Lily Pendleton

The cafeteria erupted into chaos.

Whispers spread like wildfire. The Pendleton Alpha is coming. The council is coming. Students scrambled to their phones, texting, snapping photos. Wolves shifted nervously, their eyes darting between Damon and Kael.

Vivian was smiling. That cold, triumphant smile I knew too well.

She'd planned this. She'd called our stepfather and told him everything—the human freak, the playboy captain, the broken rule. She wanted me destroyed, and she'd used the one weapon that could actually do it.

Family.

Damon grabbed my arm. "Lily, go to your room. Lock the door. Don't open it for anyone."

I shook my head. No.

"Lily—"

"No," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "I'm done hiding."

Damon stared at me. He'd never heard me say that word. I'd never said it to him.

Kael moved to my side, his body a shield. "I'm not letting her face this alone."

Damon's jaw tightened. "You've done enough."

"She's mine," Kael said quietly. "And I'm not backing down."

The doors to the cafeteria slammed open.

My stepfather, Marcus Pendleton, stood in the doorway. He was tall, broad, dressed in a tailored suit that cost more than my entire life. Behind him stood three elders—grey-haired wolves with cold eyes and colder hearts.

The pack council.

Marcus's gaze swept the room. It landed on me.

"Lily," he said, his voice smooth as poison. "You've caused quite a stir."

I wanted to shrink. I wanted to disappear. But Kael's hand found mine, squeezing, grounding me.

I stood my ground.

Marcus walked toward us, his heels clicking on the stone floor. He stopped in front of Damon.

"You were supposed to protect her," he said. "Instead, you let her whore herself out to your best friend."

My face burned. Whore.

Damon growled. "Watch your mouth."

"Or what?" Marcus laughed. "You'll challenge me? You're not ready, boy. And the council knows it."

The elders murmured, nodding.

Marcus turned to me. "You've embarrassed this pack. A mute human with no wolf, spreading her legs for a half-breed playboy. Do you have any idea what this does to our reputation?"

I opened my mouth. No sound came out. The panic was closing in.

Kael stepped forward. "She's not a whore. She's my mate."

The room went silent.

Damon's head snapped toward Kael. "What?"

"You heard me," Kael said, his voice steady. "My wolf has claimed her. She's mine. And if you have a problem with that, you take it up with me."

Marcus laughed again—cold, cruel. "A mate? You can't mate with a human. She has no wolf. She has no scent. She's nothing."

"She's not human," Kael said. "She's something else. Something I've never felt before."

The elders whispered among themselves.

Vivian stepped forward, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "Father, maybe we should test her. You know, to see what she really is."

My blood ran cold. Test her?

Marcus nodded slowly. "An excellent idea. If she's truly a wolf, she'll survive the testing. If not..." He smiled. "We'll know exactly what to do with her."

I looked at Damon. He looked pale.

"Lily," he said quietly, "whatever happens, don't let them see you break."

I didn't understand. But I nodded.

Marcus gestured to the elders. "Bring her to the training hall. We'll perform the Rite of Unmasking."

---

The training hall was a massive stone arena—bleachers, a dirt floor, and a ceiling that opened to the sky. It was where wolves settled disputes. Where they fought for dominance. Where they proved their blood.

I stood in the center, surrounded by wolves. Damon was at my side. Kael was forbidden from entering—Marcus had ordered the guards to hold him back.

I could hear him shouting my name from the hallway.

Marcus stood before me, holding a small silver dagger. The blade glowed faintly.

"This will reveal your true nature," he said. "A drop of blood, and the truth will be known."

I stared at the dagger. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would explode.

"Hold out your hand."

I looked at Damon. He nodded, his face tight with fear.

I held out my hand.

Marcus sliced my palm. It stung—sharp and cold.

The blood dripped onto the dirt floor.

And nothing happened.

The elders leaned in. The crowd held its breath.

Then the ground began to tremble.

My blood started to glow—golden and bright, like liquid sunlight. It spread across the dirt, forming symbols I'd never seen. The air grew heavy, thick with power.

Marcus stumbled back. "What—what is this?"

The symbols blazed brighter. A howl echoed—not from the wolves around me, but from the sky.

From me.

I felt it building in my chest. Something ancient. Something terrifying. A sound that had been locked inside me for nineteen years.

The howl erupted from my throat.

It was pure. It was powerful. It was mine.

Every wolf in the hall dropped to their knees.

Not out of respect. Out of fear.

My howl faded. I stood there, trembling, my hand bleeding, my body humming with energy I didn't understand.

Marcus stared at me, his face white.

"You're not human," he whispered. "You're a Mute Omega. The rarest wolf in existence."

The council elders were shaking. The students were frozen.

And Damon—my brother, my protector—looked at me with something I'd never seen in his eyes.

Fear.

"The Mute Omega hasn't been born in a thousand years," one elder said, his voice trembling. "Her voice can command Alphas. Her howl can tear packs apart. She's not just rare. She's dangerous."

