"Victor, I swear, it's nothing." "You've said nothing three times now. Each time you've looked less like you believe it yourself." Gideon's eyes flicked past me, toward the house, toward anywhere that wasn't my face. "Clara's been through a lot. I don't want to make things worse by having you interrogate her over instinct." "I'm not interrogating her. I'm asking you why you've been covering for a woman who insisted a little too hard on riding into a rescue mission for someone who wasn't actually missing anymore." "You weren't even there when she said it." "I don't need to be there to hear it secondhand and think it's strange." "It's not strange, it's—" He stopped himself, his jaw working, and I watched him choose, right in front of me, not to finish that sentence. "It's not what you think." "T
Arielle's POV "You don't get a minute." I sat up fully, pulling the blanket around my shoulders, done watching Selene stare at nothing while my father-in-law kept murmuring a stranger's name in his sleep. "Not when that name is making you look like you've seen a ghost." "That's exactly what it's doing." Selene sank onto the edge of a chair like her legs had simply stopped agreeing to hold her up. "Because in every way that matters, I have." "Then talk." "Augustin Hunt." She said the name slowly, like the syllables cost her something to speak out loud. "Your family's founder. The man everyone believes died over a hundred years ago." "Believes?" "No, he didn't. He created an entire organization so that everyone would think he did, and then he spent the next century running it behind the scenes." Her handss were shaking now. She put her palms flat on her knees to hold them down. "The Architects. Everything is him." The room spun in my vision again, like when Ysolde talked about my
Victor's POV We hit the tree line at a dead run and found Julian on one knee, blood streaming down from a gash above his eye, six guards closing in a loose circle around him. "A little help," he called out, his voice tight with pain, one hand still tracing frantic shapes in the air, "would be extremely appreciated right about now." "Down!" I didn't wait for him to answer before I attacked the guard standing nearest to us and pushed him into a tree hard enough to make him pass out. Arielle was already on the move, too fast for my liking and driving her elbow into the second guard's throat before I could even think to warn her to stay back. Fear for her safety burned in me, useless and sharp, because there was no time left to argue with her about it. My father took down the third guard with a move I remembered learning from him years ago, his body clearly running on stubbornness alone at this point. The four of us sent the circle scattering, guards tackled or unconscious
Victor's POV The floor dropped from under us before we'd gone a reasonable distance. "Jump!" I grabbed Arielle around the waist and threw us both forward as the floor gave way beneath our feet, landing hard on a lower ledge that was already crumbling at the edges. "That's twice tonight," she gasped, scrambling upright, her hands scraped raw from the stone. "I'm starting to think this place just doesn't want us here." My dad hit the ledge half a second later, his bad leg dragging him up the rock. I grabbed him by the arm and yanked him up the last few inches. He gasped but didn't complain. "Keep going," he said dismissively at the worried look on my face. "Worry about me after you're sure we're not gonna die." The whole building shuddered once more, and dust began settling all over us so thick it was like being surrounded by white water. My heart tightened painfully with fear in my chest. "Come on, this way." I found a narrow gap in the stone ahead, air moving through it i
Arielle's POV Pain speared through my stomach, sharp and cold, like ice water dropped straight into my veins, and I knew instantly that Ysolde had started whatever she had planned. "There's nothing to talk about," I heard Victor say, his voice tight with barely controlled fury, but Ysolde only raised one hand, calm and unhurried, and the green light filling the chamber pulsed brighter in response. "This won't take long," she said, her tone light, almost bored. "I only need a moment of her attention." "Get away from her." Victor's voice cracked like a whip. "I'm not touching her," Ysolde said, her pale eyes never leaving my face. "I'm touching what's inside her. There's a difference, though I understand why you wouldn't want to make it." I felt another wave of pain rising in me and clenched my teeth to silence a scream, determined not to give her that satisfaction. Sweat was beading on my forehead, and my hands quivered uselessly against the chains that held me fast to the ston
Victor's POV A guard came at my father's blind side and I put him through a support beam before he got close enough to cause any harm. "Behind you," my father rasped anyway, half a second too late, still trying to cover ground he no longer had the strength to cover. "I saw him." "You didn't look." "I didn't need to." I hauled him around a fallen section of stairwell, both of us moving as fast as his legs would allow, which wasn't nearly fast enough. "How much further to wherever they're holding new arrivals?" "Two more floors. Maybe three, if they've changed the layout since I last saw it." "You don't know." "I've been down here eight months, Victor. I'm not memorizing blueprints for your convenience." "Fair. Sorry." "Don't apologize. Just keep moving." "I'm moving. You're the one slowing us down." "I noticed. Thank you for pointing it out." "I'm not trying to be cruel." "I know you're not. You're trying to be efficient. It's not the same thing, but I'll allow it tonight
Arielle’s POVThe iron gates groaned open as the car rolled up the long driveway, and the mansion came into view the same way it always did. It looked too large, too quiet, too full of things that didn’t move. Every topiary trimmed to the same perfect angle. Every window was gleaming. Nothing was
Arielle's POVWhen I woke up, Victor wasn't on the bed.I got up slowly, still feeling the ache in my lower abdomen from last night. I hadn't showered after, I still smelled like Victor’s strong cologne and sex.Memories from last night rushed through my head, fuck! I had to admit that Victor did t
Arielle's POVI sat up.“You'll assume the role of a patient and I'll be the doctor.""Sounds interesting." I smiled. "What illnesses can you treat?""You'll find out. Soon." His eyes stayed on mine. "Let's not rush things."I nodded."Good." He strode to the table and picked up a pen and paper."T
Arielle's POV"Can I spend the night, please?"His brows raised."I mean…my rent expired, my stuff is outside and I have nowhere to go.
