Wade

It didn't take long for me to know that Cynthia was going to be busy with the little present I had gotten for her. I tried to read the headlines again. It was said that her husband was only attracted to men.

I wondered why their choices and priorities had to be so different, and the other person would fool you. I knew that Cynthia and the other one got married because of the inheritance that would be theirs. I haven't seen so many people fighting for one thing at once. It was too low for their father to divide his children because of their inheritance.

I saw it as a selfish thing. While staring at the brutality of the press towards Cynthia, I read that she fought a paparazzi guy because they were trying to get a forced comment out of her.

I exhaled. Knowing that it was far from over. She was going to make a move, if not through her, her mother, and her foolish brother. It was sad that they had no say on their own, which makes it easy at times, just as it was easy to tip the journalist on one of them.

I went to the bar as quickly as I could because that's the appearance I was keeping. I needed to keep up with that face for as long as I could. That was how I met Marianna, and it was only fair that I had a daily job to attend to. Even when the bar was at its best at night.

Marianna

After the last incident, Wade was still going to his usual daily job, and something inside me didn't sit well with all of that. I wanted to help, but I knew that he wasn't going to let me, so it was best that I do this alone. My family had a habit of holding secret meetings in the library. I knew that I needed to muster the courage to find a place among them. The question was: were they ready to listen to me?

"What are you doing here?" My father asked if they glared at me, ready to speak, but they knew better than to speak in the presence of Grandpa.

"I came to speak to grandpa about something." My grandfather turned his head to me with a smug smile. This was something he liked—granting favour at the expense of your life. "I am married now, and I would like you to give my husband a position in the company."

"What?!!" Antonia exclaimed, but I didn't give her any kind of attention. It was bold of me to ask such a question, and I expected the reaction from them. While fiddling with my hands, my legs were weak in fear.

I was taking Wade's advice. If I needed to survive in this family, I needed to stand my ground.

"Why should I do that?" His eyes were no longer on me but on the Daily Post newspaper that was on his lap.

"Because it will be the best decision you will ever make. Wade has ideas and the will to excel in any field."

"Grandpa! You can't possibly be considering that." Cynthia jumped on her feet, fighting against me. There was nothing I could do to shut her up, but it would be best if I didn't hear anything coming from her. Grandpa ignored her, just as he was to me, every brief second.

"Why wouldn't he? If you are worried that his input to the company is going to be better than yours, then you have a lot to be worried about." I challenged Cynthia.

"Wade is not part of our family. You might consider me, but Wade, no. We don't leave our family's business in the hands of strangers."

"Yet, you can hire Cynthia's gay husband? How nice. You do not have to like it, but he is my husband. He has as much right as I have."

"Do you have any rights?" She scoffed. "From the way, you are pleading for your dear husband; it shows that you are not family."

"That's enough!" Grandpa beckoned to us. He shook his head with disbelief at Antonia.

I'm still staring at her. "As his wife, you are supposed to be a mother to all the children in this house. You antagonise Anna and play favouritism with your own children. You, the father, are not exempted from this. Anna is your daughter, and you play favouritism? Even with your judgement, you will run your family to the ground. Everything you built will be destroyed if you keep going like this." They all covered their heads in shame. Antonia kept glaring at me, and it wasn't the best look I have seen yet.

I have come to realise that she was always going to be the enemy; there was no way she would change.

"Anna? I will give Wade the job. I am giving him the job based on your word. I trust you enough not to bring someone who would jeopardise the company or to think of marrying him. A lower position is always better than a job at the bar. I think he can pull it off."

"Thank you!" I smiled at him. He smiled back with reassurance in his eyes. "I won't let you down."

"You better not."

"Father, this is unacceptable! We do not even know the guy well enough for us to do that. Cynthia mentioned that he leaked private matters of hers to the press. We can't let someone like in '' Dad quietly objected to his decision.

"Do you have proof that he was the one who leaked such information to the press?" Everyone lowered their heads in shame. "If there is no proof, then it means that you are looking for ways to punish Ana. Which I would not take from any of you."

They all dispersed to their destinations. I was about to leave, but Antonia stopped me halfway. "You do not like your husband alive."

She smirked and went ahead of me. I sigh when I hear the locks on the door clicking.

"Antonia, why are you?" I hit the door. "Let me out! Please let me out."

