, too.

Why am I asking if he has a girlfriend?! What if he thinks that I am attracted to him? Fuck, Adira!

“No, Ms. Adira. It's just my friend, a very close one.” It was the first time I saw him drawing that little smile.

I was about to pull a chair when he already did that without me asking. I froze for a moment, looking a bit stunned with that gentleman's action. At this point, every single woman would definitely fall for him.

I remained silent and sat there. He sat in front of me and gave me those innocent eyes of his.

“Why did you apply here? I read your résumé. The only experience you have is being a Manager, which is far from this job.”

“Well, I have no choice. I have to earn money,” that was the most expected answer that anyone could predict.

“Where did you learn to fight?” I asked. I was trying to read him thoroughly.

A small smirk flashed beside his lips. “My uncle taught me since I was a kid. Unfortunately, he passed away when I was 15 years old. I continued the training he taught me all those years. I realized that I have that skill so when I saw that you're hiring, I didn't hesitate to try.”

I kept my silence for a few seconds, not letting him go with my stares. That sounds surreal, but inside me, I am still not convinced enough.

“This is a different world, Chase.” I said firmly. “The life we have is different from your ordinary life.”

I am not trying to scare him, but he must know what kind of job he will do.

“This is hell,” I muttered. “A lot of people want to kill me because they want to drag our family down. If you accept this job, don't be surprised to witness people dying and even you, would kill for me.”

“Your job is to protect me. In order to do that, you would have to kill whoever would dare to touch me.” He remained silent in front of me. I was waiting for fear to fill his eyes, but I didn't see it invading him.

In fact, he doesn't look terrified.

“Have you ever killed anyone?” I asked.

He quickly shook his head. “But I can kill if I had to,” he replied, filled with determination that doesn't seem to waver at all.

He really has the guts to accept this job, huh? Let's see until when he will last.

“Alright. You can start tomorrow, you have to live here as well. You can go home every weekend, only if I don't need you.”

“That's clear, Ms. Adi—”

“Call me, Adira.” We will be with each other often now. I have been comfortable with him.

“Alright, Adira.”

I was lost for words the moment he called me right through my first name. Something inside my chest fell for some reason.

“Do you have any questions?” I looked away when I realized that he didn't move his eyes away from me, either. He was too focused on me.

“None,” he replied shortly. I cleared my throat and nodded.

“Good,” I stood up from my seat and left him alone there.

“Everything settled?” Louis asked.

“Look for more applicants,”

His brows crossed. “What? Why? Didn't you hire him?”

“I did,” I replied. “But how sure are you that he will last?” I smirked confidently.

“Let's see until when he could last in this world we have,”

Chapter 30“I'm not marrying you,” I didn't know how I managed to look at him when I said those hurtful words. While staring at him, watching how he reacts, my heart was breaking into pieces. “I'm sorry, Otis.” That's all I could say. I don't want to break his heart, but I don't want to marry him, start a family with him, only to be lonely and lie to myself about what I really feel. “I don't want to live in regrets, Otis.” I looked away. “If I marry you, I'm sure that you will be a good husband. I already pictured you, treating me very well. But I also realized, what would I feel when that happens? Would I be happy in one roof with you? Perhaps, not… Because I do not feel anything for you, Otis. I love you, but as a friend.” “You'll learn to love me,” he said with strong desperation and determination. I could see pain running from his eyes but I can also see that he doesn't want to let me go that easily. “And if I don't?” I was killing myself every time I turned him down. “I don

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 29

Chapter 29It was our last day in Pangasinan. As we spent our last night in the hotel, we decided to watch a movie together with lots of food. This time, I didn't let him cook. Instead, we just ordered. “I have a favor to ask you,” I uttered in the middle of the movie. His brows raised but his eyes remained on the television in front of us. He was indeed having fun with the movie that we are watching. “What is it?” He asked, while eating the chips. “Can we keep this a secret?” The moment I mentioned that, I captured his eyes immediately. His eyes turned at me and I saw questions that filled his eyes. Perhaps, he was confused why I wanted to hide our relationship. “Why? Do you plan to marry Otis?” He chuckled, still taking everything as a joke. “Of course not,” I heaved a sigh. “I just want to hide this from them first. You know, I haven't had a boyfriend before and I don't want to shock them. Besides, I have to talk to Otis first and clarify all the things,” I explained. I bit m

