Chapter 3

Author: Southern Wish
Jim was stunned by his own words after shouting them.

A second later, he composed himself.

"That's right! You made 1 million dollars by selling your body. On top of paying for my emotional support, you owe me compensation for the emotional distress you caused me. After all, what man could put up with being cheated on?"

A bitter, relieved laugh escaped me. "You can't put up with it unless I pay you, right? Jim, you've completely thrown away your pride and dignity for money."

I closed my eyes in pain.

What kind of man had I married? He was even making up rumors about his own wife.

For three years, I had worked like crazy to save money because Jim said he wanted to buy a house in a good neighborhood for our future kids.

"Mabel!" Jim raised his hand and glared at me.

In the end, he slammed his hand down on the little sugar figurine beside him and smashed it.

"You won't pay up? Then we'll hire a professional to sort out our finances! You won't have a choice then. Every meal I took the time to make for you, every time I ran errands to buy you fruit, every lipstick shade I spent time researching…"

Jim grabbed my chin and forced me to meet his eyes.

"You have to pay for all my effort!"

I ignored the dull pain in my chin. Instead, I stared at the broken sugar figurine of a bride.

Suddenly, the pain in my chest disappeared.

Jim had made this sugar figurine himself for our wedding after learning from a master sugar artist. He said that just as sugar figurines could last for years, his love for me would last just as long.

Now that the figurine was broken, our relationship would end here too.

I showed no emotion. "Go on, then."

Once everything was settled, getting a divorce would be easier.

That night, we slept in separate rooms.

-

The financial settlement specialist arrived early the next day. Queenie Gerber wore a neat business suit and sat down at the dining table.

"Mr. Sully, Ms. Lennard, please authorize me to review your income, assets, and all your financial records from the past three years."

I handed over all my documents without a word.

They included everything I had stayed up late to record about what I had done and contributed to our household over the past three years.

Jim also handed over his ridiculous emotional support bill.

Neither of us spoke as we silently waited for the results.

Queenie was very professional and worked fast. She finished reviewing all the records in just three hours.

"Here is the asset evaluation report. Please look it over," she said.

I read through it line by line, and my blank expression slowly turned grim.

Jim, on the other hand, smiled. "Well? Even a professional agrees that emotional support has value! And over these three years, you really did take advantage of me."

The asset evaluation report clearly stated the following.

"After reviewing everything, Ms. Lennard paid 110,000 dollars less than her share of utilities, fuel, gas, groceries, and other household expenses during the three years of marriage.

"Mr. Sully's claim for compensation for emotional support does not violate the law and is supported.

"However, in keeping with the principles of marriage and separate finances, Ms. Lennard is required to pay only 50% of the 886,666-dollar emotional support bill."

Every word in the report left me stunned.

Was this really a report from a professional financial settlement specialist?

I stared at Queenie in disbelief.

Suddenly, she looked familiar.

"You've known Jim for a long time, haven't you?" I asked. "Did the two of you work together to trick me? What law says emotional support has monetary value?"

Jim's expression hardened.

"Just because she's making you pay, you accuse her of tricking you? Show her some respect! I'm talking about us, and you're bringing up the law. Are you really this heartless?"

There was no panic in Jim's eyes, only anger at being threatened. "Queenie, you've always been so well-behaved. You wouldn't make things difficult for me, would you?"Most of the time, people kept the peace on the surface. But once one person broke the peace, the relationship could quickly fall apart.Bertha pointed at me angrily. "You did this on purpose to ruin Jim's family!"A family? Could a home built from an affair really be called that?I smiled and said nothing. Instead, I walked over to Seth, who had come to pick me up. "Come on. Let's go home."I still had to go back and prepare for the divorce proceedings. I wasn't interested in watching Jim and Queenie tear each other apart.-Seven months later, the divorce case went to court.Jim was supposed to show up that day, but he arrived 30 minutes late. If he had been any later, the judge could have ruled in my favor without him being there. How unfortunate.I had heard that Queenie had gone into premature labor. It wa

