The two weeks of recovery felt like a lifetime and a single second at the same time. Theodore didn't just provide a hospital room; he provided a fortress. He brought me the best doctors, the best food, and, most importantly, my laptop.

While my body healed, my mind went to war. I watched from my screen as Mark’s company stock began to slide. Without my daily management, his managers were confused. His clients were annoyed.

He was a face for the cameras, but I had been the heart of the operation. Now, the heart was gone, and the body was dying.

"It is time," Theodore said, walking into my suite on the night of the gala.

He didn't bring a nurse this time. He brought a team of stylists. They dressed me in a gown made of midnight-blue silk. It was covered in tiny crystals that looked like stars. It was a dress for a queen, not a victim. My hair was pulled back sharply, and my makeup made my eyes look like flint. I didn't look like the woman who had tumbled down the stairs. I looked like the woman who owned the stairs.

Theodore stood by the door, dressed in a black tuxedo. He looked at me, and for a moment, his cold expression softened. "Mark is already there," he said.

"He has been telling everyone that he is about to sign a deal with Titan Group. He’s drinking heavily. He’s very confident."

"Let's crush that confidence," I said.

The car ride was silent. We pulled up to the Grand Hotel, the same place where the anniversary party had happened. The irony wasn't lost on me. As we stepped onto the red carpet, the cameras flashed. The reporters didn't recognize me at first. They were too busy shouting Theodore’s name. He was the "Lion of the City," and he rarely appeared at public events.

We entered the ballroom. The air was thick with the smell of expensive perfume and greed. I saw Mark immediately. He was standing near the stage, holding a glass of scotch. Sarah was clinging to his arm, wearing a dress that was far too bright for the occasion. They looked like people who had won the lottery but didn't know how to spend the money.

Mark was talking loudly to a group of bankers. "Titan Group is the future," he bragged. "The CEO and I have a special understanding. Once we sign tonight, my company will double in value. It’s all about knowing the right people."

Theodore squeezed my hand. "Go," he whispered. "I will be right behind you."

I walked toward the center of the room. The crowd parted like water. People began to whisper as they recognized my face.

"Is that... Evelyn?"

"I thought she was in the hospital."

"She looks different. She looks powerful."

Mark heard the whispers and turned around. When he saw me, he almost dropped his glass. His face went from red to a sickly pale white. Sarah gripped his arm tighter, her eyes wide with fear.

"Evelyn?" Mark stammered. He tried to put on a brave face, but his voice shook. "What are you doing here? This is a private event for business leaders. You don't belong here anymore. Security!"

I didn't stop. I walked until I was standing right in front of him. I was wearing heels, so I was nearly as tall as he was. I looked him directly in the eyes.

"I’m here for the meeting, Mark," I said. My voice was calm and steady. It echoed in the quiet room.

"Meeting?" Mark laughed, though it sounded like a cough. "I’m waiting for the CEO of Titan Group. You’re just an unemployed divorcee. Get out before I have you thrown out again."

I pulled a leather folder from my clutch. I opened it and took out the contract Mark had sent to my office three days ago. It was covered in his messy signature.

"You sent this to my desk on Tuesday," I said. "You asked for a fifty-million-dollar investment. You said your company would fail in a month without it."

The room went completely silent. The bankers Mark had been talking to stepped back, looking at me with shock.

"How do you have that?" Mark hissed, stepping closer. "Did you steal that from the Titan office? Did you get a job as a maid there?"

"I don't work for Titan Group, Mark," I said, leaning in so the people in the front row could hear every word.

"I am Titan Group. I founded it eight years ago. While you were out spending the money I made for you, I was building a world you aren't invited to."

Mark’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. He looked at the contract in my hand, then back at my face. He looked like a man watching his house burn down.

"No," Sarah shrieked from behind him. "She’s lying! She’s just a housewife! Mark, tell them she’s lying!"

But Mark couldn't say anything. He knew my work. He knew my handwriting. He realized that the "Secret CEO" he had been chasing was the woman he had pushed down the stairs.

Suddenly, Theodore stepped up behind me. He placed a heavy, protective hand on my shoulder. The presence of the most powerful man in the family made the air feel heavy.

"Is there a problem, Mark?" Theodore asked. His voice was like a low growl.

"Uncle Theodore!" Mark gasped, hoping for a savior.

"Evelyn is crazy! She’s claiming she owns Titan. You have to help me get her out of here."

Theodore didn't move. He didn't blink. "Evelyn is telling the truth. She is the CEO of Titan. And as of five minutes ago, she is also the woman who has full control over your family trust."

Theodore looked around the room, making sure every guest heard him. "I would also like to announce that Evelyn and I were married this afternoon. She is no longer just a business partner. She is the new matriarch of this family."

The shock in the room was so loud it felt like a physical weight. Mark fell back against a table, knocking over a tray of glasses. He looked at me, then at his uncle, then at the floor. He realized his mistake. He had thrown away a queen to play with a pawn, and now the queen had captured his king.

"Mark," Theodore said, his voice commanding and sharp. "You are a junior member of this family. You are standing in front of your Aunt and the head of your house. Where are your manners?"

Mark’s parents, Lydia and Arthur, pushed through the crowd. They looked terrified. They knew that if Theodore cut them off, they would be homeless by morning. Lydia grabbed Mark’s arm and forced him to stand up straight.

