Chapter 2

Author: Gogo Coco
An awkward silence fell over the room.

Carlo's face darkened. "Go home, Mia. Madison needs to rest."

He told her several times, but she refused to leave.

Instead, she glared at me and stepped forward to defend him.

"Madison, my lab team and I ran the tests twice. The Don's condition is real. You're his wife, yet you somehow got pregnant when he can't father a child. Aren't you ashamed of betraying him?"

I pushed myself upright, ignoring the ache in my body.

"I saw that report. It only showed observations taken before and after centrifugation. Is that what you call two complete tests?"

For a second, Mia's expression went stiff. When she answered, her voice had an odd, guarded edge.

"Both readings showed no sperm. The results aren't wrong."

I let out a cold laugh and raised my voice.

"You didn't even finish investigating. You sent Carlo a partial report, made him think I'd been unfaithful, and turned him against our baby. What exactly were you trying to accomplish?"

Carlo strode over and grabbed my arm.

"Madison. Watch what you say."

I slapped his hand away and stared at him in disbelief.

The problems with Mia's so-called evidence were right in front of him. Still, he thought I was the one talking nonsense.

Mia bit her lower lip. Her eyes filled with tears.

"I expose your secret, and you turn around and slander me? If you won't admit what you've done, there's nothing more I can say!"

She spun toward the door.

Carlo pulled out his phone and opened the photograph of his test report.

Only half the document had been captured. The crucial section containing details of the centrifugation procedure had been cropped out entirely.

He shut off the screen, irritated.

"I'll go to the lab tomorrow and get the original."

"Why not today?" I asked.

He opened his mouth, then stopped. In the end, he said nothing.

My eyes burned.

It wasn't that he couldn't go today. He didn't want to.

He'd already decided I was guilty. Facts weren't going to change his mind.

The following afternoon, Mia sent him another photograph. Once again, it contained only selected figures and a short conclusion.

Disappointment settled on my chest so heavily I could barely breathe.

"Didn't you promise you'd go to the lab yourself?"

Carlo kept scrolling through the image.

"The lab staff went to a conference in Aldmoor. Mia says this report is conclusive enough."

I gave a humorless smile.

"You really trust her that much?"

"She's the youngest andrologist at the family hospital. She's never made a mistake."

Tears threatened, but I fought them back.

"And I'm the wife who stood beside you while you fought your way up from nothing!"

For an instant, his face drained of color.

Then he looked away and took a prenatal report from his pocket.

"Look at this. The estimated start of your pregnancy falls on the day I was in Sorvana negotiating a smuggling deal."

The absurdity of it made my head spin.

I snatched the report away.

"That estimate is calculated from the first day of my last period! It isn't the exact day we had sex! Are you seriously going to interrogate me like some rat in your organization?"

I crumpled the paper and hurled it into the corner.

"You were so afraid your enemies would kidnap me that you had tracking devices and security everywhere I went. You know exactly when I get to the firm and when I come home to the estate. You know my schedule better than I do. And now one estimated date is enough for you to convict me? Does that make any sense?"

Carlo's face hardened. He still looked at me as though I were making excuses.

"If you won't tell me, I won't force you. We'll know what's true when the paternity results come back."

He walked straight out of the room.

For a long time, he didn't return.

One year later.Autumn had cooled Ravenport, and fallen leaves covered the streets. At the National Legal Summit's award ceremony, I stood beneath the spotlights and accepted one of the profession's highest honors.I'd become one of the country's most sought-after chief legal advisers, with Kingsley Street firms and multinational corporations competing for my counsel. At the upscale reception afterward, I noticed a man standing alone in a corner.Carlo had grown so thin I barely recognized him. The old sharpness and authority were gone from his face. All that remained was a numb, lonely silence. When he realized I was watching him, he stiffened. He stayed exactly where he was, not daring to take a step toward me.I walked over with my glass, perfectly at ease."It's been a while, Mr. Moretti."His throat worked."Madison. Congratulations... on such an incredible honor."I took a sip of champagne and smiled faintly."Carlo, I have a question for you."If, on the day you rec