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 28

Chapter 28I kissed him without any hesitation. It might be reckless of me, but I didn't care anymore. The moment I reached his lips beyond his tall height, I didn't think of anything. I disregard everything that matters. I disregard all my responsibilities in my hands. I only allowed myself to feel that moment—to enjoy that moment as we both shared another passionate kiss. I could not hear anything. I feel like we were deaf and we vanished from our worlds. I can't hear anything except from the loud beating of my chest. It happened so fast. I just found myself drowning from that kiss. My hands were wrapped on his nape and his hands were exploring my body simultaneously. “C-Chase,” I moaned. In a blink of an eye, I felt how he removed my bra as if it was just a piece of cake to him. I could say that he was an expert on these things. “Ohhh…” I kept moaning like an idiot. My eyes were closed with the sensation that was filling my system. I felt the cold wall as Chase pinned me there

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 27

Chapter 27Dawn. What is special with my second name? People usually hate their second names because it's ugly. As for me, I hate it for a reason. I despise it for a reason. I was born at dawn, and my mother died at dawn. After her death, it's like the world took me the beauty of dawn to the point that I don't wanna see it anymore. “Dawn,” but what is this that I am feeling everytime Chase calls me by that name? Why is my chest pounding as if he erased the cruel history I had? It was like music to my ears. Everytime he utters it, it makes me forget everything—the pain. “Stop it,” I muttered and smirked. I came back staring at the sea as I heaved a heavy sigh. “What? It's a beautiful name, just like you.” My cheeks burned when he said that naturally as if there was nothing wrong to say it in front of me. “What is it that you like about me, Chase?” I suddenly got curious about that. I don't see anything special to me for him to fall for me. I'm just the heiress of the Sanchez, tryi

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 26

Chapter 26I set up the table in silence. Chase was not talking as well after he told me not to marry Otis. I can feel the awkwardness that was invading the two of us. He served the food he cooked at the table and we started to eat together without saying a single word. We were crossing each other and looking away so fast. “Is it bad?” I was stunned when he finally broke the ice. I thought he's not gonna talk to me anymore. “Did I say that it's bad?” I sounded grumpy with that. I avoided his eyes to get rid of my conscience. “Look, I don't want you to feel like I am obliging you to like me, okay? I don't need you to give me an answer, too. If you will marry Otis, then I will accept it with all my hea—”“Shit, your saying a lot.” I complaint as I stood up since I'm done eating already. “I'm not marrying him,” I left him that answer before I started to clean some of the dishes. I couldn't help but to flash a huge smile when I saw how he was glued on his seat there as if he was still

  • Guarding Her Heart   Chapter 25

Chapter 25It was a very passionate kiss. I never flew over the moon, but I felt like I was flying around the world when I felt Chase invading my lips. “C-Chase,” I moaned when he sucked my lips and I felt his hands travelling around my body while I was pinned on the wall. I could not tell him to stop, because I know that if I do that, I will kill myself. My eyes remained closed and I felt like I lost all my strength with my legs trembling already. Beyond the air conditioner installed in the entire hotel room, I suddenly felt so hot. In every touch of his body and skin on my body, I am losing my mind; and in every movement of his tongue and lips, I am losing my soul. “W-What… are we doing?” I managed to utter despite the feeling of losing myself already. I felt so lost in the woods but wanting to be lost at the same time. He stopped, and that was when I opened my eyes. Our eyes met immediately, and I knew that those seducing stares were melting me away. His forehead landed on mine
