Chapter 2

Author: Southern Wish
I was so angry, I almost laughed again.

What, was Jim some kind of big shot? Why was his emotional support worth more than mine?

A dark look appeared in his eyes.

"You're naturally better at showing affection, so it's only right that you make me feel cared for.

"I'm different. I'm easygoing, straightforward, and not good at comforting people.

"For me, it takes a lot of effort to give you emotional support. I have to learn how to do it, pay attention to your emotions, and put real thought into it."

He took a sip of tea.

"I put in a hundred times, even a thousand times more time and effort than you do. So of course my emotional support is worth more!"

His words made my head throb.

How could Jim think I was naturally better at loving people and should be the one giving all the emotional support? Had evolution somehow given me some special ability that everyone else lacked?

Other living things evolved stronger bodies and sharper minds to survive.

Was I supposed to have grown nothing but a heart that existed to take care of someone else's emotional needs?

I lowered my eyes, realizing that he had dismissed everything I had done for him as something that came naturally to me.

With one sentence, he had erased everything I had ever put into our relationship.

How ridiculous!

So he really wanted me to pay for the emotional support he had given me.

"What about all the time and effort I spent making this marriage work for the past three years?" I asked.

"That's your duty as my wife!"

Jim stood up, his tall frame making the room feel smaller.

"You should've been making an effort to put a smile on my face. My happiness is worth more than anything else. Only when I'm happy can I treat you well. Isn't that exactly the kind of emotional support women want from their husbands?"

I was so stunned that I forgot to breathe. The hurt that suddenly overwhelmed me was unbearable.

In the past, I had admired Jim's clear-headed personality most of all. I loved the flawless logic he showed during debate competitions.

I had fallen for that side of him. For the first time in his life, meeting me made him throw reason aside and fall in love with me.

My college roommates envied me because Jim, who had always seemed so distant and untouchable, had fallen for me.

So when he asked me out, I said yes.

On the first day we started dating, Jim said, "I don't want money to get in the way of our relationship. Let's keep our finances separate."

It had hurt, but I didn't want to use love to pressure Jim or make him give up his principles.

So for the next five years, we always paid our own way.

After we got married, splitting expenses became even more inconvenient. Whenever we came up short on household expenses, I covered the difference without making a fuss.

I had never thought it was worth keeping track of every little expense. We were married, and what mattered was our relationship.

But now, I finally understood. Someone as detached and rational as Jim had never had any real feelings to begin with.

"I learned how to play games just to keep you entertained. I played everything, from mobile games to PC games!" Jim said.

I snapped, "I ran to the pharmacy for you in the rain, picked you up from the karaoke bar in the middle of the night, and cleaned up your vomit when you got drunk! And now you're telling me none of that was worth as much as one smile from you?"

I smashed the glass he had just been drinking from in anger.

Then I continued, "Whenever things went wrong at work, you'd come home every day and complain about everything, like the whole world was out to get you!

"I listened to you dump all your frustrations on me every day, and did I ever complain? If you want to charge by therapist rates, I should be the one charging you!"

But the first thing he said was, "I paid 10 dollars for that glass. Remember to split the cost and pay me back."

Something inside me snapped when I heard that.

To him, I was nothing compared to a stupid glass.

Our marriage had existed only in name for a long time. I had been the one stubbornly lying to myself and looking for love in my memories.

I clenched my teeth until I tasted blood, then finally spoke.

"I won't acknowledge that bullshit emotional support bill! And I'm not paying you a single cent!"

At that, anger flared in Jim's eyes.

"I make 12,000 dollars a month, and you make 10,000 dollars. We each put 5000 dollars toward household expenses every month. So how the hell did you end up with 1 million dollars in savings after just three years?

"You know exactly where that money came from. You either stole it from me, or you sold yourself for it. You bitch!"