In the second month after our divorce, I went back to the estate where I'd spent five years of my life.I needed to collect the belongings I'd left behind. When I opened the front door, the smell of cigars and whiskey hit me like a wall.Every curtain was drawn. The living room was as dark as a tomb.A tall figure slumped on the sofa lurched upright at the sound of the door, knocking a glass from the coffee table.Carlo's jaw was covered in stubble. His face was hollow, his whole body gaunt. He looked less like a feared Don than a man who'd been abandoned on the street. He didn't even stop to pick up the glass."Madison! You're back! Does this mean you've forgiven me?"Then he noticed the movers behind me and went still.I looked away and spoke in a businesslike tone."I'm here for the rest of my things."As I surveyed the house, I realized nothing had changed since I left.Something simmered in the kitchen: the minestrone I loved. Its familiar scent felt like a cruel joke.

A light rain had started by the time the inquiry ended.I had barely stepped outside the hospital when hurried footsteps sounded behind me.A large black umbrella appeared over my head. Carlo stood so close that his broad frame seemed to block out the world."Madison, don't get wet. You haven't fully recovered. The doctor said you shouldn't catch a chill."I turned and pushed him away."Take your umbrella. I don't need it."His eyes welled up at once. With shaking hands, he pulled a pregnancy confirmation slip from his pocket. It was the one I'd planned to give him along with the positive test, before I'd lost the chance to show it to him.A tear dropped onto the back of his hand."I found this in the drawer beside our bed. You wrote something on the back."In my own handwriting were the words: "Surprise Carlo when he gets home from his trip."The sight made my chest seize. Even breathing hurt. The Madison who'd been so excited to share that news with her husband no longer

That evening, Dr. Whitfield, the attending physician at the family hospital, called me.There was a sadness in his voice."Donna Moretti, we've identified the cause of the miscarriage."I tightened my grip on the phone."What was it?""The embryo had a chromosomal abnormality. Miscarriages like this are unfortunately common. It was not necessarily caused by emotional stress or physical impact. Even if you'd spent every day in a protected hospital room, the pregnancy might still have ended the same way."After the call, my legs gave out. I sank onto the carpet. Our baby had never had much chance of surviving. But Carlo's cruelty had never been about hurting the child we'd lost. He'd hurt me. The woman wheeled out of surgery after losing her baby, only to be accused of falling in love with someone else. He'd honestly believed that as long as we loved each other, he could dispose of my imaginary lover and we'd go right back to being happy. As if offering to forgive a betrayal t

I didn't go to any of the properties in Carlo's name.I went to my own private apartment, a place nobody knew about and nobody could take from me.The next morning, I took a long, hot shower, put on a sharp tailored suit, and arrived at my office on time.I was one of the top attorneys at one of Ravenport's leading law firms.Even without the title of Donna, my name carried weight on Kingsley Street. Why on earth did Carlo think I couldn't bear to lose him?At exactly three that afternoon, my phone vibrated.A message from the family hospital's genetic testing department lit up the screen. The paternity report was three pages long.My fingertips went cold as I scrolled to the final page."Genetic analysis supports Carlo Moretti as the biological father of the embryo from which the submitted sample was taken."My eyes burned.I hadn't betrayed him. Not once. There it was in black and white. The proof I'd been begging him to believe.I locked the screen and took a sip of my

Someone entered the security code without a moment's hesitation.Mia walked in carrying a folder, looking so comfortable that anyone might have mistaken her for the lady of the house. My fingers curled into fists."How do you know our door code?"She came closer with a little smile."You were in the hospital for a while. The Don got drunk one night because he was upset, so I stayed to look after him for a few days."Carlo's voice cut through the room."Mia. Leave the documents and go."She glanced at the paper scraps scattered across the floor and sighed."Throwing me out already? Don't you want the photograph back?"She pulled an ultrasound printout from her bag.It was crumpled, with creases running across the image.I snatched it from her hand."Who gave you permission to treat it like this?"Mia shrugged, without a trace of regret."I just wanted to check how the baby had been developing for the Don. I wrinkled it by accident."Then she had the nerve to lecture me.
