The doctor stepped through the swinging doors of the emergency unit, mask dangling from one ear, eyes heavy with the kind of exhaustion that came from delivering bad news. Olivia was already moving toward him before her mother could stop her.

“Doctor…” Her voice cracked. She swallowed hard and forced the words out. “My father… is he okay?”

The man removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. The fluorescent lights above them hummed, cold and indifferent.

“Mr. Carter suffered a massive myocardial infarction,” he said carefully. “A severe heart attack brought on by extreme emotional stress. We managed to stabilize him, but his condition remains critical. The next twenty-four hours will determine everything. If his heart fails again…” He paused, choosing his words with professional restraint. “There may be very little more we can do.”

Olivia’s legs buckled. The polished hospital floor seemed to tilt beneath her. Her mother caught her under the arms, holding her upright with surprising strength.

“He’s alive,” the doctor added, softer now. “That is something. But I need you both to prepare yourselves.”

Olivia stared past him at the closed doors of the ICU. Behind that glass, her father Richard Carter, the man who had carried her on his shoulders when she was six, who had worked overtime so she could attend university, who still called her every Sunday even after she married into the Ashford name lay fighting for every breath.

She nodded once, woodenly, because speaking felt impossible.

They allowed her five minutes at the observation window.

Olivia stood with her palms pressed against the cool glass, forehead nearly touching it. Inside the room, machines blinked and hissed. Her father’s face was ashen, oxygen mask covering most of it, tubes snaking from his arms. He looked smaller somehow. Fragile.

Guilt rose in her throat like bile.

She remembered the last conversation they had had only three days earlier. He had sat across from her at the kitchen table of the modest Carter home, hands wrapped around a mug of tea, eyes full of quiet worry.

“If your marriage ever makes you lose yourself, Olivia,” he had said, “come home. You’ll always have a place with us. No questions. No judgment.”

She had smiled and told him everything was fine. She had lied because she still believed she could fix it that if she just tried harder, loved more quietly, asked for less, Lucien would eventually see her.

Now the divorce papers were signed. The ring was in her bag. And her father was dying because of the stress she had brought into their lives.

Tears slipped down her cheeks without sound. She did not sob. The grief was too deep for noise. It sat heavy in her chest, pressing against her ribs until breathing hurt.

“Dad,” she whispered against the glass, “please don’t leave me too. I can’t… I can’t lose you both on the same night.”

Her mother stood a few feet behind her, silent, one hand resting on Olivia’s shoulder. The older woman’s eyes were red, but she held herself together the way mothers sometimes do when their children are breaking.

Olivia closed her eyes. The memory of Lucien’s cold voice from earlier that evening mixed with the steady beep of the heart monitor. Two different kinds of endings. Both of them hers.

Outside the hospital, a black luxury sedan glided into the visitor parking lot and came to a stop beneath a streetlamp.

Lucien Ashford stepped out, the night air cool against his face. He buttoned his suit jacket with deliberate precision, as though the small action could restore the control that had begun to slip since Olivia walked out of his office.

His assistant hovered near the open car door. “Should I inform Mrs. Carter that you’ve arrived, sir?”

“No.” The word was immediate and sharp.

Lucien’s gaze lifted to the third-floor windows of the ICU wing. He could not see her clearly from this distance, but he knew she was there. He had seen the way her shoulders shook when she received the news. He had watched her crumple.

“I am not here for her”, he told himself. I am here because the paperwork is not yet final. Until the divorce is processed, Richard Carter remains legally connected to the Ashford name. Appearances matter.

The justification felt thin even to him.

He remained beside the car, hands in his pockets, eyes fixed on the building. Somewhere behind those windows Olivia was crying for a father who might not survive the night. Something tight and unfamiliar twisted in Lucien’s chest. For one reckless second he almost started walking toward the entrance.

He stayed where he was.

His phone vibrated.

Eleanor’s name lit the screen. Lucien answered on the third ring, keeping his voice low.

“Why are you at that hospital?” she demanded without greeting.

“Richard Carter is still legally my father-in-law until the divorce is finalized,” he replied evenly. “It would be inappropriate for the Ashford family to appear completely indifferent.”

A cold laugh came through the line. “Indifferent? Lucien, that family has taken enough from us. More than enough.”

The words hung between them. Lucien said nothing.

Eleanor continued, voice laced with old bitterness. “Do not let sentiment cloud what we planned. You know what they did. You know what they cost this family.”

