Kasimir

The satellite call disconnected with a sharp, static click that sounded like a bone snapping in the quiet cabin of the Gulfstream.

For three agonizing seconds, the only sound inside the leather-trimmed fuselage was the low, pressurized hum of the twin engines fighting against the rising Baltic gales.

Then, Vespera’s phone slipped from her numb fingers, rattling across the polished mahogany table between our seats.

"Kasimir..." Her voice didn't sound like her own. It was a hollow, frantic thread, completely stripped of the razor sharp legal intellect she had brandished like a weapon only an hour ago. Her face went translucent, her dark eyes wide and glassy with pure, unadulterated terror. "He has her. Soren has Liesea... he said she's on a ship... he said she's sinking..."

"Jonas!" I roared, my voice tearing through the cabin like thunder. I unbuckled my harness and stood up so fast my leather chair groaned under the sudden force. "Get the flight deck on the line! I want the exact radar telemetry for every maritime vessel leaving the Elbe estuary within the last two hours!"

Jonas was already frantically hammering away at his encrypted tablet in the rear security suite. "Herr Adler, the storm front moving in from the North Sea has disabled the commercial maritime tracking relays! We are flying blind into a Class Four gale over Hamburg!"

The jet suddenly pitched violently to the left as a massive wall of turbulence slammed into the starboard wing. The overhead reading lights flickered, buzzing sharply before dying, plunging the cabin into a dim, shadow drenched twilight punctuated only by the strobe like flashes of lightning outside the oval windows.

I didn't care about the storm. I didn't care about the altitude warnings chiming softly from the cockpit. My entire universe had narrowed to the woman standing across from me.

Vespera had unbuckled her belt, trying frantically to stand, to move, to do something to bridge the two hundred miles between us and her dying sister.

"Vespera, sit down!" I commanded, reaching across the table to anchor her. "We are in the middle of a severe weather cell.

"I can't sit down!" she screamed, her voice cracking with an agonizing, raw despair that sliced straight into my chest. Tears spilled over her lashes, glinting silver in the lightning flashes. "She's in the water, Kasimir! She can't walk, she can't swim, she's trapped on a boat in the middle of a storm because of me! Because I agreed to Greta's transfer!"

She took a wild, unstable step toward the aisle, intending to march toward the flight deck, but the plane suddenly dropped two hundred feet in a horrifying, zero gravity plunge.

The floor disappeared from beneath her feet.

A sharp, terrified gasp tore from her throat as she lost her balance completely, her fragile frame thrown backward by the violent shift in momentum.

"I've got you!" I lunged across the narrow aisle, ignoring the brutal force of gravity pulling at my own balance.

My broad arms locked around her waist, catching her mid air. The sudden impact knocked the breath from my lungs as the jet slammed back into heavy air, the violent upward heave pinning us together. I tumbled backward into my oversized leather armchair, the shear force pulling her straight down into my lap.

My back hit the leather seat hard, but my arms never loosened. I held her against my chest with a desperate, crushing strength, my hands shielding her injured collarbone from slamming against my shoulder.

"Kasimir she choked out, her hands instinctively grabbing the lapels of my dark wool coat to stabilize herself.

"Don't move," I rasped, my breath ragged and hot against her cheek. "Hold on to me."

The jet rolled violently to the right, a massive bolt of blue-white lightning tearing through the storm clouds outside the window, illuminating the darkened cabin in a stark, blinding flash.

In that single, frozen microsecond of brilliant light, the chaotic world outside ceased to exist.

Vespera was straddling my lap, her dark hair tumbling wild and free around her shoulders, her chest heaving in frantic, shallow gasps against mine. Her lips were parted, barely half an inch from my own. I could feel the intense, burning heat radiating off her skin, taste the bitter salt of her tears on the air between us.

Her dark eyes locked onto mine, dilated with a potent, intoxicating mixture of raw terror, agonizing grief, and a sudden, undeniable surge of electric heat that made the blood roar in my ears.

My fingers tightened on her waist, digging into the soft fabric of her sweater. The slow-burning tension that had been building between us for weeks through cold legal contracts, bloody bandages, and whispered vows in the dark exploded into a suffocating, undeniable fire.

"I will get her back, Vespera," I whispered, my voice dropping into a rough, primal growl that vibrated directly against her mouth. My thumb rose to press firmly against her trembling lower lip, anchoring her to my breath. "Do you hear me? I will pull her out of the ocean with my bare hands if I have to. Look at me."

She didn't pull away. She leaned into my hand, her fingers tightening on my lapels until her knuckles turned white, her entire body trembling against mine in the dark cabin.

"Swear it to me," she sobbed softly, her eyes searching mine with a terrifying, beautiful desperation. "Swear you won't let her drown."

"I swear it on my life," I rasped, my head dipping lower, my lips brushing against hers so lightly it was an agonizing torture. "On my soul. On everything I am."

For a long, agonizing heartbeat, neither of us moved. The plane rocked, the lightning flashed, and the heat between our mouths grew so intense it threatened to consume every boundary we had built. I wanted to kiss her. I wanted to devour her grief, to claim her right here in the storm, to prove to her that she was no longer alone in this brutal world.

Her eyes flickered shut, her head tilting slightly toward mine, inviting the collision.

BANG.

A deafening explosion echoed from the starboard engine outside, followed by a violent, shuddering vibration that rattled every rivet in the fuselage.

