Jenna sat on the steps of the old stone church. She leaned up against the cold cement and traced her finger along the lines of the stairs. She looked towards the street in front of her; cars drove by, and people walked on the sidewalk. It was a perfect day; only it wasn't.
The town she lived in was called Pleasantville, but it wasn’t very pleasant for her. She waited on the steps of her current foster family's church, the Morgs, for them to come out from the service.
Today was Jenna’s 17th Birthday, but it didn’t matter. Jenna had been in foster care since she was three, but not all her foster parents were bad. The Morgs were nice enough people, but they weren’t her family.
The Morgs doted on their biological children but not her. When it came to birthdays, holidays, and vacations? She was rarely included. They weren’t mean or vile like some of her previous foster parents. She had clean clothes and food; she even went to an excellent school- They didn’t treat her like family.
Jenna’s mother was an alcoholic, and Jenna had been placed in foster care one fateful night when her mother had taken a ride with her drunk. Unfortunately, there had been a car accident; thankfully, no one was seriously injured. However, when the police entered the apartment and saw their living conditions, Jenna was taken away and placed in foster care.
Since that night, Jenna had often pleaded with her mother to get sober and help, but it never worked. She had been to multiple rehabilitation centers and therapy, but nothing stuck.
She looked away from the traffic and at the big tree, she sat under next to the steps. The wind blew, and she remembered all her previous foster parents.
Jenna was in a group home from three to five. At five, she was placed with the Millers until she was ten. The Millers were wonderful. Mrs. Miller couldn’t have children of her own, and they wanted to adopt Jenna, but her mother wouldn’t sign off. That made Jenna so incredibly mad. The Millers had no other children; she was like their biological child. She was included in everything, vacations, holidays, and anything family related. She even had her own room that was decorated just how she wanted. The Millers tried for four years to get Jenna’s mother to change her mind, but after so many failed attempts, they had another child placed with them. They ended up adopting him, and Jenna was placed with the Canters. It had broken her heart that they didn’t want to keep her. Living with the Millers felt like home, but they wanted to build a relationship with their son without interference, which meant Jenna had to go.
She was with the Canters from ten to fourteen. They were also nice people, but after what happened with the Millers, Jenna could not allow herself to get close to them. She had built a wall so she wouldn’t get hurt again. Then, when Jenna was fourteen, Mrs. Canter had gotten sick. She had stage 4 breast cancer and soon passed away. So after the Canters, Jenna was placed with the Morgs.
The church doors opened and out walked The Morgs. Evelyn (Mrs. Morg) was talking to the pastor. “Oh yes, of course. I'd love to help organize the bake sale for the fundraiser. We can make it so much fun.” She smiled as she spoke and touched the pastor’s arm. Jenna rolled her eyes. They looked like the perfect family in public, but they were anything but at home. Mr. Morg (Mark) smiled and nodded in agreement as he followed with their two children. Max and Melanie were ten years old and twins. They were annoying, but they weren’t terrible.
Mrs. Morg looked down at Jenna “Come along, dear. Let's go home and celebrate your birthday.” Jenna smiled at her and got up, playing the picture of the perfect family. They got to their dodge journey SUV, and everyone climbed in.
Mr. Morgs hands were on the steering wheel; his knuckles were white with anger. Jenna knew it was coming, and she passed the twins their tablets and headphones, “How about you guys watch something on Youtube while we drive home?” she said, smiling. The twins took the tablets and headphones and zoned out as Jenna braced herself.
Mr. Morg looked at his wife. She was sitting in the passenger seat, playing on her phone. “WHY, Evelyn! Why would you even agree to help right now? You know everything is wrong right now. In our marriage, in our relationship? Why are you trying to ruin my life further!”
Mrs. Morg had an affair.
On the outside, they were the perfect family, pillars of the community. They helped with local charities, helped the homeless, and even fostered children. They had an excellent reputation. Mr. Morg was running for city council, and his wife’s adultery could never be known. There couldn't be a scandal now! It would cost him the election and ruin his reputation.
Evelyn looked at him with disdain, “Well, maybe if you would put your family first! ME FIRST! I wouldn’t have been lonely! I would have stayed within our marriage! You don’t even try Mark! All you care about is your career! I can't take it anymore! When the election is over, I want a divorce!” She screamed.
