Chapter 1

Author: Southern Wish
My eyebrows drew together when Jim Sully said that.

Was I hearing things?

I had heard of married couples splitting the costs of raising kids, groceries, utilities, and the mortgage.

But this was the first time I had ever heard of someone splitting the cost of emotional support.

Marriage was about the relationship between two people, and both partners had to put effort into the relationship every day.

This wasn't about splitting expenses anymore. This was robbery!

"Then tell me. What exactly counts as emotional support?" I asked.

Jim slapped the dining table and snorted. "Listen carefully. I'm going to show you exactly how much you've taken advantage of me over the past three years!"

I never expected him to actually pull out a bill. It was a thick stack of papers with "Emotional Support I Had Provided" written across the front.

Unbelievable!

I knew Jim was a penny-pincher who counted every dollar, but I never imagined he would take it this far.

He could seriously put a price on feelings?

I flipped through his emotional support bill.

It started with the first smile he had given me while trying to win me over. Then there was the hug he had given me when we had officially started dating.

For our wedding photos, he spent 30 minutes at the studio getting his groom's makeup done.

I waved him off. "Why does getting your makeup done for our wedding count as emotional support for me?"

Jim tapped the paper with his pen. "If I weren't marrying you, would I have wasted 30 minutes getting dressed up? Didn't I do it to make you happy?"

So he wouldn't have bothered making himself presentable if he had been marrying someone else?

When I started to protest, Jim cut me off.

"Don't twist my words! Whenever I smiled at you, comforted you, and told you I loved you, that was emotional support I provided. That also includes the time I spent with you or thinking about you. You got to enjoy all of that, so you have to pay up!"

As he spoke, he pulled a calculator from the drawer and started punching in numbers.

"At the current market rate, an hour of conversation costs 45 dollars.

"Half a day of shopping together without getting dressed up costs 200 dollars, while half a day with me all dressed up costs 350 dollars.

"It's 50 dollars each time I help you fall asleep. Based on the going rate for a therapist, comforting you costs 200 dollars an hour."

People said a man was at his most attractive when he was serious. However, watching him seriously calculate every dollar sent a chill through me.

Finally, after an hour of painstaking calculations, Jim put down his pen.

"I'll let everything I did for you while we were dating slide. As for the three years we were married, the total comes to 886,666 dollars."

I was rendered completely speechless.

"Oh my goodness! You're so good at math, you silly thing."

I deliberately put on a sweet, mocking voice to humor him.

He didn't seem bothered and lifted his chin. "Enough with the sarcasm. You've got 1 million dollars, so you can afford it."

I frowned slightly and clicked my tongue. "Honey, how could 886,666 dollars possibly cover all the emotional support? It should be paid for with emotions."

My smile faded as I held out my hand.

"Calling you 'you silly thing' is 50 dollars each time, while 'honey' costs 500 dollars a time. Using a sweet voice on you costs an extra 100 dollars. Would you like to pay through Venmo or Zelle?"

I never expected following Jim's own rules to make him explode with rage.

"Mabel Lennard! I'm your husband. Are you trying to rob me? Stop twisting everything around! How can emotions possibly be something you charge for?"

My face immediately hardened. "If you can put a price on emotions, then why can't I use them to pay up? Who's the one twisting things around here?"

Jim's expression hardened, too. "The emotional support I give you isn't worth the same as the emotional support you give me!"

There was no panic in Jim's eyes, only anger at being threatened. "Queenie, you've always been so well-behaved. You wouldn't make things difficult for me, would you?"Most of the time, people kept the peace on the surface. But once one person broke the peace, the relationship could quickly fall apart.Bertha pointed at me angrily. "You did this on purpose to ruin Jim's family!"A family? Could a home built from an affair really be called that?I smiled and said nothing. Instead, I walked over to Seth, who had come to pick me up. "Come on. Let's go home."I still had to go back and prepare for the divorce proceedings. I wasn't interested in watching Jim and Queenie tear each other apart.-Seven months later, the divorce case went to court.Jim was supposed to show up that day, but he arrived 30 minutes late. If he had been any later, the judge could have ruled in my favor without him being there. How unfortunate.I had heard that Queenie had gone into premature labor. It wa

