Harper Bennett hated Ryker Blackthorn throughout her entire student life. He was the textbook definition of a bully, with a heart as cold as ice. For four long years, he was her nightmare. But despite his actions, why did she still harbor feelings for him? Beneath the surface lies a story of unexpected twists. When their paths cross again, it's a tale of secrets, sparks, and a journey that will challenge everything Harper thought she knew about. Especially, when he told her that what he did was all for her...because he likes her. "From the moment I laid my eyes on you, I knew you were mine."

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Graduation day had finally arrived, and the air was charged with excitement and anticipation.

As I stood in line with my cap and gown, my heart raced, and my palms grew damp. It wasn’t the prospect of leaving college that made me nervous and happy at the same time; it was the fact that I would finally get to live my life without fear, and anxiety...and without my nightmare.

I had avoided him as much as possible during all those days but today, it seemed impossible to escape him. The ceremony was small, and everyone was gathered in the same place. I could feel his presence behind me, and I could feel his eyes burning a hole in the back of my head.

Trying to stay composed, I glanced around, looking for a friendly face in the crowd. I spotted my best friend, Emily, and gave her a weak smile. We would finally graduate together. Emily had always been there to support me, and today was no different. She mouthed reassuring words, reminding me to stay strong as she tilted her cap and winked at me.

The Dean’s voice boomed over the loudspeaker, announcing the commencement of the ceremony.

I took a deep breath, and the line of graduates began to move. I stepped forward, inching closer to the stage, and that’s when I felt it – a light brush against my arm. I turned my head slightly and found myself face-to-face with Ryker.

His intense blue eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, I froze. I could see a hint of something in those eyes, something different from the usual defiance. Maybe it was nerves, maybe it was regret, or sadness but I couldn’t dwell on it for long. I hastily looked away.

As we continued to inch forward in line, the fear that had gripped my heart began to subside, replaced by strange mixed emotions. Graduation day was supposed to be about celebrating our achievements, and I couldn’t let Ryker’s presence ruin it for me. I straightened my posture, held my head high, and decided that today, I would face my fear head-on and make the most of this momentous day.

After the small celebration outside, I happily returned home with my parents. Emily also celebrated with her parents and since we were neighbors, she didn’t go straight home but came to my room.

She flopped onto my bed, groaning in exhaustion. I immediately changed into a comfortable red shirt and soft shorts.

Emily startled me with her laugh. “I just remembered that I laughed so hard at Charlotte’s ‘valedictorian rap’ during the after-party,” she exclaimed, her laughter bubbling up again. “Did you see her trying to imitate Mr. Johnson’s monotone voice? It was so funny!”

I chuckled, taking a seat on the edge of my bed. “Charlotte’s a riot,” I agreed.

Emily’s laughter faded as she glanced at me, a touch of concern in her eyes. “Anyway, Harp. Did you see Ryker after the ceremony?”

I looked at her confused. “I didn’t. I was avoiding him, right?” I had deliberately tried to avoid Ryker during the ceremony, not wanting to ruin my graduation day with any of his entertaining games.

She sighed, her expression turning serious. “Well, I did, and something was off. Like, really off.”

“What do you mean?”

Emily hesitated for a moment as if choosing her words carefully.

“It’s hard to explain, but he looked... different. There was this weird look in his eyes, almost like he was... regretful or something. And he didn’t have that tough-guy swagger he usually has. I also noticed he was staring at you, really like his eyes followed you like a surveillance camera.”

“Ryker Blackthorn, the guy who has been a constant thorn in my side throughout those years with unyielding arrogance was staring at me is not new to me, Em. He might be scheming to continue his evilness towards me.” I told her with a sigh.

My heart raced, the memory of Ryker’s piercing eyes still etched vividly in my mind. Those eyes, like blue sapphire, held a depth that always made me frozen inside. They were intense, yet impenetrable, masking everything about him, but he had unraveled the layers of my soul with just one glance. It was as if he could see through the carefully constructed mask I wore, stripping away the armor I had built to protect myself from... him.

“Do you think he’s up to something?” she asked, ripping my thoughts away from him.

My mind was racing with possibilities. Ryker had always been relentless in his pursuit to make my life miserable.

“I don’t know, Em,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. “But I can’t shake off the feeling that something has changed. Something big. But what could have caused this sudden shift in his behavior?”

She gasped, turning to face me. “Is it possible that he has finally realized the consequences of his actions?”

