LOGINMILES;
“Thank you, Daddy.” The words followed me upstairs. I didn’t know what was worse: the word she mumbled, or the soft, charged way she had let it out between clenched teeth. I slammed my bedroom door behind me and twisted the lock with shaking fingers. My heart pounded like a war drum in my chest. I could still see her… Michela, my sweet stepdaughter, the girl I wasn’t supposed to want, standing there in nothing but delicate white lace. Her soft curves on full display, the gentle shape of her body, the way the thin fabric clung to her. The image burned behind my eyelids. What the hell is wrong with me? I staggered into the bathroom and gripped the edge of the sink, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My face was flushed, eyes dark with want, jaw clenched tight. Sweat beaded on my forehead. At forty-two, I was supposed to be the responsible one. The man who promised her mother I would protect her before cancer took her away. I had promised to raise her like my own. Not this. Not the man whose sense left his body at the sight of her body. Not the man who couldn’t stop thinking about touching her. I wanted to be her daddy, not in a way society would frown at. “Damn it,” I growled under my breath. Would you blame me? I had wanted to send her out to a college far away from home. Where she would be out of my sight, and maybe only visit home during holidays. But Michela had cried and pleaded it was Rockville College or nothing. She had talked about missing Wills and Words, and when I thought about it, that bookstore had become better with her help. It now had a coffee section too, all thanks to her thoughtful ideas. Letting her go wasn’t easy, just like letting her stay. I turned on the shower faucet and stood under the hard spray of water. My body ached as I tried to ignore it. I could still hear her soft voice calling me “Daddy.” The way it rolled off her tongue, innocent yet loaded with something more. Something dangerous. I had tried so hard to fight this… I had called Tracey to come over the moment Michela got back from school. That was the only way I was going to avoid this temptation. I even threw myself into work at the bookstore, reminding myself every single day that she was off-limits. She was my responsibility. My little girl. But she wasn’t a little girl anymore. No little girl had those sinful curves. Little girls do not possess such delicate, warm skin that I wanted to reach for. The memory flashed again: her curves on full display, the way her body had reacted under my gaze, the shy but hungry look in her eyes when I called her “Kitten.” My hand moved almost on its own. I was already aching for only her. I closed my eyes and groaned. “Michela…” I stroked slowly at first, picturing her turning toward me instead of covering herself. Imagining her dropping her arms, letting me see every soft, beautiful inch of her. The thought of holding her close, of pulling her against me. I moved faster, my breath coming in harsh pants. Water cascaded over me as the tension built. “God, baby… so perfect,” I whispered to the empty room, eyes squeezed shut. In my mind, she was stepping closer, whispering “Daddy” again while she reached for me. The fantasy was so vivid I could almost smell her skin, feel the warmth of her curves pressing against me. My movements turned rough and desperate. Veins stood out on my forearm as I worked myself harder, chasing the release I knew I shouldn’t want. Guilt twisted in my gut even as pleasure built like fire in my spine. She was nineteen. She was my stepdaughter. I was supposed to take care of her, not crave her like this. But God, I did crave her. With a low, guttural groan, I came hard. My knees nearly buckled, but I kept going through it, her name falling from my lips like a prayer and a curse. I sat slowly in the tub, the nape of my neck resting at the edge of the bathtub, legs outstretched while my body still pulsed. I breathed heavily, trying to catch my breath. Shame washed over me immediately, but it couldn’t completely drown the satisfaction. Then I heard it. “Miles!” A familiar, high-pitched female voice called from downstairs. “Miles, honey, are you home?” Tracey. The loud click of her heels echoed through the living room as she moved around like she owned the place. “Miles? I brought wine!” I cursed under my breath and quickly washed myself, splashing enough water on my face to wash away the evidence of what I’d just done. My hands were still shaking as I tried to compose myself. This has to stop, I told myself. But even as I thought it, the image of Michela in her room refused to leave my mind. And with Tracey around, I was bound to witness yet another drama. Michela never liked the idea of me bringing any woman to the house, and when I told her Tracey was coming, I hadn’t waited to hear what she had to say. But dating other women was the only way I was going to stay away from this temptation. I walked out of the bathroom with a towel around my waist as I awaited the dinner drama for tonight.MILES;She looked at me with questions deep in her eyes. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out right away. We stood just an inch apart in the dim cafe, the new furniture still smelling faintly of the new fittings.My eyes strayed to the old couches pushed to one side like they were waiting for something. We both knew there was a lot to say, but right then, something else sat heavier in me. I needed her body to remember who it answered to. I needed the taste of that boy gone.“What… do you mean?” she finally asked. I closed the space between us. “Are you saying…”I lifted a finger and drew it slowly across her parted lips. She went still. I wiped once, then again, like I could erase whatever he had left there. Her breath hitched, sending satisfaction down my spine. A small shiver ran through her, and the satisfaction of it settled even deeper in my gut…. Her body still knew me. Even after everything, it still knew me.“I’m saying…” I paused. “ I’m saying I need to teach your body who
