Chapter 3

Author: Gogo Coco
By midnight, I was burning with fever.

It took an entire night of treatment before my condition stabilized.

Somewhere in the haze, I felt arms gather me close, warming my chilled body. Carlo's voice was rough with lingering fear.

"That's it. Go back to sleep. Once your fever breaks, we'll take you home."

Out of habit, I leaned toward him. A tear slid from the corner of my eye.

Three years earlier, Carlo had just taken control of the family. Rival factions were fighting for power, and violence seemed to follow us everywhere.

When I was kidnapped and dragged to an abandoned warehouse, Carlo had taken a bullet meant for me.

I'd believed a man willing to give up his life for me would always protect me. Always cherish me.

Now I understood that people could change.

Even the greatest love could be destroyed by distrust.

A light rain fell on the day I was discharged.

As soon as we arrived at the estate, I went straight to the nursery.

I stopped dead in the doorway.

The room I'd decorated so carefully was empty.

The handmade crib I'd commissioned. The pacifiers I'd chosen. The toys I'd bought. Every last thing was gone.

Carlo appeared behind me.

"I thought seeing it would upset you, so I had Enzo clear it out before you came home."

He sounded as if he'd done me a favor.

I pointed at the wall.

"Where's the ultrasound picture? The one I put right there?"

He hesitated, then shrugged.

"Mia wanted to see it. I gave it to her."

Anger surged through me.

"That was the only picture of our baby! How could you give it away?"

Carlo pinched the bridge of his nose impatiently.

"If the paternity test says the baby wasn't mine, that photograph will only remind me, over and over, that you fell in love with another man. Let it go. Pushing this will only humiliate us both."

Tears spilled down my face.

So I wasn't even allowed to grieve my own child.

Over the next few days, Carlo canceled every meeting and stayed at the estate with me.

He cooked my favorite pasta himself. Every night, he pulled me firmly into his arms as we slept.

I never once looked his way, but he kept at it every day, all so I'd recover.

One night, he whispered against my ear, "You're still hiding that man from me? The test results will be ready in two days."

My heart raced. My lips trembled.

For one fleeting second, I wanted to ask him to forget the report. To choose me instead of a piece of paper.

If he could just believe me, maybe we could start again.

Then, the next morning, I found a sheet of paper on the living room table.

It was covered in dates: his business trips and the last times we'd slept together.

With shaking hands, I carried it to him.

"Did you write this? What are you trying to calculate?"

Carlo barely glanced up.

"I'm trying to find proof."

I tore the sheet into tiny pieces in front of him.

"We slept together plenty of times back then! How is that not proof?"

His suspicious look deepened.

"The more hysterical you get, the harder it is to believe you."

Something inside me went quiet.

There was nothing left of the love I'd been desperately holding on to.

Carlo couldn't see my grief or my helplessness. All he saw was a woman losing her mind.

I stopped arguing, went straight to the bedroom, and took out the divorce agreement I'd already printed.

I was about to hand it to him when the front door opened.

One year later.Autumn had cooled Ravenport, and fallen leaves covered the streets. At the National Legal Summit's award ceremony, I stood beneath the spotlights and accepted one of the profession's highest honors.I'd become one of the country's most sought-after chief legal advisers, with Kingsley Street firms and multinational corporations competing for my counsel. At the upscale reception afterward, I noticed a man standing alone in a corner.Carlo had grown so thin I barely recognized him. The old sharpness and authority were gone from his face. All that remained was a numb, lonely silence. When he realized I was watching him, he stiffened. He stayed exactly where he was, not daring to take a step toward me.I walked over with my glass, perfectly at ease."It's been a while, Mr. Moretti."His throat worked."Madison. Congratulations... on such an incredible honor."I took a sip of champagne and smiled faintly."Carlo, I have a question for you."If, on the day you rec

