The ride home was in total awkward silence. Clay was still upset about hurting his daughter’s feelings, but to be fair, all I said was that she’s only a kid. I mean, don’t adults know better? I guess I was wrong when I saw that poor thing jump off the truck. I hugged myself as I looked out the window, feeling Clay’s eyes on me, but I didn’t dare look back. I was honestly ashamed.

We arrived at my house and as soon as he parked the truck; I got out. Didn’t even bother picking my bag from the back of the truck as I made my way towards the door. I took the key out of my pocket and tried to unlock it, frustrated at my failed attempt to do so.
