Sophie smiled softly and nodded, “Yes.”

Damien didn’t say a word. He simply took her hand, firm yet careful, and led her towards the patio where his so-called family was already waiting. She noticed the faint change in his steps—slower, heavier, almost reluctant. Like he didn’t want to be there at all.

As they walked, Aaron and his family began stepping into the patio too, their faces lighting up like flickering bulbs trying too hard to glow. Sophie’s eyes swept the gathering. Then she saw her.

Jeana.

She showed up like an afterthought, hastily adjusting the white fur around her shoulder. Her short wine-colored gown hugged her body tightly, so tightly her breasts looked like twin oranges, bold and suffocating, as if she was hawking them out of desperation.

Sophie blinked and tried not to laugh.

As they stepped fully into the patio, Belina practically leaped forward. She was too quick. Too desperate. Her heels clicked against the floor like applause she was giving herself for being ext

Belina forced a laugh, a dry sound that barely masked her discomfort. Her fingers fidgeted with the napkin on her lap as she turned to Damien with a tight-lipped smile. “You’re joking, right?” she said, though her voice carried no certainty. “Come on, Damien. Sophie has her own business to manage. She’s not… maybe not equipped for this.”Damien leaned back in his chair, his expression still and sharp. “I’m not joking, Belina,” he said calmly, cutting across her words like a knife through glass. “I’ve made my decision.”Aaron shifted in his seat, tension bubbling under his skin. He leaned forward, fists curled on the table like he was trying to grip onto something that was slipping away. “But I’ve worked hard for that position,” he said, his voice cracking under restraint. “Four years, Uncle. I’ve built relationships, led expansions, stayed loyal. It’s not fair to just push me aside like I’m disposable.”Damien’s gaze landed on him with cool indifference. “Four years, and how many lo

Everyone was watching Damien now, waiting for his reaction.Damien didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to. His silence alone drained the warmth from the air like a sudden winter draft. He blinked once, slow and heavy. Then he leaned back in his chair like a man who had heard one too many foolish things in one evening. His eyes found Belina’s, and for a second, it felt like time itself stopped. The smile she wore dropped instantly. Her breath hitched, and a hand went to her neck, fingers fluttering like she needed air. Then he said it. Calmly. Too calmly.“Why ask about a dead man?”The room stilled. The clink of cutlery ceased. Belina gasped softly, the sound more like a breath of guilt than surprise. She fumbled her words, her mouth parting before her mind caught up.“D…Did I?” She looked toward Aaron, her eyes pleading for some kind of save. “Um… I-I mean… I was asking about my father.”Sophie turned slightly, confused. Her brows furrowed as she looked between them. “Your fathe

Then she turned and walked after Damien, her steps graceful, her presence like an elegant breeze brushing through the patio. But there was something else in her smile. Something hidden beneath her gentleness, a sense of triumph, of knowing she had the upper hand. The others stood in stunned silence.Belina’s throat bobbed as she swallowed hard. Jeana blinked quickly and looked away. Aaron? He simply stared after Sophie, the tightness in his chest tightening more.He had lost her. Not just to another man, but to someone who wielded power like a weapon, and who made her shine like never before.Sophie took her seat beside Damien, casting him a sideways glance as he poured her a glass of wine.“Too harsh?” he asked with a smirk.“Perfect,” she whispered back, lips curled in the slightest grin. From across the room, all eyes were still on them. The dinner had not even begun. And yet the feast of pride, tension, and control was already well underway. The dining room felt like it belonged

Sophie gave him a look that could slice steel. Her eyes narrowed, lips pressed, and her brows shot up like she had just witnessed a lunatic enjoying a private joke.“You’re a psychopath,” her eyes seemed to scream at him. “One who clearly gets a thrill out of baffling me.”Damien chuckled, tilting his head slightly with a grin tugging the corner of his lips. “Don’t explode, angry bird,” he said, voice dipped in teasing. “I was just kidding.”Kidding.That word again. From him, it never felt light. She stepped forward, grabbed his tie without warning, and yanked it down, forcing him to lower his head until their faces almost met. Their breaths tangled. Her voice was firm, daring. “Well, you better quit kidding me. I don’t find it funny, Damien Cavenaugh.”He stared straight into her eyes. Unmoving. A glint of something unreadable swimming in his gaze—like she had struck a chord deeper than the surface showed. His voice dropped as he responded, “Noted… Sophie Cavenaugh.”She scoffed and

Leo’s silence made Sophie frown. Her heart thudded loudly in her chest, and her fingers tightened around the phone. That silence wasn’t just hesitation—it was a wall. One she desperately wanted to break.“Tell me who it was, Leo. Please,” she pressed, her voice low but firm, brimming with impatience and fear.He sighed. That familiar sound of reluctance, of weariness. “I’m sorry, Sophie. I don’t know yet.”“Damn it,” she hissed, her hand slamming against the wall. Her head dropped forward as frustration surged through her chest. “Whoever the perpetrator is could still be lurking. Watching. Waiting. You have to find out who it was. Check CCTV footage, dig into anything. I need to know. Someone planned that accident, and I won’t rest until I make them pay.”She heard Leo’s breath steady. “I’ll do as you said.”“Good. Also…” she paused to inhale, fighting the tremble in her voice. “I need a list of suspects. Think about it – my parents must have had enemies despite doing no harm to anyo
