ASHLEY’S POV
I’ve never been on a dinner date before, not even when father had been alive. Though I have had dinner once with Peter, my high school crush back then, I wouldn’t really consider that a date as we had his friends and younger frolicking around us while we dined. It was always rowdy. But tonight’s own would be different.
I sat idly in the back seat of the black limousine. The chauffeur wouldn’t tell me where he was taking me to, said Alex had warned him not to say anything about it to me. I look out through the window of the limo and admired the bustling nightlife of the city. We also passed through the famous Le Marais where hundreds of Parisians thronged its entrance, yet we kept on going.
Alex might be considered ruthless by the outside world, but he wasn’t a kidnapper.
I gazed at my image in the vanity mirror beside me. Donna had volunteered to do my makeup which now needed a retouch because of my nervousness, the heart shaped dropping earrings and its matching silver necklace dazzled its reflection in the mirror. I reached for my lipstick in my clutch purse, reapplied it to my lips and rehearsed a pout.
Donna had spent the afternoon lecturing me on how to look extra attractive tonight, I wasn’t a natural at stuffs like this especially since I spent more time indoors while growing up. I kept tripping and almost broke my ankle while doing the cat walk.
I mumbled a silent prayer on my lips for the night to go smoothly.
The chauffeur pulled over, stepped down and come to my side of the car to open it. The street was quiet, there was a bar down the road but it had no life in it. I sneaked a glimpse peek at the LED neon bar sign displayed at the entrance and my mouth dropped open in surprise.
Le Fouquet’s.
A red carpet led into the main entrance, and there are two doormen positioned there. I walked slowly, minding the carpet as I walked. One of the doormen opened the door while the other ushered me in.
And then I saw him. He was stylishly dressed in a matching blue suit and well-tailored trouser which complimented the dress I wore, a white dress shirt which was unbuttoned in the first two buttons. A boxed package was on his side of the table. He had his eyes on me and stood when he saw me approaching.
Slowly, I sashayed towards the table quietly reciting Donna’s lecture till I got to him.
Chin up, back held straight, straight shoulders, one leg in front of the other, eyes on him, and flash him a beautiful smile.
“You look so beautiful.” He slightly bent his head to graze my cheeks, his lips sending soft caresses to my ear.
My heart missed a beat. It should be considered a crime for a man to be this hot and at the same time have a sexy thick baritone voice.
“Thank you. And so do you too.” I complimented as I sat down on the chair.
Our table is decorated with four lighted candles, two at each sides. An orchestra in the corner played soft classical music, the music intensifying the emotional feel in the atmosphere. My eyes scanned everywhere and I noticed we were the only ones here to eat.
”Why is it just us here?” I asked him
“I bought out the place for today. I wanted us to have our privacy.”
“That’s too expensive, must have cost you a whole lot especially in a place like this.”
“Well… maybe it’s because I have plenty of it at my disposal.” He said with a note of finality in his voice and passed the menu to me. “What would you like to eat?”
I perused the menu and finally settled for carrot basmati rice and ratatouille. He picked the same plus a bottle of Domaine De La Romanee Conti Grand Cru, the most expensive wine in the world, and rang the bell for a waiter who served us our meal.
I was still in awe at everything he had put up for tonight.
“So tell me,” he started as he poured himself another glass of wine, “how did your day with Donna go?”
I laughed. “Donna is really nice, she brought me breakfast in the room and also told me a few stories about herself.” And about you I wanted to add. “I think I like her.” I said instead.
He chuckled. “She’s told the story to nearly everyone she’s met. I knew she was a good choice, and you were going to like her.”
Alex dropped his fork and pushed the boxed item to me.
“It’s a smartphone, specially designed for you. I figured you’d be needing it especially to keep yourself busy while I’m away.
I laughed again, feeling satisfied and at ease and ran my hands on the phone.
Specially designed for me.
He really does know what I want.
“Thank you.” I said loudly and watched him smile in approval. “How did your meeting go?” I asked as I spooned little rice into my mouth.
“We were able to seal the deal, but I still have to travel to Seoul in April to discuss and draw up a project plan with one of our business partners.”
April was still three months away… And we would have ended by then.
I sighed and absentmindedly picked at my food. I wondered if he would miss me when that time comes. My legs suddenly became jelly and my face about to break out in sweat.
“What’s wrong, Ashley? You’re not eating.” He asked, his voice laced with concern.