MILES;Punching Nathan and leaving him with a bleeding nose was never part of the plan.Now I just kept one hand in my hair, rubbing through it roughly; my eyes stayed on the road, and the wheel locked in my grip like it had done something wrong. I didn’t look at Michela. Many times I felt her eyes on me, watching me… that steady side-stare like she was finding it hard to recognize the man behind the wheel.I wasn’t proud of what I did to Nathan, or where I did it. Hitting that arrogant boy like that, and in his father’s courtyard was messy, the kind of thing that could turn into phone calls and lawyers by morning. But a part of it felt really satisfying. I’d been meaning to leave him with something that would last him a while, and putting his hands on Michela was the only push I needed to get me on it.My stomach knotted at the thought of it… watching him force his mouth on her… watching her push and him press harder anyway…. I would wait for a thousand lawyers if I had to.I coul
MICHELA;I looked at his face. His eyes were fixed on mine. Was he seriously asking me that after what he had just done?Nathan stood close, close enough that I could feel the heat coming off him. The apology that had been in his eyes a minute ago was gone the minute he saw Miles. He had replaced it with that annoying ugly smile of his, and his shoulders sat higher now, proud, like he had done something worth showing off instead of something he had just begged forgiveness for.“You’re insane.” I shook my head. My brows pulled tight. “I think you need to get your head checked.”“I am perfect, Chela!” The snap in his voice cut the air, shocking me even. “It’s you who should tell me why you just called that man by his first name. Tell me why he’s always so protective of you like…”I did not let him finish. I didn't really care what he thought about Miles and me in that moment. His eyes were glaring like he had any right to get angry even if I chose to kiss Miles before him. A long, ugl
MICHELA; I walked down to the kitchen for a bottle of water. Jemy was already asleep. I guess the day had been a lot and worn her out, and I was not about to wake her. Earlier she had held my hand and told me I could stay as long as I needed. She had said Elena could show me to a room, or I could share hers. She even pointed out the section of her closet with new items… night robes, underwear, whatever I might need if I didn't feel like going back to the house yet. “You’re not even sure Miles is home,” she had said, and as much as I had to admit that, she was right. The kitchen door moved easily under my hand. I checked for the maids, my eyes peering in before my entire body. But the kitchen was empty, the lights had been turned low, and I really needed the water, so I went in, bent to the lower cabinet, and took a bottle from the pack. When I turned, Nathan was in the doorway. Leaning lightly against the frame. Watching me. I swallowed hard. His eyes moved from my fac
MILES; I never knew fixing the upholstery would take almost the whole day. From directing the crew to where each one was to be kept, to moving items, I found myself helping with the entire thing and lost track of time. By the time I finally stepped back and left the rest to the men, it was nearly dusk and I stood, hands on my waist and wondering what I had done. Quickly, I pulled out my phone. I had got no second to spare. My heart thudded when I saw nothing from Michela. Not a text, not even a single call. She had never gone this quiet for this long. I paced the front porch, phone still in my hand. “Maybe she thinks I’m twenty-five,” I grumbled. “Does she want to give me high blood pressure?” I hit her name and lifted the phone to my ear. I was unconsciously praying the line would connect this time. If she had gone to where I believed she had gone, it might be a bit difficult to get through to her. The line rang once, then failed. I knew it! The stupid network at that
MILES; I knew what I did. The guilt of Celeste’s arms around my neck in my office at M&M sat heavy on me as I watched Michela storm into the house, purse and heels clutched against her stomach like a shield. Her shoulders were tight, her steps were too fast like she was warning me not to follow her or even try to stop her. I wanted to call her back. I tried to call her back, but when I opened my mouth, nothing useful came out—only guilt, sitting on my tongue where her name should have been. I had not asked Celeste to curl her hands around me like that. That part was true. What I could not deny was the other part… I had not drawn a clean line when she did it. I was supposed to set a clear boundary. She was my brother’s wife, and I belonged to another. Had I set the boundary, none of this would have happened. Celeste wouldn't have found her way to the house; she wouldn't have had the guts to touch the lapels of my suit the way she did before Michela. I sat in the truck l