"Mabel, don't think being pregnant gives you the right to push me around!" Jim snapped. "This is my last chance for you to make up. Don't push me too far. I don't want our child to be born into a broken home."His words were threatening, but a flash of guilt crossed his eyes. He probably wasn't sure whether I would still choose him as firmly as I had before."Didn't we already fall out?" I asked. The moment Jim threw his emotional support bill at me, things between us were over.Queenie's eyes were filled with tears. "Jimmy, how could such a good man like you be treated this way? Mabel must have found some rich guy and decided your love wasn't good enough for her."If you ask me, you should take her to court for the divorce. It's anyone's guess who will win!""No!" Bertha appeared from somewhere after paying the hospital bill. "Jim, if you divorce Mabel, a child without a mother will get bullied."Bertha, who usually could barely stand the sight of me, gave me such a warm smil

Fate seemed determined to toy with me.Even after doing everything I could to avoid her, I still ran into Queenie at a corner in the hallway and nearly stumbled. She looked me over for a second before smirking. "Jim already left you, and you're still coming to the OB-GYN? Don't tell me you're trying to keep him with a pregnancy."She gently rubbed her lower belly, unable to hide her pride. "Once I have the baby, Jim will propose to me, and I'll become his wife. As for you…"Queenie gave me a scornful look. "You'll just be a woman whose husband kicked her to the curb."A woman can be capable, but she still needs to be gentle and find a good man to rely on. Not only were you too stubborn, you always had to be better than Jim."You really can't blame him for leaving you. It was you who pushed him into my arms."Queenie's reasoning was so outdated, sexist, and judgmental.I frowned at her with obvious disgust. "A sensible person doesn't walk away after being pushed. They st

There were four children in my family.Craig Lennard, my oldest brother, was a TV reporter. My second brother, Derrick Lennard, was a professional kickboxing champion. Jared Lennard, my third brother, was a police inspector. If Jim wanted to keep me from leaving, he would have to get past my three older brothers. His face darkened as he whispered through clenched teeth, "When did you call them? You really don't want to be close to me? Mabel, just how badly do you want to divorce me?"I used to think Jim's possessive behavior was incredibly attractive. Now that I was clearheaded, I found his breathy voice incredibly grating.Craig pointed an action camera at Jim, while Derrick stood in Jim's way, refusing to let him pass. Jared watched him with a hard, angry stare.I pouted and leaned into Dad's arms. "Dad, look at Jim! He cheated on me, and he's still bothering me."I shot a glance at Queenie. "He's been playing house with his coworker every night, and she's already pregnant. H

I said, "I don't accept your asset evaluation report or anything Queenie said."I handed Jim a phone number. "For any disputes over the division of our assets, talk to my lawyer."I stepped aside and moved away from Jim's hand on my shoulder. "I'm going home now."My parents' house was my real home.Jim stared at the phone number, and it suddenly seemed familiar. "Is this that childhood friend of yours who's a lawyer?"I nodded. "He knows everything about me."Back then, I had distanced myself from my childhood friend Seth Yeowell for Jim's sake. I thought it would prove my loyalty and show Jim how much I loved him."Damn! You really did cheat on me?" Jim's eyes were bloodshot as he grabbed my shoulders tightly. "Didn't you say you had cut ties with him a long time ago?"My expression darkened as I finally remembered why Queenie had looked familiar.Six months earlier, Seth had sent me a set of photos. He said he had run into Jim vacationing at the beach with a woman. However

Only then did I understand what it meant to turn the blame back on the person being accused. But Jim seemed to have more to say. "Just because the source of that 1 million dollars is clear doesn't mean the suspicion of cheating goes away!"How could a short-sighted woman like you make 1 million dollars from investing in funds? You must have gotten close to someone and heard some inside information."Otherwise, why won't you tell me which fund is making money so I can make money with you?"I pressed my lips together, unable to hide the contempt in my eyes. I didn't want to waste any more time explaining myself.Someone who wanted to smear another person would find a way to do it no matter what.If I made money from a fund, he considered it proof that I cheated. If I didn't tell him which fund was making money, he still considered it proof that I was unfaithful. As far as Jim was concerned, there was no way someone like me could make 1 million dollars on her own in three years.