He ended the call without responding.

“Taken enough.” The phrase echoed. He had heard versions of it for years from Eleanor, from Victor, from the carefully curated stories of the past that had shaped his childhood. Yet standing here, watching the hospital lights, the certainty he usually felt felt slightly less absolute.

Olivia needed air.

The sterile smell of the hospital, the constant beeping, the weight of her mother’s quiet grief.it all pressed too heavily. She stepped outside through a side exit, arms wrapped around herself against the night chill.

She saw him almost immediately.

Lucien stood beside the black sedan, tall and still, the streetlamp casting a sharp shadow across his face. For one fragile heartbeat, something warm and foolish rose in Olivia’s chest. He had come. Maybe the coldness in the office had been temporary. Maybe he still cared enough to be here when her world was collapsing.

She walked toward him slowly.

Lucien turned at the sound of her footsteps. His expression remained unreadable.

Before she could speak, he said, “I’m only here because my assistant informed me of the situation.”

The words landed with clinical precision.

Olivia stopped a few feet away. The hope that had flickered so briefly extinguished. She forced her lips into a small, empty smile.

“I understand,” she said quietly.

She did not. But she would not beg. Not again. Not tonight.

Something in her posture shifted shoulders a fraction straighter, chin lifted just enough. It was a small change, almost invisible, but it was the first time she had met his indifference without crumbling.

As she turned to leave, the wedding ring she had tucked into her coat pocket earlier slipped free. It struck the pavement with a soft metallic sound and rolled a short distance before stopping near Lucien’s polished shoe.

Neither of them moved at first.

Olivia stared at the diamond catching the streetlight. Lucien’s gaze followed it as well. For a moment the world narrowed to that single circle of gold and stone the last physical proof of a marriage that had already ended on paper.

Olivia bent down first. Her fingers closed around the ring. She straightened slowly, looking at it for several long seconds. The metal was still warm from her body.

Then, without speaking, she opened her handbag and placed the ring inside. She did not put it back on her finger.

Lucien watched the small, deliberate action. Something in his chest constricted. The divorce, until that moment, had felt like a strategic decision clean, necessary, controlled. Watching her put the ring away made it suddenly, uncomfortably real.

Olivia closed the bag, met his eyes once more, and walked back toward the hospital entrance without another word.

Lucien’s phone rang again before she reached the doors.

Victor Ashford’s name appeared on the screen. Lucien answered, turning slightly away.

Victor’s voice was low and edged with satisfaction. “The Carters deserve everything that’s happening to them. Do not forget that, Lucien. Not for a second.”

Olivia had paused near the entrance, close enough that fragments of the conversation reached her. She frowned, the words settling uneasily.

“The Carters deserve everything…”

Lucien noticed her proximity. His jaw tightened.

“I’ll call you later,” he said curtly, and ended the connection.

Olivia studied him for a moment longer, questions forming behind her eyes, then turned and went inside.

Victor’s hatred, she realized, ran deeper than she had ever imagined. Deeper, perhaps, than Lucien’s own.

The hospital corridor was quiet for only a few more minutes.

Then the machines in Richard Carter’s room began screaming.

Alarms blared in overlapping tones. Nurses and doctors flooded the hallway. A nurse ran past Olivia, shouting, “Clear the corridor! Crash cart now!”

Olivia froze.

Through the observation window she saw medical staff surrounding her father’s bed. Hands moved with controlled urgency. Someone called for defibrillator pads. The doctor who had spoken to her earlier looked up, caught her gaze through the glass, and his expression turned grim.

He stepped toward the door just long enough to meet her eyes.

“We’re losing him,” he said.

The words hung in the air like a final judgment.

Olivia’s hand rose to her mouth. Behind her, her mother made a broken sound.

Inside the room, the heart monitor flatlined for one terrible second before the team began working again.