I scoffed. “He had four long years to acknowledge all the pain he caused me, Em. That man never understands the concept of realization.”

“I suppose you’re right,” Em conceded, her voice tinged with sadness. “But part of me wants to believe that people can change, that they can learn from their mistakes.”

Part of me wanted to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for redemption. Maybe Ryker had finally realized the weight of his actions and the pain he had caused me. But deep down, I knew better. I knew that hoping for change from someone like him was hopeless.

I shrugged, unable to suppress a bitter chuckle. “Maybe in some parallel universe, they can,” I replied, my tone dripping with doubt. “But in our reality, he’s proven time and time again that he’s incapable of genuine remorse.” I felt like crying all of a sudden but I controlled myself. Not in front of Emily again.

Em’s gaze lingered on me for a moment before she nodded with sympathy in her eyes.

“I guess I just hoped for a different outcome this time,” she admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “For your sake.”

The wounds he had inflicted ran deep, leaving scars that I thought no amount of time could erase. The pain was etched into my very being. That pain was a constant reminder of the heartache he had caused me.

Chapter 2
The campus was droned with activity as students rushed to their classes. I could feel the students’ excitement, but here I was, so nervous. I inhaled and exhaled, trying to calm the fluttering butterflies in my stomach. My eyes darted nervously around the campus. I was on my way to my first class, clutching my books tightly and trying to find the place and blend in with the crowd when suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned to find a man towering over me, smirking and exuding an air of superiority. His blue eyes were piercing. His perfectly styled dirty blond hair accentuated his chiseled jawline, adding to his overall aura of confidence. His t-shirt hugged his broad shoulders as he crossed his arms, emphasizing his powerful presence.“What do we have here?” he said, his voice dripping with arrogance. “You look like a lost little lamb wandering into the lion’s den.”Ignoring his tone, I flashed him a smile, my eyes blinking rapidly. I was new to this school, and maybe I coul

I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. Perhaps, I was just imagining things, right? So I dared look back, and the figure was gone. I chuckled nervously. See? Nobody.I let out a relieved sigh, feeling a bit silly for even thinking it was Ryker in the first place. “Wow, Harper, you really need to forget about him,” I muttered to myself, shaking my head.Standing up, I convinced myself it had just been a trick of the light or my overactive imagination playing tricks on me and left the place.“Good morning, Joselito,” I greeted him with a smile as he opened the glass door for me. “Hope you’re doing well today.”Joselito returned my smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he nodded. “Morning, Harper! Another day in paradise, you know.” He said as he handed me the sealed takeout coffees. He had been working as a guard in this building for three years now.I chuckled. “Thank you. You never miss this.”“Never in these two years.” He replied with a boyish grin.As I walked towa

Chapter 4
The school hallway was bustling with students during the lunch break and at the center of the chaos was Ryker. I stood at my locker, searching for a book I needed for my next class. My long, chestnut hair cascaded over my shoulders as I concentrated on my task. Wearing my hair that way made me feel sheltered from the chaos. I found the book and immediately shut the locker only to get startled by Ryker leaning on behind the door, causing me to jump and drop my books. They scattered on the floor, my fragile confidence shattering along with them.“Oops, clumsy Harper,” Ryker sneered, a malicious grin on his face. “Always dropping things, aren’t you?”I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment, and my heart raced. I knew this was coming. I bent down to pick up my fallen books. “Why do you do this, Ryker? What have I ever done to you?”Mason and Jake exchanged grins, waiting for the usual cruel retort.Ryker leaned in closer to me, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Oh, Harper,” he taunted

Chapter 5
I excused myself casually from the group when I saw Ryker sit down in my peripheral vision. I could feel the group’s curious eyes on me.“I will call Emily,” I told them. “Be right back.”As I walked away, I released my breath slowly. I thought I’d worn my confidence on full display, but his mere presence knocked that off in a second. And it was strange how his presence still had the power to stir up a whirlwind of emotions within me.“Come on, Emily. Where on earth are you?” I muttered under my breath, my impatience growing with each passing second.I impatiently tapped my foot as the phone rang on the other end. I glanced over my shoulder and looked around me. I went behind a big tree. Hugging myself tightly, I wrapped the long coat around me as if it were a protective shield against the emotions that threatened to overwhelm me.I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm the racing of my heart as I leaned against the tree’s rough bark. The call directed me to a voicemai