"Mabel, don't think being pregnant gives you the right to push me around!" Jim snapped. "This is my last chance for you to make up. Don't push me too far. I don't want our child to be born into a broken home."His words were threatening, but a flash of guilt crossed his eyes. He probably wasn't sure whether I would still choose him as firmly as I had before."Didn't we already fall out?" I asked. The moment Jim threw his emotional support bill at me, things between us were over.Queenie's eyes were filled with tears. "Jimmy, how could such a good man like you be treated this way? Mabel must have found some rich guy and decided your love wasn't good enough for her."If you ask me, you should take her to court for the divorce. It's anyone's guess who will win!""No!" Bertha appeared from somewhere after paying the hospital bill. "Jim, if you divorce Mabel, a child without a mother will get bullied."Bertha, who usually could barely stand the sight of me, gave me such a warm smil

Fate seemed determined to toy with me.Even after doing everything I could to avoid her, I still ran into Queenie at a corner in the hallway and nearly stumbled. She looked me over for a second before smirking. "Jim already left you, and you're still coming to the OB-GYN? Don't tell me you're trying to keep him with a pregnancy."She gently rubbed her lower belly, unable to hide her pride. "Once I have the baby, Jim will propose to me, and I'll become his wife. As for you…"Queenie gave me a scornful look. "You'll just be a woman whose husband kicked her to the curb."A woman can be capable, but she still needs to be gentle and find a good man to rely on. Not only were you too stubborn, you always had to be better than Jim."You really can't blame him for leaving you. It was you who pushed him into my arms."Queenie's reasoning was so outdated, sexist, and judgmental.I frowned at her with obvious disgust. "A sensible person doesn't walk away after being pushed. They st

There were four children in my family.Craig Lennard, my oldest brother, was a TV reporter. My second brother, Derrick Lennard, was a professional kickboxing champion. Jared Lennard, my third brother, was a police inspector. If Jim wanted to keep me from leaving, he would have to get past my three older brothers. His face darkened as he whispered through clenched teeth, "When did you call them? You really don't want to be close to me? Mabel, just how badly do you want to divorce me?"I used to think Jim's possessive behavior was incredibly attractive. Now that I was clearheaded, I found his breathy voice incredibly grating.Craig pointed an action camera at Jim, while Derrick stood in Jim's way, refusing to let him pass. Jared watched him with a hard, angry stare.I pouted and leaned into Dad's arms. "Dad, look at Jim! He cheated on me, and he's still bothering me."I shot a glance at Queenie. "He's been playing house with his coworker every night, and she's already pregnant. H

I said, "I don't accept your asset evaluation report or anything Queenie said."I handed Jim a phone number. "For any disputes over the division of our assets, talk to my lawyer."I stepped aside and moved away from Jim's hand on my shoulder. "I'm going home now."My parents' house was my real home.Jim stared at the phone number, and it suddenly seemed familiar. "Is this that childhood friend of yours who's a lawyer?"I nodded. "He knows everything about me."Back then, I had distanced myself from my childhood friend Seth Yeowell for Jim's sake. I thought it would prove my loyalty and show Jim how much I loved him."Damn! You really did cheat on me?" Jim's eyes were bloodshot as he grabbed my shoulders tightly. "Didn't you say you had cut ties with him a long time ago?"My expression darkened as I finally remembered why Queenie had looked familiar.Six months earlier, Seth had sent me a set of photos. He said he had run into Jim vacationing at the beach with a woman. However

Only then did I understand what it meant to turn the blame back on the person being accused. But Jim seemed to have more to say. "Just because the source of that 1 million dollars is clear doesn't mean the suspicion of cheating goes away!"How could a short-sighted woman like you make 1 million dollars from investing in funds? You must have gotten close to someone and heard some inside information."Otherwise, why won't you tell me which fund is making money so I can make money with you?"I pressed my lips together, unable to hide the contempt in my eyes. I didn't want to waste any more time explaining myself.Someone who wanted to smear another person would find a way to do it no matter what.If I made money from a fund, he considered it proof that I cheated. If I didn't tell him which fund was making money, he still considered it proof that I was unfaithful. As far as Jim was concerned, there was no way someone like me could make 1 million dollars on her own in three years.