"Do it, Mark," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Do it or we lose everything."

Mark looked at me. I saw the heat of his anger turn into the cold ash of defeat. He slowly bent his knees.

He bowed his head low, hiding his face from the cameras that were capturing every second of his shame.

"I... I am sorry," Mark whispered to the floor. "Welcome back... Aunt Evelyn."

I looked down at the top of his head. I didn't feel the joy I thought I would. I just felt peace. The debt was paid.

"The deal is canceled, Mark," I said, my voice cold and final. "Titan Group does not partner with losers."

I turned my back on him and walked toward the center of the ballroom with Theodore. The music started again, but the world had changed. I was no longer a shadow. I was the sun, and the man who tried to put out my light was now shivering in the dark.

  • HE DIVORCED ME NOW HE CALLS ME AUNT   CHAPTER SIX: THE SILVER THRONE

The sound of the horn still vibrated in my teeth. The silver trees around the cliffside swayed without wind, their metallic leaves whispering a language I didn’t yet understand. The boat touched the obsidian shore with a soft, metallic scrape. The captain, a man whose eyes were the color of storm-lit sea glass, bowed low. "Welcome home, Your Grace. The path to the High Throne is not gentle for those who have lived among mortals."I stepped out of the boat, my midnight-blue gown trailing over black sand that felt less like earth and more like crushed pearls. The cold wind bit at my bare shoulders, but the silver key in my pocket burned against my skin like a live coal. "Who gave that order?" I demanded, my voice sharp enough to cut the purple haze hanging over the valley. "Who called me a pretender?"The captain didn't answer. He simply pointed toward the towering white palace perched upon the distant mountain, where thousands of lights were beginning to flare to life like angry star

The office was pitch black. The only light came from the golden map floating in the air and the glowing key in my hand. Theodore grabbed my arm. His grip was strong and steady."We have to move, Evelyn! Now!" he shouted over the roar of the helicopter outside.I couldn't move. My eyes were fixed on the map. I saw a name written in the golden dust: The House of Valerius. It was a name from old legends, a family that was supposed to be extinct."Is that... me?" I whispered."Yes," Theodore said, pulling me toward the private elevator. "You aren't a common girl. You are the last daughter of the High Throne. Mark’s family were just servants who stayed in your shadow. But the people who burned your home twenty years ago have found you."The elevator doors opened. We stepped inside. As we went down, the building shook. A loud explosion came from the roof. They weren't just coming to talk; they were coming to destroy everything. The elevator hit the ground floor. We ran into the underground

The morning after that , the world was on fire. Every newspaper had a picture of Mark bowing to me. They called me the "Ghost Queen."I was sitting in my office at Titan Group. I was finally in my true home. The cold air of the air conditioner felt good against my skin. I wasn't a housewife anymore. I was a boss.Suddenly, my office door crashed open. Mark stumbled in. He looked like he hadn't slept in days. His expensive suit was covered in stains, and his eyes were wide with panic."Evelyn! You have to stop this!" he screamed. He tried to run toward my desk, but my security guards caught him. They held him firmly.I didn't move. I didn't even blink. "You are trespassing, Mark. Leave before I call the police.""The banks are taking everything!" Mark sobbed, falling to his knees. "Because you canceled the deal, they think I’m a fraud. They are taking the house. They are taking my parents’ cars. We have nowhere to go!"I leaned forward. "You had a home, Mark. You had a wife who loved y

The smell of bleach and medicine was the first thing I noticed. My eyes felt heavy, like they were glued shut. When I finally opened them, the ceiling was a flat, boring white.Everything hurts. My ribs felt like they were on fire. My head throbbed with every heartbeat. I tried to move my hand, but it was taped to a thin tube."Don't move," a deep voice said.I turned my head slowly. Theodore was sitting in a chair by the window. He wasn't looking at a phone or a book. He was just watching me. He looked powerful even while sitting still."Where is Mark?" I whispered. My throat felt like it was full of sand."Mark is celebrating," Theodore said. His voice was cold. "He told the police you fell because you were drunk. He is at home right now, throwing a party for his new 'family'."The memory of the stairs came rushing back. I remembered the pain. I remembered the sound of my husband’s voice as he pushed me. I felt a tear run down my face, but I wiped it away. I didn't want to cry anymo

  • HE DIVORCED ME NOW HE CALLS ME AUNT   CHAPTER ONE

I stood at the back of the room, holding a glass of champagne that had gone warm. Tonight was our seventh anniversary and my twenty-ninth birthday. The room was filled with the most powerful people in the city, all here to celebrate the "Empire" Mark had built.I looked at Mark. He was standing in the center of a circle of investors, looking handsome and confident. He didn't look at me once. He never did. For seven years, I was the ghost in his machine. I wrote the contracts he signed. I analyzed the markets he conquered. I stayed up until 3:00 AM fixing his mistakes so he could wake up and look like a genius."Still hiding in the corners, Evelyn?"I turned to see my mother-in-law, Lydia. She was wearing a diamond necklace that I had bought for her last Christmas. She looked at my stomach with a look of pure disgust."Five years of marriage and still no heir," Lydia hissed. "Mark is a king. A king needs a son. But you? You give him nothing but paperwork."I felt the familiar sting in
