Bella Pov

I stood in the doorway and stared at the bed. The bed I shared with my husband. But right now Damian was on top of Karen and they were moving together like I did not exist.

Karen's red nails dug into Damian's back. She moaned his name loud and clear. Damian moved faster and grabbed Karen's hips tight.

My legs went weak. I grabbed the doorframe to keep from falling. My heart pounded so hard I thought it would break through my chest.

This could not be real. This could not be happening.

But it was happening. Right in front of me, in my house, in my bed.

"Yes Damian right there" Karen moaned louder.

Damian groaned and pulled Karen closer to him.

I felt hot tears fill my eyes. I tried to breathe but my throat felt closed. I tried to say something but no words came out. My whole body shook and I needed to leave before they saw me.

I stepped back from the door. My hands were shaking so bad I almost dropped my purse. I turned and walked down the hallway as fast as I could without running. I did not want them to hear me. I did not want them to know I was there.

I made it to the front door and yanked it open. The cold air hit my face but I barely felt it, i ran to my car and fumbled with my keys until I finally got the door unlocked.

I threw myself into the driver's seat and slammed the door shut. Then the tears came, hard and fast. I could not stop them even if I wanted to.

"No no no" I whispered to myself.

I put the keys in the ignition with shaking hands. The car started and I backed out of the driveway too fast. I did not care. I just needed to get away from that house, away from that bedroom. Away from the image burned into my brain.

I drove down the street without any idea where I was going. Tears blurred my vision but I kept driving. I turned left then right then left again, nothing looked familiar but it did not matter.

After about ten minutes I screamed long and loud until my throat hurt.

Then I went quiet.

The pain in my chest felt like someone had stabbed me with a knife and twisted it. Every breath hurt, every heartbeat hurt. Everything hurt.

I thought about all the nights Damian said he was working late. All the times he said he had meetings. All the excuses I believed because I trusted him. I trusted him with everything.

"I am so stupid" I said to the empty car.

My phone started ringing. I glanced at the screen, Damian. I rejected the call and kept driving.

He called again. I rejected it again.

On the third call I turned my phone on silent and threw it onto the passenger seat.

I drove until I found a dark street corner. I put the car in park and turned off the engine. I looked down at my left hand. My wedding ring caught the streetlight and sparkled. It used to make me happy, now it just made me sick.

I pulled it off and held it in my palm. Two years of marriage, two years of thinking I had found my person. All of it meant nothing now.

"How could you do this to me" I whispered.

My phone lit up on the passenger seat. Message after message from Damian. I did not read them.

I put my head against the steering wheel and cried until I had no more tears left. My chest hurt from sobbing, my throat was raw. My eyes burned.

Finally I sat up and wiped my face with my sleeve. I looked at myself in the rearview mirror. My eyes were red and swollen. Mascara ran down my cheeks.

I picked up my phone and scrolled through Damian's messages without reading them. Fifteen missed calls. Twenty three text messages.

I opened my maps app and searched for hotels nearby. A cheap motel about five miles away came up first. I started the car and followed the directions.

The parking lot was half empty. The neon sign flickered on and off. I grabbed my purse and got out of the car, the wedding ring was still in my hand. I put it in my pocket.

I walked into the lobby. An older man sat behind the desk watching a small TV. The screen showed some old movie I did not recognize.

"I need a room" I said.

"How many nights" he asked without looking up.

"Just one for now"

"Cash or card"

"Card"

He finally looked at me. His eyes went to my face and I knew I looked terrible. My eyes were puffy. My cheeks were stained with tears, but he did not say anything. He just took my card and ran it through the machine, the machine beeped twice.

"Room twelve. Second floor" He handed me a key. "Checkout is at eleven"

"Thank you" I said quietly.

I took the key and walked back outside. I found the stairs and climbed them slowly. My legs felt like they weighed a thousand pounds. Each step took effort, i found room twelve and unlocked the door.

The room was small and smelled like old carpet and cleaning spray. The bed looked hard. The TV was ancient. The walls were painted a dull beige but it was not my house and that was all that mattered right now.

I locked the door behind me and dropped my purse on the floor. I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

I laughed but there was no humor in it. Just pain.

