Sophia's POV

The sun was already sinking when I pushed open the creaky door of our small apartment.

My shoulders screamed in pain from hours of intense practice.

My toes burned inside my worn ballet flats.

Every muscle ached.

But my heart… my heart was light.

For a few hours today, the world had left me alone.

Dancing was all I had now.

The only place life hadn’t touched and ruined yet.

“You’re just one step away from greatness, Sophia. I already see the crown on your head.”

Coach’s words replayed in my mind, and a shy smile curved my lips.

If coach compliments you, it means you are amazing!

But the moment I stepped fully inside, that smile died.

A heavy sigh slipped out of me.

This house… this place that once felt safe… now felt like hell.

I kicked off my ballet flats and flung them into a corner, then rushed into the kitchen, my heart still racing with leftover joy—

And froze.

Lisa stood by the sink.

Her eyes were red and swollen.

Her hands trembled as she gripped the counter. She didn’t even turn around when she heard me.

My chest tightened.

I had never seen my sister like this.

Not even after her worst breakup.

I walked closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“What happened?” I asked.

She finally turned.

One look at her face and my stomach dropped.

“It’s Mom,” she whispered. “The ulcer… it came back.”

My breath hitched.

“She collapsed this afternoon. She and Dad were arguing before then, We rushed her to the hospital but…” Her voice broke. “The doctors won’t treat her.”

“What?” The word tore out of me. “Why? Why won’t they treat her? And why didn’t anyone call me?”

My heart pounded violently. Fear, anger, shock and everything collided inside me.

“I tried,” Lisa cried. “Your phone was off. They stopped the treatment because we don’t have money. Dad called the Blackwoods for help but they said you have to sign the agreement first.”

Her voice dropped.

“Dad… Dad broke down. He shouted at the nurses and left.”

I staggered back.

“Is she okay?” I whispered, biting my lip hard.

I couldn’t cry.

Not now, If I break, who would hold Lisa together?

“She’s stable,” she said. “But she needs long-term treatment. And we can’t afford it.”

Silence swallowed us whole.

The walls felt closer. The air grew heavier.

“I’ll be going to work soon,” Lisa muttered. “Find something to eat and go to bed.”

“Work?” I stared at her. “What work?”

“I got a new job today,” she said, forcing a smile. “Hourly pay, it will do something, Thank God.”

“What about school?”

She looked away.

“I dropped out.”

The words hit me like a slap.

“Why would you do that, Lisa? Why?” Tears finally spilled from my eyes.

She grabbed my shoulders. “Shh… look, don’t worry—”

Bang!

We both jumped.

Dad stormed out of the bedroom, belt hanging loose, eyes red, anger and alcohol mixing badly.

“So you’re home,” he snapped. “Why didn’t you stay at the studio dancing while your mother dies? While your sister looks for jobs?”

“I didn’t know—” My voice cracked.

“You never know anything!” he barked, staggering. “You think ballet will save this family?”

His words sliced deep.

“You’re just like your mother,” he sneered. “Dreaming nonsense. Ignoring golden opportunities.”

“Dad, stop it!” Lisa stepped forward. “She needs encouragement. Sophia will win that competition. I swear on Grandma’s grave!”

“Don’t bring that poor woman into this,” he snapped. “You know the truth. Every year the same dream. Every year failure. Debt. Debt. Debt—”

His voice broke.

He started crying.

“She’s always failing,” he sobbed. “And now your mother’s life is in her hands—”

He turned and stumbled back into the room, ugly sobs filling the apartment.

I dropped to the floor.

My ears rang.

My head burned.

I couldn’t cry, I tried to but the tears were stuck somewhere deep.

He’s right.

I’d chased the national dance title for years.

And failed.

Again and again.

I was a failure.

Lisa fell beside me and held me tightly.

“H-he’s right,” I sobbed.

“I'm a failure, always failing.

“No,” she said quickly. “Failure is part of success. Every time you failed, you learned. Look at you now. Everyone sees your potential.”

I shook my head.

“No buts,” she cut me off gently. “I’ll work bd get money fir mum, not that I love school anyways. You practice. We’ll win this.”

She hugged me, and we cried like lost children.

Ethan's POV

I leaned back in my leather chair, staring at nothing.

My father stood by the window, arms crossed, smiling like he’d just won a war.

“You finally did it,” he said proudly. “You proved you’re not reckless. Everything I took from you—it’s all back.”

I scoffed and looked away.

“You have nothing to say?” he asked.

“What?” I laughed dryly. “Should I scream for joy? Or jump from the 23rd floor because you locked me in a cage called marriage?”

“I called Andrew,” he said casually. “Wanted to confirm if his daughter signed.”

“That’s none of my business,” I snapped.

I stood abruptly.

“I need air.”

I was already in my car minutes later, driving fast, too fast.

My mind drifted to last night.

Vanessa screaming.

Blood.

What the fuck was even wrong with me? .

At the hospital, I stood beside her bed.

Her head was wrapped in bandages.

“How are you?” I asked stiffly.

“Fine.”

“I didn’t mean it,” I muttered. “I lost control.”

“Is it about her?” she asked.

I turned to the window.

“Yes.”

“So it’s true,” she whispered. “You’re getting married?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I walked out without replying her.

Not that I owe her a reply or something.

Outside, I lit a cigarette.

Marriage.

No more freedom.

No more chaos.

Just me been Mr Blackwood—the perfect husband.