Chapter 6
Looking at my reflection in the mirror, my eyes were red from the recent tears I’d shed. I didn’t know how I had managed to make it home safely, but I was relieved to find myself home unharmed. However, my emotions were tangled in a web of conflicting feelings.I was scared. It wasn’t the fear of Ryker’s presence alone; it was the fear of my own vulnerability when I was around him. I wasn’t sure how I might react to his actions, his words, or even to his mere proximity that left me on the edge. And then there was the kiss. That stolen, forced kiss that had ignited a storm of conflicting emotions in my heart. Despite my apprehensions and the walls I had strongly built to guard my heart, I couldn’t deny the truth that...that I had liked the kiss. The way his lips had pressed against mine, the electricity that rocked my core, and the depth of longing in his eyes when he stared at me had all stirred something unexpected within me.“No, Harper. Don’t be naive,” I admonished myself. “This m

Chapter 7
I couldn’t decide whether to feel relief or anxiety at his unexpected appearance. Silence lingered, punctuated only by the distant hum of traffic and the soft glow of streetlights. When I noticed he was still holding my arm, I pulled my arm back as if it had been burned. I saw how his jaw clenched as he watched my reaction.“What are you doing here?” I managed to whisper, my voice coming out barely audible. My heartbeat was loud.“I followed you.”“Of course, how would you be here if you didn’t follow me,” I scoffed, unable to hide my exasperation. His presence was the last thing I needed, especially after the emotional rollercoaster of the evening. His face contorted in frustration.“Just hear me out,” he practically pleaded.I crossed my arms, not budging an inch. “You lost that privilege a long time ago, Blackthorn.”His eyes darkened, and his frustration was almost desperate. “I can explain everything.”My heart wavered as I looked into his eyes. I knew he had always been an enigm

Monday came, and to my relief, there was no sign of Ryker. The weekend had been rough enough, and I needed some space and time to process everything that had happened. Emily, on the other hand, had been quiet following her emotional breakdown, and I was doing my best to support her through it.“Let’s get wasted tonight, Harp. I want to drink.” Her suggestion caught me off guard. “I want to let loose and escape reality for a while.”“It’s Monday, Emily. What if we can’t wake up the next day?”“We can sleep in and deal with the consequences tomorrow. Tonight, we party.”I snorted at the look on her face. She looked so determined to get wasted without caring about the outcome.“Okay, if you say so...” I replied with a small smile. “Let’s do it. It’s been a while since we had a girls’ night out.”..Emily’s eyes lit up with excitement as she raised her glass in a toast. “To an unforgettable night, Harp!”We clinked our glasses together. We let loose, dancing, and laughing.“I want to for

“I believe you want to talk to Emily, Mas,” Ryker said calmly, addressing Mason without looking at him. His cold eyes remained fixed on me, and despite my best efforts to appear unaffected, my nerves were doing a jittery dance in my body.“No,” Emily snapped, “I believe we have nothing to talk about, Mason.”“That reaction tells me how much you miss me, babe,” Mason smirked, walking closer to Emily.“Miss you?” a hysterical laugh followed. I was worried Emily would have an emotional breakdown. No, not in front of Mason. She was visibly upset, her cheeks flushed with anger and hurt. “Why would I miss you? Are you on earth, Mason?”“Let’s go home, Em,” I said as I tried to reach her, but Ryker blocked me.“Let them settle the situation on their own,” Ryker insisted, his voice firm, even as Emily’s loud curses pierced the air. “We have our own score to settle.”I shot him an exasperated look. “Spare me this nonsense, Blackthorn. You don’t understand what’s going on.”“I know that Emily t

His hands around me loosened, and I took that chance to put a small distance between us, my hand stinging from the slap I had just given him. The raw emotions swirling inside me had driven me to strike out, unable to control myself, and now, I stood there, trembling, my breath uneven.Conflicting emotions were like a storm, raging and chaotic inside my heart. How could he say he loved me when all he did was hurt me? I had spent years nursing the wounds he had inflicted, and now he claimed to love me? It didn’t make sense. This was just another one of his mind games. But the vulnerability in his eyes and the emotions in his voice when he said those words made me feel torn because part of me hoped to believe him.He was starting at space, and I could see the mark of my fingers on his reddening cheek.“You think a few words can make up for everything you put me through?” I bit down on my trembling lip. I swallowed hard, my throat closing in. “I will never forgive you, Ryker."He slowly s