“I… I think I need to use the restroom.” I responded quickly and clutched my purse, excusing myself.
I didn’t even wait for him to give me directions as I dashed into the unfamiliar lobby. I walked down the corridor until I noticed a door with a sign that read toilet, I went in and head straight for the ladies. I don’t know what was happening to me. It was all happening too fast, so fast. My heart had once felt hatred for this man, and I had even considered him an enemy and a selfish human. But now, the hatred wasn’t there anymore, and in its place was something different.
How would I live through this, because I knew I was headed for an emotional wreckage?
What was I even doing falling in love with someone who only offered the marriage as a contract, someone who would forget me as soon as it ended?
I turned on the tap and splashed a handful of cold water on my face.
I stared at my reflection in the mirror, my makeup was ruined already. I fished some face wipes from my purse and wiped it off completely before going back to meet Alex.
But Alex wasn’t alone.
A slim brunette lady with lips painted excessively in red colour sat in my seat. Her dress was opened down enough to reveal her cleavage which she inched towards Alex. She had the looks of a model.
I can’t make out what they were saying from where I stood, but it was obvious Alex doesn’t look a bit pleased with her. His face was tightened in a scowl and his fists clenched his wine glass tightly as if he would crush it under his weight.
I walked towards them, and the lady noticed me first. She stood from my seat and sauntered in my direction. Her hips swayed professionally with each click of her heels against the floor. She stopped briefly when she reaches me and tilts my chin with a finger.
“Enjoy it while it lasts, dearie.” She whispered and laughed croakily before walking away.
I felt my legs tremble. I had no idea who she was, but I knew she spelt trouble.
By the time I got to the table, Alex was waiting for me and held out his hand.
“Dance with me.”
It wasn't a question. I wanted to dance with him and have him place his hands on me, but all i needed right now was to wrap myself in bed and force myself to sleep.
“I think we should go home.” I said instead.
And he immediately agreed without any extra effort.
ALEXANDER'S POVShe was quiet and didn't say a word to me all through the drive back home. Neither would she look in my direction. I had tried to initiate a conversation, but her replies had been monosyllabic. She had gone up to the room after saying her goodbye as soon as we arrived home, showered and now slept soundly on the bed. I was in the makeshift office, trying to understand what happened tonight. This wasn't how I had planned the evening. It should have been perfect as I had lots of sweet plans arranged for us but it all doesn't matter anymore. Her change in attitude started when I mentioned my trip to Seoul to discuss the deal with Wang Fashion and Jewelleries and got worse with Kelly's presence.Fuck the bitch.I had no idea she'd crash the dinner. Did she come with the intention of worrying Ashley? But why was Ashley worried about being left behind while I travelled? Whatever her reason was, I still needed to tell her who Kelly is and also find out what Kelly was doing at
ASHLEY'S POV“Give me three reasons you did what you did.” Alex's voice thundered inside the room, making the door shake in terror.I stood outside the door, eavesdropping on them through the door hole. Felix was crouched in a fetal position and spurted thick blood with each heavy kick he got from Alex. I had no idea what was going on, but each reason Felix gave was followed by a rib cracking kick from Alex.I might not have liked Felix, but my heart felt pity for him that instant.I peered through the keyhole and saw Alex walking towards the door. I lifted the hem of my green dress and walked briskly to the kitchen, half running as I walked.“Ashley.”I heard his voice first before his heavy footsteps behind me as I rounded the corner to the kitchen. My skin crawled under my clothes and I felt my heart race against time. My lips also quivered with fear as I stood paralyzed to the spot. I had been caught in the act.I hesitated before slowly turning to face him. He took four long st
ASHLEY'S POV"Let's get this over with."Those were the longest words I heard him say ever since his entrance to the room. His hoarse voice which held no sign of emotion rumbled like a distant thunder in the large sitting room that was now occupied by his mother, Jane Jordan - the heiress of Jordan Jewelleries, the dark haired judge who sat by an oak table that had been placed in the center of the room for this purpose, Mother, and I , the I-know-nothing-about-this bride dressed in a knee-length lavender gown and silver stiletto heels, nothing befitting for a bride on her big day.I had been in bed this morning, tossing from the sweet dream I was having when Mother stormed into my room cussing and fussing at the top of her high pitched soprano voice. She looked disheveled with bloodshot eyes, like one who had just woken up from a hellish nightmare."Get out of bed, Miss Lazybones." She screamed as she ripped off my bed cover leaving my skin bare at the mercy of the harsh December winte
