The heavy oak doors creaked open, and Beta Vegas stepped inside.

Blythe rose slowly from her seat at the long council table, smoothing her skirts with hands that she forced not to tremble. She masked her fear with a cool, disinterested smile.

"Beta Vegas," she said smoothly, inclining her head. "I was told you sought me?"

Vegas offered a half-bow, his hawk-like eyes never leaving her face. "My Lady. A pleasure, as always."

His words were honeyed, but their tension vibrated like a drawn bowstring.

Blythe gestured to the chair opposite hers. "Please."

Vegas sat, folding his hands neatly atop the table. For a moment, he said nothing. I watched her.

Blythe arched a brow. "Are there not always troubling rumors?"
