Olivia stared at the sealed envelope in her hands.

Her father’s handwriting steady, familiar, slightly slanted made her fingers tremble. Across the front, in clear black ink, were the words that had already begun to change everything:

“The truth about the Ashford family.”

Through the glass of the ICU window, Richard slept under the soft glow of the monitors. His chest rose and fell in a fragile rhythm. The sight of him so still made the envelope feel heavier.

Her mother appeared at her side, eyes red from exhausted tears. She noticed the paper immediately.

“What is that?”

Olivia kept her voice low. “Dad wanted me to have it. The nurse said he asked her to give it to me only if something happened.”

Her mother’s face drained of color. Fear, not curiosity, tightened her features.

“Don’t open it.”

Olivia turned fully toward her. “Why?”

For a long moment her mother said nothing. Then, almost in a whisper, she answered, “Because that truth nearly destroyed both families once already.”

The words settled between them like a warning. Olivia looked back at the envelope, the seal still unbroken, and felt the first real weight of whatever secret her father had chosen to leave behind.

She needed privacy.

Olivia slipped away from the waiting area and found the small hospital chapel at the end of a quiet corridor. The room was empty, lit only by a few soft wall sconces and the faint glow of votive candles. She sat in the front pew, the envelope resting in her lap.

Her fingers traced the edges of the seal. Every cruel word Eleanor had spoken, every cold glance from Lucien, every unanswered question from the past few years pressed against her mind.

“What did our families do to each other?” she whispered into the silence.

She had spent years believing the distance between the Ashfords and the Carters was simply the natural gap between wealth and ordinary life. Now she was no longer sure.

Slowly, carefully, she slipped one fingernail beneath the flap. The paper gave the smallest resistance.

“Olivia?”

A nurse’s voice called from the doorway. Olivia’s heart lurched. She shoved the envelope deep into her handbag and rose quickly, forcing a calm expression.

“Your mother is looking for you,” the nurse said.

Olivia nodded, pulse still racing, and followed her out. The seal remained unbroken for now.

Lucien stood beside his black sedan in the hospital parking lot, one hand resting on the open driver’s door. The night air was cool against his face. He should have left an hour ago.

His assistant waited patiently. “Sir?”

Lucien glanced back at the glowing entrance of the hospital. For a moment he said nothing. Then, quietly:

“Make sure the Carter family has whatever they need tonight. Private room if possible. Any additional care the doctors recommend. Cover the costs.”

The assistant’s eyebrows lifted slightly. “Should I tell Mrs. Carter it came from you?”

“No.” The answer was immediate. “Anonymous.”

Lucien closed the car door with more force than necessary and slid behind the wheel. He started the engine but did not put the car in gear. He sat there, staring at the hospital lights, fighting the uncomfortable awareness that he was still thinking about the woman who had walked out of his office only hours earlier.

He refused to name the feeling.

Across the street, a black SUV sat in the shadowed corner of a side lot.

Inside, a man in a dark jacket lowered a pair of binoculars and spoke into a secure phone.

“The envelope is still with the girl.”

A brief silence answered him. Then a calm, controlled voice on the other end said only two words:

“Recover it.”

The call ended. The man returned the phone to his pocket and continued watching the hospital entrance, patient and still.

Richard’s eyes opened again just after midnight.

Olivia was at his side within seconds. The moment he saw her face, he read the tension there.

“Did you open it?” His voice was weak, each word an effort.

She shook her head. “Not yet.”

Relief flickered across his features, followed quickly by urgency. He reached for her wrist, fingers cold and thin.

“Listen carefully. If anything happens to me… don’t trust anyone from the Ashford family.”

Olivia stared at him. “Even Lucien?”

Richard’s grip tightened. His eyes held hers with sudden intensity.

“Especially”

The heart monitor’s steady rhythm shattered into a sharp, rapid alarm.

Doctors and nurses flooded the room. Someone gently but firmly guided Olivia back into the hallway as the door closed. She stood frozen, the unfinished warning still echoing in her ears.

She never heard the last name.

A man wearing a visitor’s badge moved quietly through the crowded corridor outside the ICU.

He had stood near enough to catch Richard’s fragmented words. Once the medical team rushed past, he stepped into a side stairwell, pulled out his phone, and spoke in a low voice.

“Richard is trying to tell her.”

A pause.

“We may have to move sooner than planned.”

He ended the call, removed the visitor’s badge, and disappeared into the flow of hospital traffic before anyone could look twice.

Lucien was still sitting in the parking lot when his phone rang.

Victor Ashford’s name appeared on the screen.

“Did Richard survive?” Victor asked without preamble.

“Yes.”

Silence stretched for several seconds. When Victor spoke again, his tone was almost casual.

“Some people should’ve stayed buried with the past.”

Lucien frowned. “What does that mean?”

The line went dead.

He stared at the dark screen, the engine still idling around him. For the first time, something about his uncle’s voice felt slightly off too measured, too final. Lucien did not question Victor’s loyalty. He never had. But the unease that settled in his chest refused to leave.

Hours later, the hospital floor had quieted.

Olivia’s mother had finally gone home to shower and change. Richard slept under the watchful eyes of the night nurses. The room was dim and still.

Olivia closed the door softly behind her, sat in the chair beside her father’s bed, and opened her handbag.

This time no one called her name.

She withdrew the envelope, turned it over once, and carefully broke the seal.

Inside, resting on top of a thin stack of papers, was a single photograph.

Olivia lifted it with careful fingers.

