Chapter 4

Author: Gogo Coco
Someone entered the security code without a moment's hesitation.

Mia walked in carrying a folder, looking so comfortable that anyone might have mistaken her for the lady of the house.

My fingers curled into fists.

"How do you know our door code?"

She came closer with a little smile.

"You were in the hospital for a while. The Don got drunk one night because he was upset, so I stayed to look after him for a few days."

Carlo's voice cut through the room.

"Mia. Leave the documents and go."

She glanced at the paper scraps scattered across the floor and sighed.

"Throwing me out already? Don't you want the photograph back?"

She pulled an ultrasound printout from her bag.

It was crumpled, with creases running across the image.

I snatched it from her hand.

"Who gave you permission to treat it like this?"

Mia shrugged, without a trace of regret.

"I just wanted to check how the baby had been developing for the Don. I wrinkled it by accident."

Then she had the nerve to lecture me.

"You should be grateful, Madison. He's been more than generous with you. Another man would've divorced you already."

I pressed the photograph against my chest.

"Am I supposed to thank him for accusing me of something I never did?"

As my voice rose, Carlo stepped between us.

"That's enough, Mia. Stop talking."

Mia swayed slightly, then gave a resigned nod.

"Fine. If you're determined to defend her, I won't get involved anymore."

She shoved the folder into his hand and left without looking back.

After everything that had happened, I had no energy left to fight.

I held out the divorce agreement.

"Carlo. Sign it."

His eyes swept over the document, turning cold and dangerous.

"Madison, stop this. I only asked Mia to deliver some papers."

"This has nothing to do with Mia."

He stared at the agreement as if I'd cornered him. Then he ripped it from my hand, locked it inside his safe, and spoke with absolute authority.

"Whatever you've done, I'm not divorcing you."

That night, Carlo stayed in his study for hours.

I couldn't sleep. When I got up to fetch some water, I heard him speaking to Mia on the phone through the partly closed study door.

"Don Moretti, she cheated on you," Mia pleaded. "Why are you still keeping her?"

Carlo was leaning back in his black leather chair.

"Madison has been with me for five years. She made one mistake. I'm willing to give her another chance."

"And what about the divorce papers? She's threatening to leave. Aren't you worried she actually will?"

I saw him look at our wedding photograph on the desk.

He gave a dismissive snort.

"The power, the status, everything that comes with being a Mafia Donna? Who would walk away from that?"

I smiled to myself, full of contempt.

Carlo, you couldn't have been more wrong.

I had never cared about the lofty title of Donna. And I was more than ready to walk away from you.

I went back to the bedroom and packed my suitcase.

Carlo heard the noise and came in scowling.

"What are you doing?"

I didn't look up. I zipped the suitcase and headed for the door.

"Moving out."

He stepped in front of me, panic flashing in his eyes.

"Why? Are you really that desperate to run away with him?"

I looked up at the face I'd loved for five years.

For the first time, he seemed like a complete stranger.

Carlo still loved me in his own way. But his love was soaked in suspicion. It came with condescension and pity, as if he were doing me a favor.

I shook my head.

"What are you going to do when you find out there is no other man?"

He held my gaze.

"I'll make it up to you. Money. The docks. A share of the family businesses. Whatever you want, as long as you stay."

A bitter smile touched my lips.

"And after you've paid me off? I'm supposed to keep pretending I'm happily married to a man who doesn't trust me?"

He froze. Then anger surged into his face, a vein standing out at his temple.

I pushed past his outstretched arm, walked out of the house, and climbed into the taxi I'd already booked.

Carlo's pride wouldn't let him follow me.

He was so sure I was only acting out, so sure I'd never really leave.

He stood a few yards away, barely controlling his anger.

"You can move out," he called. "But when the test results come in, you will come back here."

Just before the taxi pulled away, I rolled down the window.

"I'm never coming back."

