CHAPTER 2

SELENA POV

My phone dings with another text from Sasha. I sigh as I glance at the time. It's already 11 p.m. Looks like I'm not the only one who can't sleep.

I open her message.

"Liam Kinsley is going to die a horrible death."

A smile tugs at my lips. Sasha must be really furious this time.

"Relax, Sasha," I type before hitting send and reaching for my cup of water.

Damn.

The jug is empty. How did I forget to refill it earlier?

Of course. Var Robert.

I climb out of bed, grab the empty jug, and step into the hallway. But the scene before me makes me freeze.

Var Robert leaning casually against the wall. His eyes shut as he gets a blowjob from the naked lady on her knees. Damn it. This damn pervert.

"Mmmmh," moans the gorgeous brunette as she sucks him.

My mouth drops open as my breasts begin to heave with surprise and excitement. My mouth opens and closes a few times, but no sounds come out. Damn it, who wouldn't be aroused at such a scene, well except a saint.

Seriously? Couldn't they have taken this somewhere more private? Unfortunately, Var Robert has never cared what anyone thinks. Sharing the same floor with him only makes it worse.

Too embarrassed to remain standing there and to avoid the two realizing there's a third wheel, I prepare to head back to my room.

I'm just about to return when Var glances at me with half-lidded eyes. "Well?"

"Well?" I squeak, startled.

His lips curl. "Did you get wet staring?"

Jesus. Can he stop? My head feels as if it's about to explode. He tucks himself back into his swimming trunks.

My cheeks are on fire, burning with embarrassment. "I… I…"

Okay, Selena. You're making it all worse. Just say something.

"I… wasn't staring," I lie, my face still burning, avoiding his gaze. "I was walking and…" I put on a stern front. "I was just getting some water," I say, lifting the empty jug as proof. "You two just happened to be in the way."

His gaze drifts over me before settling on my oversized white T-shirt.

His eyes drop to my chest. "Seeing how your nipples are stiff…"

My eyes widen. "Var Robert!" I scream, flustered, as my hands quickly cover my chest. Damn it, how did I forget I was wearing a white oversized shirt stopping mid-thigh with nothing beneath?

Squeezing my eyes shut, I wish a hole would open and swallow me right now.

His lips stretch into a dangerous smile. "You could just say you want to join. Oops." His eyes widen in a dramatic way. "Didn't your pastor's daughter tell you it's a sin to stare at your foster brother's dick even if he's too hot?"

My cheeks burned like fire. "I didn't even see you. I was just walking. I wasn't… it's your fault for being shameless—"

"Sure," he said, dragging the word out, the smirk on his face deepening. "Funny thing, people who don't want to see something usually look away." He smiled, slow and sharp. "You didn't."

"I said I didn't!" I raise my voice.

"Var!" His fling interrupts, throwing me a sharp glare. "Who is she?"

"A hopeless virgin."

Without another word, I storm back into my room and slam the door shut before he drives me insane with his words.

"Var Robert," I mutter under my breath, "you are so paying for this."

I take my phone to chat Sasha up. I need to forget whatever I saw tonight. It's not like it's the first time I'm seeing his cock. That damn bastard has always been shameless with his dates. Sometimes he fucks them at the parking lot, at the pool. So definitely, I've had a handful of times seeing him naked, though I've never been this close.

I gulp hard, recalling how she sucked him. His size. He should be nine inches, perhaps. His size leaves me baffled on how his dates manage to have that huge thing inside them.

"Selena, you don't tell me to relax. I need to get back at that dick."

Well, Sasha's anger could pass as a distraction. I type back. "What do you have in mind?"

The sound of the door opening makes me look up.

Okay, don't stare. I warn myself.

Too late.

Wrapped only in a fluffy towel, Var Robert stands at the entrance of the door like a shameless sin.

My mouth drops momentarily as I take in his shirtless, freshly bathed self, not to mention the trail of hair arrowing toward his…

I leap to my feet, blushing as my stupid eyes trail the water trailing down his collarbone, down his chest, to his abs…

I jerk myself back as something silky soft lands on my face.

"Eeeew!" I shriek, yanking it away.

Realization hits a second later as I realize what it is.

I drop it. "Eeeew!" I scream, staring at the used condom on the floor as a strong wave of overwhelming nausea hits me.

