“We’re losing him.”

The doctor’s words landed like a physical blow. Olivia’s body moved before her mind could catch up. She lunged toward the ICU doors, hands outstretched, as if she could somehow reach her father through sheer will.

A nurse stepped into her path, arms firm but not unkind. “Ma’am, you can’t go in. Please”

“He’s my father!” Olivia’s voice cracked on the last word. She pushed against the nurse’s hold, not with violence, but with the raw desperation of someone watching the last solid piece of her world slip away. “Please let me see him! Please!”

Inside the room the monitors screamed in rapid, frantic beeps. Doctors and nurses moved with controlled urgency hands flying, voices low and sharp, the metallic flash of equipment catching the overhead lights. Olivia could only press her face to the narrow glass window, watching the life of the man who had raised her hang by the thinnest of threads.

Behind her, her mother sank into a plastic chair and covered her face with both hands. Silent tears slipped between her fingers. The hallway around them seemed to hold its breath.

Olivia stood frozen, palms flat against the glass, completely helpless for the first time in her life.

She didn’t remember deciding to kneel.

One moment she was standing. The next her knees struck the cold linoleum. She folded her trembling hands against her chest, head bowed, ignoring the stares of strangers and the quiet murmurs of hospital staff.

Her prayer was not elegant. It was broken and honest.

“God…” The word scraped out of her throat. “Please don’t take him. Take anything else. Take my marriage. Take the house, the money, everything I own. Just… don’t take my dad.”

Tears fell steadily onto the floor between her knees. She kept whispering, repeating the same desperate bargains, as if sheer repetition might make heaven listen.

Her mother heard every word. The older woman’s shoulders shook harder. The waiting area fell into a heavy, aching silence. Even the fluorescent lights seemed to hum more quietly, as though the hospital itself understood the weight of a daughter begging for her father’s life.

Olivia stayed on her knees until her legs went numb.

At the far end of the corridor, half-hidden by a corner and the edge of a supply cart, Lucien Ashford watched.

He had not left.

His assistant stood a respectful distance away, voice low. “Should we leave, Mr. Ashford?”

Lucien did not answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the woman kneeling on the hospital floor. Olivia’s shoulders trembled with each quiet sob. The sight of her stripped of pride, of composure, of everything she usually held together tightened something deep in his chest.

His fingers curled into fists at his sides. The movement was small, almost unconscious, but the assistant noticed.

This was not the reaction of a man who felt nothing.

Lucien forced his hands to relax. He told himself he was only observing. That the divorce was not yet final. That appearances still mattered. The excuses sounded hollow even inside his own head.

He stayed where he was.

Minutes stretched into what felt like hours before the frantic beeping finally slowed.

A doctor stepped out, mask pulled down, face lined with exhaustion. “We’ve stabilized him. For now. One visitor only. Five minutes.”

Olivia rose on unsteady legs and entered the room.

Richard Carter lay against the pillows, pale and frail, oxygen mask fogging with each labored breath. When his eyes found her, the faintest smile curved his lips.

The first words he managed were not about himself.

“Are… you okay?”

Olivia’s composure shattered. Tears spilled freely as she took his hand, careful of the IV lines. She forced a smile through the tears. “I’m fine, Dad. Everything’s fine.”

Richard studied her face the way only a father could. He knew the lie for what it was. His fingers tightened weakly around hers.

“Did he hurt you?”

Olivia could not speak. She simply cried harder, forehead resting against the back of his hand. Richard closed his eyes for a moment, understanding everything she could not say.

When he spoke again, each word cost him visible effort.

“I should’ve stopped that marriage.”

Olivia shook her head quickly. “No, Dad. I chose him. It was my choice.”

Richard’s voice cracked. “Love should never make you beg for kindness.”

The simple sentence settled over the room like a quiet truth. Olivia felt it lodge deep in her chest, heavier than any of the divorce papers she had signed.

The doctor appeared at the doorway, signaling that time was almost up. Richard’s grip on her hand tightened once more.

“Promise me,” he whispered. “No matter what happens… don’t lose yourself trying to keep someone who doesn’t see your worth.”

Olivia nodded through her tears. “I promise.”

She kissed his forehead, memorizing the faint scent of the hospital soap and the warmth that still lingered beneath his skin, then stepped back so the medical team could continue their work.

She did not see Lucien as she left the room.

He stood around the corner, close enough that every soft word Richard had spoken had reached him. The father’s quiet protection of his daughter, the absence of bitterness, the simple request that Olivia not lose herself none of it matched the image of the Carters that had been carved into Lucien’s mind for years.

A brief, unbidden memory flickered his own father’s voice, colder, harder, speaking of debts that could never be repaid. The contrast unsettled him more than he wanted to admit.

For the first time, a tiny seed of doubt took root.

He had expected hatred from Richard Carter. What he had witnessed instead was love.

Eleanor Ashford arrived shortly after midnight, heels clicking sharply against the hospital floor.

She found Lucien still standing in the corridor and did not bother with greetings. “You’ve done what needed to be done. Don’t start feeling sorry for them.”

“I’m not,” Lucien answered, voice cold and even.

But his gaze had already drifted toward the closed door of Richard’s room, where Olivia remained. Eleanor noticed. Her eyes narrowed.

“Never forget what that family did to yours,” she said, low and precise. “Never.”

She turned and left without waiting for a reply. The warning lingered in the air long after her footsteps faded.

Lucien remained where he was, the words echoing against the quiet seed of doubt that refused to disappear.

Late that night, after the doctors insisted Olivia rest and her mother had finally fallen into an exhausted sleep in the waiting area, Olivia returned to her father’s bedside.