In the second month after our divorce, I went back to the estate where I'd spent five years of my life.I needed to collect the belongings I'd left behind. When I opened the front door, the smell of cigars and whiskey hit me like a wall.Every curtain was drawn. The living room was as dark as a tomb.A tall figure slumped on the sofa lurched upright at the sound of the door, knocking a glass from the coffee table.Carlo's jaw was covered in stubble. His face was hollow, his whole body gaunt. He looked less like a feared Don than a man who'd been abandoned on the street. He didn't even stop to pick up the glass."Madison! You're back! Does this mean you've forgiven me?"Then he noticed the movers behind me and went still.I looked away and spoke in a businesslike tone."I'm here for the rest of my things."As I surveyed the house, I realized nothing had changed since I left.Something simmered in the kitchen: the minestrone I loved. Its familiar scent felt like a cruel joke.

A light rain had started by the time the inquiry ended.I had barely stepped outside the hospital when hurried footsteps sounded behind me.A large black umbrella appeared over my head. Carlo stood so close that his broad frame seemed to block out the world."Madison, don't get wet. You haven't fully recovered. The doctor said you shouldn't catch a chill."I turned and pushed him away."Take your umbrella. I don't need it."His eyes welled up at once. With shaking hands, he pulled a pregnancy confirmation slip from his pocket. It was the one I'd planned to give him along with the positive test, before I'd lost the chance to show it to him.A tear dropped onto the back of his hand."I found this in the drawer beside our bed. You wrote something on the back."In my own handwriting were the words: "Surprise Carlo when he gets home from his trip."The sight made my chest seize. Even breathing hurt. The Madison who'd been so excited to share that news with her husband no longer

That evening, Dr. Whitfield, the attending physician at the family hospital, called me.There was a sadness in his voice."Donna Moretti, we've identified the cause of the miscarriage."I tightened my grip on the phone."What was it?""The embryo had a chromosomal abnormality. Miscarriages like this are unfortunately common. It was not necessarily caused by emotional stress or physical impact. Even if you'd spent every day in a protected hospital room, the pregnancy might still have ended the same way."After the call, my legs gave out. I sank onto the carpet. Our baby had never had much chance of surviving. But Carlo's cruelty had never been about hurting the child we'd lost. He'd hurt me. The woman wheeled out of surgery after losing her baby, only to be accused of falling in love with someone else. He'd honestly believed that as long as we loved each other, he could dispose of my imaginary lover and we'd go right back to being happy. As if offering to forgive a betrayal t

I didn't go to any of the properties in Carlo's name.I went to my own private apartment, a place nobody knew about and nobody could take from me.The next morning, I took a long, hot shower, put on a sharp tailored suit, and arrived at my office on time.I was one of the top attorneys at one of Ravenport's leading law firms.Even without the title of Donna, my name carried weight on Kingsley Street. Why on earth did Carlo think I couldn't bear to lose him?At exactly three that afternoon, my phone vibrated.A message from the family hospital's genetic testing department lit up the screen. The paternity report was three pages long.My fingertips went cold as I scrolled to the final page."Genetic analysis supports Carlo Moretti as the biological father of the embryo from which the submitted sample was taken."My eyes burned.I hadn't betrayed him. Not once. There it was in black and white. The proof I'd been begging him to believe.I locked the screen and took a sip of my

Someone entered the security code without a moment's hesitation.Mia walked in carrying a folder, looking so comfortable that anyone might have mistaken her for the lady of the house. My fingers curled into fists."How do you know our door code?"She came closer with a little smile."You were in the hospital for a while. The Don got drunk one night because he was upset, so I stayed to look after him for a few days."Carlo's voice cut through the room."Mia. Leave the documents and go."She glanced at the paper scraps scattered across the floor and sighed."Throwing me out already? Don't you want the photograph back?"She pulled an ultrasound printout from her bag.It was crumpled, with creases running across the image.I snatched it from her hand."Who gave you permission to treat it like this?"Mia shrugged, without a trace of regret."I just wanted to check how the baby had been developing for the Don. I wrinkled it by accident."Then she had the nerve to lecture me.