Then I see red. Red. I am trembling. So badly trembling that if I snap, the whole building will collapse.

"VAR ROBERT!!!"

Bam.

The door slams shut.

Var Robert bolts before I can launch myself across the room and throttle him.

"Argh, stinky!" I rush to the restroom to wash off his filth from my face.

AHHH!

THE NEXT MORNING

"Ahhhh!" I wake up with a scream.

"It stinks! It stinks! It stinks!!"

I practically tumble out of bed and sprint to the bathroom, frantically scrubbing my face as if I can still wash away last night's nightmare.

I will never forgive Var Robert for doing this to me. I am getting back at him. He's paying for this.

30 MINUTES LATER

"Alright, calm down. You've washed off his filth." I puff at the mirror.

Now that makes me feel a little better. I won't cringe if I don't remember whatever it is.

I stare at myself. I'm dressed in my comfort. Oversized hoodie. Messy ponytail. No makeup.

All ready, sweetie. We don't do makeup, okay? Not that I'm against it, but my foster brother decided it wasn't a good idea for me to have makeup on.

He stated it's HIS house and HIS rules. And because it's HIS house, I'm not allowed to put makeup on.

I shouldn't obey him, right? But I did. Mom already went through a lot for my sake. I wouldn't want to ruin her happiness because of a spoiled jerk.

Smiling at my reflection in the mirror, I took my backpack and left the room, only to bump into a hard chest.

I winced as my head hurt from colliding with the brick of a chest, my glasses almost falling off from the collision.

"I'm sorry." His worried voice.

I look up, staring at him as I fix my glasses. Ethan. Hot Ethan. My stepdad's hot driver. The one I've got a tiny crush on.

Spoiler: who would see a gorgeous man and not crush? A gorgeous ripped man, with muscles for days. Massive and a bit older. I mean, he could be five years older.

I blush, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "Um… well, it's fine."

"I'm dropping you off at college, so all ready?"

I lift my eyes at him, a small frown on my brow. "Why? What about my mom?"

"Well—"

"Why are you taking her to college?" His voice boomed, and both Ethan and I stare in his direction as he strode toward us, looking breathtakingly hot in his bad boy outfit.

Spoiler: Lemon green shirt, black leather jacket, and faded dark jeans.

VAR POV

"Why are you taking her to college?" Just the thought sends my level of annoyance with Ethan to another level.

"Boss took his wife on a date, so she can't drop her daughter off. So now you know, I have to take her to college before she's late."

"You're not taking her." Over my dead body are the two of them going to be alone together. Fuck me if I don't notice how her eyes light up whenever she sees him. That blush.

I can't stand Selena and Ethan together. Nothing pisses me off more. She talks to him. The two of them are always chummy for some reason. When Ethan got hurt months ago, Selena was worried about him. Even applied ointment for him.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not jealous. It just pisses me off seeing her having the time of her life when I plan to make her life and her mom's miserable.

"I'm taking the boss's orders." He shrugs, knowing he's pissing me off and enjoying it.

"I'll take her," I grit out, even if it's the last thing I want to do.

"You think that's a good idea?"

"You think it's a good idea to question me on this?" I step toward him. My chest rippling, jaw clenched. If he made it his mission to piss me off more, snapping his neck wouldn't be hard.

Fighting? That has always been one of my ways to gain control.

"What?" Selena steps between us, having borne witness to more than a handful of me in fights. She's not foolish enough to tell I'm about to get into one with Ethan right now.

"You can't fight, Ethan." Her eyes are wild with shock.

You can't fight, Ethan.

I almost laugh at these words. No one fucks with my head like she does. Everything that comes out of her mouth to me always drives me to the edge.

God help me if I continue to stay here any longer…

"I'll take her." I grab her arm in a firm hold. This isn't up for debate.

She winces. "You're hurting me."

"You're hurting her." Ethan stepped forward.

I ram my fist into his jaw before he can put a hand on my other hand wrapped around her arm to play the hero.

"Ethan!" She shrieked.

"Know your place, driver." I bit out in contempt, then drag her out with me.

SELENA POV

"Go," Var orders the second the elevator doors open.

I suck in a harsh breath. "You can't…"

"NOW!" He barked.

Grinding my molars, I walk out. Damn, I hate him, and I hate him even more right now for being a jerk to Ethan. I can't help worrying how Ethan's jaw must be right now.

