Coming home early was supposed to be a surprise. I sat in the makeup chair while Tanya removed the false lashes from my eyes. The photoshoot wrapped up three hours earlier than expected because the photographer's equipment stopped working. "Girl you look exhausted" Tanya said while dabbing a cotton pad on my face. I sighed and leaned back in the chair. "I feel exhausted" "How many shoots have you done this week" "This is my fifth" I closed my eyes while she wiped off the heavy foundation. "And I have two more next week" Tanya clicked her tongue. "Bella you need to slow down. Your skin is going to hate you" "I know but the money is good" I opened my eyes and looked at her through the mirror. "Plus it keeps me busy" "Busy from what" She raised an eyebrow at me. I shrugged. "Just life I guess" "Is everything okay with you and Damian" Tanya asked while organizing her brushes. My chest tightened at his name. "Yeah everything is fine. Why do you ask" "Because every time I mention him you get this look on your face" Tanya handed me a makeup wipe. "Like something is bothering you" I took the wipe and cleaned the rest of my face. "He has just been working a lot lately. His promotion came with more responsibilities" "How much is a lot" "He comes home around ten or eleven most nights" I said quietly. "Sometimes even later" Tanya stopped what she was doing and looked at me. "Every night" "Pretty much" I avoided her eyes. "But that is normal right. He is building his career" "Bella honey" Tanya put her hand on my shoulder. "No job requires you to work that late every single night" "He says he has important meetings and paperwork" I defended him even though part of me wondered the same thing. "His secretary Karen helps him with most of it" "His secretary" Tanya's voice changed. "The same one you told me about last month" I nodded. "Yeah Karen. She is really good at her job apparently" "Uh huh" Tanya crossed her arms. "And how do you feel about him spending so much time with her" "I trust him" I said quickly. "Damian would never do anything to hurt me" "Have you met this Karen person" "Once at the company dinner last month" I remembered how she looked at Damian that night. How she laughed at everything he said. "She seemed nice" "Nice" Tanya repeated. "What does she look like" "Why does that matter" "Just answer the question Bella" I sighed. "She has long dark hair and she is pretty I guess. Always wears these tight skirts and high heels to work" Tanya made a face. "And your husband works late with her every night" "You are making it sound worse than it is" I stood up from the chair. "They work together. That is all" "Okay if you say so" Tanya looked like she wanted to say more but held back. "What" I crossed my arms. "Just say what you are thinking" "I am thinking that you should pay attention" Tanya walked over to me. "I have seen this happen before Bella. My sister went through the same thing with her ex husband" "Damian is not your sister's ex husband" "I know but" Tanya touched my arm gently. "Just be careful okay. Men can be really good at hiding things" "You think he is cheating on me" My voice came out sharper than I intended. "I did not say that" Tanya raised her hands. "I am just saying you should trust your instincts. If something feels wrong then maybe you should look into it" "Nothing feels wrong" I lied. Everything felt wrong lately but I did not want to admit it. "I am just tired and overthinking" "Maybe you are right" Tanya did not look convinced. "But promise me you will talk to him about how you feel" "I promise" I grabbed my bag from the corner of the room. "Actually the shoot ended early so I think I will go home and surprise him" "That sounds nice" Tanya smiled. "You two need some quality time together" "Exactly what I was thinking" I pulled out my phone and checked for messages. Nothing from Damian. "We can order takeout and watch movies like we used to" "When was the last time you did that" I had to think about it. "Maybe two months ago" "Two months" Tanya shook her head. "Girl that is way too long" "I know" I felt a pang in my chest. "We used to do it every weekend before he got promoted" "What changed" "He got busier and I got busier" I said. "We just grew apart I guess" "You should not grow apart from your husband Bella" Tanya said seriously. "You should grow together" "I know you are right" I walked toward the door. "That is why I am going home to fix things" "Good" Tanya followed me. "And if he is actually working late like he says then maybe you two can figure out a better schedule" "Yeah maybe" I paused at the door. "Thanks for listening Tanya" "Anytime girl" She pulled me into a hug. I pulled away and walked out of the studio. The parking lot was almost empty. I unlocked my car and slid into the driver's seat. Tanya's words kept replaying in my head. Was I overthinking everything or was my gut trying to tell me something. I started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. The drive home took about thirty minutes. I stopped at a red light and checked my phone again. Still no messages from Damian. He usually texted me during lunch but today there was nothing. Maybe he was in meetings all day. Or maybe he forgot. Either way I would see him soon and we could spend the rest of the afternoon together. I turned onto our street and pulled into the driveway. Damian's car was parked in its usual spot. Good. He was home. I grabbed my purse and stepped out of the car. I unlocked the front door and walked inside. The house was quiet. Too quiet. Usually Damian had the TV on or music playing from his office. "Damian" I called out. No response. I closed the door behind me and slipped off my shoes. I walked through the living room and noticed his briefcase on the couch. His jacket was draped over the armchair. He was definitely home. "Damian" I called again. Still nothing. Something felt off. The air in the house felt different. Heavy. Like something bad was waiting around the corner. I moved down the hallway toward our bedroom. The door was slightly open and I could hear something coming from inside. Faint sounds. My heart started beating faster. I reached the door and pushed it open wider. What I saw made my whole world stop.Bella PovWe got married on a Saturday in October fourteen months after the proposal. Sixty people in a rented garden with string lights strung between the trees and wooden chairs in two short rows and Nathan having strong opinions about where the cake table was positioned that the venue coordinator ultimately accommodated because it was easier than arguing with a seven year old who had clearly thought about this more than anyone.I wore ivory and nothing like the first dress. Damian wore dark navy which Nathan had personally selected at the suit fitting and defended vigorously when both Damian and the tailor suggested grey. Nathan wore a matching vest and carried the rings in a small velvet pouch and a second pouch of flower petals because we had said he could do both and nobody came up with a compelling reason to revise that decision.Tanya stood beside me. Frank from Damian's support group stood beside him. My mother sat in the front row in blue and did not offer commentary on a