"You're going to wear out that glass." I barely heard Allen as I continued the methodical action I'd been engaged in for the past ten minutes. I'd told him I was here to see him but that was only a half truth. In actuality, I wanted to get my mind off things and get out of the way of Marianna's family. I knew that her father was already spinning tales of how I was trying to drive a wedge between his tight knit family and force Mari to move out. If I stayed at home, I wasn't sure I could control myself and Marianna would not like that. "Wade, please." I looked up at Allen, mid swipe. He had on that exasperated look he usually wore when someone was making things difficult for him. "What?" I asked, setting the sparkling clean glass on the counter top. "You're in my way." He replied pointedly. I shuffled to the corner and watched as he pulled out a bottle of whiskey. "I thought you quit this place for good. You don't even care about the revenue anymore." I clicked my tongue as I re

I was frustrated. I was on the verge of pulling out my hair but somehow, I still managed to keep my cool. Usually, I wouldn't care even if someone was desperate to sabotage their life, but this time was different. This time, it involved Marianna and I was convinced it was my duty to make her see reason. We were standing once again in the hallway that opened into the stairwell. I was not sure how we got here anymore and why we decided to have our shouting match here, but I was too fed up to care. "You didn't want it, so I put up with it. But it's getting ridiculous." I stressed, my voice already stretched to breaking point. Why was she so stubborn in irrelevant matters? "Wade, please this conversation was over a while ago." She replied folding her arms across her chest. It saddened me how she was not willing to see things from my point of view and it annoyed me that I would end up succumbing to her decision. If push came to shove, I would stand by her side no matter what. The only

MARIANNAThe loud burst of murmurings surrounded me and I stood beside Wade, unsure what to say or do. I turned to look at his face, to check for a hint of humor, but there was none. He was dead serious. "Wait... Wait..." I lifted a hand to calm the surrounding chaos but the noise did not quieten down until Wade brought a hand down heavily on a nearby table. A hush fell over the staff immediately as they turned their eyes back on him. "Like I said just now, you're fired. Please clear out your desks." He reiterated, his gaze lingering especially on Mr. Hawthorn. "Wade, I need a moment with you." I said as quietly as I could manage. I expertly avoided the stricken faces of my employees and led him into my office. It was one thing to want to help me but firing my staff was an entirely different thing. "Don't you think you're going too far?" I asked barely waiting for him to shut the door behind him. "No, I don't think so." He took his seat on the sofa directly in front of my work d

MARIANNAI bristled silently within me. It was common knowledge that everyone wanted me out, but it had not occurred to me that they would come so brazenly. If I dropped out of the inheritance race, then I was being basically ousted from the family. I balled up my fists, willing my brain to think of something, anything that could deflect their attention from me. I already knew it would be futile to try and plead my cause, to explain that for a dying subsidiary like the one I managed, five million was an unimaginable feat. They already knew all this, they just wanted an excuse. "Why must she give up?" Wade's voice was like a ray of sunshine on a winter morning. It made me calm immediately. All eyes turned on him but he was already positioned in a fighting stance, his jaw tightly set and his eyes locked on Cynthia across the table. "Stay out of this, Wade." Kennedy snapped but Wade didn't give him the luxury of a response. "I asked, why she must give up?" "Because the revenue..."

I ran my fingers through the lush fullness of her hair. It felt silky and soft, but there were other soft places I wanted to place my hands on, to feel and to caress. I gently angled her neck and swooped down on her lips, tasting the bliss in her tongue and her lips. I bit down on her lower lip, lingering for a moment to get lost in the moment and she let out a low moan. It felt like music to my ears. "Wade." She breathed and the world fell away at my feet. This was heaven. I knew in that moment that there was no use holding myself back anymore, pretending that my gazes didn't linger on her lips, her chest, her waist, acting like I didn't want her so desperately that it hurt. I ripped off my shirt with a ferocity that surprised even me while she circled her arms around my neck and stepped backwards until she was backed up against the wall. I abandoned my vain attempt at undoing the belt on my pants and went for her dress. It was easy to take off because it was strapless and I watc

I stared at Marianna. There was a tiny smile on her face and it was such a beautiful, beautiful thing to see. "I don't want to fight with you. We are a team." She had said when I struck a conversation with her earlier. And just like that, our fight was forgotten. I still thought it was best to move out but it was even more unbearable having to stay angry at her and be given the silent treatment. "Me too. I don't like fighting with you." I had replied. It was difficult to talk with her without wanting to kiss her lips and touch her hair and pull her close. This morning, she had startled awake from a nightmare and I had held her while she caught her breath. After that, it was easier to talk to her. I'd asked if she wanted tea or water and while she sipped from her glass of water, she had confessed that she didn't want to fight me. It surprised me how much those simple words warmed my heart, how much relief I felt after she had said the words. Now, she was sitting before the vanity
