I was steps away from him when I stopped.

His words—it was the adrenaline—felt like he’d reached into my chest and squeezed my heart until it stopped. I turned back, my vision blurred with hot, angry tears.

"Adrenaline?" I whispered, my voice trembling. I stepped back into his space, forcing him to look at me. "Is that what you call it? When your wolf recognized mine? When you couldn’t even breathe because my scent was the only thing you wanted?"

"Jessica, stop. Go back to the house." He finally said.

"No. Look at me and say it again," I demanded. I reached out and grabbed his forearm. His skin was like fire, and the second we touched, that electric spark traveled up my arm, making my breath hitch. "Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel the bond pulling at your soul every time I walk into a room."

Kaelen snapped.

His hand shot out, his fingers wrapping around my upper arm. He didn't hurt me, but his grip was strong. He yanked me forward until our chests were inches apart, his dark eyes finally burning into mine with a raw, agonizing hunger.

"Of course I feel it!" he growled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that made my knees weak. "I feel it every second. It’s like a hook in my ribs, Jessica. Every time Nathan touches you, I want to rip his throat out. Every time you smile at him, I want to burn this whole pack to the ground."

He was shaking. The mean statue was gone, replaced by a man who looked like he was being torn apart from the inside.

"But I’m a soldier with nothing," he hissed, his face lowering until his forehead pressed against mine. "And he is the Alpha. If I take you, they will hunt us. They will kill me, and they will call you a traitor. Is that what you want? To spend your life running in the mud because of a mistake the moon made?"

"It wasn't a mistake," I sobbed, my hands clutching his shirt. "I’d rather run in the mud with you than sit on a throne with him."

For a split second, I thought he was going to kiss me. His gaze dropped to my lips, and his breath hitched. The air between us was filled with need, I could almost feel it.

"Jessica?" Nathan's voice sounded.

Kaelen let go of me so fast I stumbled back. We both spun around, our hearts racing, to see Nathan standing at the entrance of the hedge maze.

He wasn't smiling anymore. His blue eyes moved from my flushed face and tear-stained cheeks to Kaelen’s hands, which were still balled into white-knuckled fists. The silence in the garden became suffocating.

"Nathan," I gasped, trying to wipe my eyes with the back of my hand. "I... I was just—"

"You said you wanted to be alone, Jess," Nathan said, his voice dangerously smooth. He walked toward us, his eyes locked on Kaelen. "Yet I find you here, cornered by the help. And he seemed to be holding you quite firmly."

Kaelen went back to his mean self, but I could see the pulse jumping in his neck. He lowered his head, his posture shifting into that of a submissive guard, but the tension in his shoulders screamed of a predator ready to pounce.

"I apologize, Alpha," Kaelen said. "The Lady was... upset. She tripped near the fountain. I was merely steadying her."

Nathan stopped a foot away from Kaelen. He was shorter than Kaelen. He reached out and brushed a piece of something I didn't see off Kaelen’s shoulder, a gesture that was meant to be belittling.

"Steadying her," Nathan repeated. He turned to me, his expression softening into that fake, patronizing mask I hated. "Is that true, Jess? Are you so clumsy today? Or was he overstepping his bounds?"

I looked at Kaelen. His eyes were fixed on the dirt, pleading with me silently to stay quiet. If I told the truth, Kaelen would be executed before the sun set.

"I tripped," I lied. "I’m just... tired, Nathan. The wedding stress."

Nathan looked at me for a long time, his eyes searching mine. I could see the doubt there. He wasn't stupid.

He stepped closer to me and wrapped a possessive arm around my waist, pulling me hard against his side. "Then let’s get you inside. You shouldn't be out here with... this." He gestured vaguely at Kaelen as if he were a piece of trash on the sidewalk.

"Kaelen," Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave. "Since you’re so concerned with her tripping, you can spend the night guarding the outer gate. In the rain. I don't want you near her quarters until the ceremony tomorrow."

My heart sank. He was separating us.

Kaelen bowed low. "Yes, Alpha."

Nathan led me away, his grip on my waist was uncomfortably tight. I looked back over my shoulder one last time. Kaelen was still standing there, and he looked utterly alone.

As Nathan led me toward the house, he leaned in and whispered in my ear. "I don't know what game you're playing, Jessica. But you belong to me. Remember that. If that mutt touches you again, I won't just punish him. I'll make you watch while I end him.”