The car pulled into the driveway, and Evelyn got out, slamming the door. Mr. Morg sighed as he turned and looked at Jenna, who was looking out the window pretending she hadn’t heard any of that. Finally, Mark spoke, “Remember, your life is good here. Do not tell anyone any of this. It would suck if we suddenly had to tell your social worker you couldn’t live here anymore.” Jenna nodded; She already knew about all of it. He was right; her life wasn’t bad here. They weren’t her family, but she was content. They lived in a huge house, almost a mansion. She had her own room, and there was a pool. She had one more year until she aged out of the system. She could make it.
Jenna tapped the twins and motioned for them to go inside. They all climbed out of the car and walked inside the house. Jenna walked up to her room and closed the door. She could keep the Morg's secrets. It's not like she had ever been in control of her life anyway. She had been moved from foster family to foster family so many times; all she wanted was to control her destiny.
In the morning, Jenna rolled over and stretched out in the large bed. She looked over the room again. The canopy was lovely. It really made the bed warm and inviting. The sitting area had a table and two sofas. Both elegantly blue. The table was made of marble. She smiled as she sighed heavily. The last two days had been crazy, but tonight, she would attend a ball. She had never been to one. Junior prom was okay for her. Her friend Melody had asked her boyfriend’s best friend to take Jenna. She wasn’t romantically interested in him at all, but they had fun. She had worn a silver sweetheart dress. It wasn’t as elegant as even what she had worn the night before, but she had loved it. She had worn black pumps and had her hair professionally done. Melody was her closest friend, but didn’t have a best friend. She refused to get close to anyone. There was a knock on the door, “Come in.” called Jenna.Marissa walked in and smiled at Jenna, “Good morning, Miss. Did you sleep okay?”Jenna smil
Clay grabbed the bottle back from Yale and drank the rest, gulping it down. It was probably at least halfway full still and Yale sighed and watched him as he gulped it down. Clay let out a huge belch when he finished, setting the bottle down.Yale laughed, “So I take that as a yes.”Clay sighed, “It’s strange, isn’t it?”Yale nodded, “It’s odd to have a human actually fated mated to our kind.”Clay played with the wine bottle in his hands, “I know. I quite don’t understand it myself, but she is definitely my mate.”Yale sighed, “Do you think she’s even good enough for you?”Clay looked at Yale with defeat, “I would imagine s,o but who’s to say? She’s from a different timeline, she knows nothing of our world, and she’s odd.”Yale laughed, “She definitely is odd, but like you said, maybe she is the key.”Clay nodded and tapped the wine bottle against the log, “Maybe so. Either way, when she told me supernaturals (as she called them) were not known in her timeline, that scared me. I know
Clay and Yale watched Jenna walk to her room. Clay watched her walk away we glee as Yale watched Clay with curiosity. The two of them weren’t planning on going to bed, Not quite yet. The night was the best time for dragons. They could shift and fly over the lands in darkness. The castle and its surroundings were especially quiet and beautiful at night. They had found a spot that they loved to fly to and then shift and watch the night sky.Yale smiled at Clay, “Are you ready to go?”Clay nodded, “Yes, just let me grab the bag, and let’s sneak some of Mom’s favorite wine.” He smirked. Yale laughed as they headed into the kitchen. They grabbed some of the famous cheesecake that was left over. Then Yale headed down to the cellar and grabbed a bottle of the Queen's finest wine. The Queen didn’t like it when they took her favorite wine, so they had to be careful and quiet. The two men quietly wrapped up the cheesecake in paper and added the wine to the bag. They then quietly exited the cast
Jenna couldn’t help but feel embarrassed. She had tried too hard to act like a lady, but it hadn’t worked out. She noticed Clay from across the table, smiling at her; he was handsome. He had black hair, green eyes, a body to die for.-Abs, and many muscles. She felt even more embarrassed that this had happened in front of him. She wasn’t looking for love, and her trust issues from moving around so much had made it so she hadn’t even had a boyfriend. Well, there was someone she was interested in when she lived with the Canters, but she had been moved again, and she was never able to see if that would even turn into a romance. She was only 13 then anyway, so the hopes were not high. She sighed as she looked across the table and apologized once again, “I am so sorry.”The queen smiled as she reeled in her giggles, “It's fine, dear. We should have warned you about the spice, but we don’t get many human visitors here. We should have known better.”Jenna put on a half-smile, “I just feel sil
