BELLA’S POV

He didn’t tell me in the garden.

He stood up, pocketed his phone, and looked at the gap in the yew hedge with the quality of a man who had received something large and needed to be in motion before he could think inside it. I watched him and I did not push. I had learned, over three months, that pushing Dominic Hayes toward a thing before he was ready produced the managed version of it, and the managed version was the last thing either of us needed this morning.

I picked up the test

Richard Hayes looking at Thomas Morgan’s daughter in the entrance of his brother’s house.Something moved through his face. Not agreement. Not the warm recalibration of a man won over. Something more complicated — the face of someone receiving a challenge they hadn’t expected to find credible and were finding credible anyway.“He’s in the study,” I said.I stepped back from the door.He came through. He went down the corridor. The study door. His knock.Dominic’s voice. The door opening and closing.I stood in the entrance hall and I listened to the silence of a house containing a conversation I was not part of and would not be part of and did not need to be part of.I went to the library.I sat in the window.I looked at the garden. The fountain. The east beds. The yew hedge at the far end.I pressed my hand flat against my coat pocket. The test inside it.Monday. The doctor. The confirmation. And between now and Monday: Richard in the study, the photograph on the tabloid site, Raine

  • HER MOTHER’S HUSBAND   CHAPTER 120: FRIDAY CONT’D

We went to the enclosed garden at nine. The Friday morning, the October light doing the honest thing, the hedgerows and the beds and the enclosed space receiving us through the gap in the yew.We sat on the bench. Not the ends. The middle. He looked at the rosemary.I looked at the rosemary.I put my hand in my coat pocket. My fingers closed around the test.I pulled it out.I held it for a moment. Then I put it on the bench between us.He looked at it.He looked at my face.He looked at it again. The enclosed garden. The October morning.Neither of us spoke. The fountain audible from here, the specific sound of it in the cold air, running. He reached out.He picked it up.He looked at it for a long time. His face did not do any of the things I had been cataloguing and categorizing since September. Not the jaw, not the managed version, not the warmth, not the underneath thing. Something I had not seen before. Something entirely new.He set it back down between us.He looked at the ros

  • HER MOTHER’S HUSBAND   CHAPTER 119: FRIDAY

BELLA’S POVI woke up before five and lay in the dark and held the knowledge the way you held something fragile — carefully, with both hands, aware of the weight of it.The test was in my coat pocket.I had put it there before bed without thinking, the instinctive move of someone who needed the thing close but not visible, not on the bedside table or the desk where it could be seen. In the pocket. Against my side.I pressed my hand flat on my stomach.Nothing felt different. That was the strange part — nothing in my body had announced itself, nothing had changed in the physical landscape of the morning. The same ceiling, the same October dark outside, the same fountain sound drifting up from the garden.Everything the same.Everything different.I thought about telling him.I rehearsed it, the way you rehearsed things at four in the morning when sleep had made itself unavailable — the words, the arrangement of the sentences, the version of the conversation that produced the least dama

  • HER MOTHER’S HUSBAND   CHAPTER 118: THE HEARING CONT’D

My mother was in the entrance hall when we came through the door. She had been waiting — not the pacing kind, not the anxious kind, the deliberate waiting of a woman who had decided that being present when we came back was the thing she could give. She looked at my face. She read it.“It held?” she said.“It held,” I said. She exhaled. The real exhale, the full release of something she had been holding since October fourteenth two years ago, since the phone call, since the we’ll talk tonight that hadn’t had a tonight. She put her hand over her mouth. One second. Then she took it away. She looked at the ceiling.“Thomas,” she said.To him. To wherever he was. The specific private address of a woman speaking to a person who was not in the room and was always in the room.I watched her.Dominic watched her.She lowered her eyes. She looked at us both. She straightened.“Dinner,” she said. “I’ve been cooking since eleven. Come in.”The specific weapon of her hospitality deployed in the di

  • HER MOTHER’S HUSBAND   CHAPTER 47: THE EAST BEDS CONT’D

The space beyond the yew was — I stopped. Not the garden I had been looking at from the window. Not the formal beds, the fountain, the well-maintained structure of a professional garden. A different thing. Smaller, enclosed on three sides by the yew hedge, the fourth side open to the meadow grass t

  • HER MOTHER’S HUSBAND   CHAPTER 27: SEES EVERYTHING CONT’D

I was acutely, completely aware that this was true. One of us needed to take the step that broke the geography of the junction and returned the corridor to a corridor, a functional passage between rooms, a domestic thoroughfare, the kind of space you moved through rather than occupied. One of us n

  • HER MOTHER’S HUSBAND   CHAPTER 5: THE MOVIE

BELLA'S POVI should have walked away the moment I heard the sound. That was the smart thing to do. The right thing. The thing any normal person would have done, turned around, gone back to their room, closed the door, pretended they'd heard nothing. But I have never, apparently, been particularly

  • HER MOTHER’S HUSBAND   CHAPTER 4 : MY MUM HUSBAND IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

I looked at my phone. It was Jennifer, my friend. But Jennifer wasn't hearing me, in fact, the call kept cutting out. Neither of us could hear each other properly. The call ended.I dropped the phone in frustration and headed to the bathroom to take a bath. The bathroom was absolutely gorgeous. Mar
