ULRICH

ULRICH AND THOREN SET OUT FOR THE WILDS THE NEXT MORNING. By foot, the journey would have taken a month. If Ulrich had flown them, a fortnight. Neither was acceptable to Ulrich, who couldn’t stand the thought of being away from his pregnant mate—let alone any of his mates, if he was honest—longer than he had to.

Luckily, Cecil was a Magi versed in portal magic. With his help, the trip to the Wilds was quick and easy. They stepped through the portal into the hub of the Wilds just after mid-morning. The hub—a conglomerate of shops, residential buildings, and forest—bustled with life. The grounds were slick and muddy from recent rainfall. Ulrich breathed in the scent of the Wilds and almost lost himself to his more primal instincts—ones he’d left behind when he answered Salem’s call only a few weeks ago.

Thoren nudged his elbow into Ulrich’s side. “Remember why we’re here,” the werewolf warned. “You give in to your beast and you can kiss Salem, Cecil, and our baby goodbye.”

THOREN"WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOU’LL BE THE BAIT?”THOREN GROWLED. The werewolf paced back and forth along the gazebo, scowling as he went.Thoren paused near the bridge and punched one of the wooden pillars holding up the wooden structure and swore.“I knew we shouldn’t have left you alone with him. That guy is no good. He wants to use you as bait, for gods’ sake. Anyone who thinks my pregnant mate is bait can suck my dick!”“Thoren, calm down!” Ulrich urged.“Yeah, what he said!” Cecil snapped. “No matter how mad you are, the only ones who should suck that is us.”Thoren was so angry, the joke did little to curtail his mood. He whirled around and growled, “I will not calm down! I refuse to accept the lives of my mate and child being at stake like this.”Ulrich moved between them and attempted to mediate the situation. “I know you’re upset about Salem agreeing to the deal, but I’m sure he has his reasons. Why don’t we hear him out?”“I don’t need to hear him out,” Thoren retorted. The bl

SALEM CECIL AND THOREN RAN INTO THE BEDROOM, PANTING AND OUT OF BREATH. The magi had a paper rolled up in his fist, holding it up into the air like it had a significant importance. Once Cecil caught his breath, he approached the bed and collapsed beside Salem.Salem’s mate turned his head toward him and said, “The king of the Wilds is coming.”“That’s significant,” Salem replied. “Why is he coming all the way out here?”“See for yourself.” Cecil handed Salem the note. “He supposedly has some intelligence he wants to tell you about.”Salem examined the rolled parchment. Just as Cecil had said, the message was from the king of the Wilds, informing Salem of an impromptu visit. He stared at the handwriting and puzzled over the king’s admission. “I wonder what kind of intel it is.”Thoren sat down on the edge of the bed and rubbed at the back of his neck. “I have a bad feeling about it,” the werewolf admitted.“What if it’s another one of his card readings?” Ulrich mused.“But to come all

CECIL AFTER COLLAPSING IN THE GARDEN, A VISION CONSUMED CECIL WITH IMAGES OF A DARK, COLD PLACE. Inside the dreamlike realm, Cecil stood in a dark clearing with a dreary building towering ahead. It took him a moment to realize he wasn’t dreaming—no, this really was a vision. He surrendered to the pull of magic and let the vision devour him.Cecil looked around and took in as much of the scenery as he could.Overhead, the moon glistened in the sky, casting shadows across the tall grass. The overgrown clearing circled around him, wide and boxed in by a forest of towering oak trees. The grass reached up to the magi’s knees. It was obvious the clearing hadn’t been untouched by mankind for sometime. As he stood still and listened, a chilling realization dawned on him—it was far too quiet. His surroundings were deathly still. Where he expected a breeze to stir the leaves high above his head, he found none. Not a creature so much as chirped beyond the line of trees. He turned his focus towa

SALEM THOREN’S SCREAM RESOUNDED THROUGH THE ESTATE —A SOUND THAT CUT SALEM LIKE A SHARP SHARD OF GLASS. Upon hearing it, the vampire’s blood ran cold. He turned to look back at Ulrich, who’d been sitting behind him on the mattress readying another package of blood for Salem. Ulrich reacted in a matter of seconds. The dragon scooped Salem up, plopped him into the wheelchair, and carried both out to the scene of the chaos—where they found Thoren cradling Cecil’s body to his chest like a limp doll.“What’s happened to him?” Ulrich gritted out, his jaw tight as his teeth clenched together.“I don’t know! One moment he was fine and the next...” Thoren stammered, visibly shaken. The werewolf’s breaths were short and raspy, bordering hyperventilation. From where he sat, Salem could hear his mate’s racing heartbeat.Ulrich knelled beside Thoren and pulled him close. “Breathe.”Thoren hesitated, but eventually brought his breathing back to normal. When he calmed down, he spoke clearer. “Ceci

THOREN THE NEWS OF THE PREGNANCY HAD THOREN AND HIS MATES SIMULTANEOUSLY ECSTATIC AND WORRIED.Ecstatic for obvious reasons. A successful ritual meant they were now expecting fathers—and from that perspective, they were on cloud nine.Worried—also for obvious reasons.Even though Salem was taking the antidote, his symptoms abated for a short while after each dose. At the rate they was using it, Thoren would have to return to the Wilds sooner than he expected. He didn’t mind, but his mate’s condition worried him. If they ran out of the medicine, Salem would suffer more.Seeing his pregnant mate in such a vulnerable, sickly position made Thoren ache with sympathy. His wolf wanted to curl up around Salem and protect him whilst his human half wished he could shoulder all of his mate’s pain. What would happen if they ran out and couldn’t get more? The possibility made Thoren’s stomach churn.“How are we almost out of the antidote already? It’s only been three weeks!” he gritted out.Cecil