The image was old, slightly faded at the edges. Two men stood side by side on what looked like a construction site, smiling at the camera. One was unmistakably her father younger, healthier, laughing with an open warmth she had not seen in years.

The man beside him wore the same easy smile.

It was Lucien’s father.

Not as an enemy.

As a friend.

Olivia’s breath caught. She stared at the photograph, the sealed papers still waiting beneath it, and felt the ground of everything she thought she knew begin to shift.

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 34: THE HOUSE THAT REMEMBERED EVERYTHING

Olivia arrived at the old Carter house with Lucien at her side. The moment she stepped through the gate, emotion rose sharp and unexpected. She had not returned since Richard moved her away as a child. The overgrown path, the darkened windows, the silence everything felt heavier than she remembered. Lucien noticed her discomfort but did not press her to speak. “I was told to come alone,” she said. “And I decided your life was more important than following instructions from a stranger,” he answered. Olivia was irritated, yet privately relieved she was not facing the house alone. They entered. The place appeared abandoned at first glance, but small details betrayed recent presence. A lamp had been replaced. Fresh footprints marked the hallway dust. Someone had been maintaining the property. Olivia found the room where her mother once kept her belongings. The diary was still there, but several pages had been torn out exactly the entries surrounding Olivia’s birth. Whoever

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 33: THE VOICE ON THE PHONE

Olivia could not speak. The man’s voice on the other end of the line was calm, yet heavy with emotion. He told her he had wanted to speak to her for years. She forced the question out. “Are you my father?” Silence stretched between them. “Yes,” he answered at last. The single word broke something open inside her. Tears rose before she could stop them. “Why did you abandon me?” He corrected her at once. “I didn’t abandon you. Leaving was the only way I believed I could keep you alive.” Olivia demanded to know where he was. He refused. There were people listening to the call, he said. She must not trust anyone completely, not even those who claimed to be protecting her. Anger flared. She had spent her entire life being shielded by secrets. She wanted answers, not another warning. “If I tell you where I am, they will find you,” he said. Before ending the call he gave her one instruction: “Find your mother’s diary.” She asked where it was. The line went dead.

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 32: THE MAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

Olivia could not stop staring at the photograph. The unknown man’s hand rested protectively over her as a newborn while Richard stood beside him. She asked Lucien whether he recognized the face. Lucien studied the image carefully but did not know the man. What he did notice was the distinctive ring on the man’s finger, the same symbol that appeared in one of Jonathan’s old documents. The photograph had not been sent at random. Someone wanted her to find this man. Instead of returning immediately to Richard’s room, Olivia decided to investigate. Lucien enlarged the image. Behind the two men a hospital sign was partially visible, showing a room number. He connected it to an old hospital archive. They discovered that on the night Olivia was born a visitor had been registered under a false name: Michael Carter. Richard had never mentioned anyone by that name. Lucien warned her not to assume the identity was real. The visitor had stayed only eleven minutes before leaving through a

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 31: THE TRUTH RICHARD NEVER TOLD HER

Olivia and Lucien returned to the hospital the moment they learned Richard had regained consciousness. Olivia’s hands trembled as she held the birth record that listed Jonathan Ashford as her father. After everything she had uncovered, she believed she finally stood at the edge of the truth. She placed the document in front of Richard and asked the question directly. “Was Jonathan my biological father?” Richard shook his head at once. “No, Olivia. Jonathan was never your father.” The answer left her stunned. After weeks of following clues, forged documents, and carefully planted lies, she realized someone had deliberately written a false identity into her birth records. Richard saw the hurt and confusion in her eyes and, for the first time, decided she deserved at least part of the truth. Richard explained that Jonathan’s name had been placed on the records to conceal the identity of her real biological father. Jonathan had agreed to help because someone was already searchin

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 30: THE MAN VICTOR WAS PROTECTING

Victor stood in the doorway of the archive, the light from the corridor casting a hard edge across his face. Olivia confronted him at once. “Why did you know about that photograph?” Victor gave no immediate answer. Lucien stepped between them and demanded to know what his father had been hiding. Victor’s voice was low. “You have no idea what you’ve uncovered.” Olivia held up the photograph. “Then tell me who he is.” Victor looked at the image for a long moment before speaking. “His name is Marcus Vale. He is Damien’s father. But he was never yours.” Olivia’s confusion deepened. “Then why is my father connected to him?” Victor finally confessed. Marcus had once been Jonathan Ashford’s closest adviser, trusted by both Jonathan and Richard. Over time he became obsessed with gaining control of both families. He manipulated his son Damien and used him to carry out his plans. Victor claimed he discovered the scheme years earlier. Instead of exposing Marcus at once, he made

  • HE MARRIED ME FOR REVENGE    CHAPTER 29: THREE DAYS BEFORE OUR WEDDING

The archive plunged into complete darkness. Olivia’s breath caught as she realized they were trapped. Lucien moved quickly, searching for another exit. He found an emergency door, but it had been deliberately disabled from the outside. “Who could have locked us in?” Olivia asked. Lucien understood at once. Damien still had access to Jonathan’s old security system. A hidden speaker activated. Damien’s voice filled the room. “You wanted the truth. Now you can have it.” He ordered Lucien to explain what happened three days before the wedding. The lights returned. A countdown timer appeared on a monitor. They had limited time. Olivia turned toward Lucien. “Tell me the truth.” Lucien finally admitted that three days before their wedding he received what appeared to be solid evidence that the Carters had been responsible for Jonathan’s death. The documents showed Richard meeting someone connected to Jonathan. Lucien had believed Richard betrayed his family. That conviction