Marcus's eyes glittered with greed.

"Then we control her," he said. "We bind her. She's a Pendleton. She belongs to this pack."

He reached for me.

And then the doors burst open.

Kael stood there, his eyes blazing silver, his body radiating raw power. He'd broken free from the guards. He was shaking with rage.

"Touch her," he said, his voice a growl, "and I'll burn this whole place to the ground."

Marcus laughed. "You're just a half-breed. You can't—"

"I can," Kael said, stepping forward. "And I will."

He walked toward me, his eyes never leaving mine. The wolves parted like water.

He reached me, grabbed my bleeding hand, and pulled me into his chest.

"You're not a weapon," he whispered into my hair. "You're not a tool. You're mine."

I clung to him. I was shaking. I was terrified.

But I was also free.

Marcus's voice rang out: "Seize them."

But before the guards could move, Damon stepped between them and us.

"Back off," he said. "She's my sister. And I'm done letting you control her."

Marcus stared at his son—his heir—with pure fury.

"You would betray your pack? Your family?"

Damon looked at me. Then at Kael.

"I would betray anyone," he said, "to protect her."

And then we ran.

Lily PendletonHe texted me at midnight.Library. Back corner. Don't bring your notepad.I stared at the screen for a full minute. My heart was already racing.I should've said no. I should've turned off my phone and gone to sleep. But my fingers typed back before my brain could stop them: I'll be there. The library was dead silent. Dusty. Smelled like old paper and secrets. I slipped through the back door, my sneakers squeaking on the marble floor. He was in the corner, hidden behind a towering shelf of ancient texts. He wasn't reading. He was just waiting. When he saw me, his eyes went dark. "Close the door."I did.The click of the latch echoed. And then he was on me.His hands grabbed my waist, pulling me into him. His lips crashed against mine—hungry, desperate, nothing like the soft kisses from the rink. This was raw. This was want.I gasped into his mouth, and he swallowed the sound."You came," he breathed against my lips. "I thought you wouldn't."I shook my head. I couldn't

  • HIS MUTE MATE   The rink

Lily PendletonThree days passed.Three days of dodging Vivian's snide comments. Three days of hiding in corners during lunch. Three days of avoiding Kael because every time I saw him, my chest did something weird and my face went hot.But I couldn't avoid him forever. On Thursday, I found myself walking past the hockey rink. The sound of skates scraping ice pulled me like a magnet. I peeked through the glass doors.Kael was on the ice. Alone. He was flying—smooth and fast, his body low to the ground, stick handling like the puck was glued to his blade. He took a shot. The puck slammed into the net so hard the glass cracked. He skated to a stop, panting, his breath fogging the cold air.And he looked up. Right at me.Busted.He skated to the boards, leaning on them. "You know," he said, "most people knock."I wrote on my notepad: Sorry. I was just walking by."Liar," he grinned. "You came to see me."I flushed. Maybe."Come here," he said. "I have an idea."I hesitated. But my feet mo

  • HIS MUTE MATE   The first day

Lily PendletonBreakfast was chaos. The cafeteria was massive—wooden tables, stone pillars, the smell of bacon and eggs and something that made my wolf senses (if I had any) go haywire. Students packed the place, laughing, shoving, the hierarchy on full display. The Alphas sat at the center tables. The Betas circled the edges. And the Omegas? They served the food.I was none of the above. I was just a girl who didn't belong.Kael walked me to an empty table near the window. "Sit here," he said. "I'll grab you food. You like pancakes?"I nodded, still stunned that the untouchable playboy was fetching me breakfast. He returned with a plate piled high—pancakes, bacon, fruit. "Eat," he said. "You look like a stiff wind could knock you over."I wrote on my notepad: You don't have to do this."Yeah, I do," he said, sitting across from me. "You're new. You're scared. And I'm a nice guy when I want to be."I raised an eyebrow."Okay," he laughed, "I'm a decent guy. Sometimes. When it matters.

  • HIS MUTE MATE   The cage

Lily PendletonI haven't spoken in three years. Not because I can't. My vocal cords work fine. I've screamed in my head a thousand times—screamed at Claudia when she slapped me, screamed at Vivian when she laughed, screamed at the mirror when I looked at my reflection and saw nothing but a ghost. But sound is dangerous. Sound gets you hit. Sound gets you noticed. And being noticed in my house was the worst thing you could be.So I stopped.I became furniture. Quiet. Still. Useful.I washed the dishes. I folded the laundry. I took the blame when Vivian "accidentally" broke her mother's vase. I nodded when Claudia told me I was a burden, a freak, a human parasite sucking the life out of her pureblood wolf family.I believed her. For a long time, I did.My name is Lily. I'm nineteen. I have no wolf. I have no scent. I have no voice. And I'm about to be saved by the only person who actually sees me.---The morning it happened, I was in the kitchen, scrubbing a pan that was already clean.