Bella PovI was still crouching when I said yes and Damian made a sound I will never forget and Nathan threw both arms in the air and shouted something that was half word and half pure noise that startled the ducks near the pond into brief alarm.Damian slid the ring onto my finger and stood and I stood and he held me and then Nathan wedged himself between both of us from the side and refused to be displaced."I'm going to be in the wedding right," Nathan said, his voice muffled against Damian's jacket."You are absolutely going to be in the wedding," Damian said."As the ring bearer or the flower person," Nathan said."Whichever one you want," I said."Both," he said without hesitating."Both it is," Damian said.We sat down in the grass eventually because Nathan wanted to tell the ducks what happened and Damian and I sat next to each other and I looked at the ring while he watched me look at it. The stone was simple and clean and the setting was low and it was nothing like
Damian Pov I had been planning it for three weeks and every time I started mapping the details I went back to the one fixed point which was that it had to be simple and honest and somewhere real. The park where Bella and I had our first date ten years ago was a forty minute drive from the city but Nathan loved the open space and the duck pond and Bella had mentioned the park twice in the past year in passing like she still thought about it.I told Nathan the plan the night before. He sat very still while I explained it which was how I knew he understood it was serious."What do I do," he said."You come out from behind the tree when I get down on one knee," I said. "That's it. Just stand there.""Should I say anything," he asked."Only if you want to," I said.He considered this. "I'll decide in the moment," he said."Good plan," I said."Do I look serious enough," he asked. He tightened his arms across his chest to demonstrate his intended posture."Very serious," I said.
Damian Pov Six months of dating and I had opened and closed the ring tab online four times before I finally called Dr. Williams and said the thing I had been avoiding saying out loud."I want to propose to Bella," I said. "I've been thinking about it for months and I keep stopping myself and I need to talk through it.""What keeps stopping you," she asked."Fear," I said. "Specifically the fear that she'll say no. Not because she doesn't love me but because she doesn't trust me enough for marriage yet. And if she says no I have to figure out how to keep co-parenting and co-existing with that answer between us.""That's a real possibility," she said. "Are you prepared for it.""No," I said honestly. "But I'm also not prepared to never ask. The wondering would be worse than the no. I know that already.""Tell me why you want to propose," she said. "Not what you're afraid of. Why you want to do it."I thought about it for a moment. "Because I want to be her husband," I said. "No
Bella Pov My mother had been holding it in for two months and I knew because silence from my mother on a subject she disagreed with was never actual silence. It was pressure building. On a Sunday afternoon while Nathan was in her backyard she set her tea down on the counter with a small deliberate sound and I knew the conversation had arrived."I need to say something about Damian," she said."Mom," I said."Hear me out," she said. "You came home broken. I watched you rebuild from nothing. I watched you sleep on my couch for weeks and I watched you cry every night and I watched you build the agency and the apartment and your whole life back from zero. And now you're choosing to go back to the person who caused all of that.""He's different now," I said."You said that before," she said. "Back when you were still married. He's working on himself you said. He's in therapy you said. And then the trial happened and every detail came out in a courtroom and you had to sit there and h
Damian Pov Nathan had been watching us for weeks with the careful attention of someone conducting a silent investigation. Every time Bella came to pick him up or I dropped him off he noted how long we talked at the door and whether we were smiling and at what and how close we stood. He was seven now and sharp in a way that kept catching me off guard. One evening while I was tucking him in he folded his hands on his chest and looked at the ceiling the way he did when he had decided to say something serious."Daddy," he said. "Are you and Mommy dating."I sat on the edge of his bed. "What makes you ask that.""Because you looked at your phone during my soccer game," he said. "And then you smiled like it was Mommy texting you. And now you smell different when she's around.""I smell different," I repeated."Like you put on more of the good spray," he said. "The one you save."I tried not to smile at that. "Yeah buddy," I said. "We're dating."He sat up fast and the blanket went
Bella PovI woke up in the motel room and forgot where I was for a second. Then everything came rushing back. Damian. Karen. The bed. The betrayal.I sat up and looked around the small room. Sunlight came through the thin curtains. My phone was on the nightstand. I picked it up and checked the time
Bella PovI was sleeping when I heard voices. Loud voices outside my hospital room. I opened my eyes. Damian was standing at the door. Blocking someone."You can't come in" Damian said. "She needs rest""She's my daughter" another voice said. My mom. "I have a right to see her""Not when you're goi
Damian PovThe doctors managed to stop Bella's labor. But she had to stay on complete bed rest. No visitors. No stress. No anything.I was allowed to stay because I was the father. But I had to be quiet. Calm. No fighting.Bella had been in the hospital for three days when Ethan showed up. I was in
Karen PovThe prison cell smelled like sweat and bleach. The walls were gray concrete. The bed was a thin mattress on a metal frame. This was my home now. At least until my trial.I sat on the bed staring at the wall. I had been here for three weeks. Three weeks of orange jumpsuits and terrible foo
