LOGINCHAPTER 4: I DIDN'T PUSH HER
ZARA: I stood at the corner, watching Rider type furiously on his phone. Then the memories of our days together flooded my head. Three years ago, I was just an Omega from a small pack, a girl with parents who had no ranks and even less money. Rider had been my hero then. We met during the full moon festival and when he found out I was his mate, he’d picked me up, paid for my college, and treated me like I was the only thing that mattered in his world. I was his princess, his everything. Then, six months ago, Serena walked into the picture. She showed up with a sob story about a divorce from an "abusive marriage," and Rider fell over himself to accommodate her. Being the daughter of a powerful Alpha, she fit his world way better than I did. He claimed Robert, Zara's brother, died several years ago trying to save him from the Rogues. “I owe her, Zara,” he always told me. I’d heard that line so many times it sounded like a broken record. I sighed, then took another step toward the door, Serena, playing the part of the fragile victim perfectly, lunged forward and grabbed my wrist. "Zara, please! Don't leave him because of me!" she wailed again, her voice cracking with fake desperation. "I'm so sorry! If I’m the problem, I’ll go!" I felt a surge of pure, unfiltered irritation at her act. Who was she fooling? I just jerked my arm back to get away from her touch. The moment my skin left hers, something calculative flashed across her face, and she went down like she’d been hit by a truck. THUD. She hit the floor hard, instantly clutching her ankle and screaming like she was losing a limb. "Zara! I know you're angry, but you didn't have to push me that hard! You knew my ankle was already sprained!" Rider quickly put the phone in his pocket and was at her side in a heartbeat. He didn't even look at me; his eyes were glued to her, his face twisted in panic. "Serena! Are you okay? What happened?" Serena was sobbing now, real, hot tears streaming down her face. "It hurts so bad, Rider! I was only trying to stop her… I didn't want her to leave in anger!" Rider stood up slowly, his shadow stretching long and menacing across the floor. He lifted his gaze to mine, and the look in his eyes was pure ice. It wasn't the look of the man who used to kill to protect me. It was the look of a stranger. "How can you be so mean, Zara?" he roared. "There’s a limit to these tantrums! Serena was rushing to the temple to witness our bonding ceremony when she had her ankle sprained. You didn't even appreciate it. Now she's begging you not to leave your home and you pushed her? How heartless can you be?" "I didn't push her, Rider!" I yelled back, my voice shaking with fury. "She grabbed me! I just pulled my arm away! She’s faking it!" Rider gestured to the floor, where Serena was rocking back and forth. "Then explain this! Why is she on the floor? Why is she in pain? You think she’s putting on an act?" Serena let out a pathetic whimper. "Why would I push myself down? I already have a sprained ankle, Zara. Why would I want to hurt myself more?" "To get his attention!" I snapped, gesturing at Rider. "You’ve been doing it for six months!" "Enough!" Rider’s voice sounded like a whip crack. He stepped toward me, his Alpha aura pressing down on me so hard I could barely breathe. "Apologize to her. Right now. Or I’m having the guards throw you in the dungeon." My blood went cold. The dungeon. It wasn't just a prison; it was a black, windowless hole beneath the pack house that smelled like damp earth and rot. I’d had a phobia of the dark since I was a kid, and Rider knew that. He used to sit outside my bedroom door for hours just to make sure I felt safe. And now? Now he was using my greatest fear as a weapon against me, just to make his little friend feel better. I looked at him, searching his face for even a hint of the guy who’d broken a guy's leg in college just for calling me a "worthless mutt." But that guy was gone. "Rider, please," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I’m innocent. I swear on my wolf, I didn't push her." He didn't blink. He just stared at me, cold and indifferent. I glanced over at Serena. She was looking up at me, and for a split second, the tears vanished. A small, twisted, triumphant smile pulled at the corner of her lips. She had won. "Five seconds, Zara," Rider counted down, his hand hovering over his belt where his comms device was clipped. "Four. Three." My heart was hammering against my ribs like a frantic animal. If I went to the dungeon, I wouldn't come out the same. I knew it. The darkness would swallow me whole. But if I apologized, I was admitting to something I didn't do—I was bowing down to the woman who was trying to steal my life. "Two." I looked at the door. It was right there. Freedom was five feet away. But the guards would be here in seconds, and I’d never make it out of the house. "One." I felt my legs give out. I hated myself for it, but I didn't want to die in that hole. I sank to my knees, my skirt pooling around me on the floor. I kept my head down, staring at the polished wood, my hair shielding my face so they couldn't see the hate burning in my eyes. "I’m sorry, Serena," I said, my voice thick with poison. The room went deathly silent. "What was that?" Rider asked, his voice low, testing me. I looked up, my eyes dry, my expression hard as stone. "I said I’m sorry, Serena. I’m sorry you’re such a pathetic liar, and I’m sorry I ever thought you were worth the air you breathe." Serena flinched, and Rider took a step forward, his hand clenching into a fist. "That’s not an apology, Zara." "It’s the only one you’re getting," I replied, standing back up, my legs shaking but my spine straight. "If you want me to grovel, you’re going to have to do it yourself. Throw me in the dungeon and see who will brew your herbal tea every night.."ZARA:Darius stood tall, sweeping his dark gaze slowly