Richard slept fitfully, hand still resting where she had held it earlier. She took it again, threading her fingers through his, and settled into the chair.

A soft knock sounded. A nurse entered quietly, expression careful.

“Your father asked me to give you this,” the woman said, holding out a sealed envelope. “Only if something happened to him. He was very clear.”

Olivia stared at the plain white envelope. Across the front, in her father’s familiar handwriting, were the words:

“The truth about the Ashford family.”

Her heart began to pound.

She looked from the envelope to her father’s sleeping face, then back again. The paper felt heavier than it should have in her hands.

Outside the window the city lights blurred. Inside the room the machines continued their steady rhythm.

Olivia’s fingers trembled as she turned the envelope over, the weight of whatever secret it contained pressing against her palm.

Olivia left the abandoned hotel with her mother’s confession still heavy in her chest. Every answer she received only opened another door she was not prepared to walk through. Exhaustion and anger warred inside her, but one clear purpose remained. She told Lucien they needed to go to the hospital. This time she was not going because she feared Richard might die. She was going because she needed answers only he could give. Lucien offered to wait outside if she wanted privacy. Olivia surprised him. “No. I want you there.” It was a small shift, but it mattered. She still did not trust him completely, yet she no longer saw him only as the man who had destroyed their marriage. Olivia entered Richard’s room and sat beside the bed. He remained unconscious, the machines rising and falling with each assisted breath. She took his hand carefully and began to speak. She told him everything she had discovered about Jonathan Ashford’s name on her birth record, the paternity test, her

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 22: WHO IS MY FATHER?

Olivia turned around. A masked man stood only a few steps behind her. Her first instinct was to place herself between him and her mother. She demanded to know who he was. He did not answer. Instead he told her she had been searching for the wrong truth. Richard had lied to her. Her mother began to cry. Olivia demanded that the man remove his mask. He refused. He told her the answers would come from her mother, then turned and left the room without another word. Olivia faced her mother at once. “Tell me the truth.” Her mother finally admitted that Richard was not Olivia’s biological father. The words landed like a physical blow. Olivia struggled to understand how everyone closest to her could have kept such a secret for her entire life. Her mother explained that Richard had known from the beginning. He had chosen to raise Olivia as his own daughter without hesitation. “He loved you more than anything,” she said through tears. Olivia asked the next question. “Who is

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 21: COME ALONE

Olivia stared at the darkened screen of her phone long after the call ended. Her mother’s frightened breathing still echoed in her ears. The location the man had given burned in her mind. She reached for her keys. Lucien stopped her. “He ordered you to come alone. Walking into an unknown place without any plan could get both of you killed.” Olivia’s voice cracked with desperation. “They have my mother.” “I’m not trying to control you,” Lucien said, steady and low. “I’m trying to keep you alive.” After a long, painful silence she agreed to let him help on one condition. If her mother was harmed because of any decision he made, she would never forgive him. Lucien contacted the one security officer he still trusted completely. He ordered the man to track their location from a distance without being seen, and he sent the address to a contact who had no connection to the Ashford family. He refused to involve Victor. Olivia noticed the caution. “Why?” “Because I don’t know w

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 20: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE RESULT

The gunshot echoed through the dark storage facility. Olivia dropped to the floor on instinct, clutching the paternity report against her chest. Lucien pulled her behind a heavy metal cabinet before the second echo had faded. The lights remained out. The only sound was their own breathing and the distant drip of water somewhere in the corridor. “Are you hit?” she whispered. “I’m fine.” Lucien’s voice was low and steady. Another soft scrape of movement came from the hallway. Someone was advancing toward them with deliberate care. Lucien understood at once: the attacker was not there to frighten them. He was there to recover the report. He reached for the document. Olivia shook her head and held it tighter. She knew it might be the only remaining proof of the truth. Lucien did not argue. Instead he told her to hide it. While he created a distraction by knocking over a stack of empty boxes, Olivia tore the report free of its folder and slipped it inside her clothing. The attack

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 19: THE BLOOD BETWEEN US

Olivia stared at Lucien after the phone call ended. The possibility that Victor Ashford could be connected to her birth felt almost impossible to process. The room around them seemed too small, the air too thin. She asked the question directly, voice low and unsteady. “Could your father be my biological father?” Lucien was visibly shaken. He told her they did not know that yet the damaged report proved nothing conclusive. Olivia’s anger rose at once. Everyone kept telling her to wait while the truth remained hidden. She asked whether Lucien had known anything about her before they married. He swore he had known nothing about the paternity test. Olivia did not fully believe him. The silence between them carried years of unanswered questions. Lucien examined the damaged laboratory report more carefully. Something important stood out. The document contained no final result, only the request for testing and the identification of the person who had provided the sample. The actual

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    Chapter 18:The Signature Before My Birth

Olivia stared at the Ashford signature on the copy of her birth record. The ink was faded but clear. She held it beside one of the documents they had taken from the abandoned property an old contract bearing the signature of Lucien’s father. The resemblance was unmistakable. “Was it Victor?” she asked. Lucien could not deny the similarity. The loops, the pressure of the pen, the way the final letter trailed off all of it looked the same. Olivia’s voice rose. “Why would Victor Ashford sign a document connected to my birth three days before I was even born?” Lucien had no explanation. He only shook his head. Olivia’s mother, standing in the doorway, grew visibly distressed. She stepped forward and spoke in a low, urgent tone. “Stop asking these questions in this house. Someone may be listening.” Olivia refused to let the truth slip away again. She faced her mother directly. “What happened before I was born? Why was Victor there?” Her mother finally admitted that Victor