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    A New Beginning

Bella PovWe got married on a Saturday in October fourteen months after the proposal. Sixty people in a rented garden with string lights strung between the trees and wooden chairs in two short rows and Nathan having strong opinions about where the cake table was positioned that the venue coordinator ultimately accommodated because it was easier than arguing with a seven year old who had clearly thought about this more than anyone.I wore ivory and nothing like the first dress. Damian wore dark navy which Nathan had personally selected at the suit fitting and defended vigorously when both Damian and the tailor suggested grey. Nathan wore a matching vest and carried the rings in a small velvet pouch and a second pouch of flower petals because we had said he could do both and nobody came up with a compelling reason to revise that decision.Tanya stood beside me. Frank from Damian's support group stood beside him. My mother sat in the front row in blue and did not offer commentary on a

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Chocolate Cake and Ducks

Bella PovI was still crouching when I said yes and Damian made a sound I will never forget and Nathan threw both arms in the air and shouted something that was half word and half pure noise that startled the ducks near the pond into brief alarm.Damian slid the ring onto my finger and stood and I stood and he held me and then Nathan wedged himself between both of us from the side and refused to be displaced."I'm going to be in the wedding right," Nathan said, his voice muffled against Damian's jacket."You are absolutely going to be in the wedding," Damian said."As the ring bearer or the flower person," Nathan said."Whichever one you want," I said."Both," he said without hesitating."Both it is," Damian said.We sat down in the grass eventually because Nathan wanted to tell the ducks what happened and Damian and I sat next to each other and I looked at the ring while he watched me look at it. The stone was simple and clean and the setting was low and it was nothing like

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Marry Me Again

Damian Pov I had been planning it for three weeks and every time I started mapping the details I went back to the one fixed point which was that it had to be simple and honest and somewhere real. The park where Bella and I had our first date ten years ago was a forty minute drive from the city but Nathan loved the open space and the duck pond and Bella had mentioned the park twice in the past year in passing like she still thought about it.I told Nathan the plan the night before. He sat very still while I explained it which was how I knew he understood it was serious."What do I do," he said."You come out from behind the tree when I get down on one knee," I said. "That's it. Just stand there.""Should I say anything," he asked."Only if you want to," I said.He considered this. "I'll decide in the moment," he said."Good plan," I said."Do I look serious enough," he asked. He tightened his arms across his chest to demonstrate his intended posture."Very serious," I said.

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Brave to Ask

Damian Pov Six months of dating and I had opened and closed the ring tab online four times before I finally called Dr. Williams and said the thing I had been avoiding saying out loud."I want to propose to Bella," I said. "I've been thinking about it for months and I keep stopping myself and I need to talk through it.""What keeps stopping you," she asked."Fear," I said. "Specifically the fear that she'll say no. Not because she doesn't love me but because she doesn't trust me enough for marriage yet. And if she says no I have to figure out how to keep co-parenting and co-existing with that answer between us.""That's a real possibility," she said. "Are you prepared for it.""No," I said honestly. "But I'm also not prepared to never ask. The wondering would be worse than the no. I know that already.""Tell me why you want to propose," she said. "Not what you're afraid of. Why you want to do it."I thought about it for a moment. "Because I want to be her husband," I said. "No

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Solid Ground

Bella Pov My mother had been holding it in for two months and I knew because silence from my mother on a subject she disagreed with was never actual silence. It was pressure building. On a Sunday afternoon while Nathan was in her backyard she set her tea down on the counter with a small deliberate sound and I knew the conversation had arrived."I need to say something about Damian," she said."Mom," I said."Hear me out," she said. "You came home broken. I watched you rebuild from nothing. I watched you sleep on my couch for weeks and I watched you cry every night and I watched you build the agency and the apartment and your whole life back from zero. And now you're choosing to go back to the person who caused all of that.""He's different now," I said."You said that before," she said. "Back when you were still married. He's working on himself you said. He's in therapy you said. And then the trial happened and every detail came out in a courtroom and you had to sit there and h

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Right Timing

Damian Pov Nathan had been watching us for weeks with the careful attention of someone conducting a silent investigation. Every time Bella came to pick him up or I dropped him off he noted how long we talked at the door and whether we were smiling and at what and how close we stood. He was seven now and sharp in a way that kept catching me off guard. One evening while I was tucking him in he folded his hands on his chest and looked at the ceiling the way he did when he had decided to say something serious."Daddy," he said. "Are you and Mommy dating."I sat on the edge of his bed. "What makes you ask that.""Because you looked at your phone during my soccer game," he said. "And then you smiled like it was Mommy texting you. And now you smell different when she's around.""I smell different," I repeated."Like you put on more of the good spray," he said. "The one you save."I tried not to smile at that. "Yeah buddy," I said. "We're dating."He sat up fast and the blanket went