There was no panic in Jim's eyes, only anger at being threatened. "Queenie, you've always been so well-behaved. You wouldn't make things difficult for me, would you?"Most of the time, people kept the peace on the surface. But once one person broke the peace, the relationship could quickly fall apart.Bertha pointed at me angrily. "You did this on purpose to ruin Jim's family!"A family? Could a home built from an affair really be called that?I smiled and said nothing. Instead, I walked over to Seth, who had come to pick me up. "Come on. Let's go home."I still had to go back and prepare for the divorce proceedings. I wasn't interested in watching Jim and Queenie tear each other apart.-Seven months later, the divorce case went to court.Jim was supposed to show up that day, but he arrived 30 minutes late. If he had been any later, the judge could have ruled in my favor without him being there. How unfortunate.I had heard that Queenie had gone into premature labor. It wa

"Mabel, don't think being pregnant gives you the right to push me around!" Jim snapped. "This is my last chance for you to make up. Don't push me too far. I don't want our child to be born into a broken home."His words were threatening, but a flash of guilt crossed his eyes. He probably wasn't sure whether I would still choose him as firmly as I had before."Didn't we already fall out?" I asked. The moment Jim threw his emotional support bill at me, things between us were over.Queenie's eyes were filled with tears. "Jimmy, how could such a good man like you be treated this way? Mabel must have found some rich guy and decided your love wasn't good enough for her."If you ask me, you should take her to court for the divorce. It's anyone's guess who will win!""No!" Bertha appeared from somewhere after paying the hospital bill. "Jim, if you divorce Mabel, a child without a mother will get bullied."Bertha, who usually could barely stand the sight of me, gave me such a warm smil

Fate seemed determined to toy with me.Even after doing everything I could to avoid her, I still ran into Queenie at a corner in the hallway and nearly stumbled. She looked me over for a second before smirking. "Jim already left you, and you're still coming to the OB-GYN? Don't tell me you're trying to keep him with a pregnancy."She gently rubbed her lower belly, unable to hide her pride. "Once I have the baby, Jim will propose to me, and I'll become his wife. As for you…"Queenie gave me a scornful look. "You'll just be a woman whose husband kicked her to the curb."A woman can be capable, but she still needs to be gentle and find a good man to rely on. Not only were you too stubborn, you always had to be better than Jim."You really can't blame him for leaving you. It was you who pushed him into my arms."Queenie's reasoning was so outdated, sexist, and judgmental.I frowned at her with obvious disgust. "A sensible person doesn't walk away after being pushed. There were four children in my family.Craig Lennard, my oldest brother, was a TV reporter. My second brother, Derrick Lennard, was a professional kickboxing champion. Jared Lennard, my third brother, was a police inspector. If Jim wanted to keep me from leaving, he would have to get past my three older brothers. His face darkened as he whispered through clenched teeth, "When did you call them? You really don't want to be close to me? Mabel, just how badly do you want to divorce me?"I used to think Jim's possessive behavior was incredibly attractive. Now that I was clearheaded, I found his breathy voice incredibly grating.Craig pointed an action camera at Jim, while Derrick stood in Jim's way, refusing to let him pass. Jared watched him with a hard, angry stare.I pouted and leaned into Dad's arms. "Dad, look at Jim! He cheated on me, and he's still bothering me."I shot a glance at Queenie. "He's been playing house with his coworker every night, and she's already pregnant. H

I said, "I don't accept your asset evaluation report or anything Queenie said."I handed Jim a phone number. "For any disputes over the division of our assets, talk to my lawyer."I stepped aside and moved away from Jim's hand on my shoulder. "I'm going home now."My parents' house was my real home.Jim stared at the phone number, and it suddenly seemed familiar. "Is this that childhood friend of yours who's a lawyer?"I nodded. "He knows everything about me."Back then, I had distanced myself from my childhood friend Seth Yeowell for Jim's sake. I thought it would prove my loyalty and show Jim how much I loved him."Damn! You really did cheat on me?" Jim's eyes were bloodshot as he grabbed my shoulders tightly. "Didn't you say you had cut ties with him a long time ago?"My expression darkened as I finally remembered why Queenie had looked familiar.Six months earlier, Seth had sent me a set of photos. He said he had run into Jim vacationing at the beach with a woman. However

Only then did I understand what it meant to turn the blame back on the person being accused. But Jim seemed to have more to say. "Just because the source of that 1 million dollars is clear doesn't mean the suspicion of cheating goes away!"How could a short-sighted woman like you make 1 million dollars from investing in funds? You must have gotten close to someone and heard some inside information."Otherwise, why won't you tell me which fund is making money so I can make money with you?"I pressed my lips together, unable to hide the contempt in my eyes. I didn't want to waste any more time explaining myself.Someone who wanted to smear another person would find a way to do it no matter what.If I made money from a fund, he considered it proof that I cheated. If I didn't tell him which fund was making money, he still considered it proof that I was unfaithful. As far as Jim was concerned, there was no way someone like me could make 1 million dollars on her own in three years.