Fuck

Sophia's POV

I stared at the contract.

Marriage.

More like a cage.

I hated it.

But I had no choice.

For Mom.

For Lisa.

I picked up the pen.

My tears fell onto the paper as the pen moved.

I looked down and my signature was staring back at me.

It's done

ETHAN'S POV“Fuck” I groan, biting my lips as if it will take away the pain I have in my fingers for knocking them against the steel table while trying to knock the blaring alarm off it.Best way to start a day 101:Get an alarm to disturb you the moment you start to enjoy your sleep, then while trying to shut the asshole of an alarm off bang your hand against the table instead.“Stupid alarm” I mutter to myself while flinging it out the window.Running a hand across my hair, my fingers tap furiously on the keys of my PC.A sigh or relief escape my lips as today's schedule finally pop up on the screen. After a quick but soothing morning bath, I throw on a grey pants and white pants I have no idea how it got into my closet.“Good morning sir.” Rosalia bow slightly as we almost colode into each other at the hallway.I wave my hand, dismissing her while my head authomatically snap to the right..The door to the room is slightly open.Don't go , Ethan.Mind your damn business. My hands cu

Sophia’s POVThis new loneliness is becoming rather unbearable. For the past four days, Ethan and I lived exactly the way he wanted—like ghosts floating past each other.I'm not even sure if he lives here anymore. He goes out early, comes back late, most times he just stays wherever he is, and even when we crossed paths in the hallway, it felt like we were two strangers temporarily borrowing the same air.No eye contact, no exchange of words or the slightest greetings, and if you ask me, I'm totally okay with it.But honestly?I'm slowly dying due to the immense boredom. All I do now is sleep, wake up, eat breakfast alone, walk around a mansion that feels like a museum, scroll through my phone till there's nothing to scroll anymore, sigh 250 million times, complain in my head, take 10 naps, wake up again, and the staring-at-the-ceiling session begins.I do not have anyone to talk to, Rosalia had gone to visit her sick mother, and the remaining maids around here are more like statues.

Sophia's POV“Don’t you dare take another step,” Ethan’s voice thundered through the garden. My feet froze below me while I was trying to remember how to inhale and exhale. My back stiffened, and every inch of me was screaming for me to run, but my feet—those traitors—decided to stay planted to the ground. He appeared at the edge of the dim garden lights, tall and furious. The veins on his neck were so visible, and at that moment, I did not know what to expect or how to react.“What the hell was that?” he snapped, his voice sharp enough to cut glass. “You think this is a damn comedy show or what?”“I—I don’t—”“Don’t what?” He stepped closer, and his mint cologne mixed with the night air. “You humiliated my guest and ran out like a lunatic. Are you high or something?”My heart sank at first. I bit my lips, almost regretting my actions, but then it hit me.What the hell? Was I going to keep quiet? After all he’s done to me—the embarrassment of bringing different ladies home, kissing th

Sophia's POV“I insist on helping you, ma'am,” the maid said for the fifth time.“God, Rosalia, I'm okay. I do not need your help. If I do, I will call you, okay?” I shot her a smile as I dipped the chicken wing in my hand into a bowl of sauce.“I know, but it's just so uncomfortable seeing you doing all this yourself, ma'am.”“You find me cooking for myself uncomfortable?”“Yes, I'm employed to help you with all this,” she added with a bow, which made me almost roll my eyes.Wealthy folks can be something else. Why employ someone to help you prepare a common snack when you're not an amputee?I dismissed her and continued preparing my food. It's been a month since I got married to Ethan, and I have to say living in the same house with him is something I would never wish for my enemy.Ethan does not want to stay in the mansion with me, but his dad forced him, and that’s more like forcing me into hell.Ethan hates me, and he doesn't make any attempt to hide it.Just a day after our wedd

Sophia's POVThe ride to the hotel we were supposed to spend our first night in was extremely quiet, not just quiet but the kind of quietness that is louder than any banshee scream. The air between us was electric.Ethan kept his head glued to the window all through. The car finally came to a halt at the front of the almighty Blackwood Hotel and Suites. The hotel was like a paradise on earth—with tall illuminated black buildings here and there, we were led to the VIP resort and my jaw dropped. The resort was literally something from a fairytale dream—it was built on a lake that somehow sparkled under the moonlight. There was a mini cabin at the center that was surrounded by palm trees that were perfectly in a straight line, there was another path from the cabin that led to a mini bar from which you could view the glowing streets of Marlia City.“Oh my God, this is heaven.” I said it out loud, ignored the situation of things, and spun like a five-year-old me would have done.“I'm so gl

Sophia's POV.She stood there, grinning like a pig while holding the underwear up like a trophy. She looks so familiar, but I don't know where I know her from.Though I hate to admit it, tears stung the corner of my eyes instantly. What can I do? Obviously, nothing! My eyes moved from the lady to the guests who had their jaws on the floor as well; some were giving me pitiful stares.“Oh my God, I thought Ethan would be faithful to his wife.”“I actually thought getting married would have changed him.”“Change him? No matter what happens, a badass would always be one.”“Poor girl.”“Oh, c'mon, does she want to pretend she doesn't know she is getting married to everyone's husband?”The talks and gossip went on, and they just broke my heart. Their words did not hurt me at all, but the situation I found myself in.“Vanessa, what are you doing here?” Ethan's deep voice vibrated right behind me.Seriously?“What is she doing here? Ain't you the one keeping little bitches everywhere? So you'