One year later.Autumn had cooled Ravenport, and fallen leaves covered the streets. At the National Legal Summit's award ceremony, I stood beneath the spotlights and accepted one of the profession's highest honors.I'd become one of the country's most sought-after chief legal advisers, with Kingsley Street firms and multinational corporations competing for my counsel. At the upscale reception afterward, I noticed a man standing alone in a corner.Carlo had grown so thin I barely recognized him. The old sharpness and authority were gone from his face. All that remained was a numb, lonely silence. When he realized I was watching him, he stiffened. He stayed exactly where he was, not daring to take a step toward me.I walked over with my glass, perfectly at ease."It's been a while, Mr. Moretti."His throat worked."Madison. Congratulations... on such an incredible honor."I took a sip of champagne and smiled faintly."Carlo, I have a question for you."If, on the day you rec

In the second month after our divorce, I went back to the estate where I'd spent five years of my life.I needed to collect the belongings I'd left behind. When I opened the front door, the smell of cigars and whiskey hit me like a wall.Every curtain was drawn. The living room was as dark as a tomb.A tall figure slumped on the sofa lurched upright at the sound of the door, knocking a glass from the coffee table.Carlo's jaw was covered in stubble. His face was hollow, his whole body gaunt. He looked less like a feared Don than a man who'd been abandoned on the street. He didn't even stop to pick up the glass."Madison! You're back! Does this mean you've forgiven me?"Then he noticed the movers behind me and went still.I looked away and spoke in a businesslike tone."I'm here for the rest of my things."As I surveyed the house, I realized nothing had changed since I left.Something simmered in the kitchen: the minestrone I loved. Its familiar scent felt like a cruel joke.

A light rain had started by the time the inquiry ended.I had barely stepped outside the hospital when hurried footsteps sounded behind me.A large black umbrella appeared over my head. Carlo stood so close that his broad frame seemed to block out the world."Madison, don't get wet. You haven't fully recovered. The doctor said you shouldn't catch a chill."I turned and pushed him away."Take your umbrella. I don't need it."His eyes welled up at once. With shaking hands, he pulled a pregnancy confirmation slip from his pocket. It was the one I'd planned to give him along with the positive test, before I'd lost the chance to show it to him.A tear dropped onto the back of his hand."I found this in the drawer beside our bed. You wrote something on the back."In my own handwriting were the words: "Surprise Carlo when he gets home from his trip."The sight made my chest seize. Even breathing hurt. The Madison who'd been so excited to share that news with her husband no longer

That evening, Dr. Whitfield, the attending physician at the family hospital, called me.There was a sadness in his voice."Donna Moretti, we've identified the cause of the miscarriage."I tightened my grip on the phone."What was it?""The embryo had a chromosomal abnormality. Miscarriages like this are unfortunately common. It was not necessarily caused by emotional stress or physical impact. Even if you'd spent every day in a protected hospital room, the pregnancy might still have ended the same way."After the call, my legs gave out. I sank onto the carpet. Our baby had never had much chance of surviving. But Carlo's cruelty had never been about hurting the child we'd lost. He'd hurt me. The woman wheeled out of surgery after losing her baby, only to be accused of falling in love with someone else. He'd honestly believed that as long as we loved each other, he could dispose of my imaginary lover and we'd go right back to being happy. As if offering to forgive a betrayal t

I didn't go to any of the properties in Carlo's name.I went to my own private apartment, a place nobody knew about and nobody could take from me.The next morning, I took a long, hot shower, put on a sharp tailored suit, and arrived at my office on time.I was one of the top attorneys at one of Ravenport's leading law firms.Even without the title of Donna, my name carried weight on Kingsley Street. Why on earth did Carlo think I couldn't bear to lose him?At exactly three that afternoon, my phone vibrated.A message from the family hospital's genetic testing department lit up the screen. The paternity report was three pages long.My fingertips went cold as I scrolled to the final page."Genetic analysis supports Carlo Moretti as the biological father of the embryo from which the submitted sample was taken."My eyes burned.I hadn't betrayed him. Not once. There it was in black and white. The proof I'd been begging him to believe.I locked the screen and took a sip of my