"Morning, Riley." When I pass by, I wave at the guard standing by the door.

"Morning, Selena," he responds. "Good luck on your classes."

"Thanks. I—"

"Go," Var orders again, cutting me off. His hand goes to my back, pushing me forward with a hard shove. I collide with the car.

Pulling away, I turn to scowl at him. "VAR! Can't you ever go a second without being a jerk!"

"Get. In. The. Car." He bit out each syllable, his jaw tightening.

I huff out a breath, doing a very good job of controlling the urge to tell him off. To fight back.

I wrench the car door open and climb in. He shuts the door on me.

"Seat belt," he snaps, starting up the car. The engine of the sports car roars to life. I press my lips together and clip it, screaming I HATE YOU VAR ROBERT in my head.

He sped off and down onto the highway.

"You shouldn't have hit Ethan."

The car stopped abruptly.

A shriek escaped my lips as I lurched forward and back, almost hitting my head.

"Get out."

"What?"

"Out."

"Excuse me, what?" I ask, not making sense of his words.

He turned his head, finally taking his eyes off the road to look at me. Dead icy eyes fixed on my face, shrinking me back slightly with fear.

"Get. Out."

I blink. "But… we're not at college, are we?"

Instead of giving a reply, he pushes the door on his side open. Walks around the car to my side, and I just follow him with my eyes.

He wrenches the door open, almost tipping me over.

His hand shoots up to wrap around my upper arm, and like a ragged doll, he drags me and tosses me into the roadside bush.

I fall on my side, my face colliding with the green nature. My glasses falling into the grass.

I quickly look for them, my vision a bit blur as I do, and when I find them, I quickly clean them off on my tank top and put them back on.

Spitting out the few bits of dirt that went into my mouth, I turn just in time to see him drive and stop at a blonde standing by the roadside.

He must have told her something to make her blush, and the next thing, she's getting into my spot in the car.

I'm shivering with rage, my teeth chattering. That jerk threw me right out to take his guest in?

Then the car starts coming back. My hope spikes.

Var leans across her. His dark hair is tousled, his full lips twisted in a lopsided smirk. "What's wrong? You honestly think I was going to ride you to college? Let myself get seen with filth?"

No. He can't do this. If he's planning on doing what's on my mind, then he can't.

I stand and dash toward the back seat, trying to pull the door open to get in.

"Sorry, four eyes. It's on child lock." He grinned.

"Var," I gulp. "You can't do this. Please."

I watch him bend to take something, then the next thing, a few textbooks are thrown out onto the ground.

"Bring those to my class." I hear his deep chuckle as his date rolls up her window.

"Wait!" I wave and chase after it. "Hold up! Please!" I jog half a block, tripping and hopping in my loose sneakers.

Damn it.

I stoop to tie my shoes and sling my backpack over my shoulder. It slides forward and whacks me in the back of the head. I huff and stand.

My face flushes hot as they drive away, and a thick knot forms in my throat, heat burning the back of my eyes.

Then his hand sticks out, showing me his middle finger.

Glaring with tear-filled eyes at the car fading into the distance, I scream. "I hate you, Var Robert! I hope you die a miserable death! I hope you get in an accident and die right there! Argh!"

I stomp

my foot, feeling the need to cry. I clench my hands. I'm not crying for that jerk.

The only option right now is trekking to school. Argh. I hate him.

Bring his books to class? Heh, he can kiss them goodbye. I walk back, pick up the three textbooks, and throw them into the bush.

Alright, I feel better.

CHAPTER 11SELENA POVI tried to sleep. I turned the lamp off, pulled the quilt up to my chin, and lay there cataloguing every sound the house made: the radiator ticking, a cousin's laugh floating up the stairwell and getting shushed, a pipe somewhere in the walls clearing its throat like it had something to say. Across the hall, a thin gold line of light still sat under his door. I watched it for what felt like an hour, and it never changed, no shadow crossing it, no footsteps, just a steady stripe on the floorboards like someone had painted it there to dare me.At some point I realized I was holding the note from Grandpa in my fist again. *You're going to need it this week.* I put it on the nightstand, pulled my hair out of its ponytail, and told myself very firmly that I was going to lie still until morning. Then I got up, because apparently my body had stopped consulting me about decisions sometime around Monday. The floor was freezing against my bare feet. I crossed the hallway i