~~Clay’s POV~~~Clay watched Jenna start sweating from the dragon’s stew. He didn’t say anything; watching was way more fun. He and Yale had already seen the way she behaved in front of them, but he wanted to see what she would do in front of the King and Queen.Jenna was his mate.He wasn’t even sure how this was possible. She was from a different timeline, and she was such a strange girl. He had thought hard about this. If she had not traveled to their timeline, would he never have found his mate? It was a shock for a dragon to even have a human as a mate; It was highly unlikely. Dragons and other supernaturals did breed with humans, making hybrids, but for one to be actually fated mated to one was very rare.He thought maybe this was why their destinies were entangled. He hadn’t told anyone this, not even Yale. He couldn’t tell Jenna either right now. He knew that her head was spinning already with coming to this timeline and then finding out that she may have something to do with
The three stayed out playing by the lake for what seemed like hours. The sun was beginning to set when Marissa came to the lake, “ Prince Yale, Your parents are requesting the three of you come to get washed up for dinner.”Yale smiled, “ Okay, thank you, Marissa.”“ Ms. Jenna, please come with me. I will help you get ready.” Marissa smiled sweetly as she spoke to Jenna, but Jenna felt uneasy as they all walked inside.“ You are very beautiful for a human,” Marissa said as she complimented Jenna and followed her up the stairs.Jenna smiled awkwardly, “ Umm..thank you.” She said as she shrugged.Marissa laughed as she watched Jenna falter for words, “ We are going to get you into a bath. I’ve already prepared the water, so it’s the perfect temperature. Afterward, we can re-braid your hair. The queen has laid out three dresses that belong to Yale’s sister, Adleigh, that she would like you to choose from.” Marissa said she led the way, but Jenna smiled wearily; she wasn’t much of a fancy
Jenna watched the castle become uncloaked and gasped as she took in the fantastic sight. The stone was even more beautiful than at Queen Angela’s castle. It was dark grey, and dragon statues were all over the grounds. The grounds were beautiful and were upkept with flowers and décor for the timeline. She squealed in excitement, “ That is a pretty neat trick.” she smiled, looking at the magic stone.Yale smiled, “ Yes, my father has a witch he uses to cast spells. When the war started, we had our castle cloaked so the King’s guards couldn’t find it. “Jenna nodded, “ Yes, witchcraft is not a thing in my timeline. We can’t cloak anything.” She said, marveling at the castle once more. Both men laughed as they watched her. They had nothing to compare her experience to, but a castle being cloaked was usually something no humans had seen, “ Well, let's go.” Said Yale, leading the way, but Jenna was still mesmerized. They walked towards the castle; It was only a few meters away, and Jenna co
In the morning, Jenna rolled over onto the big bear rug and stretched out. Clay had moved her after she fell asleep, but she felt rather cozy. She stretched her body out, making yawning noises.“Are you ok?” asked Yale, and Jena laughed, “Yeah, just a good stretch. I’m going to use the bucket. What’s for breakfast?” she asked, getting up.Yale laughed as he watched her, “You are one strange human. We are going to have some leftover deer meat, and Clay went to see if he could find some eggs.”Jenna smiled, but a thought came across her mind, “How do you cook eggs here?”Yale grinned, “Well, we have things called pots, and you can cook them over a fire or put them in water and boil them.” He said matter of factly.Jenna smirked, “Ah, like camping.”Yale laughed, “Sure…like camping.” He replied.Jenna smirked and walked to their makeshift bathroom. There was a bucket, a bowl of water, and some leaves. She laughed to herself about the leaves. Another thing she missed was toilet paper. She
Yale looked at Clay, “What do you mean?” Jenna nodded and interrupted, “ Yeah…what does that mean?” both men looked at her and then back at each other. "Queen Angela used the time clock and changed her destiny. Maybe this human can do the same," said Yale. Jenna smirked, “My name is Jenna. Talk about me not having manners. You didn’t even ask for my name, and you didn’t even introduce yourself, Yale. I just know your name because he said it.” Both men laughed they had been referring to Jenna as the human this entire time. “As I was saying. In Jenna’s timeline, there are no supernaturals. Maybe she can help us end this war and save all of us," said Clay. Jenna sighed, “There is nothing in any of our history books about this war. Supernaturals are just make-believe.” Clay nodded, “But you came from a different timeline, so maybe you’re the key to changing everything.” "In books, supernaturals are scary. Vampires kill humans and drink their blood, dragons are ferocious, we