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 25: THE ORDER TO KILL ME

Olivia remained shaken by Richard’s recorded confession. The words played over and over in her mind: “I took you from the hospital because someone had already ordered your death.” For years she had interpreted his secrecy as distrust. Now she understood it might have been the only way he knew how to keep her alive. She broke down, wondering how many times he had risked everything for her without ever speaking of it. Lucien stayed beside her without offering empty comfort. “Whatever happened before you knew the truth,” he said quietly, “your father chose you.” Olivia’s voice was barely audible. “And I spent years thinking he was hiding things because I wasn’t worth telling.” The realization cut deeper than any of the earlier revelations. Lucien examined the old recording frame by frame. Richard kept glancing toward something just off-camera. They replayed the video until Olivia recognized the painting hanging behind him, the same painting that had once hung in her childho

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 24 : THE MAN WHO CALLED FROM MY FATHER'S PHONE

Olivia remained frozen after the call ended. The number displayed on her screen was Richard’s. She checked the call log twice to confirm it. There was no mistake. She wanted to drive to the old Carter house at once. Lucien stopped her. “He specifically ordered you to come alone. That’s exactly why you shouldn’t.” Olivia argued that the caller might know something about her father. “That’s exactly why they want you there,” Lucien said. This time she listened. She refused to walk into another trap without a plan. Before going anywhere they returned to the hospital. Richard remained unconscious. His phone was missing from the bedside table. Someone had physically taken it from the room. Olivia asked the nurse who had last entered. The records showed a staff member signed in shortly before the call was made yet the name belonged to no one currently working in the hospital. Someone had used a stolen identity. The enemy still had access to Richard’s room. Lucien investigat

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 23:THE FATHER WHO KNEW

Olivia left the abandoned hotel with her mother’s confession still heavy in her chest. Every answer she received only opened another door she was not prepared to walk through. Exhaustion and anger warred inside her, but one clear purpose remained. She told Lucien they needed to go to the hospital. This time she was not going because she feared Richard might die. She was going because she needed answers only he could give. Lucien offered to wait outside if she wanted privacy. Olivia surprised him. “No. I want you there.” It was a small shift, but it mattered. She still did not trust him completely, yet she no longer saw him only as the man who had destroyed their marriage. Olivia entered Richard’s room and sat beside the bed. He remained unconscious, the machines rising and falling with each assisted breath. She took his hand carefully and began to speak. She told him everything she had discovered about Jonathan Ashford’s name on her birth record, the paternity test, her

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 22: WHO IS MY FATHER?

Olivia turned around. A masked man stood only a few steps behind her. Her first instinct was to place herself between him and her mother. She demanded to know who he was. He did not answer. Instead he told her she had been searching for the wrong truth. Richard had lied to her. Her mother began to cry. Olivia demanded that the man remove his mask. He refused. He told her the answers would come from her mother, then turned and left the room without another word. Olivia faced her mother at once. “Tell me the truth.” Her mother finally admitted that Richard was not Olivia’s biological father. The words landed like a physical blow. Olivia struggled to understand how everyone closest to her could have kept such a secret for her entire life. Her mother explained that Richard had known from the beginning. He had chosen to raise Olivia as his own daughter without hesitation. “He loved you more than anything,” she said through tears. Olivia asked the next question. “Who is

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 21: COME ALONE

Olivia stared at the darkened screen of her phone long after the call ended. Her mother’s frightened breathing still echoed in her ears. The location the man had given burned in her mind. She reached for her keys. Lucien stopped her. “He ordered you to come alone. Walking into an unknown place without any plan could get both of you killed.” Olivia’s voice cracked with desperation. “They have my mother.” “I’m not trying to control you,” Lucien said, steady and low. “I’m trying to keep you alive.” After a long, painful silence she agreed to let him help on one condition. If her mother was harmed because of any decision he made, she would never forgive him. Lucien contacted the one security officer he still trusted completely. He ordered the man to track their location from a distance without being seen, and he sent the address to a contact who had no connection to the Ashford family. He refused to involve Victor. Olivia noticed the caution. “Why?” “Because I don’t know w

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 20: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE RESULT

The gunshot echoed through the dark storage facility. Olivia dropped to the floor on instinct, clutching the paternity report against her chest. Lucien pulled her behind a heavy metal cabinet before the second echo had faded. The lights remained out. The only sound was their own breathing and the distant drip of water somewhere in the corridor. “Are you hit?” she whispered. “I’m fine.” Lucien’s voice was low and steady. Another soft scrape of movement came from the hallway. Someone was advancing toward them with deliberate care. Lucien understood at once: the attacker was not there to frighten them. He was there to recover the report. He reached for the document. Olivia shook her head and held it tighter. She knew it might be the only remaining proof of the truth. Lucien did not argue. Instead he told her to hide it. While he created a distraction by knocking over a stack of empty boxes, Olivia tore the report free of its folder and slipped it inside her clothing. The attack