CHAPTER 10SELENA POVI was still holding the envelope when Var leaned over my shoulder and read the sticky note out loud in a voice of mild interest, which was exactly the thing Grandma Hayes had told him not to do. "Buy yourself something silly. Huh. He never gave me a twenty." I folded the note against my chest and turned around so fast that my glasses slid down my nose. "He gave you a Buick," I said. "He gave you a Buick for your sixteenth birthday and you wrapped it around a mailbox in under a week." Var considered this with great dignity. "The mailbox came out of nowhere." "It was a mailbox, Var. It has never once come out of anywhere." Grandma Hayes made a sound that might have been a cough and might have been the first laugh she'd allowed herself all day, and then she tapped her cane twice against the floorboards and pointed it toward the kitchen. "Out, both of you. I'll be in the sitting room in ten minutes and I expect you there. Selena, put the money somewhere a cousin can'

CHAPTER 9SELENA POVThe service ended with a final prayer and the soft shuffle of two hundred people standing at once. I stayed seated a second longer than I needed to, staring at the polished back of the casket, because the alternative was looking at Var's hand resting on the pew an inch from mine, where it had been since he let go of me.He stood first and waited for me like we had rehearsed it in the car. When I got up, his palm returned to the small of my back as if it had never left, light and almost polite, but I felt it through the thin cotton of my dress like a hot coin pressed against my spine. Aunt May cut through the aisle toward us with a tissue balled in her fist, her eyes red but her posture already switching over to hostess mode."You're both coming to the house after, of course. Your grandmother insisted. There's ham, there's three kinds of casserole, and she wants the whole family under one roof where she can see us."Var's fingers pressed once against my spine. "Wou

CHAPTER 8SELENA POVI woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing under the pillow. The room was still dark, that thin blue dark that comes before sunrise, and my neck ached from sleeping at a strange angle. I had fallen asleep facing the door, I realized, one arm hanging off the edge of the mattress like I'd been reaching for something. For a second I forgot where I was. Then the night before rushed back all at once: the unlocked door, the sound of his footsteps passing, the way I had lain there like an idiot, listening, waiting for something that never came.I fished the phone out and squinted at the screen.**Mom:** Call me as soon as you wake up. It's important. My stomach dropped. Mom never texted like that. Mom texted in full sentences with exclamation points and sometimes a little flower emoji she'd learned from my stepdad. This was flat and bare, and it sat on the screen like a held breath. I sat up and dialed before I could talk myself out of it.She answered on the first ring.

CHAPTER 7SELENA POVI barely slept.Every time I closed my eyes I saw the same thing: Var's eyes locked on mine while that girl was on her knees in front of him. The way he told her to go harder just because I was watching. The way he looked at me afterward, like he already knew exactly what my body had done.I lay there until the ceiling went from black to gray, listening to the old house settle around me. Pipes ticking. The refrigerator humming two floors down. Once, somewhere around three, a floorboard creaked in the hall outside my door, and I stopped breathing completely until the sound faded. It was nothing. It was probably nothing. I still didn't sleep after that.By the time morning light came through the curtains my head hurt and my stomach felt tight, like I'd swallowed something I couldn't digest. I stayed in the shower longer than usual, letting the water run over my face, trying to wash the memory off my skin. It didn't work. When I finally stepped out and wiped the fog

  • HIS TO TORMENT    Why Did He Text?

***SELENA'S POV***I still had the message open when I sat down on my bed. **Unknown: You home?** I knew it was him. I didn't even need to ask. I typed, deleted, typed again. **Selena: Yes. Why?** The three dots appeared, disappeared, then came back. **Var: Good.** That was it? I stared at the screen. **Selena: That's it?** **Var: What else do you want?** Typical. **Selena: An actual reason would be nice.** He took longer this time. **Var: You got home late. Just checking.** **Selena: Since when do you care?** No reply. I tossed the phone beside me and reached for my charger. ---The next morning Sasha was already waiting by the bus stop, coffee in both hands. “Okay, spill. Why do you look like you didn’t sleep?” I took one of the coffees. “Var texted me last night.” She almost choked. “What?” “He asked if I was home.” Sasha’s eyes went wide. “And you answered?” “Obviously.