The jet went into a steep, terrifying bank, the cabin altitude warning alarms blaring into a continuous, high-pitched scream.

The door to the flight deck burst open, and the co-pilot staggered out, his face pale and slick with sweat as oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling panels above us.

"Herr Adler!" the pilot shouted over the roar of the alarms. "Engine two just ingested hail! We've lost hydraulic pressure in the primary rudder we are going down over the Hamburg mudflats!"

  • HIS DARKEST HEIRLOOM    Chapter 26: The Truth Begins to Fragment

Kasimir The echo of the iron bar slamming home still vibrated through the foundation of the subterranean vault. "Thank you for leading him right to me, Vespera." Soren’s recorded voice cut off with a harsh, high-pitched squelch of static. Then, the overhead intercom speaker died, leaving only the sound of our ragged breathing in the pitch black air. "Kasimir..." Vespera’s voice was a low, trembling thread in the darkness. "Stay behind me," I commanded, pulling her small, cold hand around my waist as I raised my free hand toward the heavy steel door. I didn't waste time throwing my weight against reinforced iron. Instead, I drawn my knife from my belt, driving the hardened steel blade into the narrow gap between the frame and the door mechanism. I jammed it upward with everything I had, leveraging my shoulder against the frame until the rusted internal bolt groaned, sheared, and snapped with a sharp metallic crack. I threw my weight into the door. It burst open, swinging wide on

  • HIS DARKEST HEIRLOOM    Chapter 25: The Ghost of Falkenrath

Vespera The smell of dry rot, damp paper, and old leather hung thick in the air of the subterranean basement beneath the old Falkenrath Logistics headquarters. It was 2:00 AM. The building above had been abandoned and boarded up ever since my father’s funeral, but the key was still hidden beneath the copper pipe behind the boiler. My hand trembled as I held up the small beam of my pocket flashlight, the thin circle of white light cutting through decades of floating dust. I shouldn't have slipped away from Alpine Ridge. Jonas and his guards were likely searching the perimeter right now, but I couldn't breathe under Kasimir’s roof anymore. Not while those yellowed shipping logs from Hamburg burned a hole through my mind. I knelt beside the rusted steel filing cabinet in the back corner of the vault the one labeled 1998–2018: Private Maritime Filings. Using a slender steel pick I’d pulled from my father’s old desk drawer, I forced the lock open with a muffled click. Inside, bound in

  • HIS DARKEST HEIRLOOM    Chapter 24: The Drive Back to Munich

Vespera The armored Mercedes SUV cut through the dark, rain soaked Autobahn like a hearse heading toward a grave. Outside, the storm had turned into a steady, dreary drizzle that blurred the passing streetlights into streaks of dull yellow. Inside, the silence was a physical entity heavy, suffocating, and poisonous enough to choke on. Jonas was driving, his knuckles white against the leather steering wheel, his eyes darting nervously to the rearview mirror every few seconds. He didn't dare speak. Nobody did. I pressed my forehead against the cold glass of the passenger window, staring out into the black void of the German countryside. The yellowed pages of my father's old shipping logs were crumpled tightly in my lap, the edges digging into my fingers until my skin turned white. My injured collarbone throbbed in sharp, sickening pulses, but the pain beneath my ribs the sheer, blinding agony of betrayal was far worse. Beside me in the rear cabin, Kasimir sat like a monument carved

  • HIS DARKEST HEIRLOOM    Chapter 23: The Unspoken Warning

Vespera The rain outside the Oberdeck Lounge seemed to freeze mid air, the howling wind deadened by the suffocating weight of Soren’s words. Payment for his murder. The words didn't just hang in the room; they sank into my skin like liquid ice, paralyzing my breath, my blood, my very heart. I stared at the back of Kasimir’s head at the broad, dark shoulders that had shielded me from sniper fire, at the neck where I had felt his pulse hammering frantically and hot in the subterranean vault. "He's lying," I whispered, though my own voice sounded small, thin, and entirely devoid of conviction. "Kasimir... tell him he's lying." Kasimir didn't answer right away. The steel barrel of his Sig Sauer remained pressed firmly against the center of Soren’s forehead, but the muscle along his jaw twitched with a violent, microscopic tremor. He didn't turn around. He didn't look at me. And in that awful, agonizing silence, my world began to fracture around the edges. "Go on, Kasimir," Soren pur

  • HIS DARKEST HEIRLOOM    Chapter 22: The Hamburg Confrontation

Vespera The smell of burning aviation fuel and salty marsh mud was still clinging to my hair, but I didn't care about the smoke, the bruised ribs, or the emergency landing that had nearly ended our lives on the northern bank of the Elbe. My heart was beating in my throat, each pulse a jagged blade of pure, agonizing terror for Liesea. Rain lashed against the floor to ceiling glass windows of the Oberdeck Lounge Soren Lindner’s private harbor sanctuary suspended three stories above the churned, black water of the Hamburg docks. Below us, massive container ships swayed in the storm, their heavy iron hulls groaning against the wooden pylons. The heavy teak doors of the lounge didn't just open they disintegrated. Kasimir kicked them off their brass hinges, the reinforced wood splintering into a dozen sharp fragments that skittered across the polished marble floor. He strode into the room like an harbinger of death. He was drenched in rain and soot, his tie gone, his white shirt unbu