I could feel the silence of the room press down on me, like it was eating up the remaining oxygen left. If I said I had healed from Kaelen's reaction, then call me a liar.I forced myself to sleep. Despite the cold night breeze and the air from the air conditioner, nature decided to be cruel to me. I had been staring at the ceiling for the past... I don't know. Hours?Meanwhile, the bond was screaming at me. It didn't seem to care about that crazy attitude Kaelen had displayed, it only cared that he was hurting. The fact that he was silently bleeding while trying to act professional was what bothered me."Not on my watch," I whispered.I grabbed a basin of warm water, some clean linen strips, and a jar of healing salve my mother kept for emergencies. My heart was hammering against my ribs as I walked to the door and pulled it open.Kaelen snapped to attention instantly. He looked exhausted no matter how active he tried to appear. "Lady Jessica? It is late. Do you need something?""Ins

The grand hall was filled with different faces, both those I have seen and those I haven't.I walked down the aisle with my father, my eyes fixed on the floor. I didn’t want to see Nathan’s smug face. I just kept thinking about the blood on that leather strap. I kept thinking about Kaelen, bleeding out there while I was forced to become a trophy for a monster. We reached the altar. Nathan took my hand, looking at me like he’d already won."Dearly beloved," the High Priest began, his voice echoing through the silent hall. The ceremony reached the point of the Blood Vow. Nathan pulled a small ceremonial blade to slice our palms and seal the union. He reached for my hand again, his eyes dark with triumph. The moment our skin touched, I felt a surge of cold, blinding power blast between us. Nathan was thrown back a step, and I collapsed to my knees, gasping for air. A collective gasp went up from the thousands of guests. The air in the hall turned freezing, and a low, unnatural hum vibr

I stood by the window, my forehead pressed against the cold glass. I felt like a prisoner in my own room. Nathan had stationed two guards right outside my door, and it was impossible for a lady like me to jump from the balcony. There was no way out, not for me. I looked at the wedding dress hanging at the corner, everything about it pissed me off the more. I was so angry I wanted to rip it off until it was rags.A soft click at the door made me turn.My mother walked inside, closing the door quietly behind her. She looked tired."I wanted to check on the bride," she said softly, walking toward me. She reached out to touch my cheek, but I pulled away. "The bride is a prisoner, Mom," I said. "Is this how it’s supposed to be? Am I supposed to feel like I’m waiting for my execution?""It’s just nerves, Jess," she whispered, though she wouldn't meet my eyes. "Being a Luna is a heavy burden. You have to think of the pack. Nathan will provide stability. He will provide safety."I looked at

Morning came quicker than I thought.I woke up wrapping my arms so tight against my chest. Thinking about Kaelen—the way he’d breathed me in, the way his heart had hammered against mine—was the only thing giving me a sense of peace. It was a secret, dangerous anchor in a sea of lies.A soft knock at the door shattered the quiet."Lady Jessica? It’s Anne. Everyone is waiting.""Coming," I croaked.Anne walked in, already holding out a dress that looked like a summer sky. It was beautiful, expensive, and I hated it. As she brushed my hair and pinned it back, she kept chirping about the breakfast menu. "The King and Queen are already seated, and Prince Nathan arrived early. They’re in the grand dining hall."My heart did a hopeful little skip. If Kaelen was my protector, he’d be right outside my door, wouldn't he? I finished dressing and practically threw the door open, my eyes searching the hallway. Empty. There was a guard at the end of the corridor, but it was just some boy from the

I quickly pulled off the silk dress as soon as I stepped into my room, wearing only a silk slip. I could still feel the stinging pain from where the corset had grabbed my ribs. I should have been happy. The photoshoot in the garden had gone perfectly. Nathan and I had cool conversations, and the pack photographer had gushed about how radiant we looked together. But as soon as the door clicked shut and I was alone, I felt like I was suffocating. I walked to the mirror and stared at my reflection. My neck was flushed. My eyes looked wild, the pupils were still slightly dilated. Honestly, I looked like a mess. Suddenly, my wolf began to pace in the back of my mind, her claws scratching at the floor of my consciousness. She wasn't interested in the "Golden Alpha" anymore, she wanted the protector."Stop it," I whispered to the empty room. "He’s a guard. He’s a soldier. He’s nothing."But my body knew I was lying. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those dark, scarred hands. I saw the w