from his trembling mother over to the pathetic, petrified wreck of his nephew."Well," Darius said smoothly, his voice echoing off the marble pillars of the foyer, "you can see for yourself with your own eyes that Zara is certainly not wolfless. Mother, do not let Rider drag you down into this mess with him. He was the one who stupidly threw away three years of a dedicated relationship just to chase after a woman who cowardly abandoned her own marriage. Besides, even if I were to step aside and call off my wedding so that Rider could supposedly have her back, I can assure you right now: Rider would drop her the exact second he secured the Alpha title and got officially crowned."Rider flinched, stepping forward frantically. "That is not true! I swear with my own life, I will cherish her and worship her for the rest of my life if she just comes back to me!"Standing in my human form once again after shifting back, I turned to face
ZARA:Rider finally let his chin drop heavily against his chest, completely cornered and utterly defeated as Darius laid bare his entire, pathetic scheme for everyone in the foyer to hear.I took a slow step forward, planting myself directly in front of Rider and looking down at him with quiet disgust. "I honestly suspected there was a selfish, ulterior motive behind your sudden, unexplained desperation to have me back, Rider. But hearing it all laid out like this makes it glaringly obvious: you never genuinely cared about me at all. You want me back because you want to use me to get the Alpha title. And once that is achieved, you would probably discard me again like a piece of trash. Well, our mate bond is permanently severed and broken. So do us both a favor, take your mistress Serena—the true love of your life—and make her your Luna. Leave me the hell alone. I have moved on, I am happily engaged to a man who actually respects me, and I will never get back together with you."Before
ZARA:We had all been so completely consumed by the volatile argument that none of us had heard Darius's security convoy pull into the private estate.Hearing her father's voice, Luna was the first to react. She scrambled up from the Persian rug where we had been drawing earlier, sprinting across the marble floor to latch onto her father's hand. Looking up at Darius with a furious pout, she pointed a finger straight at Rider and Beatrice."Daddy, Rider brought Grandma here just to hurl horrible accusations at Zara!" Luna complained loudly, her voice trembling with indignation. "Rider claimed Zara is his mate, and now Grandma is accusing Zara of being some gold-digger dating both an uncle and his nephew at the same time!"Rider offered a nervous, twitchy chuckle, trying to smooth things over. "Oh, come on, sweetie, it's not actually an accusation. I was only just explaining the situation to Grandma that Zara and I—""What the hell are you even doing here, Rider?" Darius cut him off sha
ZARA:I turned away from their vehicle and headed to where my driver was already waiting. Getting into the car, the heavy luxury sedan slid smoothly to a halt inside the sprawling stone garage of Ambrose's estate. I opened the door, stepped out into the cool evening air, and walked briskly up the grand steps into the mansion. As I entered the foyer, I spotted Luna sitting cross-legged on the plush Persian rug. She was frowning deeply, furiously scratching away with a crayon on a large piece of poster board. Several crumpled, ruined sheets of paper were already strewn angrily across the floor around her. She was so entirely lost in her frustration that she didn't even notice my footsteps until I walked up and gently asked, "Is that a school art project you're struggling with, Luna?"Luna startled, dropping her crayon, and looked up with a dramatic, heavy sigh. "Yes, and I hate it! I honestly don't know why my teacher gives us such stupid, impossible homework."I set my leather tote bag
Stepping off the private executive elevator the very next morning, I made my way down the polished hallway toward the newly assigned suite for the head of the design department. But before my hand even touched the brass knob, my eyes caught sight of a massive, ostentatious bouquet of crimson roses resting right on my doorstep. A small, elegant envelope was neatly tucked into the center of the arrangement, addressed to me in a familiar, sweeping script.I glared down at it with sheer annoyance, picked up the card, and flipped it open. Inside, glaring back at me, was Rider’s unmistakable handwriting: I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOU.The name of the sender wasn't there but I knew this certainly came from Rider.I let out a sharp hiss of disgust, crumpled the card into a tight ball, and tossed the entire bouquet of flowers straight into the hallway trash bin without a second thought. It was entirely laughable. Rider never once bought me flowers once Serena abandoned her marriage and came back t
ZARA:Hearing Darius announce that I was being transferred to head the creative design department instead of being cast aside, I forced my lips into a sweet, composed smile."Thank you very much for the professional opportunity, Alpha," I said smoothly. “I'll do my absolute best to meet up with your expectations.”Darius simply nodded, then gestured that I could leave.Without waiting another second, I turned on my heel and exited his office, leaving Amber sitting smugly in her chair inside. As the heavy door clicked shut behind me, a chaotic whirlwind of conflicting emotions crashed over me. On one hand, I had just received a massive, prestigious promotion to head up the entire design department, a role that truly recognized my creative talents. But on the other hand, the bitter pill to swallow was that Amber was now stepping into my old shoes, working side-by-side with Darius every single day as his personal secretary.Deep down in my gut, I was utterly certain that once Amber settl
