**RIVER**

I've stopped pretending to listen to whatever Jax is saying.

I couldn't tell you the last three sentences that came out of his mouth. Something about a party this weekend, something about a girl from his econ class, the usual noise that fills space at this table when nobody's actually saying anything important.

Normally I'd throw in a word here and there. Today I can't be bothered.

Because she's three tables away, laughing at something the redhead said, and I can't stop watching

**EMERSON**“Why am I here?” I demand. “And why is Tessa here?”“You don’t remember?” he repeats, slower this time, as though my brain might suddenly start functioning if he speaks to it like a particularly stupid toddler.*You don’t remember.* Again.I have a sudden urge to pull my hair out.If he says those three words one more time, I swear I’m going to take the nearest dumbbell and introduce it to his smug face.“Remember *what*, River? Do you want to give me a fucking clue, or are we going to spend the entire morning playing twenty questions? My head is pounding, my patience is running on fumes, and I haven’t even had a painkiller yet. So stop feeding me this nightmare in installments and just tell me what the fuck happened — all of it. In one go.”“You got completely shitfaced,” he says, sounding far too entertained. “Passed out in my arms and refused to let go. You were hanging off me like a drunk octopus. Every time I tried to put you down, you’d tighten your grip and bury

**EMERSON** My stomach drops. I stare at him, waiting for the punchline. It doesn’t come. River simply stands there, looking far too pleased with himself for a man who has just delivered what might be the most terrifying sentence I’ve heard all morning. “Could you stop being cryptic for five fucking seconds and tell me what the fuck happened?” He tilts his head, studying me. “You really have no idea?” “River, if I had the slightest fucking clue, do you think I’d be standing here asking you? My head is trying to kill me, and whatever brain cells survived last night are currently on strike. So, for the love of God, just spit it out.” His mouth twitches. “Let’s just say you gave me a night I won’t forget in a hurry.” My stomach gives a small, unhappy lurch. I remember vodka. Mason. The stupid dare. River’s mouth against mine… He folds his arms, and I immediately regret giving him the opportunity to draw attention to his biceps. Seriously, Emerson? Now? The man is standing ther

EMERSON “Enjoying the show, Wildcat?”My entire body goes rigid. That voice.Oh, no.No. No, no, no.The man turns, and all the air leaves my lungs.River Knight.Of course.Of fucking course.Because apparently the universe has decided that a hangover, a mysterious bedroom, and the lingering smell of my own vomit weren’t enough punishment. No, it had to throw in River fucking Knight — shirtless, sweating, and looking like every bad decision I’ve ever almost made. For a few seconds neither of us says a word.I just stare. My brain is working at roughly three per cent capacity, and even that feels generous. It’s struggling to process the fact that the most infuriating man on campus is standing six feet away from me in nothing but dark workout shorts, looking like he was carved out of pure arrogance and expensive genetics.Meanwhile, I’ve got dried vomit on my clothes, a headache that could qualify as a medical emergency, and breath that might legally count as a biological weapon. The

**EMERSON**My head.Oh, my fucking head.It feels as though someone has parked a truck inside my skull and decided to test the brakes. I groan, squeezing my eyes shut and pressing both hands against my temples.“I’m never drinking again,” I croak.A bold statement, considering I’m fairly certain I’ve made it at least six times before.Even with my eyes closed, the sunlight seeping through my eyelids is far too bright and far too cheerful for someone whose brain feels like it’s been put through a blender. I drag the duvet over my head and lie perfectly still, hoping the darkness might convince my skull to stop trying to split itself in two. My mouth feels as though I’ve spent the night chewing sand. My tongue is practically glued to the roof of it. My stomach gives a warning twist the moment I dare to shift.“Never again,” I mumble into the duvet. “Ever. This time I mean it.”A fresh wave of pain pulses behind my forehead. Hiding from the sun isn’t helping. If anything, the throbb

**RIVER** By the time we reach my car, I’m seriously considering changing my phone number, moving to another country, and pretending I never met either of my friends. Jax, unfortunately, is still talking. “Try not to fall in love before breakfast, Knight.” “Try not to get hit by a bus before you reach your car.” He places a hand over his heart. “And here I was, hoping to give a speech at your wedding. Guess I’ll start looking for a bus.” I ignore him. Reacting only encourages the bastard. Knox opens the back door before I can tell him to do something useful for once. I lower Emerson onto the seat, one hand cradling the back of her head. She stirs, making a small noise of protest when I try to pull my arm free. “Easy, Wildcat.” Her fingers slip from my undershirt, and for some ridiculous reason I watch them fall. Jesus Christ. Get a grip, Knight. She’s half-conscious, covered in God knows what, and you’re standing here analysing the way her fingers let go of your shirt like y

**RIVER** Jax’s gaze dropped to Emerson, still fast asleep in my arms, her cheek pressed against my chest and one hand curled into my undershirt like she’d signed a fucking lease. “Oh,” he said slowly. “What the fuck does that mean?” “Nothing. I’m just trying to figure out when you became the official chairman of the Emerson Hart Sleeping Arrangements Committee.” “Jax.” “What? You’ve vetoed my place like you’re personally responsible for approving her fucking accommodation.” He tilted his head, studying me with exaggerated curiosity. “Should we expect a background check next, or are you saving that for the second date?” “I’m making sure she doesn’t wake up tomorrow with a hangover, realise she’s been dumped somewhere she never fucking agreed to stay, and decide to press charges against the most convenient asshole in her version of events — ” “Which would be you, presumably?” “Who else?” “Fair enough.” Jax nodded, looking far too pleased with himself. “So, hypothetically, i