ALEXANDER'S POVFuck! She's so beautiful I felt like wrapping my arms around her and pull her in for a breathtaking kiss. I'm pretty sure I looked very intimidating with my cold stares, plus I don't know what she must have heard about me that made her look at me with a bombastic side eye. It's not like I'm over the moon about this whole arrangement. I would never had agreed to this if me becoming the CEO of Jordan Jewelleries wasn't attached to it.Mother was about stepping down as the Chairman of the company, and it called for an urgency in either Michael, my eldest brother and rightful heir of the company, or I taking over. Michael who already has his own family and forged a new career path for himself in the Oil and Gas industry had rejected the offer, leaving me as the only viable option. I loved Jordan Jewelleries, dedicated my existence to growing the business after I finished college, and had always looked forward to holding the reins of the company. But now that my dreams wer
ASHLEY'S POV9:00am.I forced my droopy eyes open and squinted in the brilliance of the morning sun which filtered in through the lush curtains, illuminating the dark corners of the room. A sharp pain throbbed in my temples as I gently peeled back the satin bedsheets from my body, exposing my petite frame underneath. The pain doubled in its intensity as I rose quickly from the bed. I swayed to the left when I tried to set my feet on the linoleum floor, that I had to use the bedpost as a support system. "What could be wrong with me?" I thought as I stared at my full length in the standing mirror.A disheveled figure with eye bags underneath her eyelids stared back at me. My cheeks flushed bright red as the events of last night came back to my memory, and I found myself wishing something more had happened last night instead of the mere chemistry. After Alex had left my room, I had enveloped myself in a pool of my own tears. Ever since Father's death and with no one else to keep me safe f
ALEXANDER'S POVI know I had promised to make things right starting from today. But Mother had other plans for me. I can't imagine the series of thoughts going on in that head of hers. She looked at me, the pain in her eyes silently pleaded with me to choose to stay back."You don't have to go, little angel." I repeated, holding her tiny hands in my big ones. She jerked back at my touch, almost spilling her coffee to the floor.A touch of her is enough to set my ever alive hormones spiralling its way down there. I had promised to take care of her, but how would I do that when she didn't want to be near me. She wouldn't even let me in."I can't. Mother will …"I watched her with interest as she stops mid sentence. What will her mother do? Was she threatened? Did she grow up defending herself from her? Is that the reason she has that wall of protection around her?It seemed there's more to my little angel than she lets me see. The thought of her mother causing her pain made me want to
ALEXANDER'S POVI watched her from where I sat. She frowned and her tiny hands fondled the fray threads of her sweater. The way she sat calmly stirred up my caged i-want-an-escape libido, and my chest tightened in approval. She looked so cute and vulnerable right now.“What’s your favourite colour?” I asked. I’m not sure why I do, as I’m not one to engage in leisure conversations. Especially with a lady.Ashely turned, shifting her gaze to the window. Not that there’s anything fascinating to see, except a sea of white fluffy clouds below us.“I like blue. But I also prefer white and nude colours. Let’s just say I’m a natural when it comes to colours.”A faint musical laugh escaped her lips. Whatever that was, it was a good sign. And I’m glad she beginning to settle in with me.“Okay. I like blue too, all shades of blue,” I responded. Now that I know we share same taste in colours, that’s a good start for us. For me. “Your turn,” I added sharply before she had any chance to reply.“You
ASHLEY'S POVMy anxiety surged through me as Alex and I walk into the room. I watched him carefully, my heart pounding wildly with each nanosecond that passed.I dutifully walked beside him as he held open the sliding door for me to pass through. We were now in a huge room which served as the main entrance to other rooms.A uniformed man with a wide grin etched permanently on his face stood at attention for us. "Bonsoir, Monsieur Jordan," he greeted warmly. He should be in his early forties going by the sparse amount of grey on his head. "And who might the young lady be?"I couldn't help but noticed the way he looked at me as he led us into another large room."Watch it, Felix," Alex warned in an acidic tone, which sent shivers down my spine. "She is not to be regarded as a young lady," Alex said gruffly, taking my hand in his. "C'est ma femme (This is my wife)."I should be pitying Felix when I saw him shudder for a brief moment under Alex intimidating gaze. Instead, I was glad Alex h
